Obama: “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam”

posted at 2:01 pm on September 25, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

President Obama addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on Tuesday morning, and while there were a few moments when he at least talked a good game on free speech, there were also moments that left much to be desired on that same front and on the real nature of the root causes of unrest in the Middle East.

Here are some key excerpts (you can read the full prepared remarks here):

But the attacks of the last two weeks are not simply an assault on America. They are also an assault on the very ideals upon which the United Nations was founded – the notion that people can resolve their differences peacefully; that diplomacy can take the place of war; and that in an interdependent world, all of us have a stake in working towards greater opportunity and security for our citizens.

If we are serious about upholding these ideals, it will not be enough to put more guards in front of an Embassy; or to put out statements of regret, and wait for the outrage to pass. If we are serious about those ideals, we must speak honestly about the deeper causes of this crisis. Because we face a choice between the forces that would drive us apart, and the hopes we hold in common.

Today, we must affirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers. Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations.

So far, not bad. But then, for some reason, the president felt the need to bring in, criticize, and apologize for the YouTube video that we’re to believe was the catalyst that sparked these inexcusable recent events — even though, really, that video is not what any of this is or should be about at all, and I’m not really sure why it’s something the president feels the continual need to explain away.

That is what we saw play out the last two weeks, as a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world. I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video, and I believe its message must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity. It is an insult not only to Muslims, but to America as well – for as the city outside these walls makes clear, we are a country that has welcomed people of every race and religion. We are home to Muslims who worship across our country. We not only respect the freedom of religion – we have laws that protect individuals from being harmed because of how they look or what they believe. We understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them.

I know there are some who ask why we don’t just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech. Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. Moreover, as President of our country, and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so. Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views – even views that we disagree with.

Again, not a bad rundown of our free-speech values, but if we believe that all people have a right to express their views, even ones with which we disagree, why are we still talking about this dumb video? The video is not the point. The Obama administration has already had to revise their original version of the chaos in Libya and labeled it as the terrorism that it was, but President Obama conspicuously failed to mention terrorism in relation to Libya in his speech. Why do I feel like this was a speech designed to sound so-so on promoting our American values but simultaneously pander to the people who would criticize us for them? There was an opportunity for a real display of strength and courage here in the wake of all of this unacceptable violence, and the president declined to take it.

Here’s a reaction from former UN Ambassador John Bolton:

Just heard that John Sununu will be on Hannity tonight to tear ‘lil bammie’s speech to shreds. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Barack Obama has just doubled-down on the sentiment his ghostwriter Bill Ayers expressed for him in his book, “Dreams of My Father” where he said he’d stand with Islam when the winds of change blew against it…or some other nonsense. Today, Obama spoke out against free speech and wished for a world where those who criticize Islam will be punished (or even executed) worldwide.
Let’s be really clear about this, folks: the man sitting in the Oval Office thinks it’s a good idea for global blasphemy laws to be enacted to serve a worldwide state religion, ISLAM.
If you are a Christian and vote for Barack Obama, you are a damn fool.
If you are a Jew and vote for Barack Obama, you are suicidal.
If you are a Buddhist, a Hindu, or anything besides a Muslim and you vote for Barack Obama, then something is wrong with you.
Obama has taken a side, and that side is with anti-blasphemy laws to protect Islam at the expense of long-treasured American right like free speech.
What Obama did at the UN in this speech is against everything an American president should ever do while in office.
Honestly, I think he did it because he knows he’s not going to be in office much longer. This is not a speech given by someone who thinks he is going to win re-election. This is a Muslim man taking advantage of his position while he still can and saying things he wants established as precedent before he leaves office. While he’s still president, Obama is giving Islam everything it wants so that in the future Muslims can point to things Obama has done and demand future US Presidents follow his example or face the fury of Islam for not going along with the established Obama Doctrine of dhimmihood to medievalist member of a death cult.
I would not be surprised if sometime between November 6th and January 20th Barack Hussein Obama called a press conference and revealed to the world that he in fact considers himself to be a Muslim, and always had, but needed to conceal that while he was running for office. He will then declare himself to be the historic and unprecedented first Muslim president. He will then demand the history books record him as such, so that Islam can boast that a Muslim was the 44th President of the United States.
This is a gay biracial man who every day alters his personal identity in whatever way he deems best suited to achieving some personal goal. His true colors regarding Islam are now clearly on display. Not even Jimmy Carter would have gone to the UN and demanded punishment for “those who slander the prophet of Islam”.
As my friend Reba would say, “I’ve lived too long. I can’t take this weird s*** anymore. This should be a joke…but I know that it’s not”.

