Pelosi: We were given an economy in the “depths of hell”

posted at 5:31 pm on September 22, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Well, gee whiz — in a press conference earlier this week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi yet again brought out the over-the-top dramatics the blame all of President Obama’s ‘inherited’ economic problems on ‘the previous administration.’ This level of political pageantry is right up there with the ‘Republicans hate clean air and clean water’ she likes to trot out at every available opportunity:

Four years ago on September 18 – read it, I won’t go into all the details, except to bottom-line it — we had a meeting in the Speaker’s office in the Capitol — bipartisan, bicameral — at which the secretary of the Treasury described a situation of our economy and our financial institutions that was so dire.  He took us to the depths of Hell, a place so low that even Dante couldn’t find it — make a circle down there, it was so low. …Four years ago and two days ago the chairman of the Fed said if we don’t act immediately we will not have an economy — after hearing the description and knowing the crisis we were in as a result of the policies of the Bush administration. So for them [Republicans] to have the unmitigated gall to ask the question, ‘Are your better off now than you were four years ago?’ when they had taken us to the brink of a great depression, a meltdown of our financial institutions, deep indebtedness, deepening the national debt to the point that if we didn’t act immediately we wouldn’t have an economy — an economy by Monday. I mean, this election is urgent, because what are they advocating?  Going back to the same tax breaks for the rich that got us here in the first place.

So, nothing too out of the ordinary for her, but I need to take a beat and reflect on this because, once again, I find myself absolutely flabbergasted about the Democrats’ strategery in this race. This is it, guys — this is all they have to go on, and it is nothing short of pathetic. Blame Bush; Republican obstructionism; and tax breaks for millionaires. Translation? Not our fault; nothing we could do about it; low-rent populism.

The Democrats had two full years in which they had all the sweet time in the world to do whatever they wanted, during which they chose to pass massive behemoths of unpopular healthcare legislation and financial regulation and stimuli, and President Obama promised we’d see unemployment fall below eight percent.

Yet, lo and behold, here we are: Stagnant. Weaksauce economic growth, increased welfare-program participation, and joblessness have been the hallmarks of this administration’s policies, and the fact that the Democrats have so few of their own positives to tout and instead have to resort to all this mind-bogglingly stupid scapegoatism should be very, very telling.

I mean, come on — ‘tax breaks for the rich that got us here in the first place’? As if low taxes are a bad thing, because low taxes can’t pay for all the government the Democrats want? Sorry, but I’ll take less government, not higher taxes, thanks.

It’s a shame imbeciles like this get to be millionaires, much less high government officials. An economy in the depths of hell? Then why did you bastards do more of the same that got us there?!

Pelosi admitted that AFTER being Speaker of the House for 2 years, she had no idea what was going on.

Why would anyone think she knows what is going on today?

The people that actually vote for Pelosi do in fact want to destroy this country. Pelosi is their usefull idiot.

Of course Dems, specifically Nanzy Piehole, held the pursestrings of Congress and depleted the US Treasury since the powergrab of 2006. Nah, Nan, not Booosh’s fault. But state Bacon, yeah, real good for the country, right?

This is like when Pelosi tried “speaking” to Catholic Bishops about “the Word” and all that she managed to accomplish was providing more proof of how craven and decrepit she really is, spirit, mind and obvioiusly, body what with all her needs to surgically alter it.

If anyone needs proof of people who are possessed by evil, I think Nancy Pelosi provides that.

Don’t forget that the Democrats had both houses of Congress in January of 2007. A full year and 9 months before the financial crisis. With both houses of Congress in their power, why didn’t they stop the financial collapse?

You know why? Because they caused it.

No sweetheart. The economy you messed up was in pretty good shape when you Libs, took over the House and the Senate the last 2 full years of the Bush term and then kept it a full 2 years under Obama whereby you had the house, senate and the president and apparently the SCOTUS as well. You piglosi, have no one to blame but you and Harry. You guys drove it down. Facts are a terrible thing, but hard to argue the facts.

If I am not mistaken the House and Senate were controlled by the Democrats. Now we keep hearing that nothing is getting done because the Republicans in the House stop it all and from the same mouth are told that with Democrats in control of both houses Bush still managed to wreck the economy and the country. Amazing. And this women actually believes this or she is the most pathological lair in history.

You know why? Because they caused it.
ButterflyDragon on September 22, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Come on now, be fair and objective. They did not have a super majority and the Republican party performed more filibusters in that session than had be used in the entire history of our country up to 1980, literally, 204 years, with the President also issuing and unprecedented amount of vetoes to most anything else that did go through.

