Obama: Sacked consulate and dead ambassador “bumps in the road”

posted at 10:01 am on September 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The next of a few problematic statements from Barack Obama’s 60 Minutes interview comes to us from The Weekly Standard, which catches Obama in an least an unfortunate bit of phraseology.  Steve Kroft asks Obama whether the attacks on American embassies around the Muslim world, and especially in Libya and Egypt following Obama’s military and diplomatic interventions, had changed his mind about the Arab Spring.  Obama gives a you-gotta-break-a-few-eggs-to-make-an-omelette response that’s pretty inappropriate, considering the outcome in Benghazi:

Well, I’d said even at the time that this is going to be a rocky path. The question presumes that somehow we could have stopped this wave of change. I think it was absolutely the right thing for us to do to align ourselves with democracy, universal rights– a notion that– people have- to be able to– participate– in– their own governance. But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because– you know, in a lot of these places– the one organizing principle– has been Islam. The one part of society that hasn’t been controlled completely by the government. There are strains of extremism, and anti-Americanism, and anti-Western sentiment. And you know can be tapped into by demagogues. There will probably be some times where we bump up against some of these countries and have strong disagreements, but I do think that over the long term, we are more likely to get a Middle East and North Africa that is more peaceful, more prosperous and more aligned with our interests.

In the longer answer, Obama says that he didn’t have much choice in the matter — but that’s not true at all.  Obama actively pushed Hosni Mubarak to give up power a mere eight days after protests started in Tahrir Square, even though the government hadn’t done anything to suppress them.  Obama made the decision to bomb Libya and depose Moammar Qaddafi militarily, which had the unfortunate and totally predictable consequence of allowing al-Qaeda and other radical Islamist terror networks (Ansar al-Sharia, especially) carte blanche to operate in the eastern part of the country.  In both countries, Obama allowed critical power vacuums to arise that could only be filled by radical groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and these terror networks.

The violence isn’t a mere “bump in the road,” and neither are the rise of these groups to power.  They are going to be national-security concerns for the next several decades.  That’s the outcome we wanted to avoid, and the one reason why we allied ourselves with Mubarak and ended up in an arms-length relationship with Qaddafi.  The assassination of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and the sacking of the Benghazi consulate weren’t “bumps in the road,” either, unless one thinks that kind of thing is normal even between diplomatic antagonists.

Finally, listen to Obama explain about how democratization trumped American security concerns in the region and the calculus of our alliances.  With that in mind, care to guess what the Saudis might be thinking?  I’d guess that they’re recalculating their own alliances to avoid becoming “bumps” in Obama’s road.

I never thought I would see the day when the President of the United States would have this much hate for America.

I can hardly wait to hear what Obama will say in his UN speech, tomorrow.

I’m sure he’ll make us all proud to be Americans.

“bump in the road”

Let’s see if Mr. “I’m From Chicago!” has the guts to say that directly to the faces of the Stevens family!

pilamaye on September 24, 2012 at 11:05 AM

you know, in a lot of these places– the one organizing principle– has been Islam. The one part of society that hasn’t been controlled completely by the government.

Well, given that islam is itself a system of government, this is problematic.

This guy is supposed to be the smartest person in the room? Must be a pretty dumb room.

… and the funny thing is that libs over here are always projecting about this so-called theocratic state that any politician who is a committed Christian will implement.

AZfederalist on September 24, 2012 at 11:06 AM

This is not the first time he used that phrase. He got booed before

‘There are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery,’’ President Obama said at a Jeep plant in Toledo the other day. “We’re going to pass through some rough terrain that even a Wrangler would have a tough time with.’’ His audience booed. They’re un-fire-able union members with lavish benefits, and even they weary of the glib lines from his twelve-year-old speechwriters.

And Romney made an ad about it…

I would not characterize them as idiots. The bunch in the
White House are grifters who lie and manipulate the lazy and naieve voter. Unfortunately, I believe that approximately 30% of registered voters fit this discription.

You can’t have these lying, manipulators in power without a willing press.

Bush: This is not a “War against Islam”

Obama: This is not a “War on Terror”

Obama on 1st anniversary on Osama bin Laden’s death: “We can see the light of a new day on the horizon. As we emerge from a decade of conflict abroad and economic crisis at home, it’s time to renew America. This time of war began in Afghanistan, and this is where it will end. The goal that I set to defeat al Qaeda and deny it a chance to rebuild is now within our reach.”

