Obama: Israel’s concerns on Iran “noise” I’m going to block out

posted at 8:41 am on September 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

In the first of a couple of notably eye-opening passages from Barack Obama’s appearance on 60 Minutes last night, Steve Kroft asked the President whether he was getting his ear bent by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu over Iran.  Obama blew off a meeting request from Netanyahu, who has made clear his unhappiness with the Obama administration’s unwillingness to set “red lines” on Iranian progress toward a nuclear weapon.  Obama told Kroft that while Israel was “one of our closest allies in the region,” when he decides on what to do about Iran, he intends to ignore “noise” from everyone else but his own team.  The Weekly Standard has the transcript:

STEVE KROFT: “How much pressure have you been getting from Prime Minister Netanyahu to make up your mind to use military force in Iran?”

PRESIDENT OBAMA: “Well—look, I have conversations with Prime Minister Netanyahu all the time. And I understand and share Prime Minister Netanyahu’s insistence that Iran should not obtain a nuclear weapon, because it would threaten us, it would threaten Israel, and it would threaten the world and kick off a nuclear arms race.”

STEVE KROFT:  “You’re saying, you don’t feel any pressure from Prime Minister Netanyahu in the middle of a campaign to try and get you to change your policy and draw a line in the sand? You don’t feel any pressure?”

PRESIDENT OBAMA: “When it comes to our national security decisions—any pressure that I feel is simply to do what’s right for the American people. And I am going to block out—any noise that’s out there. Now I feel an obligation, not pressure but obligation, to make sure that we’re in close consultation with the Israelis—on these issues. Because it affects them deeply. They’re one of our closest allies in the region. And we’ve got an Iranian regime that has said horrible things that directly threaten Israel’s existence.”

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul provided a response that not only ripped Obama for dismissing Israel’s extremely valid concerns over Iran’s nuclear program as “noise,” but also for Obama’s odd qualifiers on Israel’s status as an ally:

“Tonight on 60 Minutes, President Obama called Israel’s legitimate concern about the impact of an Iran armed with nuclear weapons ‘noise’ and referred to Israel as merely ‘one of our closest allies in the region.’ This is just the latest evidence of his chronic disregard for the security of our closest ally in the Middle East. Governor Romney’s views stand in sharp contrast to the President’s. Governor Romney strongly believes that Israel is our most important ally in the Middle East and that support for Israel is essential to extending freedom, peace and democracy throughout the region. As president, Governor Romney will restore and protect the close alliance between our nation and the state of Israel.”

Israel isn’t “one of our closest allies in the region”; it’s our closest ally in the region, and it’s not even a matter of subjective debate.  Who would be closer?  Egypt?  Oh, wait, Obama wouldn’t even commit to the idea of Egypt being an ally at all.  The Saudis?  We do a lot of business with the Saudis, but they’ve hardly been the kind of ally Israel has been — and if Obama wants to talk about democratization as the basic qualifier (which I’ll address later), then the Saudis don’t qualify at all.  It’s certainly not the Iranians, nor the Libyans, especially in the eastern part of the country.

If we are to stop Iran from gaining and then using nuclear weapons, then Israel has to be a very close partner in that effort.  The concerns of our friends over an Iranian nuclear program that will undoubtedly target them — and probably be used against them sooner rather than later — is anything but noise.

Neither will Iran.

But Obama is going to make room for one, somewhere.

This is good! Please, continue to push away more and more Jewish voters, Mr. Obama. We all knew you could do it (show your true feelings towards Israel on a more open stage eventually)!

The Weekly Standard update:

AHMADINEJAD: “I have spoken about this topic at length, previously. We generally speaking do not take very seriously the issue of the Zionists and the possible dangers emanating from them. Of course they would love to find a way for their own salvation by making a lot of noise and to raise stakes in order to save themselves. But I do not believe they will succeed. Iran is also a very well recognized country and her defensive powers are very clear.”

Found the link to this article at PJ Media.

If Obama’s education was funded by Saudis it would explain his disastrous ME foreign policy. Vernon Jarrett was the future father in law of Valerie Jarrett.

“What possible significance could all this have? We may never know, but Vernon Jarrett, back in 1979, thought that OPEC’s intention to fund black and minority education would have huge political ramifications. As Jarrett wrote:

“The question of financial aid from the Arabs could raise a few extremely interesting questions both inside and outside the black community. If such contributions are large and sustained, the money angle may become secondary to the sociology and politics of such an occurrence.” (1)

He was, of course, right.

