Bombshell: US knew Stevens assassination was work of terrorists within 24 hours of attack

posted at 9:21 am on September 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Five days after the attack on the Benghazi consulate that left four Americans dead, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, the Obama administration sent UN Ambassador Susan Rice onto five Sunday talk shows to insist that the sacking of the consulate was the result of a protest over a YouTube video that “spun out of control.”  The government of Libya was already scoffing at that story, and by the end of the next week the White House began reluctantly admitting that terrorists had attacked the diplomatic mission.  Today, however, Eli Lake reports for the Daily Beast that the Obama administration knew within 24 hours that the attack had not been a spontaneous event, but a well-planned terrorist attack:

Within 24 hours of the 9-11 anniversary attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi, U.S. intelligence agencies had strong indications al Qaeda–affiliated operatives were behind the attack, and had even pinpointed the location of one of those attackers. Three separate U.S. intelligence officials who spoke to The Daily Beast said the early information was enough to show that the attack was planned and the work of al Qaeda affiliates operating in Eastern Libya. …

The intelligence officials who spoke to The Daily Beast did so anonymously because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press. They said U.S. intelligence agencies developed leads on four of the participants of the attacks within 24 hours of the fire fight that took place mainly at an annex near the Benghazi consulate. For one of those individuals, the U.S. agencies were able to find his location after his use of social media. “We had two kinds of intelligence on one guy,” this official said. “We believe we had enough to target him.”

Another U.S. intelligence official said, “There was very good information on this in the first 24 hours. These guys have a return address. There are camps of people and a wide variety of things we could do.”

A spokesman for the National Security Council declined to comment for the story. But another U.S. intelligence official said, “I can’t get into specific numbers but soon after the attack we had a pretty good bead on some individuals involved in the attack.”

In other words, either Susan Rice lied to the press, or was lied to by the Obama administration and sent out to the press deliberately.  That leaves the national media in a quandry.  Clearly, with only a couple of exceptions, the media hasn’t wanted to address the implications of a successful terrorist attack on an American diplomatic installation … at least not during the Barack Obama presidency.  Now it’s becoming very clear that the administration didn’t just tell them to “f*** off,” the White House actively lied about the attack in order to deflect further questions from the media.

Will national news organizations begin to demand answers about who told Rice to tell that story, and why?  Or will they continue the pattern of last week, in which the media suddenly developed a keen interest in economic policy when the White House narrative on Benghazi began collapsing?  I’m pretty sure I know which way I’m betting.

I saw that article earlier today, and Ed left out how the writer, Eli Lake, bent over backwards to relay the information without attributing any criticism to the Obama administration. “It’s what happened, but it’s really no one’s fault.”

BettyRuth on September 26, 2012 at 9:27 AM

The one saving grace, a tiny bit of hope…the MSM is so ego driven, if they think they have been duped, instead of “in on it”, one or two may react.

If they were briefed and knew the administration was stalling for time, and asked the journalists to go along while the “investigate”, than they will of course give them a pass…however, if they make the MSM look foolish, they lied to them as well, than maybe a few will complain.

And for the record, with this administration the word “investigate” means to investigate a way to place blame on someone else…not to find out the truth.

right2bright on September 26, 2012 at 9:27 AM

From the Daily Beast commentary:

@ChuckxJ @darwinwins we’ve known it was a terrorist attack since the start. the press has stated and the white house has played it down. it’s called keeping a secret. the fact that the narrative has carried on for two weeks allowed the american assets to collect unimpeded. this is not a hard concept to understand.

Ed and fellow Conservatives. While I understand the outrage we all feel about this Libya debacle and I understand our outrage that media has buried the story. I feel a narrative intervention is in order.

We’re not going to be able to work the refs on this enough for it to matter. The media will not jump on this and it will have almost NO effect on this election. Average American doesn’t care about what went down in Libya.

And…complaining about this and about polls and about the media is a waste of time. The only reasonable thing to do at this time, is to do whatever it takes to pressure the Romney Camp to do better and try to refocus these narratives back on people’s pocket books.