John Brennan said that AQ was destroyed.

War on Islam, Terror, Al Qaeda.

If all of the above is true, then just who have we been and are we fighting?

If the “War on Whatever” is to end in Afghanistan, then why are new, more powerful fronts opening in Libya, Yemen, Somalia, etc? Why are our relations in more peril with countries like Pakistan and Egypt?

Resist We Much on September 24, 2012 at 11:13 AM

The Presidents ho hum response is a huge clue to the way he thinks and the followers of this man haven’t a clue but blind obedience to follow his every whim. Having a back bone and a sense of rightness is very lacking with the left who only curse and swear and speak metaphors for their defense and their offense.

If the “War on Whatever” is to end in Afghanistan, then why are new, more powerful fronts opening in Libya, Yemen, Somalia, etc? Why are our relations in more peril with countries like Pakistan and Egypt?

If we cannot define our enemy, how can we define “victory”…assuming that such is an objective?

They want him to win, bad, really bad. He gave Obama enough rope to make him look good to the dopes.

I read that Steven’s body was missing for five hours before it turned up at the hospital. How does a body just turn up at a hospital? There should be an investigation on the truth or cover-up, but that would take Congress to do its job, and they won’t. They sat in on the briefing, gave their statements, and then went home until the election is over.

verbaluce on September 24, 2012 at 11:56 AM

The most egregious thing about this sordid state of state is that the assassinated ambassador, Christopher Stevens, was appointed to his post in Libya by President Obama. That means Obama personally chose Stevens, and probably met with him, sending him into the Libya that Obama had created to represent America and the President. Obama sent Stevens into harms way and then went to bed when he heard the embassy was under attack. And when Stevens was killed doing a service Obama asked of him, killed largely because of Obama’s actions in that country, Obama termed him a “bump in the road”.

That’s beyond “cold” and bordering on psychopathic.

Add “bump in the road” to the four dead being a result of “natural protests” albeit Obama’s “number-one priority”.

From Univision interview:

Question: We have reports that the White House said today that the attacks in Libya were a terrorist attack. Do you have information indicating that it was Iran, or al Qaeda was behind organizing the protests?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, we’re still doing an investigation, and there are going to be different circumstances in different countries. And so I don’t want to speak to something until we have all the information. What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests –

Also from the Univision interview, this:
“And my number-one priority is always to keep our diplomats safe and to keep our embassies safe.” <== FAILURE

In summary:
‘it is only “natural” that the four are now dead given “bumps in the road” that were bigger than my “number-one priority” as President’.

I have no doubt that much could have been done differently and that many of the factors that resulted in the death of Stevens and the others are deserving of criticism.

Then name one. Give us one example of the factors that resulted in the death of Stevens and the others that you have criticized.

But as far as working angles to politicize this tragedy, I’ll leave that to others.

Oh, you mean like attacking Romney’s statement on the response the Cairo embassy put out before even addressing the deaths in Libya?

Or, using the casket carrying Ambassador Stevens’ body as a photo-op before jetting off to Vegas for a fundraiser?

Or, sending Susan Rice out on 5 Sunday morning shows to push a narrative, when reports had already been discovered to show that it was false?

Hmm, now why would the administration do things like that? It couldn’t possibly have been working angles to politicize this tragedy, could it?

This man is an unmitigated disaster as President. It will be unforgivable if the GOP and Romney cannot defeat him.

besser tot als rot on September 24, 2012 at 12:48 PM

To understand his “bump in the road” quip, you only have to understand Obama’s sense of relative perspective on events around him.

Take as an example, the perspective that Benjamin Disraeli had when it came to his rivalry with William Gladstone: during an interview, someone asked him to describe the difference between a disaster and a catastrophe. Disraeli replied,

“If London Bridge were to collapse while Gladstone was crossing it, that would be a disaster. If Gladstone were to survive, that would be a catastrophe.”

Now just freshen up the quote a little bit for the 21st century, and Obama’s distinctions would be,

“If foreign terrorists attacked one of our consulates and murdered the ambassador, that would be a bump in the road. If that same incident were to jeopardize my reelection bid, that would be a catastrophe.”

