Carney: Attacks on Obama’s “bumps” comments are “desperate and offensive”

posted at 4:01 pm on September 24, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

As Ed already recounted, President Obama’s 60 Minutes interview that aired last night is causing a wee bit of headache for the White House — his comments about four American deaths in Libya being a “bump in the road” and about Israel’s concerns over Iran being just “noise,” as you might imagine, haven’t been playing over too well. The Romney campaign quickly seized on the remarks as insensitive and inappropriate, via WaPo:

“His indication that developments in the Middle East represent bumps in the road is a very different view than I have,” the Republican candidate told ABC News. “I can’t imagine saying something like the assassination of ambassadors is a bump in the road.”

Romney gave a similar comment to NBC News. “There are extraordinary events going on in the Middle East and considering those events, either one of them or all of them collectively, as bumps in the road shows a person who has a very different perspective about world affairs [than] the perspective I have,” he said.

Shortly after the interviews, while speaking to a crowd in Pueblo, Colo., Romney declared, “These are not bumps in the road, these are human lives.”

But during the White House briefing today, Press Secretary Jay Carney went on the offensive rather than try to walk the President’s comments back, via MRCTV:

The president was referring to the transformations in the region. There is a certain rather desperate attempt to grasp at words and phrases here to find political advantage. And in this case, that’s profoundly offensive.

Of course people are going to grasp at phrases to find a political advantage — we’re in the middle of a neck-and-neck presidential election cycle, and besides, I’m sure Team Obama wouldn’t know anything about grasping at their opponents’ words to try and garner political advantage, would they? But words are also powerful things, and if I were on the president’s PR team, I would really recommend that he look for a different description for violence in the Middle East; not only does it make these things sound more trivial, but I can’t help thinking that what he really means is that these “bumps” are roughening the road toward his reelection more than any other ostensible goal.

There’s an old saying, the gist of which is, that most people have ‘skeletons’ in their closets. Essentially some embarrassing act or omission which they’d like very much to keep from the public.

When Obama opens his mouth and makes one of these omissions about how he really view certain people, events, or issues, its tantamount to a great big old bone falling out of his personal closet and landing, *THUD* , right there in the middle of the table for all the assembled company to behold.

When this happens, Carney, or some other of Obama’s advisers or lackey’s, scurries forth, drops a napkin over the offending bone, and tries to drag it off the table and then struggles to force it back into the closet with the other various bones and skeletons threatening to spill out of the closet.

The real problem for Obama, Carney, and the other assorted lackey’s, is that the assembled company has already seen the big old bone fall out and land on the center of the table. *THUD*

thatsafactjack on September 24, 2012 at 4:14 PM

But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because– you know, in a lot of these places– the one organizing principle– has been Islam. The one part of society that hasn’t been controlled completely by the government.

Repeating from another thread…

I find the bold part just as shocking as considering our ambassador and three other Americans “bumps in the road.” Obama sees Islam as the saving grace of the Middle East. He sees it as freedom from government.

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

Fallon on September 24, 2012 at 4:14 PM

Wait…criticism of the dumb remark is offensive? Really, Jay Carney? Because, to me, declaring the deaths of Americans to be mere bumps in the road is the offensive part.

SailorMark on September 24, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Maybe it’s a stretch (except that it’s difficult to overdo it when talking about Obama’s opinion of himself), but I think his 60 Minutes comments are symptomatic of his unparalleled hubris.

He has an unavoidable compulsion to appear in control of anything and everything around him.

“We’re good; I got it,” is his answer to anything. It has to be for his self-delusion to remain intact.

A terrorist attack on 9/11? A disastrous blow to our intelligence infrastructure in the Middle East? An Ambassador killed on his watch? A news network doing the sweep job the FBI is supposedly tasked with (except the FBI is not they’re yet)? Israel and Iran on the threshold of lobbing bombs at each other?

His choice of “bumps in the road” phraseology is not offhanded, in my opinion. It’s typical and reflects the same uber-me opinion he’s had since he appeared on the national scene. This is the same Obama who claimed to know more about any subject than any of his advisers could possibly know, before he was elected.