Great article from HillBuzz Read this please!!!!!!

Obama was providing sound bites for the Arab media. The parts about respecting Chrisitanity and Judaism will never make it onto Muslim TV.

The Muslims will think he is going to institute blasphemy laws and turn over the producer of the anti-Islam film for trial in Egypt.

The longer clips will make it onto the MSM which wll be so impressed for Obama’s calls for “tolerance” (but will ignore any criticism of “art” that offends Christians).

Already provided the context, with appropriate formatting, you weasel.

It doesn’t diminish it one bit. He compares the slander of the prophet of Islam(note, by the way, only his reference to Islam…he doesn’t claim any other prophets should be free from slander in the future) to the targeting of human beings for violence.

And you think it’s just dandy.

MadisonConservative on September 25, 2012 at 2:27 PM

The best defense for Obama’s statement is the argument that it’s too vapid a bit of rhetoric to have any real meaning. That is, “the future must not belong to” is just nice-sounding words to express disapproval of a group of people.

But even that goes too far for a political figure. Any criticism of Mohammed can be characterized as slander, and no president has any right or business to declare a prophet or religion to be above slander.

Mohammed was a bloody man who instituted a reign of terror, destroyed whole tribes for no more offense than not accepting him as a prophet, practiced treachery, killed other men so he could take their treasure, their children, and their wives, and issued moral rules for others while ignoring them for himself. Even his followers knew perfectly well that Mohammed had a lot more wives than the four that they were allowed. And he did all this while claiming to “restore” the religion of Abraham — as if it had been lost, rather than had simply developed into Judaism. He justified all this evil by declaring it was the will of God.

Speaking of “slander,” didn’t Dante’s Inferno show Mohammed as being in the depths of hell? Wouldn’t that be considered slander also? Don’t tell Obama, or he’ll rush out to denounce the whole Renaissance.

Barack HUSSEIN Obama with this speech repudiated the oath he took when he assumed office.

I don’t desire an islamic dark age any more than I do a post-American dark age when we are driven to bankruptcy and ruin by Obama’s brand of socialism.

No civilized man can support EITHER islam or socialism. If there is any exception that should be carved in the First Amendment it would be to deny the foreign subversive and seditious political system that seeks the DESTRUCTION of the Constitution that is known as islam.

aniptofar on September 25, 2012 at 2:05 PM

My only difference of opinion with what you wrote there ^^ is that I have always ASSUMED Obama was Muslim as per his ‘thinking’ — that is, though he may ‘join’ or not join whatever (Wright’s awful place, a mosque, get a handful of Progressives with collars to advise him, whatever) — his MIND functions as, his values, his perspectives, all are “of Islam”. That means, since Obama’s of the ‘intellectual class’ in his own mind, he’s also in and OF the “Muslim Mind”.

So it’s never been an issue what label he wears — we know he can and does wear any label that he thinks fancies his success, like costumes he puts on for appearance’s sake — but that he’s always been a spokesperson or tool to fascilitate what Islam wants.

Thus, he’s “muslim” as I define who the man is. Claiming he isn’t is like a spotted beast claiming he’s polished marble — anyone observing reality can quickly see that the spotted beast is, indeed, not polished marble but a spotted beast.

So when you see someone arrested for having a Bible study in his family room,
when you read someone is shot to death for defending himself from armored intruders breaking down his door at night,
when you read someone is arrested for not watching her playing children closely enough,
when you see someone is pulled out of his home at night to discuss his movie trailer,
when you read some child’s lemonade stand is shut down for not having a proper permit,
when you see people pulled out of their cars and handcuffed on the sidewalk because the police are sure that an armed criminal is in the immediate area,
when you hear your head of government say that it was not the Koran itself, but it was the video of Islam or the cartoon of Islam that caused the death of Americans, remember that this is all in principle the same abuse of law enforcement as entering homes looking for a mocking video, Islamo-skeptical books or perhaps the remains of a charred Koran.

