CS Monitor: Say, this admission on Benghazi terrorist attack might cause Obama a few problems

posted at 10:01 am on September 22, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Ya think?

After a week of hesitation, the White House now says it is “self-evident” that a “terrorist attack,” and not just a spontaneous reaction from a furious mob, struck the US Consulate in Benghazi,Libya, last week.

Actually, it wasn’t “hesitation.”  The White House insisted that the attack on the consulate in Benghazi was a protest that “spun out of control” — and sent UN Ambassador Susan Rice onto a number of Sunday talk shows last weekend to insist on it.  They rolled out a false story even while the Libyan President said there was “no doubt” that the attack was premeditated and well organized.

Why did the Obama administration stick with the false story until it fell apart?  The Christian Science Monitor answers that question in the following paragraphs:

The characterization is important, because it opens the door to the conclusion that the attack was a preplanned assault, resulting in the deaths of four US diplomats, including the US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens.

The repercussions of declaring that the Benghazi attack was a planned terrorist assault on the United States would be extensive. For starters, it would raise questions about the Obama administration’s precautions in a volatile region and its preparedness for anti-US strikes in an area known to harbor Al Qaeda and other Islamist extremist elements.

Let’s recall the date of this attack.  It was the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a date which al-Qaeda has repeatedly attempted to exploit again in order to make itself feared.  Benghazi is in the eastern part of Libya, where AQ has operated for years, recruiting hundreds of low-level jihadis for the war in Iraq, and who have been able to operate even more openly after the fall of Moammar Qaddafi.  That prompts the question of why the Obama administration didn’t take any extra precautions for the Benghazi consulate, especially now that Libya claims to have warned the US a few days before the attack of the deteriorating security environment in Benghazi.

That’s not the only problem that arises with this new admission, either:

More broadly, it could call into question President Obama’s Middle East policy in the wake of the Arab awakening. Some Republican critics are already tarring the policy as too weak and dismissive of the threats that the region’s tumult presents.

Obama pushed Hosni Mubarak out of power in Egypt, and he bombed Qaddafi out of power in Libya.  At the time, Obama hailed the Arab Spring movements as harbingers of democracy and justified his intervention in Libya by claiming that the security of its inhabitants was threatened by Qaddafi (which it certainly was).  Have these interventions improved matters?  More to the point, have they improved US standing and security, and the standing and security of our allies?  Not at all; even Obama suggested that Egypt was no longer an ally of the US under its new leadership, causing NBC’s chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel to openly question why we got involved in the Arab Spring at all.

The cover story offered by the White House shows just how badly they miscalculated on the Arab Spring, and the inevitable seizure of power by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the rise of AQ in eastern Libya, two utterly predictable consequences of Obama’s interventions.  It also shows that the Obama administration, from the top down, understood just how bad this story was — and either lied to themselves, lied to us, or a bit of both in order to avoid the consequences of it.  That might be the most damaging revelation of all.

Mr. Mainstream Media,

Since it is not the Video that caused this debacle, please remind me again how it was Mitt Romney’s questioning of the embassy in Egypt’s communique that caused the incident in Libya.

Thanks in advance because I find these things get confusing as the storyline shifts from day to day.

KW64 on September 22, 2012 at 10:14 AM

Plus beware of unintentional consequences.

Such as Obama lying about the video tape being the cause of the consulate attack then caused of all the post 9/11 anniversary protests that started throughout the Middle East.

If Obama had never mentioned the video, it would have never been hyped by the world wide press.

Obama’s actions caused the post 9/11 anniversary Muslim riots and protests.

No, CSM, it was called lying, plain and simple. Hillary and Barry knew they were lying when they made their statements; Susan Rice knew she was lying and even went further by spinning a huge whopper on all major television networks for several days; Beltway Jay Carney knew he was lying to the press corpse and the nation. The nation called BS; the lapdog press corpse salivated, as usual.

What are we going to do in the future to combat terrorism to defend our nation and our citizens abroad?

Screw the MSM – they will protect this Empty Suit until Nov 7

People with real wealth had better step up quickly. The Romney-RNC advantage of $50 million is not sufficient to counter hundreds of millions of in-kind gifts to Obama from the MSM – as we experienced over the past 3 weeks.

Everyone who cares about this nation should be making a $10 or $50 or $1 million gift directly to Romney or to the Super Pacs or both.