Remember, to the narcissist other people are indistinguishable from inanimate objects. Their inherent value, if they have any, is measured solely in their usefulness to the narcissist himself. Conversely, other people only come up on his threat radar only if they have the potential to get between him and what he wants.

To Obama, Ambassador Stevens was a thing, surrounded by three other things, and when those things got destroyed it inconvenienced him. But you have to keep things in perspective: the terrorists weren’t trying to kill him, so when it comes to what really matters what happened was just a “bump in the road.”

Ambassadors, like buildings or other things – and really, what’s the difference? – can be replaced. No big deal.

It’d only become a big deal to him if somehow what happened might hurt him in the polls. But pretty clearly, he doesn’t see that happening right now. So really, what’s all the fuss about?

It was a terrorist attack, you scum-sucking coward. Us “bumping up against” them implies some sort of, say, territorial dispute in which we are asserting our own interests. When terrorists attack us simply because we’re free and that bothers them, it’s not “bumping up against” anyone. There is no understanding or justification or nuance to be teased out of this situation.

He should also have been countered with a question of which nation, exactly, we were attacked by, if we’re “bumping up against” other nations. Is he implying the terrorist attack was sponsored by someone?

Gutless.

I can hardly wait to hear what Obama will say in his UN speech, tomorrow.

I’m sure he’ll make us all proud to be Americans.

Hold on there, verbosity. That’s your messiah’s quote, not Ed’s. Why are you blaming Ed for a quote Obama made? Reading compresension difficulties, perhaps? Or, simply in a state of denial?

kingsjester on September 24, 2012 at 1:19 PM

So…again…what is the (latest) conspiracy theory?
Or is it just an assumption?

verbaluce on September 24, 2012 at 11:19 AM

So…you believe that it actually WAS a conspiracy theory ?…LOL..Not only are you generally unobservant ( read STUPID), you then phrase it as something it’s not. Try this…Obama and Clinton are incompetent, negligent, inexcusable, bumbling, clumsy, could have completely prevented it, predictable and finally amateurish. And then they lied on top of it with a crap arsed excuse using a you tube video as their rationale for the murder of Americans.

Your ignorance knows no bounds.

Jerk.

DevilsPrinciple on September 24, 2012 at 1:21 PM

In Obama’s world Islamist attacking our embassies and killing our diplomats are just “bumps in the road”.

Israel’s concern about being wiped off the map is just “noise”.

Civilians killed in drone strikes are counted as “militants”.

Iran is not a threat it’s “a tiny country”.

Oh and children are “punishment”.

He as no conscience. His supporters are not only uninformed and naive I don’t think they want to know who Obama really is as a human being. The truth is too ugly.

Obama redefines Israel. Jews in the US, take note.

But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because– you know, in a lot of these places– the one organizing principle– has been Islam. The one part of society that hasn’t been controlled completely by the government.

I find this the bold part just as shocking as considering our ambassador and three other Americans “bumps in the road.” Obama sees Islam as the saving grace of the Middle East. He sees it as freedom.

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.

This is why CBS was right to publish appropriate information from Stevens’ journal. A good commenter yesterday tried to analogize it to the discovery of Anne Frank’s diary. Thing is, in the post-war environment western government were not trying to deny the holocaust. Our current overlords are trying desperately to deny their disastrous failure in the ME, especially the state department.

These idiots are trying to treat us like 1940s citizens whose only news comes by word of mouth and a handful of television and radio outlets. The state and corporate crony monopoly on information framing is being rapidly eroded by the internet and it seems to be making them act more brazenly than ever.

Good on CBS for parsing the contents and forgoing publication of personal details while releasing critical information to the public. If they’d turned it over to the state department like good little media sheep (my apologies to your ovis aries) no doubt it would have been another casualty of the “catastrophic intelligence loss” at the consulate.

Let us hope that in a few years, we will look back at Mr. Obama and his administration as a very unfortunate “bump in the road” in the history of the United States.

Should be Clinton, friend of radical islam and employer to Muslim Sisters member. And with exactly same level of security Clinton afforded Stevens. Nothing more and nothing less.

With that in mind, care to guess what the Saudis might be thinking? I’d guess that they’re recalculating their own alliances to avoid becoming “bumps” in Obama’s road.

I’ve been thinking that their increase in oil production of late is an effort to keep tight with the West. They may wish to consider contributing to a super PAC or two.