But I forgot, the future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam.

Because “our” President doesn’t think of himself as an American. He doesn’t want to see Americans thrive. He doesn’t respect our culture, values, or society. He was raised a black Muslim in Indonesia and then a black attending Hawaii’s most exclusive school. These are not the experiences that we need in a President.

When I looked, Malkin had put it up without comment. Conservative bloggers have complained about Romney’s performances throughout the campaign but none of his shortcomings compared with theirs today. They are literally MIA on a day when Romney was brilliant.

As I’ve said for months, we need new pundits. Ours are practically useless.

Basilsbest on September 25, 2012 at 7:42 PM

MadisonConservative on September 25, 2012 at 7:17 PM

For some they are not two different things; I myself believe the fact that Romney is NOT Ojesus is ample reason to vote for him.

He’s not Reagan or Jefferson either, but he’s damn sure not Ojugears or Jimmuh Cahtuh.

hillbillyjim on September 25, 2012 at 7:45 PM

Barack Obama gave another lousy anti-American values speech today. Ho hum.

The big news today is that his rival Mitt Romney gave a fabulous speech. I can understand the MSM embargo on Romney’s great speech, but why are conservative blogs, including Hot Air, not giving this speech the air time it deserves.

VIDEO HERE

Basilsbest on September 25, 2012 at 6:34 PM

I don’t think it’s Hot Air’s duty to cover every story or speech offered by Mitt.

You’re free to start your own adulatory blog, though.

I’m glad Hot Air covered this. I was curious to see whether Obama groveled or stood. It appears he went with a slight cringe and appeasing tone.

Still, I thought it would be worse. At moments, he seemed to defend free speech, before suggesting that any speech that criticized Islam might be free, but was still disgusting and reprehensible.

Good solid B+. Well, C+ anyway.

That’s the problem with absolutes. I live on an island in the middle of the lake. You buy the lake from previous owner and declare that trespassers will be shot, no exception.

My right to life is now threatened by your right to your property. The former, in any civil society tramples the latter.

Not being able to shout fire in a crowded public place technically takes away my right but it’s accepted in our civil society.

If we start dealing in absolutes our entire civilization will fall apart.

lester on September 25, 2012 at 4:05 PM

Absolutely ridiculous. If you have no legal right to be on the island, your dumb ass ought not be there to begin with. If you do have that right, then your premise falls apart as nonsense anyway.

There are absolutes in life, whether you recognize them or not.

There is also VERY strong evidence mohammed never existed. He and islam don’t start showing up in the historical accounts of others until more than half a century after the Arabs swathe of conquests of Roman and Persian territories in the 630′s.

Indeed, Roman (Byzantine) historians, who would have certainly noted the nightmare invasions that within decades reduced the Roman Empire from owning the Mediterranean to islands, enclaves in Italy, and Asia Minor and the south Balkans…

The Romans lost 2/3rds of their territory between 634 and 700…

Think their historians of the time would have noted it was because of a new religion?

So many things wrong in such a short sentence.
1. Who is he to decide to whom the future belongs?
2. Slander is made a high–maybe the highest–crime. He doesn’t say the future must not belong to murderers or terrorists.
3. As many have said, just being a Christian or a Jew means you have slandered Mohammed. Therefore, the future must not belong to Christians or Jews.
4. Imagine if he had replaced “the prophet of Islam” with the words “our Lord Jesus Christ.” The world would be in an uproar, and rightly so.
5. We have a right to “slander” any dead person we want to slander. That is freedom of speech and thought.
His statement is so scary on so many levels. People need to hear him saying this. Conservatives and conservative media and our candidates need to talk this up. Any chance of a debate moderator or even a member of the press asking him to clarify exactly what he meant by that statement?