The SuperPacs should be AWASH in money and on the air in many more Blue states to call Obama out and DRAIN HIM DRY – because he cannot keep up. That the Super Pacs have not done so is a bad sign. It’s now or never for all of us.

It’s simply a matter of how a man forms his approach to take charge. Many will sit down to a PC and expect the machine to do “what I’m thinking.” This is an amateurish and tyrannical expectation and is quite comparable with Obama & Co’s approach to control all things “out of alignment” with his vision. An applications programmer is trained and can make the machine emulate what he is thinking, but under the hood the application is well stocked with predetermined corrective (error controlling) measures to prevent epic failure. The programmer is not tyrannical, but is well trained in taking charge and having flawless execution. The difference in approach is training and execution versus capricious expectation.

The MSM offers systemic buoyancy for Obama’s capriciousness in exchange for, not simply progressive tolerance, but for its earnest advocacy. For progressive advocates, we have witnessed over the past 15, or so, years that honesty, dignity, and morality are not the tools which provide successful acceptance of emerging ideology, but rather the tools actually are the lesser informed and unwashed masses that they can muster into voting booths. A promise to their electorate is not required to be true; it only needs to describe what they are thinking. The failures of progressivism are explained and countered with indifference, attitude, and divisiveness but the approach remains capricious.

REPORTS: Marines Not Permitted Live Ammo **UPDATE**

U.S. Marines defending the American embassy in Egypt were not permitted by the State Department to carry live ammunition, limiting their ability to respond to attacks like those this week on the U.S. consulate in Cairo.

Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson “did not permit US Marine guards to carry live ammunition,” according to multiple reports on U.S. Marine Corps blog spotted by Nightwatch. “She neutralized any US military capability that was dedicated to preserve her life and protect the US Embassy.”

If true, the reports indicate that Patterson shirked her obligation to protect U.S. interests, Nightwatch states

**UPDATE**

Further Marine spokesman at Pentagon Lt Col Chris Hughes says these reports are NOT true. This is on the record:

“The Ambassador and RSO have been completely and appropriately engaged with the security situation. No restrictions on weapons or weapons status have been imposed. This information comes from the Det Commander at AMEMB Cairo.”

“Morsi is a prominent figure in the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, the most important of the world’s Islamist organizations and ideological progenitor of al Qaeda and nearly every jihadist terrorist group in the world. Its slogan reads, “Allah is our objective; the Quran is our law, the Prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; and death for the sake of Allah is the highest of our aspirations.”

Clinton’s welcoming of Morsi to his high-profile event in New York City is surprising and may undermine the tough-on-terror image the Democratic Party is trying to cultivate ahead of the November elections…”

I think we ~ ALL AMERICANS ~ should all pile on and DEMAND the White House EQUALLY condemn the display of the modern art masterpiece “PISS CHRIST” in New York as “reprehensible and disgusting” (the words they used for that piss poor movie).

I say stick it to the hypocritical ba$tards.

tree hugging sister on September 22, 2012 at 10:35 AM

The timing of that re-release is interesting, isn’t it? It’s almost as if the adminstration and the MSM (but I repeat myself) are throwing this in our faces, showing us that we must show more respect for some religions than others.

Be interesting to see what the lib spin on this will be. If it even makes the news.

/yeah, I’m holding my breath waiting for that White House denouncement

Clinton’s welcoming of Morsi to his high-profile event in New York City is surprising and may undermine the tough-on-terror image the Democratic Party is trying to cultivate ahead of the November elections…”

the b*stards are throwing the brotherhood right in our faces! God help Israel and us..sob Mosni never even apologized for the breach of our embassy. i hate these stinkin’ people.

I’m telling ya, don’t f**k with Hilary. She will put you in the ground! Choom had no idea what was going on (as usual).

Hillary’s statement on 9-11

I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission in Benghazi today. As we work to secure our personnel and facilities, we have confirmed that one of our State Department officers was killed. ….

Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.

Hillary covered up the fact that it was the Ambassador that was attacked and killed. Then she deflected blame to the film.

At the time, Obama hailed the Arab Spring movements as harbingers of democracy and justified his illegal intervention in Libya by claiming that the security of its inhabitants was threatened by Qaddafi (which it certainly was).

A slight, but important correction.

Oh my. Time for the Mitt ad machine to make a TV commercial. Obama meeting with terrorist sympathizers. Clinton hosting terrorist sympathizers at a swanky event. Not going to resonate with the folks.