Bill Kristol is right. Obama’s been running ads about Romney’s plan costing average american 2K a year and there’s been NO reply. Where are the A List surrogates doing battle with the network anchors? Where’s Paul Ryan on a National Scale? Where is Mitt Romney telling Americans exactly what he is going to do? They need to go all out and try to run OVER the media to have a chance. Neither Mitt nor Ryan are pikers. They’re not Sarah Palin. They can go on these shows and make their case and they are NOT DOING IT!!!

Instead, the empty chair politicized the death of four Americans and the sacking of our embassies to save his foreign policy cred. No need to wonder why he didn’t immediately trot out to a microphone ala notifying us of OBL’s demise.

Here, at HotAir, when the initial reporting came out, a number of us had a fairly reasonable belief with a high degree of certainty that the Benghazi raid was not part of a protest about anything, and was a coordinated, pre-planned terror attack connected with AQ-North Africa or sister organization.

This Team Obama kabuki is like FDR coming out on Monday morning and saying that the attack on Pearl Harbor the day before could not be blamed on the Japanese unless and until a through investigation by the FBI was conducted first…and we’d best not rush to judgement.

If the world’s best, under Team Obama, cannot figure this out within a very short period of time, well, we are all in trouble, big trouble, deep trouble.

It indicates gross stupidity and negligence…or something worse…the willful deception of the American people in order to press home a perceived advantage for Team Obama and Obama’s re-election.

I’m pretty sure Susan Rice knew exactly what had gone down in Libya. The administration’s MO is fairly predictable at this point. Lie, obstruct, deny, do anything necessary to deflect blame. The ends always justify the means. And in the event they get busted in a lie or a promise they make isn’t kept, they count on the media to circle the wagons.

Thus far I’d argue this has not worked for the most part given the election results since 2008(not to mention the sinking ratings and circulation for traditional media outlets). The real test of the American electorate though will be in 41 days.

Way to build respect among nations, Mr. President. Go back and gaggle with the gals on the view, that’s where you belong you vile piece of “eye candy”. Disgusting.

poor ed, bless him, does have his work cut out for him this morn’. ten in ohio, nine in florida, bloody hell.

sesquipedalian on September 26, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Did you bother to read the sampling? Not sure Ed should even bother with those polls.

These polls are meant to manipulate and you buy right in, tool. But, hey, keep thinking this is in the bag. If fact, go ahead and stay home Nov 6., it’s all locked up for O.

What is it going to take for some “journalist” to actually do their job and start questioning Obama hard about this entire situation? What a bunch of pansy fools the media in this country are.

They lied?

I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED!!!

Gunlock Bill on September 26, 2012 at 9:53 AM

The spanish government lost its reelection bid over such a lie in 2004.

Valkyriepundit on September 26, 2012 at 9:37 AM

So you’re saying that Spanish voters are smarter than American voters, right?

Old Fritz on September 26, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Trying to hijack the thread, I see. I would too if I couldn’t defend Dear Leader. Tell us again what Hillary’s “Qualifications” to be Junior US Senator were, much less Secretary of State.

But since you’re citing heavily oversampled “polls” from C-BS and a newspaper that endorsed O’bamna in ’08 and will happily do so again this year, let me tell you of another new survey out, in Blues State Pennsylvania.

There, the new Franklin and Marshall has 59% of PA voters approving the controversial new Voter ID law. 39% oppose.

bloody hell, indeed. How can you Dems win elections now if you’re not allowed to cheat?

Del Dolemonte on September 26, 2012 at 9:48 AM

The left has a federal judge just itching to strike down that law once it passes.

Happened to bump into an associate within 24 hours of the attacks who works at the State Dept. Not high enough up the pay scale to be a reliable source and not on the record but the person was pretty clear that even the people at that level KNEW it was a terrorist attack even then. If a low-level FSO knew it, Rice knew it. She was lying the entire time as far as I’m concerned.

axshon on September 26, 2012 at 9:55 AM

We’re not going to be able to work the refs on this enough for it to matter. The media will not jump on this and it will have almost NO effect on this election. Average American doesn’t care about what went down in Libya.

And…complaining about this and about polls and about the media is a waste of time. The only reasonable thing to do at this time, is to do whatever it takes to pressure the Romney Camp to do better and try to refocus these narratives back on people’s pocket books.

