No, Ryan isn’t badmouthing Romney behind his back

posted at 5:21 pm on September 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Ace. The bad news? A swath of left-wing media, including Lawrence O’Donnell, bit hard on a lame “satire” at Politico. The worse news? This isn’t the dumbest Romney-related non-story that they’ve fallen for this week, which makes me wonder how far we should go in blaming the “satirist” for this rather than his audience. If the left really is so eager to demonize Romney that they were able to convince themselves, in all seriousness, that a 65-year-old frequent flier who graduated from Harvard Law doesn’t know that you can’t open the windows of a plane at 35,000 feet, then they’re beyond understanding satire. At least until November 7th.

The “satire” from Politico columnist Roger Simon:

Paul Ryan has gone rogue. He is unleashed, unchained, off the hook.

“I hate to say this, but if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he’ll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him,” Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Republican Party of Iowa, told The New York Times on Sunday…

Though Ryan had already decided to distance himself from the floundering Romney campaign, he now feels totally uninhibited. Reportedly, he has been marching around his campaign bus, saying things like, “If Stench calls, take a message” and “Tell Stench I’m having finger sandwiches with Peggy Noonan and will text him later.”

If you’re going to take that at face value, the obvious reading is that Ryan’s joking. It’s not crazy to imagine him mocking the “stench” quote in the NYT story by referring to Romney that way tongue-in-cheek. It is a little crazy, notwithstanding Simon’s best attempts in the rest of the piece to suggest that Ryan’s gone rogue, to think of him openly referring to his running mate as “Stench” with sincere derision six weeks out from election day. He’s too disciplined a pol for that even if he did secretly feel that way, and there’s no evidence to think that he does. But in case there was any lingering doubt, the author dispelled it earlier today:

Simon told BuzzFeed: “Some people always don’t get something, but I figured describing PowerPoint as having been invented to euthanize cattle [elsewhere in the column] would make the satire clear. I guess people hate PowerPoint more than I thought.”

Follow that last link for a reaction round-up of the left’s greatest, most credulous hits. The only reason to take the column at face value was because Simon’s typically straightforward in his political writing, not given to flights of whimsy that coincidentally happen to involve the Republican VP nominee dumping on the top of the ticket a few weeks before a presidential election. On the other hand, this is the same guy who once wondered whether polls are actually a form of shamanism because they use smaller samples to guesstimate how larger samples will behave. Admittedly, that’s not an unpopular theory at the moment, but I’m pretty sure it’s … not correct.

Here’s clear-eyed newsman Lawrence O’Donnell going hook, line, and sinker to open last night’s show on a story that was way too good for him to check.

Roger Simon is POLITICO’s chief political columnist.

Okay I am well aware of Politico’s lib bias, but not familiar with Simon. Does he usually write satirical pieces or is this just really a hit piece veiled as satire? And has he written similar columns about Slow Joe and Barky?

That was Friday, and that was the end of Ryan following the game plan. At a certain point, all running mates on failing campaigns feel they must break free from the manacles placed on them by the top of the ticket. Sarah Palin began pursuing her own path once she learned that John McCain was having strategy sessions with his morning bowl of Farina.

Never mind my previous questions. I completely understand now who and what Simon is.

Until the Republicans completely lock out the discredited news sources, what they say has credence. If you want what they say not to matter, announce a list of media sources that will not be recognized and whose “press credentials” will not be accepted at the Romney White House. After that, everything negative these news sources say is sour grapes.

If the Republicans lose this time, the political party that replaces them will do that right out of the gate.

Mitt Romney may be struggling in some key swing states, but there’s no slippage for him in conservative Texas, a new poll shows.

Thanks to a lopsided lead among white voters, Romney is leading President Obama 55-40, according to a poll from Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research, which carries out surveys for GOP candidates. That’s even higher than John McCain scored against Obama in 2008.

Chris Perkins, who is a partner at the research firm and served as the pollster for U.S. Senate hopeful Ted Cruz in his Republican primary victory over Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, said he expected a better showing for Obama after the Democratic National Convention.

The three-day telephone poll of likely Texas voters was conducted Sunday through Tuesday, plenty of time for any post-convention glow to reach the electorate.

“I thought the Obama number would be a little bit better,” Perkins said. “It wasn’t there. It’s kind of lining up to what 2008 did — if not better — for McCain.” McCain beat Obama 55-44 in Texas in 2008….

I’ve tried three times to post on their site about this joke of a story about Ryan, and even though it showed up after I posted it, when I refreshed it …….it was gone.

avagreen on September 26, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Paul Krugsman beclowns himself! Okay, I know that’s not unusual.

slickwillie2001 on September 26, 2012 at 6:46 PM

I just love the fact he that he won’t debate. Yes I know this is a freedom works link, but I can’t find the other ones at the moment.

Hahaha, O’Donnel has such a crazed look in his eye, he kind of reminds me of the mad joker who shot up the theater in Colorado.
These poor people, what are they going to do when their world falls apart in November?

scalleywag on September 26, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Dude, really??? Mediaite and MSNBC…. oh wow!

uncommon sense on September 26, 2012 at 6:43 PM

here is the same scene from cspan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0dcXwCpBOM

romney seems to notice that he is doing a mistake and ends the chant quite fast. but imagine what ryan is thinking about romney when he interrupts the chanting of his name so that it get mixed with romney’s name.

of course, leftist media gets an opening with this and pow! another easy distraction and even feeds into a narrative of bad stump politician that honestly I am starting to believe.

nathor on September 26, 2012 at 6:56 PM

It’s no wonder this wasn’t understood as a satire. Simon is right about the ridiculous stuff about Power Point, which was obviously satire. People who loathe Power Point, like me, will probably even find it funny. Certainly, once you get to it, you should be able to recognize this as not being a serious story.

