Libyan president: Of course the violence had nothing to do with a YouTube video

posted at 8:41 am on September 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Why should we listen to what Mohamed Magarief has to say about the terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, which claimed the lives of four Americans, including the first US Ambassador murdered in the line of duty since 1979? For one thing, the Libyan president’s story hasn’t changed — unlike that of the White House. While UN Ambassador Susan Rice insisted ten days ago that the sacking of the consulate happened because a protest over a YouTube video “spun out of control,” Magarief has insisted all along that not only was there no protest before the attack, the attack itself was very controlled and disciplined.  He tells NBC News that the attack had “nothing to do with” the 14-minute video, and had everything to do with the anniversary of 9/11 (h/t: Canopfor):

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

An anti-Islam film that sparked violent protests in many countries had “nothing to do with” a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi earlier this month, Libya’s president told NBC News.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News’ Ann Curry, President Mohamed Magarief discounted claims that the attack was in response to a movie produced in California and available on YouTube. He noted that the assault happened on Sept. 11 and that the video had been available for months before that.

“Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September,” he said. “They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message.”

Magarief said there were no protesters at the site before the attack, which he noted came in two assaults, first with rocket-propelled grenades on the consulate, then with mortars at a safe house.

This rebukes Barack Obama for his speech at the UN, which was predicated on the assumption that the attack on Benghazi and demonstrations coinciding with the 9/11 anniversary sprang from the months-old YouTube video.  Obama never even mentioned terrorism in relation to the attack on the consulate, choosing instead to scold “those who slander the prophet of Islam” as among the biggest problems in the Middle East.  Perhaps if Obama had met with Magarief while the UN General Assembly was in session this week, Obama might have rewritten his speech — but Obama was too busy appearing on The View.

I hadn’t even thought of it in those terms, but you’re right. That is chilling. This election is the point of no return. Either we are an informed and responsible electorate or we are stupid and easily distracted by eye candy. Obama is clearly running his campaign based on the latter assumption. As foolish as he sounds blaming this on some silly video nobody has seen, there are far to many people who don’t care, are incapable of thinking, or are so uninformed by a lapdog media that they simply don’t know any better. Our country was attacked and our president is awol.

There’s a Daily Beast article up at RCP that talks about how U.S. intelligence knew that it was a terrorist attack within the first 24 hours. You really need to take a look at how the left “attempts” to go about relaying information without actually criticizing Obama. And then check out the outraged comments- “What purpose would it have served to announce it was terror? These type of investigations take months!” “President Obama is desperately trying to protect us from further attacks- he knows much more than he’s saying”.

This rebukes Barack Obama for his speech at the UN, which was predicated on the assumption that the attack on Benghazi and demonstrations coinciding with the 9/11 anniversary sprang from the months-old YouTube video.

Ed Ed Ed, sometimes I genuinely worry about you, this rebuke of Obama says something either you entirely missed, or didn’t have the guts to say.

What this rebuke says, it that the past couple of weeks of violent protest in the middle east, over this movie, are entirely Obama’s fault.

How is it Obama’s fault you ask? Remember, the Egyptian Embassy Twitter that offended so many people did not actually
mention the Movie. It was Obama and Hillary who mentioned the Movie in a desperate attempt to divert attention from their culpability in Ambassador Stevens death because they failed to take adequate security precautions on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, even after being warned by the Libyan Government that Al Qaeda was planning an attack.

How Hillary Clinton could have been so foolish, naive and stupid all at the same time is a mind numbing thought. To believe that individuals who consider the suicide bomber a effective and legitimate weapon of war, who are well known to place exceptional value on symbolic actions on symbolic dates would not make every possible attempt to strike with deadly violence an America facility is utterly inconceivable.

Anyone with 2 functional braincells knew that the movie was not responsible for the attacks on the Embassies in Egypt or Benghazi, a mere handful of people on earth had seen the movie at that point in time. By spending two weeks publicly insisting that the movie was responsible Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both lite and fanned the flames of the fire that has burned throughout the middle east since 9/11/12.

You will do searches all day for any information about what happened to the 8-man rescue squad helicoptered across the Libyan desert from Tripoli to rescue the Benghazi diplomats.