It does not appear that his opinion has changed.

Barack Obama, like other Presidents, should be studied for years to come. But, unlike other Presidents, he should be studied in classes on Abnormal Psychology.

For me, it’s not the words, it’s how he says the words. I felt the same sense of his disdain for America when he said “You didn’t build that”. It was said in such a hateful way just as he sounded so insensitive to say that these assassinations on 9/11 were “bumps in the road”. It all ties in with the lie about the attacks being preplanned, the convenient lack of security and the lie the Administration and State Department came up with as the motive.

Makes sense. I think Obama believes his own BS. And with a sycophantic press still treating him like a messiah who can do no wrong, you can hardly blame the dude. Any other President, I don’t care what their party affiliation, would’ve been lucky to remain in office this long had they compiled a similar record in 3 1/2 years. But Obama thanks to his skin color and a compliant media remains relatively unscathed according to the polls. So yes, the assassination of a US ambassador thanks to lax security is nothing more than a bump in the road in his estimation.

Wait, wait?

Don’t “transformations” almost always connote something positive, while “bumps in the road” almost always connote something negative? So how could Obama be using a negative expression to convey a positive expression?

I thought Obama was the emperor with no clothes. Now, he’s Humpty Dumpty?

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

They assured us unequivocally that it was all the fault of one man’s laughably inane video – and one of the unalienable human rights protected by the Constitution.

And, from positions of great safety, they even had the man paraded on TV being hauled off by brown-shirted police hoping no doubt the Islamic world would see that the USA was bowing to their murderous rage.

This administration has demonstrated not only hubris and smarmy cowardice, but unprecedented disdain for our human rights and the Constitution they all are supposed to protect.

Give it up on this “gaffe”. (not that the one misspeaks)
“You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em,
Know when to walk away, know when to run.”

Count your blessings Obie can’t be president for life.

Don’t be so sure, we’re only voters for life.

Shameless Barry blowing media continues to lie for him, when that 500 seat arena wasn’t even filled to capacity.

Having been through “You didn’t build that” and “cling bitterly” –
I’m aware of the futility of asking that folks debate/argue based on something that was actually said.

Put another way, you refuse to accept facts and instead continue to spin and claim that the words ObamaIdiot said were not the words he said.

It must suck to have to do nothing but lie constantly in an effort to help your side? Doesn’t your constant lying ever bother you?

Obama clearly said what he said. You can argue that he “meant” something different than our interpretation, not that he “said” something different. so, stop lying and try to use your limited intellectual capacity to explain why it’s o.k. for Obama to call the events in the middle east of the last 2 months “bumps in the road”?

Your interpretation of his remarks is silly at best and offensive at worst. Like the remarks themselves. Please try harder at your lying gig.

Monkeytoe on September 24, 2012 at 4:46 PM

Let’s see if this Obama statement would cut it with any other president:

“The 241 murdered Americans in the 1983 Beirut bombings are just a bump in the road in foreign relations.”

-Ronald Reagan

“9/11 attacks and the murder of over 2400 US citizens are just a bump in the road.”

-George W Bush

“December 7, 1941. A day that is a bump in the road of our foreign diplomacy”

-Franklin Roosevelt

Obama sees no difference between American blood spilled, an any other nations. He sees the United States as not better, but equal/inferior to other nations. Seeing Americans killed does not make his blood level rise, because he personally sees it just another person in the grand scheme of things. We have a Globalist as President. We need an American as President.

Romney slams Obama over 60 min. comments

“Mitt Romney launched an aggressive new attack on President Obama’s comments Sunday in an interview with “60 Minutes,” during which Obama described recent events in the Middle East as “bumps in the road.”

“These are not bumps in the road, these are human lives,” Romney told a crowd in Pueblo, Colo. “These are developments we don’t want to see.”

I’m finding the administration’s lies and projection, and also its devaluation and dismissal of American lives to be both desperate and offensive.