As Jarrett suggests, any black institutions and presumably individuals who became beholden to Arab money might be expected to continue the trend of American “new black advocacy for a homeland for the Palestinians” and presumably for other Islamic and Arabic interests in the Middle East. For that reason, if for no other, the question of how President Obama’s college education was funded is of considerably more than academic interest…

When he says “his own team” he means the violent jihadist mullahs in the middle east. His brothers in arms.

Now, this wasn’t a “live” interview was it? So he had time to remove this, or restate it, or God forbid, think better of actually saying it out loud? So, he means it- he MEANT to slap Netanyahu with it.

More of the same. When Bush was in office, you often could not tell the difference between a democrat press release and one coming from one of the Middle Eastern islamic states.

AZfederalist on September 24, 2012 at 8:52 AM

The most bizarre thing about all this is that liberals can’t figure out why we oppose Obama.

Liam on September 24, 2012 at 8:52 AM

Obama’s problem is his words don’t mean what he thinks they mean. He believes he can create a reality just by talking.

I understand and share Prime Minister Netanyahu’s insistence that Iran should not obtain a nuclear weapon

When he’s not saying stuff that’s just not so, he’s giving lip service to important issues, like he’s given lip service to our national debt problem, entitlement reform, adhering to public financing limits, transparency, airing policy deliberations on C-Span, improving race relations, changing Washington. All very high-minded, worthwhile causes, and he’s made all of them worse.

Most of what Obama says ultimately doesn’t mean anything, because it’s “just words”.

Paul-Cincy on September 24, 2012 at 8:52 AM

Here’s the PJ media link to the 1979 article.

“The shocker in Miele’s article is that the 1979 story was written by none other than Vernon Jarrett- the leftist journalist who was the future father-in-law of Varlerie Jarrett, now Obama’s top advisor. Jarrett, as Miele notes, was “one of the best friends and a colleague of Frank Marshall Davis,” the black Communist who became influential in the life of Barack Obama. In his article, Jarrett wrote that those receiving these funds would help create a “new black advocacy for a homeland for the Palestinians” and presumably support other Arab interests in the Middle East.

Miele’s find deserves widespread attention. In 2008, Percy Sutton’s claim was denigrated as the ramblings of an old man close to senility, and had no legs. Now, Miele shows that al-Mansour was involved in trying to get Arab money for American blacks in 1979, and it gives new credibility to Sutton’s claim that he was approached by Mansour at the time Obama was trying to get accepted to Harvard Law…”

FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

The first debate at the University of Denver in Colorado, a swing state, is set for October 3. Its moderator will be PBS NewsHour Executive Editor Jim Lehrer and the theme will be domestic policy.

VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

The only vice presidential debate will cover a wide swath of foreign and domestic issues and be held at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on October 11. ABC’s Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz will moderate it.

SECOND PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

The second presidential encounter will be in a “town meeting” format and voters will directly question the candidates on myriad issues, according to the CPD’s website.

It will be held at Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York, which hosted the final debate between Obama and Arizona Senator John McCain in the 2008 election. It is set for October 16 and will be moderated by Candy Crowley, host of CNN’s State of the Union show.

THIRD PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

The final debate takes place at Lynn University in Boca Raton in the battleground state of Florida on October 22. Its focus will be on foreign policy and the moderator will be Bob Schieffer, host of CBS’s Face The Nation show.

Schedule notwithstanding, I can’g imagine Foreign Policy NOT imposing itself in a big way at all four debates.

Serious question. Does Obama actually want Iran to have nukes? I don’t mean is he just ok with it or resigned to the growing possibility? I know Dinesh D’Sousa theorized that Obama wants to even the nuclear playing field in his book and documentary, but it would be nice to get some sort of concrete answer from him or someone within the administration.

I was also going to ask if Obama is ok with an Israel nuked into oblivion, but I’m afraid of the answer I might get.

In an Iran-Israel conflict, the best I’d expect from Øbama is U.S. neutrality. And that would be before the election. After the election, who knows?

Iran accused Germany’s Siemens on Saturday of implanting tiny explosives inside equipment the Islamic Republic purchased for its disputed nuclear program, a charge the technology giant denied.

Prominent lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Iranian security experts discovered the explosives and removed them before detonation, adding that authorities believe the booby-trapped equipment was sold to derail uranium enrichment efforts.

“The equipment was supposed to explode after being put to work, in order to dismantle all our systems,” he said. “But the wisdom of our experts thwarted the enemy conspiracy.”