After meeting up with a Libyan special operations unit (Shield Brigade, under Capt. Fithi Obeidi) at Benghazi airport and proceeding to a “safe house” where 37 refugees from the consulate were holed up, they came under mortar attack. One Marine was killed, blown off a rooftop, two others wounded on the ground. More U.S. and Libyan diplomatic personnel were killed or wounded before everyone finally was loaded into cars and trucks and rushed to the airport for air evacuation.

Since the initial September 12/13th reportage, the press has gone stone cold silent about the rescuers. You’d think someone would be interested in the stories those 7 surviving Marines would have to tell.

I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do if this SOB gets re-elected…

PatriotRider on September 26, 2012 at 8:52 AM

Boy, I hear ya. I suppose we still live in the best country (which doesn’t say much for the state of world affairs). But we could be sooooo much better. Very heartbreaking. But where else does one go?

No, seriously, where else?

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mitt Romney this morning in Westerville, Ohio. He did mention the catastrophe and breakdown of government policy in the Middle Easy. They are running on this, folks. From the overflowing crowd filling two gymnasiums, I can tell these people truly are the silent majority.

Poor Ann Curry looks like “leave my boyfriend alone!” when she is disputing the Libyan president’s correct version of events.

I wondered about that.

News never reports on crowd size. Video clips are always tight shots of the speakers, never the venue. And it seems like the folks sitting behind Romney look bored, but the crowd cheers sound booming.

lucyvanpelt on September 26, 2012 at 11:26 AM

So I have more trust in the Libyan president than in ours…sad day indeed.

joepub on September 26, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Do you remember Jimmy Carter’s failed attempt to rescue the hostages held in the Iranian Embassy? The Fifth Column Treasonous Media does, and they remember how that failed rescue mission obliterated any possible chance of Jimmy Carter winning reelection.

SWalker on September 26, 2012 at 10:54 AM

Yeah. We were calling the Benghazi rescue Operation Eagle Claw II when the story broke.

de rigueur on September 26, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Where is the media? Why no demanding of pressers to talk about Benghazi?

The main stream media died under Obama. They left the last vestige of objectivity behind and saddled their yokes to carry water for this administration.

hawkdriver on September 26, 2012 at 8:50 AM

Don’t worry, Hawk, if we get Romney in that’ll go back to asking the hard questions.

Bob's Kid on September 26, 2012 at 12:05 PM

Since the initial September 12/13th reportage, the press has gone stone cold silent about the rescuers. You’d think someone would be interested in the stories those 7 surviving Marines would have to tell.

de rigueur on September 26, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Not if their stories paint Obama in a bad light.

Of that I’m sure. Because, a dog in animal carrier on a car roof is so important.

hawkdriver on September 26, 2012 at 12:09 PM

A legitimate question to ask every conservative: what are you going to do if Obama is re-elected?

Move to Norway to be near my future grandchildren?

Bob's Kid on September 26, 2012 at 12:14 PM

No, seriously, where else?

lucyvanpelt on September 26, 2012 at 11:01 AM

I and many others I know are moving to Panama.

Obama: “Who ya gonna believe-that liar in Libya-whom I’m 100% responsible for-or your president-who set up the Libyan Worker’s Paradise?”

MaiDee on September 26, 2012 at 12:50 PM

“They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message.”

And that “certain message” was a huge “Yankee Go Home” to Obama and the US sponsored forces, our enlisted men and women who, regardless of years of unending tax funds spent, won’t be any more secure in Libya than those ordered by the CinC to be in Iraq, remain in Afghanistan, or being stationed any Muslim nation.

The very people that our taxes were spent by our government agents to be trained and supplied did this on 9-11 not simply “because they could”, but “to carry a certain message.”

N.B. the current US puppet Libyan President is walking the tight rope razor’s edge. While reprimanding the al Qaeda forces/plot, by Magarief exposing Obama to be the liar who flaunts the most STOOPID lies to cover his ass, Magarief diplomatically achieves the embarrassment of Obama, the same target meant to be shamed by the scheduled uprising and murders of Obama’s US Ambassador with his top Libyan intelligence and security officials.

Libyan president: Of course the violence had nothing to do with a YouTube video

Of course, only an Ivy League intellectual would believe otherwise.