Well said! This looks like DESPERATION more than anything from people that were foolish enough to think that Mitt washy-washy flip-flopper Romney was the right GOP candidate against Obama.
Focusing on what went down in Libya or hoping/praying for more Muslim protests around the work just show how unqualified the Romney campaign is. Since Mitt Romney has NOTHING to offer that can be believed and trusted, the game is to keep bashing Obama on things that EVERYONE already know about him (including his supporters).
People are not voting for Obama because they find him competent (they can all see how bad the economy has been, how big the deficit is and the ineffectiveness of the Middle East policies). They are sticking with him because THEY DON’T TRUST OR LIKE MITT ROMNEY. So far, Romney has not demonstrated that he can do any better than Obama. After all, he championed Obamacare and unless he starts a war against Iran, there isn’t anything else he can do to derail them. Tough talk does not amount to anything. The Iranians are not scared of America or Israel. The only way to prevent them from getting a nuclear bomb is to INVADE Iran. Are we ready for that?

A true conservative could champion Tea Party ideas and bring to the table what went right in 2010. Mitt Romney just isn’t that guy. He is not even John McCain who was a war hero after all. Romney is a lesser Bob Dole: boring, out of touch and definitely not likeable.
The liberal whites, minority and women that will turn out to vote for Obama could care less about the events in Libya. It’s about Romney convincing enough of them that he can do better than Obama and if he fails to do so in the first debate, he is DONE.

When some of there own start to be affected or end dead maybe they may turn. But not before.

bgibbs1000 on September 26, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Of course they knew, because their chosen narrative was a crock of shite from the very beginning, part of a powerplay for empowering the MoBros govt in Egypt. How else do all the principals start parroting the exact same line of BS, BEFORE the flag came down in Cairo. Before Stevens was dead? The MoBros were putting on their 9/11 Rage Boy parade as a stage play for their own people and ours, while a State Dept trade junket was there – on that anniversary of all times, to go traipsing about a failing muslim state! – a junket that included two BS companies led by Podesta’s siblings. And somehow and no doubt thru the Muslima Brotherhood connections of Huma Weiner, Hillary et al were primed for their role to accomodate and ‘empower’ the nascent Egyptian govt, as part of State’s long-term arabism / anti-Israel bullshit. Everybody had their script in hand. And then suddenly a separate jihadist group kills our ambassador in Libya – ON 9/11 – and the whole kabuki dance blows up in their faces. They run with the pre-planned lines, because they were a close enough fit already. And they were so inept and arrogant that they didn’t even move to cement that narrative in Libya, or secure the site where our people were killed. And that’s why they were shrieking about CNN just waltzing in there and retrieving Stevens’ journal. It shattered their fraudulant narrative.

I don’t see this as incompetence on Obama’s foreign policy.
And all politicians lie.
Actually, from a Democratic point of view, its pretty smart.
He will do anything to protect his re-election.
Of course he had to hold back that information, & go with plan B, the video caused all of this & it was a spontaneous attack.
After all, he killed Osama & the world is at peace.
Is there any chance at all we can get Romney to win & send Neville Chamberlain II back to Chicago?

I’m glad the vilest president in the whole history of our nation stood at the UN podium and lied. Maybe if American voters are too stupid to vote him out, other countries will start complaining about his lies and start demanding an impeachment.

scalleywag on September 26, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Obama lied, the ambassador died.

Ted Torgerson on September 26, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Wait I thought they came to take him to the hospital. Don’t tell me the marxist lied again.

bgibbs1000 on September 26, 2012 at 9:29 AM

That was one of the more bizarre lies. There was video showing the mob pulling Stevens’ body out of the “safe” house, and you could hear shouts of praise to Allah and cries of victory, and then several people whipped out their cell phones and had photos snapped of themselves posing with Stevens’ body. His eyes were partially open, you could see his pupils were fixed and non-reactive to changes in the light, his lips were dark blue from lack of oxygen — he was quite obviously dead, and yet the WH stooges kept peddling the ludicrous lie that the savage mob were noble Libyan citizens trying to “help” him.

Orwell would have blushed at the shamelessness of the Obama crew.

AZCoyote on September 26, 2012 at 9:59 AM

This too shall pass, don’t get your panties in a bundle.

I mean the guy didn’t meet with foreign leaders because Romney is better than him. Why wouldn’t he do it, really.
