Pelosi: We were given an economy in the “depths of hell”

posted at 5:31 pm on September 22, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Well, gee whiz — in a press conference earlier this week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi yet again brought out the over-the-top dramatics the blame all of President Obama’s ‘inherited’ economic problems on ‘the previous administration.’ This level of political pageantry is right up there with the ‘Republicans hate clean air and clean water’ she likes to trot out at every available opportunity:

Four years ago on September 18 – read it, I won’t go into all the details, except to bottom-line it — we had a meeting in the Speaker’s office in the Capitol — bipartisan, bicameral — at which the secretary of the Treasury described a situation of our economy and our financial institutions that was so dire.  He took us to the depths of Hell, a place so low that even Dante couldn’t find it — make a circle down there, it was so low. …Four years ago and two days ago the chairman of the Fed said if we don’t act immediately we will not have an economy — after hearing the description and knowing the crisis we were in as a result of the policies of the Bush administration. So for them [Republicans] to have the unmitigated gall to ask the question, ‘Are your better off now than you were four years ago?’ when they had taken us to the brink of a great depression, a meltdown of our financial institutions, deep indebtedness, deepening the national debt to the point that if we didn’t act immediately we wouldn’t have an economy — an economy by Monday. I mean, this election is urgent, because what are they advocating?  Going back to the same tax breaks for the rich that got us here in the first place.

So, nothing too out of the ordinary for her, but I need to take a beat and reflect on this because, once again, I find myself absolutely flabbergasted about the Democrats’ strategery in this race. This is it, guys — this is all they have to go on, and it is nothing short of pathetic. Blame Bush; Republican obstructionism; and tax breaks for millionaires. Translation? Not our fault; nothing we could do about it; low-rent populism.

The Democrats had two full years in which they had all the sweet time in the world to do whatever they wanted, during which they chose to pass massive behemoths of unpopular healthcare legislation and financial regulation and stimuli, and President Obama promised we’d see unemployment fall below eight percent.

Yet, lo and behold, here we are: Stagnant. Weaksauce economic growth, increased welfare-program participation, and joblessness have been the hallmarks of this administration’s policies, and the fact that the Democrats have so few of their own positives to tout and instead have to resort to all this mind-bogglingly stupid scapegoatism should be very, very telling.

I mean, come on — ‘tax breaks for the rich that got us here in the first place’? As if low taxes are a bad thing, because low taxes can’t pay for all the government the Democrats want? Sorry, but I’ll take less government, not higher taxes, thanks.

Given an economy in the depths of hell… and kept it there.

Seriously… we’re in a recovery in the sense that GDP isn’t continuing to fall. That’s it. It’s practically flatlining.

But they want credit for that. That’s something that would have normally, followed by an increase if government had done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Yes, friends, what they did was worse than doing nothing at all. And they want another four years to continue doing what they did.

Yet, nonetheless, the WH’s own economists stated in January 2009 that even if their wondrous stimulus package were NOT passed, that unemployment would dip below 8%. In fact based on the Romer and Bernstein estimates, unemployment would be at 6% in the fall of 2012.

Putting aside the issue of the poor predictions, it shows that the WH and Democrat mindset early in 2009 was that the economy was recovering even w/out massive government intervention. Of course they wanted it to recover faster and so they “goosed” it a bit with a massive stimulus package.

Several economist now argue persuasively that the actions of the government with the stimulus, ObamaCare, and increased regulations, is the prime cause of the tepid recovery.

The four horsemen?

OTTO on September 22, 2012 at 5:50 PM

Barack Obama was sworn in as president on January 20, 2009. In the week that ended on January 19, 2009, the weekly retail gasoline price in the U.S. was $1.90/gallon. Most people don’t remember that given the recent history of high gasoline prices, but I will get to that.
In May 2011 retail gasoline prices averaged above $4/gallon for three straight weeks. The most recent retail price — for the week ending September 10, 2012 — was $3.91/gallon. So prices are more than double what they were when Obama was sworn in

Wade on September 22, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Here’s the point.

Anyone who has played Texas Hold’em Poker knows any idiot can win with four aces, but it takes a great player to win with a pair of two’s.

Mitt Romney has made a fortune winning with a pair of two’s or worse. He took the failing and forsaken companies no one else wanted, saw their potential, made key changes and today more than 80% of them are successful going concerns and household names employing 10′s of thousands.

mitchellvii on September 22, 2012 at 5:53 PM

Let’s not forget that Pelosi herself took control of the purse strings in January 2007, and Harry Reid took over as Majority Leader of the Senate. I think the deficit Pelosi inherited in 2007 was something like 150 billion.