Siemens denied the charge and said its nuclear division has had no business with Iran since the 1979 revolution that led to its current clerical state.

“Siemens rejects the allegations and stresses that we have no business ties to the Iranian nuclear program,” spokesman for the Munich-based company Alexander Machowetz said.

The American Jewish Committee released a new poll of Jewish voters in Florida that possibly holds good news for Mitt Romney. According to the AJC, 69 percent of Florida’s Jewish voters say they will vote for Barack Obama, 25 percent will vote for Mitt Romney, and 5 percent remain undecided — yes, this is good news.

In Florida, Jews account for 8 percent of likely voters, and are a key swing constituency. In 2008, Obama won 76 percent of the Jewish vote and took the state. Based on some quick, back-of-the-envelope calculations, if the 2008 election were repeated with this change in the Jewish vote, Barack Obama’s margin of victory over John McCain would be halved from over 200,000 votes to around 100,000 votes. Florida is perennially a close election; that kind of shift in the Jewish vote could help deliver the state to Mitt Romney.

This has always been who Obama is. It’s the media’s fault for not showing his core beliefs. He does not like America. It’s that simple. Look at the people he associated with.

The coming world war, which Barry — good KGB flack that he was groomed from birth to become — is doing everything to ensure happens, is the means by which his promised “fundamental transformation of America” is going to be engineered.

The Saudis? We do a lot of business with the Saudis, but they’ve hardly been the kind of ally Israel has been — ….

We do a lot of business with the Saudis and have mutual interests. Beyond that, it would be a stretch to call them allies.

AZfederalist on September 24, 2012 at 9:22 AM

We’ve got an Iranian regime that has said horrible things that directly threaten Israel’s existence… and I am going to block out—any noise that’s out there.

Interesting. Only Obama could make two statements like that in the same paragraph and it would mean the exact opposite of what it would mean if anyone else on the planet put those two statements in the same paragraph. And the sequence of the statements within the same paragraph wouldn’t matter for anyone else, it would mean the same thing regardless, but the sequence somehow matters when Obama says it.

It would be very interesting to learn how Obama’s collegiate education was funded.

Fallon on September 24, 2012 at 9:14 AM

Obama refuses to release any documents from his past.

His college records would reveal a lot of information that would very likely contradict the myth of the Chicago Jesus.

Does Obama actually want Iran to have nukes?

Doughboy on September 24, 2012 at 8:56 AM

I seem to recall that Obama said (early in his term) that Iran has the right to develop nukes. Then he “corrected” that to mean the right to develop nuclear power.

The Rogue Tomato on September 24, 2012 at 9:23 AM

I wish that were so, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that a majority of his supporters are borderline ruh-tards. Someone linked in the QOTD thread last night to a YouTube video of Sal and Richard from the Howard Stern Show interviewing Obama voters in Harlem just like they did back in 2008 and the results were even scarier than 4 years ago. They didn’t even know bin Laden was dead!

Doughboy on September 24, 2012 at 9:17 AM

Sure 90% of his voters from 2008 are going to still vote for him in 2012, no one is debating this… However the simple math is that if only 7% of his 2008 voters switch to Romney or stay him that he is certain to lose the elections. In mutliple battleground states it even takes less than 7% of his 2008 voters to switch for Romney or to stay home and Obama would lose these states…

Now forget the biased polls and look around you, do you think that at least 7% of his voters from 2008 are either voting for Romney or staying home? I think this is happening everywhere…

The electoral math and reality on the ground are still very much against Obama…

mnjg on September 24, 2012 at 9:24 AM

If Israel starts any assault on Iran, (before our election), the price of gas will soar to around $6.00 a gallon, basically ending any chance for Obama to win his re-election bid. Believe me, this is the noise Obama is “tuning out”. National security has to take a back seat to making sure he gets another four years. Try chewing on that for a bit.

Who took out the secret nuclear processing site in Syria? Who enable Suxnet? Who does Obama call on when they want the job done? And I don’t think the Saudis are all that excited about a nuclear Iran.

Agreed. I’ve been pointing out for months that the state polls seem to be showing Obama losing on average around 8 points. He’ll have a hard time winning reelection under those circumstances(unless he manages to hold onto Virginia). And it could end up being worse than 8 points. There was a poll last week that showed Romney up 21 in Georgia. Granted it’s only one poll, but keep in mind that McCain won that state by a mere 5 points in 2008.