Philly on September 22, 2012 at 11:34 AM

Yeah but at least it wasn’t an IED. I’m really confused and have emailed Ed about clarification on the two former SEALS who died. I am hearing conflicting reports on whether they were part of Amb. Stevens team or just came to his aid. The Obama administration has handled this stupidly.

I understand your sentiments, but I don’t want to see the White House, or any other arm of our government, denouncing free speech — no matter how disgusting it is. I want to see them defending Americans’ right to speak — even when that speech is highly offensive to some listeners.

The United States has a long history of appeasement and willful blindness toward the nature of our enemies, almost invariably led by peace-in-our-time/peace-at-any-price progressives. As far back as the 1920s and especially in the ’30s, the intelligensia thought Stalin was the best thing since sliced bread. Also, they initially supported Hitler and his ‘miracle’ of restoring Germany.

During WWII, there were a lot of Soviet spies in this country–people who truly believed protecting the interests of Moscow was the surest way to keep world peace.

All through the Cold War, there were plenty of progressives who still believed that, including a late and not so great senator from MA who wrote the Russians seeking their help to get Reagan voted out. Also, in Grenada, our Marines found a letter signed by many Dem Congresspeople addressed to Castro telling of their support for him.

During those decades, these progressives never appreciated the dangers posed by those America opposed.

From Clinton all the way through to today, the same blindness continues among the political left. Islam simply happens to be their cause at the moment. But if Russia were to revert again to Communism or Hitler were to rise today instead of having done so 70 years ago, the left would demand ‘peaceful dialogue’ with them, too. And send them money, too!

I think Obama & Co. simply didn’t want to believe the news reports they were getting from Benghazi, the same way we were told not to jump to conclusions in the Ft. Hood shootings. Then the White House called it an incident of workplace violence, not terrorism.

That same mindset applies in this instance of the assassination of our ambassador to Libya–Obama simply refused to believe such a thing could happen. Of course they had to lie all along, because they first were lying to themselves. With a complicit MSM filled with people of similar mind who will protect their current leader at all cost, it became a matter of where we have one who lies and another will swear to it. Back and forth, back and forth.

Now that it has all unraveled, and their simplistic notions are in question, they all want to make a scapegoat of someone who isn’t their own, and move on like none of it ever happened. They couldn’t be wrong in their eyes; tere was a failure, yes, but not from their side.

People like this have led us into wars because they make America vulnerable time and times again, and our enemies are sure to see it. They will strike at opportune moments, instances made available to them by American liberals.

This coddling, excusing, and turning a blind eye to the nature of Islam has got to finally stop. We need to vote out Democrats from every office down to dog catcher, punish the MSM any Constitutional way we can find, and make liberals persona non grata throughout our society for generations to come.

Here ya go, ma’am.

The two former Navy SEALs killed in last week’s attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi were not part of Ambassador Chris Stevens’ official security detail but took up arms in an effort to protect the facility when it was overrun by insurgents, U.S. officials tell the Washington Guardian.

The two former SEALS, Tyrone Woods, 41, and Glen Doherty, 42, were not employed by the State Department diplomatic security office and instead were what is known as personal service contractors who had other duties related to security, the officials said.

They stepped into action, however, when Stevens became separated from the small security detail normally assigned to protect him when he traveled from the more fortified embassy in Tripoli to Benghazi, the officials said.

The two ex-Seals and others engaged in a lengthy firefight with the extremists who attacked the compound, a fight that stretched from the inner area of the consulate to an outside annex and a nearby safe house — a location that the insurgents appeared to know about, the officials said.

kingsjester on September 22, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Libs will probably take issue with this, but I don’t care; it’s in their DNA. They simply lack both integrity and responsibility. They’re all Anthony Weiner.

This White House is nothing more than a collection of Anthony Weiners. They party until they get caught, and when they do, they lie about it -even in the face of overwhelming logic and evidence- until the lie is proven such. Then they deflect and hide.

And the ironic thing is, the lapdog media enables this process, which inevitably makes the outcome much worse, by not challenging them with what everybody already knows instinctively to be true. They perpetuate the coverup.

They deserve each other.

BKeyser on September 22, 2012 at 11:44 AM

Was the Ambassador killed in the safe house? or the consulate? Does anyone know?
