House Armed Services chair: Obama admin hiding truth on Libya until after election; Update: “Full explanation”?

posted at 12:01 pm on September 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The outrage over the Benghazi attack and the Obama administration’s response has percolated for two weeks on Capitol Hill, but it’s breaking out into the open today.  Last week, the White House briefing for Congress frustrated Senator Bob Corker so badly that he told reporters, “That is the most useless, worthless briefing I have attended in a long time.” Today, House Armed Services chair Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon told Fox News that the Obama administration seems to be deliberately hiding the “truth” about the Benghazi attack, and that the only reason he sees for the subterfuge is the date in November that’s fast approaching:

Six “top Republicans” in Congress, including McKeon, have sent a letter to the White House demanding a new briefing.  McKeon specifically calls out UN Ambassador Susan Rice for pushing the “spontaneous” protest that “spun out of control” story days after the attacks, when intel showed within hours that the assassination of Ambassador Stevens was the result of a planned terrorist attack — on the anniversary of 9/11.  McKeon still has no idea whether the FBI is in Benghazi at all, or whether the “crime scene” has been secured, more than two weeks later.

Speaking of the FBI, McKeon points out that the White House response to this – and Rice’s spin — goes hand in hand with Obama’s “law enforcement” approach to terrorism.  “They still have the mentality of treating this like it’s a law and order issue rather than a ‘war on terror’ issue,” McKeon tells Fox. The letter from Republicans to the White House specifically declares that the US seems not to have learned a lesson from the pre-9/11 attack failures:

The letter, which was obtained by Fox News, says many questions were left unanswered about the Sept. 11 attack in last week’s intelligence briefing for lawmakers by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

The letter also criticizes the administration’s handling of the aftermath of the attack, particularly its characterization of the attack as an out-of control protest rather than an act of terror against the U.S.

Slamming the response to the attack as a “pre-9/11 mindset,” they ask the Obama administration what it plans to do to protect other U.S. interests abroad from being targeted.

“Clearly, the threat from Al Qaeda and affiliated groups has metastasized; yet we do not appear to be learning from the past,” the letter states.

The lawmakers who signed the letter include House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rep. Rogers, R-Ky., Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. McKeon, R-Calif., Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Rep. Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla. and Judicary Committee Chairman Rep. Smith, R-Texas, among others.

Maybe the media would like a better briefing than they got from Susan Rice on 9/16, too.  Let’s see if they start demanding one.

Update: Perhaps the White House correspondents have begun demanding the better explanation. Mark Knoller reported on Twitter about Jay Carney’s defense of the omission of the word “terrorism” from Obama’s remarks about the Benghazi attack:

Er, wouldn’t the inclusion of the word “terrorism” make for a “full explanation”?

Hard to believe that this is the same MSM that gave breathless wall to wall coverage of super secret Valarie Plame and her lying a$$ husband Wilson.

You would have to be an absolute fool to not see the collusion between the Obama administration and the press.

The MSM is nothing but a bunch of pom pom waving democratic activists selling liberal talking points to the masses.

disgusting…..

Thanks for posting that. You found the link on a major news outlet, right? Because they’re all covering this in depth, right? Because lying to the American people about an act of war committed against fellow American citizens is the act of a despicable coward, one whose primary concern is his own re-election, and that’s a major news story. Or at least it would be in any other country. Probably even Iran.

The Presstitutes went through 30,000 of Sarah Palins emails. Lets see the emails between the Ambassador, State Dept and the WhiteHut!

ConcealedKerry on September 26, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Did the State Department only report on diplomatic personnel killed? Were there any military casualties not reported by the State Department? Anybody know?

d1carter on September 26, 2012 at 12:51 PM

State Department is in full CYA mode, reporting nothing. First press reports listed 1 Marine killed (fell from the roof during a mortar attack– whether death was result of the mortar hit or the fall is not stated), 2 Marines injured. Did the injured Marines survive? No one’s saying. Total administration and complicit media blockade on any information about this rescue and the aftermath.

Yep, where are the injured/wounded? Are they being sequestered? If so, why?

Pres Obama hasn’t used the word “terrorism” to describe attack on the Consulate. Carney says he’s trying to provide a “full explanation.”

There is just something not right here. There has got to be a reason, and not just the election, for why there was such a concerted effort to brand the terrorist attack, and the uprisings throughout the Muslim world, as a response to some silly unwatched movie. Within hours of all of this, there was this specific excuse, and only this excuse, repeated ad nauseum, by the administration.