Here’s he entire paragraph that bullshiite line came from:

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied. Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims, and Shia pilgrims. It is time to heed the words of Gandhi: “Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.” Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies. That’s the vision we will support.

I shouldn’t have to go to another source to see the context which you do not point out here.

I dislike Obama as much as the next person, but let’s be a little more honest with the headlines.

Drudge has been a major let down in that regard this year. Its like they don’t bother to check things or they do it purposely. People like us take it and run only to find out, it was false or out of context clearly. We are Conservatives and we should be better than that. Don’t do the same crap we expect the left to

Romney does a great job today, and people are so busy trying to rip Obamas speech apart, that Romney doesn’t get covered when he should. Attacking O over every single word isn’t going to help or do much to get people who are undecided to vote for Romney. We had three years to do that. Philly on September 25, 2012 at 9:14 PM

As much as I would love to agree with you, Hannety and Sununu let Trippi talk and usurp most of the time telling blatant lies. I lost all respect for Hannety, he is in charge of HIS show and yet lets these idiots take most of the time telling lies, day in and day out. He really needs to get a set of balls, like a number of female counterparts on Fox, and just keep repeating “You Lie!” as these idiots spew their hatred for USA and lies. They keep talking, Hannety should just keep on saying “You Lie!” as long as it takes. As is, he lets them state lies and they do stick, one way or another.

Fox is not what it used to be. Save for Gutfeld and occasional guests (Allen West, Palin, Newt) I really don’t want to watch, I am more fired up against people like Hannety for allowing an outlet and then plenty of time to idiots to spew their hatred and lies. This is not “balanced” covering in any way when most of the voices are rabid liberals and most of the time is given to them. Saying that Beckel is a close friend and a great guy and we “simply don’t understand that” doesn’t really sit well with me, its like Hussein telling us that liberals are the smart set and we are all stupid.

Senate voted this past Saturday to keep feeding money to Middle East radicals, who then use it to a) buy arms with that money to attack and kill our citizens and b) place bounty on US citizens heads. So, we’re paying for killing of our citizens, only 10 GOP Senators voted No, the rest sided with liberals.

Where is Fox and its coverage of that? Where is Fox covering the faked anti-militia demonstrations in Libya? Where is Fox asking what did Libya government do in the 30 minutes between militia showed up and start of the attack on our Libyan Consulate?

Fox sold out long time ago, Murdochs decided turning liberal was more expeditious than serving time they deserved.

Have you noticed that in the past few years, and especially in the past few weeks since the murder of the Ambassador and his guards and colleague in Benghazi (a city that Erwin Rommel loved and whose inhabitants he praised), whenever the New York Times refers to Mohammed, they always call him, without quotation marks, The Prophet Mohammed, as if everyone with any sense understands that OF COURSE Mohammed is The One True Prophet and that it’s just understood that Mohammed is The Prophet.

I see this in other news outlets and on TV, too. Sober-looking newsmen and newswomen mention Mohammed as The Prophet Mohammed. No ifs, ands or buts. I hear it on the BBC World Service, too.

Where all Christendom had him until the recent failure of will and mind by the lily-livered among the suicidal Christian sects who have forgotten all history in favor of the kumbayahall faiths are the same” fantasy.

Islam is not the same as any other faith.

What do you do for a living, Dave? Do i have a right that you work for me for free? Seriously; what do you do – I want you do do some of it for me, right now, absolutely free. I’d like you to produce something of value for me that I may have – not because you want to give it to me, but simply because I have a right to it – right now, if you please. And make it of significant value, because I have significant rights! Healthcare – mine and the others I have to pay for who are unrelated to me – costs a lot, so I want a bunch of value out of you, my friend.

My house needs painting – may I demand that a house painter come do it free of charge? How about my tax accountant – the government forces me to pay taxes, so my accountant should have to do my taxes for free I suppose?

I hate to ask *again*, Dave, but how f@#$ing stupid are you? You are entitled to nothing more than what you can endeavor to do and create and build *by your self*. You are *not* remotely entitled or hold rights over anything that demands my time, my resources, etc. And if you think you do, well simply put, f@#$ you.