TarheelBen on September 22, 2012 at 5:58 PM

Sounds like she’s advocating for the creation of a viable 3rd Party…….”The GOP screwed it up, we couldn’t fix it, time to give someone else a try”.

Sorry Stretch, we have a 2 party system, and yeah, a LOT of Americans think both parties stink up the room. But if you honestly expect people to hold an extended grudge against one of those 2 parties, because they stunk up the room a little bit more (not true, actually), then how do you explain the GOP’s juggenaut victories in 2010? Oh yeah, I kinda do remember what you said at the time. You blamed the Democrat’s historic losses on the high unemployment rate. Better get ready to dust that one off again soon.

Going back to the same tax breaks for the rich that got us here in the first place.

To “go back” to the tax breaks, Nancy, means we would have to have left them.

Does this idiot even know that the tax breaks for EVERYONE were extended? Does this dumb broad even know that Obama called for that extension? Does this horse’s ass even know that those tax breaks for EVERYONE were the only thing that didn’t change over all this time?

If we have been stopped from going over the cliff thus far, it is because the tax cuts were extended. Think about it. Things only started improving when they were extended.

If there is any good news this year it is because there is a chance Obama will lose and the conservatives will have control of both chambers of Congress.

If Obama wins another term all that changes.

No, Nanzi dear, you and your pals created the conditions that put the economy in those depths. Your bunch was responsible for the CRA. Your bunch held your ears and screamed with your willing accomplices in the media when you were warned about the viability of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. You smiled and approved when Bill Clinton’s justice department threatened banks unless they would provide home loans to people who stood no chance of paying them back. Because of your policies, the mortgage backed security market was created in order to at least partially shield those institutions from the coming destruction when those mortgages they were forced to make defaulted. You, Nanzi were part of the gaggle of bubble-headed smiling liberals happily pushing the car over the cliff and now you are crying because your policies have led to an untenable situation for you and the pResident you brought to the party.

there is no surprise here. totally predictable. In fact this was obvious years ago.

the Left has demonized Hoover for 80 years. Maybe it has faded somewhat now, but in the 60s thru the 80s Hoover was evil incarnate, who wrecked the economy and the Only reason we survived was FDR.

Even very recently i read an interview of a senior from the NE somewhere saying they’d always vote D because of FDR…that his father had a business..and got some relief from FDR…always a D

Bush was the target of a campaign to de-legitimate the R party once and for all. I knew years ago that the Left would always demonize Bush…the only thing i was unsure of was which Hoover would it be…J Edgar…or President Hoover.

the left is all about hatred…and make no mistake about it. FDR was not uniformly loved…there was opposition, just like with barry. The left made FDR into an icon…and they will joyfully do it again for barry

Ummmm…no.

The country elected Obama and all the other Democrats like Reid and Pelosi–liberals who made a bad situation worse.

Liam on September 22, 2012 at 6:21 PM

The Democrats weren’t ‘given’ anything.

The Democrats in congress had been working toward the economic collapse with both hands since 2006 AT LEAST. Much longer, really, since a great deal of that subprime lending that led up to the real estate bubble and melt down was caused through their regulatory adventurism and social engineering through legislation and regulation.

Obama campaigned to be elected, pleaded to be given the job, and so, when he got it, can scarcely claim that the state of the economy was somehow foisted off on him, or even ‘given’ to him.

Democrats helped create the economy from hell, and they begged for the chance to preside over it.

They got their wish. They failed to address the problems while they had ample opportunity, and now they’re crying foul.

thatsafactjack on September 22, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Ill tell you what….even if i agreed with the Democrats on some or most issues, i could never be part of that party. Between Pelosi’s embarrassing behavior and moronic dishonesty, and Harry Reid’s outright classlessness and hypocrisy, i would feel like a inane jackass by association.

Its one thing to politicize issues, its another to do it with bold faced lies and the ugliest of political hackery.

Neither one of them are serious people. They lead the country into the economic debacle with 4 years of Congressional irresponsibility, 2 of which they had Obama in the White House rubber stamping their failure of an agenda.

I know im preaching to the choir but it enrages me and i have to vent.

Classic liberal “Who? Me?” defense.

American liberals are so bad that, even if they profess and espouse Marx, they can’t get him right.

Really, when you think about Marx, his theory was that the workers would rise up against the oppressors (the rich) and force change.