In all 8 years of GWB there was not a single instance or effort at shoring up our books, paying down our debts, and attempting to move back in to positive territory, only a depletion of surplus’s, supplemental budgets to pay for wars to keep them off the books, and tax cuts(i.e. revenue cuts). At the end it was so bad that even the republican party backed a huge stimulus plan because if we didn’t start pumping money into the economy to fill what were the ever widening holes in it, that we were essentially going to lose the country as we know it.

Yeah, Barack Obama has continued that and we have racked up a massive debt attempting to keep the economy afloat when the repercussions otherwise would have been of a magnitude I don’t think most people can really imagine or comprehend. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

History will absolve those who deserve it of perceived mistakes. It’s already made GW look better on a number of other fronts. But the constant pretending that the very people that many here attempt to rally to put back into power are absolutely innocent and that it’s all just those evil democrats is disingenuous, as always, at best and complete ignorance to the things that have actually taken place before Barack Obama was elected at worst.

But alas, many were still politically asleep before then or had their partisan blinders on, as followers of both parties are ALWAYS wont to do. It’s easy to see the flaws in your opponents. But it takes a much more brave, honest, and secure person to give credit to the same flaws in your own “team”.

You have a “conveniently deficient” memory, as well as poor economic skills!!!

Bush made multiple attempts to reform Social Security and stop the damage being done to the housing market by Dodd and Frank, who were directly threatening banks, promising punishments if they did not make loans to people who could never pay them back. All of these efforts were killed off by DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS!!!

And the “Bush Tax Cuts” resulted in huge INCREASES in Federal revenue…NOT decreases!!! Your stubborn, misguided, and proven false Keynesian assumptions that taxpayers just stand there waiting to be sheared regardless of how high rates are set blinds you to the truth about how economies work. What leftist partisans insist on calling “tax cuts” are really “RATE REDUCTIONS.” The real-world effect of “rate reductions” is to reduce punishment associated with employment and success: thus stimulating the economy, increasing the number of available jobs, and increasing tax revenue: a result which cannot be predicted by a Keynesian “static analysis.” This effect has been proven time and again since the Kennedy administration.

The deficits have been caused by OVER-SPENDING!!! No matter how fast federal revenue increases, it seems that Congress and/or various administrations have an unlimited ability to spend it all…and then some!!

Attempts to make economics based on “static analysis” models ALWAYS results in fewer jobs and higher deficits as people will naturally work to protect their assets from government theft. Here is a recent study which shows the contrasting effects of the two approaches.

This is selective memory from stretch Pelosi. If I remember right she and the demos had control of the house and senate from 2006, this seems to be the start of the big melt down. So let me get this straight, when they have control of both houses its Bushes fault because he writes the bills and passes them and when they have control of all three branches it’s the Repub’s fault because they are not compromising with them, got it.
This thing is an embarrassment to the Country but what so you expect from San Francisco.

2eagles on September 23, 2012 at 8:50 AM

As I recall the economy was not in bad shape until Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House and the Democrats took control of congress. She like all Democrats have a problem with the truth. I will not credit the Republicans with doing a great job just prior to the Democrat take over, but Pelosi cannot get away with her not taking the brunt of the blame for this mess. This woman is a certifiable nut case.

savage24 on September 23, 2012 at 10:31 AM

I’m curious… At the end of 2009 and into the beginning of 2010, it seemed the recession was over (GDP growth of 1.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.8) and then it started falling in the second half of 2010 and has been pretty pathetic quarter to quarter since. Exactly how is that Bush’s fault? Sure, stick him with 2008 and most of 2009… But when recovery started, something bogged it back down again and has kept it in the mire. Bush was long gone by the time it got into the mire after recovery had started.

irishlad317 on September 23, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Funny how the Law shows us that the economy is the purview of Congress. They craft the Budget, they determine allocations and distributions. Didn’t San Fran Nan serve on Ways and Means while this mess was all heating up?

Oh, Bush can be blamed. He can be blamed for not Vetoing each and every damaging Democrat budget sent his way, ala Reagan.

But for those Democrats who did that, to blame Bush for THEIR budgets, is greater unmitigated gall than should be imaginable in polite society.

And all of that is leaving aside what Erika detailed in this post.

When they tried to blame the Carter malaise on Nixon/Ford, they forgot that there was a Democrat congress submitting the budgets. When they hung “Read my lips” like a millstone around Bush 41′s neck, they forgot that it was a Democrat congress which bullied and badgered that tax increase into place over the (all too weak) objections of the President. Now, after CRA’s chickens have come home to roast, they blame the President who tried to slow down that speeding train, blamed him for overspending, then buried the throttle once he was out of the way, while continuing to say it was all his fault.

Scum.