The problem is, you don’t get to that portion of the story until the second page. There are a lot of people who skim the first few paragraphs of a story and then move on. Anyone who did not click on the second page of the story read what sounded like a straightforward job of reporting, if a bit far-fetched.

To be fair, I think it’s typical of satires to gradually get more absurd as you read further into them. But most news articles don’t get read all the way to the bottom — a fact which all journalists should be aware of. In fact, most newspaper stories are intentionally written so they can be cut to arbitrary lengths and re-used in other newspapers.

tom on September 26, 2012 at 6:57 PM

“Journalists” should know better than to fall for frat boy crap like this, but that’s not who we’re talking about here.

scalleywag on September 26, 2012 at 6:58 PM

(And, the smart alec post to which you responded was just that……smart alec and wrong!)

avagreen on September 26, 2012 at 6:12 PM

Don’t know why you thought my post was a “smart alec”.
I meant that the media still pass that on as gospel and that they (the media) are the fools.

I’m sure that it happened, and Ryan is probably thinking farther down the line… but look at all the gaffes and stooopid crap that Obummer has done, and all you get are crickets. The MSM is in for a very rude awakening. The only one who seems to get it a little, is CNN, but that is because they are on the verge of extinction.

I think you might want to tap on your sarcasm meter a couple times, it’s apparently stuck.

Have no idea of what you mean.

If you don’t believe me……check out the story. ?? Preferably prior to posting.

avagreen on September 26, 2012 at 6:45 PM

He’s suggesting you’re missing the intended sarcasm. And then you answer, “have no idea of what you mean,” which just piles on how much you’re missing the sarcasm, which actually makes it pretty funny.

That’s ok, though. We all miss the obvious sometimes.

Sorry, bluealice, I made the same mistake that many made on this satire about Ryan.

I missed the last word in your post. I saw “red” when I saw the first post and posted in haste.

Sorry. Truly. I didn’t even notice who had made the post…..if I had I would have reread it to make sure that I had read it correctly.
I admire your post, bluealice. Please accept my apologies.

i have seen reports and even late night jokes about obama “cannot change Washington from the inside” or the not meeting world leaders in the UN to go to the view.
saying that the msm does not touch obama is not exactly true. I do note that there is more goodwill towards obama by the msm.

Boy, am I dense. I still don’t get it.

I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic in my reply, only factual………….but I guess M240H tried to turn it into sarcasm as a way of grinding it in to the opposition. (I didn’t even know who M240H was/is. Maybe if I knew his posting history here, I would have caught it.) Next time, I will try to catch the subtilty of his humor. I guess…..

avagreen on September 26, 2012 at 7:18 PM

Satire, in order to be successful requires:
A) it have some root in truth
B) be humorous
C) require the audience to have the mental horsepower to realize it is satire.

This failed in all three.

Speaking as a more-than-occasional smart alec, the sarcasm was in the over-the-top claim of the original post that Obama was leading by 30%, a claim that even the media isn’t making (though you know they would love to!)

What’s the difference? According to the latest ABC/Reuters/CBS/Wall St. Journal/NBC/Starbucks/Whole Foods poll, Obama is leading Florida, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas by 30%.

ardenenoch on September 26, 2012 at 6:17 PM

He does get extra points for adding the famously progressive Starbucks and Whole Foods to the long list of liberal media organizations. If you’re scoring sarcasm, that is.

Take some happy pills.

Yeah.

One problem.

It will now stick.

Odds of this being used on Weekend Update: 75%

They ran three lies as facts last week. Because the goal is to spoon-feed low information voters a bunch of lies.

OK. I get it now. I’m used to reading some really outlandish comments on other sites, such as The Hill from some really dense and ignorant posters with just about as much sense as I perceived that post to have.
After a day of posting there and butting my head against the wall while doing it, I didn’t catch the subtle message of both the messages you pointed out. I really missed a chance for a good belly laugh.

I’ll have to say that HotAir does have its share of humorous/intelligent/refined sarcastic posters.

I’m getting silly from lack of sleep. Glad to meet you, Tom. You are a great poster to read.

avagreen on September 26, 2012 at 7:36 PM

, romney is not newt that comes back from the dead with some amazing SC debate performance! romney has no political skills and whatever gains he makes he will trash with some idiotic remark the day after.

nathor on September 26, 2012 at 6:06 PM

Wait, Newt won the Rpublican primary?

They got Krugman, too. So in case anyone was still wondering, “Is Krugman really that stupid?” we can now definitively say, “Why, yes, yes, he is.”

Simon, I do not think the word “satire” means what you think it means. Generally a “satire” is supposed to be witty and entertaining.

talkingpoints on September 26, 2012 at 7:37 PM

You mean the trolls spouting this stuff the past couple of days took in this stuff without even questioning it? But they are such concerned trolls! So earnest in their ability to research any piece of minutia. Save for their ethics, which are miniscule that not enough can be found to be researched.

ajacksonian on September 26, 2012 at 7:42 PM

The mistake we make is talking about people like Crazy Larry O’Donnell, unhinged academic fraud Paul Krugman, liberal ass-clown Roger Simon as though they are normal people with different viewpoints. They aren’t — they all function at the same level as Gawker, namely sewer level.