Real journalists would be asking the right questions to get to answers on this. Some part of this story remains untold. The men who died deserve a hunt for the truth.

Baxter Greene on September 26, 2012 at 1:24 PM

Exactly. I don’t remember (again) where I read this, but it was something to the effect that a person just might as well conclude that the MSM is Obama’s unofficial campaign PR arm, because they are not the least bit interested in making even a token attempt to report anything, let alone anything resembling the truth.

Once you conclude that, it’s very easy to ignore anything they say or write.

Posted this the other day and it describes the disaster that is the MSM better than I ever could.

But it’s not an act of war until after the election is over and acts of war need to be fought by the FBI now, if I understand correctly. All while the commander in chief declares himself “eye candy” in front of a bunch of gaggling hens on the View.

scalleywag on September 26, 2012 at 4:09 PM

There are a lot of comments and writings on different sites as to how this whole movie/terror attack was/is a false flag set up. It sure makes a lot of sense. One of them on the Canada Free Press even connects the players from way back during the 2008 campaign and the passport office break in. I would put nothing past this bunch of community organizers and muslim brotherhood lovers,,,,,,we are talking treachery and traitors which should have the firing squads warming up.

For those of us old enough to remember 1979, there are some eerie parallels here:

President fails to support pro-US leader in Mideast:
Carter in Iran in 1979
Obama in Egypt in 2012

Radical Islamists take over government:
Iran in 1979
Egypt and Libya in 2012

US Embassies are attacked:
Tehran in 1979, 55 diplomats taken hostage
Benghazi in 2012, ambassador and 3 others killed

Radical Islamists threaten Israel:
Iran in 1979
Egypt and Iran in 2012

Presidential Election:
1980: After polls were close, Republican Ronald Reagan wins big
2012: After polls were close, ???

From Diplomad:

http://thediplomad.blogspot.com/2012/09/liars-another-in-series-on-obama-and.html

We now see a virtual flood of information pouring out that completely washes away the Obama misadministration’s efforts at “spin,” oh, hell with that, at lying to the American people. There is an excellent piece in The Daily Beast by Eli Lake which further confirms that the misadministration knew it was sending out its spokesmen to lie,

Within 24 hours of the 9-11 anniversary attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi, U.S. intelligence agencies had strong indications al Qaeda–affiliated operatives were behind the attack, and had even pinpointed the location of one of those attackers. Three separate U.S. intelligence officials who spoke to The Daily Beast said the early information was enough to show that the attack was planned and the work of al Qaeda affiliates operating in Eastern Libya.

This jibes 100% with what my own friends at State and CIA were telling me. Lake, furthermore, notes something my contacts did not tell me: that within hours the intel agencies had a couple of names and even addresses of individuals involved.

INC on September 26, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Earlier this week, Diplomad had this piece up:

http://thediplomad.blogspot.com/2012/09/state-vs-cnn-who-is-biggest-loser-and.html

in which he wrote:

Soon after the attack, I saw press snippets and heard from a friend still active in the intel business that the attack was a major intel disaster for the US. According to these sources, the Consulate was a centerpiece in our collection efforts against Islamist radicals in eastern Libya. I had a hard time believing that a “lock-and-leave” facility would have sensitive materials and play a key role in combatting terrorist activity. It seems, however, that it did, and that the attack was a major blow to the CIA presence and operations in Libya. This might help explain the ferocity of the attack on the installation by the Islamist “folks,” to wit, in one spectacular blow kill the Ambassador and knock-out a CIA listening post, and do it all on 9/11. If this proves true, then the stunning flood of stupidity and incompetence we have seen at Obama’s State and Obama’s NSC, also breaks like a tsunami over Obama’s CIA and the rest of Obama’s intel community.

INC on September 26, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Well, according to the Secretary of State, it was Al Queda. I also found this quote from her speech at the UN very interesting:

“Now, with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and their networks in multiple directions,” Mrs. Clinton told world leaders assembled at the United Nations meeting. “And they are working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions under way in North Africa, as we tragically saw in Benghazi.”

Larger safe haven for terrorists? Does that sound like something an Obama supporter would say? Maybe Hill is still holding a grudge.

The lying, stinking pigs in our own government and in our own press tried to put this all off on some poor schmuck that posted a video back in July! Very Nazi of them. When the walls come tumbling down, and they will, there will be hell to pay.