Rich liberals like Pelosi are a different breed. They seek to ‘enact’ the tenets of the Manifesto. But, if you go purely by Marx/Engels, they’re the last ones qualified to do it. Largely, I think, is because their egos are in the way.

Rich liberals like Pelosi may invoke the ideas of Marx, if that’s their aim. But, like how they pervert the Bible for their own uses, so are their heads also perverted to the likes of Marx.

The concept of Marxism is to remove personal ego. Liblets like Pelosi and Reid are full of themselves.

If they believe in the theories of Marx, they are failures at that, too.

All anyone with half a brain has to do is go back to the beginning of 2007 and notice the steady decline from that point.

2007 was the year that DemocRATS took full control of the Congress and Senate, Bush was a lame duck Prez. from then on.

CONGRESS spends the money not the PREZ. but then they are speaking to their slaves and they believe whatever their masters tell them.

Their spending, their rules and all the crap they could push through but I still fault Bush for signing ANY of these destructive bills. He should have worn out his veto pen.

It is really a shame that their voters, particularly the minorities, don’t realize that the Democratic party started their destruction and dependency in the 60′s and destroyed the family unit. Pathetic creatures these Dems.

Six trillion dollars later, that’s the one that causes my jaw to drop. She has some nerve calling out someone else’s “unmitigated gall”…

bobcalco on September 22, 2012 at 6:57 PM

You’ll have to pardon Nancy-poo. Reality isn’t her strong point. NO ONE from the Bush administration warned about problems at Fannie Mae. Maxie Waters thought “Franklin Raines is doing an outstanding job!” Barney Frank wanted “to roll the dice one more time”, later admitting “I was blinded by IDEOLOGY!”

During one Bush State of the Union address, he lamented that Congress had yet to address the looming sort fall in Social Security. Splash Kennedy took the occasion to have his parties members stand up and cheer.

Nancy-poo has a short memory. EVERY problem is because of Republicans.

Wicked effing witch!!!!

Then in response to this grave threat, what did the Pelosi/Reid and the democratic party do? Passed the Obama Stimulus Palooza “emergency” spending program on “shovel-ready” projects that turned out to be nothing more than over $800B in payback for big donors that took three years to spend.

Just think what would have happened if it wouldn’t have been a “grave” threat. Maybe they would they have passed a budget. Not.

She “was given” a horrible economy?

Is she kidding?

Nancy Pelosi has been in congress for what . . . 80 or 90 years now? She signed on to every idiotic piece of legislation that led to the 2008 melt-down, just like she signed on to all those bloated budgets.

She wasn’t “given” a damn thing.

She did build that.

Obviously not the deepest depths of hell.

Pelosi: We were given an economy in the “depths of hell”

Says the woman who had the most to do with driving it there in the first place.

So what Miss Pelosi. When you and your party along with Obama got it you kept on digging deeper and deeper to the point of no return.

If you’d like to discuss this with her, say, over lunch:

Democrats Offer Lunch With Gore and Pelosi As Prize for Donations

Nancy Pelosi is like the arsonist who torches her own house, and then b*tches about how tough it is being homeless, or the kid who murders both her parents and then whines about the hardship of being an orphan.

AZCoyote on September 22, 2012 at 7:21 PM

My concept of the ‘depths of Hell’: Being married to Nazi Pelosi.

If she was a blood relative, I would beg for a transfusion.

Good call!

Their spending, their rules and all the crap they could push through but I still fault Bush for signing ANY of these destructive bills. He should have worn out his veto pen.

I understand your thinking here but I have to remind you that the vile Democrats were not above holding our soldiers in the field of battle hostage in order to push through their BS agenda.

In fact, after “Mission Accomplished” during the 2004 election the A-hole libs abandoned ALL pretense of support for our troops and the WOT.

Bush is a man of honor and character and would rather be excoriated by his party’s base than let our men and women in uniform twist in the wind at the hands of the Dems.

I remember it well and the hate I feel for them has roots that go back before they took over congress and the WH.

Jvette on September 22, 2012 at 7:25 PM

Wait, I thought Barack Obama’s sorcery saved the economy two months after he took office?

And then he proudly boated that he “owned the economy?”

We aren’t going back to any tax breaks for the rich, they never left us. Come up with another story Stretch.

Lyrics for Nazi Pelosi, from a different song:

“Don’t you blame me
For this nothing I’ve become!
It’s nothing that I’ve done;
Never meant to show you my mistakes.”
