Revealed: Mitt Romney’s tax returns

posted at 3:31 pm on September 21, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Mitt Romney’s campaign released his 2011 tax information this afternoon, as well as a notarized letter from PriceWaterhouseCoopers attesting to Romney’s tax rates from 1990-2009, and I must say: Well played, Romney campaign. Well played, indeed. The Democrats have been making a federal case of Romney’s supposed “tax secrecy,” with countless ads and speeches and the voice in Harry Reid’s head making Romney out to be a greedy, tax-evading corporate mastermind of epic proportions, but the Romney camp just let them huff and puff until they wore themselves out, and now they’re releasing the information on their terms. I’m sure the Democrats will find some stupid, populist way to continue to criticize Romney over this, but… BAZINGA:

Regarding the newly-filed 2011 Tax Return:

-In 2011, the Romneys paid $1,935,708 in taxes on $13,696,951 in mostly investment income.

-The Romneys’ effective tax rate for 2011 was 14.1%.

-The Romneys donated $4,020,772 to charity in 2011, amounting to nearly 30% of their income.

-The Romneys claimed a deduction for $2.25 million of those charitable contributions. …

Regarding the PWC letter covering the Romneys’ tax filings over 20 years, from 1990 – 2009:

-In each year during the entire 20-year period, the Romneys owed both state and federal income taxes.

-Over the entire 20-year period, the average annual effective federal tax rate was 20.20%.

-Over the entire 20-year period, the lowest annual effective federal personal tax rate was 13.66%.

-Over the entire 20-year period, the Romneys gave to charity an average of 13.45% of their adjusted gross income.

-Over the entire 20-year period, the total federal and state taxes owed plus the total charitable donations deducted represented 38.49% of total AGI.

During the 20-year period covered by the PWC letter, Gov. and Mrs. Romney paid 100 percent of the taxes that they owed.

So, let’s just take a second here to process this. Mitt Romney, who is ostensibly uncaring, out-of-touch, and disdainful of poor people, gave more than 13 percent of his income (amounting to millions and millions of dollars) over twenty years to charity, and didn’t even always take the full tax deduction. (The bastard!) By at least one count, the average effective federal tax rate for Americans is 11 percent — and Romney’s average annual rate was 20 percent, also amounting to millions and millions of dollars that went into the federal government’s coffers. He has done nothing wrong or shady, unless you consider being a wildly excellent businessman to be a vice, and the finger-pointers now look pretty darn dumb.

If this isn’t it, can somebody please explain to me exactly what it is that a “fair share” is supposed to look like? Are we supposed to detest rich people, or should we admire them? Will the real Barack Obama please stand up?

ALSO…..

I still don’t know where I saw this reported, if someone can find it, but I read of a study of the giving habits of the Members of Congress and it showed that Republicans on average gave far more to charity than did Democrats.

What does that say about who “cares” the most?

Democrats love to “care” as long as they’re doing it with other people’s money.

Of course, if I’m wrong, I take it all back.

JRCash on September 21, 2012 at 3:59 PM

FYI: Mr. Romney donated 30% of his income to charity. OBOZO – the GREAT RE-DISTRIBUTOR – gave a measly 1-5% before becoming president. Mr. Romney’s $2 MILLION TAX PAYMENT was enough money for OBOZO to support more than 200 of the “47%.” Mr. Romney’s $4 MILLION to charity could support more than 400 of the “47%.” So, AT LEAST 600 (and likely many, many more) low-to-middle income people benefited financially from Mr. Romney’s success.

TeaPartyNation on September 21, 2012 at 3:59 PM

Smart putting this out near the end of a Friday. It simultaneously takes the issue off the table and robs most lefty pundits to find some populist bull crap until at least Sunday. Teresa Heinz Kerry Releases Part of Her 2003 Tax Return

Heinz_kerryForm_1040_2

Teresa Heinz Kerry on Friday released a portion of her 2003 federal tax return, reporting that she paid $627k in federal income taxes on $2.3 million of AGI, primarily from dividends and interest. She received $5.1 million of gross income, $2.8 million of it tax exempt interest income. Ms. Heinz Kerry, who filed separately from Senator Kerry, thus paid federal income tax at the rate of 12.3% of her gross income and 27.4% of her AGI. She refers to herself as “Teresa Heinz” on the tax return and lists her occupation as “philanthropist.” For the Kerry campaign’s accompanying press release, see here.

Unlike President & Laura Bush, Vice President Dick & Lynne Cheney, and Sen. Kerry (here and here), who have released their entire 2003 returns (but not all accompanying statements), Ms. Heinz Kerry released just the front two pages of Form 1040, as did Senator John & Elizabeth Edwards.

David Cay Johnston reports in the New York Times on some of the missing information on the forms released by Ms. Heinz Kerry:

One line in the Form 1040 that was released indicated she had a job for which $2,230 in taxes were withheld from her paycheck, but gave no details. A spokesman for the Kerry campaign said this income was related to an investment she had with a limited liability corporation, although he would not provide any more information.

Tax documents that would indicate if Ms. Heinz Kerry has offshore accounts were withheld, as were the schedules detailing her charitable deductions, interest expenses and the nature of the $14,412 in capital gains she reported. But Paul Bschorr, a lawyer for Ms. Heinz Kerry, said Friday that none of her personal investment accounts or accounts controlled by her family trust are deposited outside the United States, a step some wealthy American use to defer or escape taxes.

No information was provided about how much income was earned by trusts of which she is the beneficiary. If the trusts are as large as reported – and the Kerry campaign has not challenged the billion dollar estimate – then even a modest 5 percent return would have generated $50 million of income, 10 times what was on the two pages released by Ms. Heinz Kerry. A statement released by the Kerry campaign noted that income taxes are paid directly by the Heinz family trust, in addition to taxes that Ms. Heinz Kerry pays.

http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2004/10/teresa_heinz_ke.html

Sound the alarms!!!!! Incomplete returns!!!! Offshore Accounts!!!!

And don’t tell me that Teresa’s money is irrelevant when discussing her husband. He doesn’t have much money of his own and he loves to dodge taxes…..yacht, yacht….

So Mitt Romney gave 13.45% of his income, including $4 million in 2011 alone, to charity over the last 20 years, and paid about 1.5 times that much in taxes. Oh, the greedy capitalist vampire!!!

Meanwhile, the wonderful righteous share-the-wealth Citizen of the World President couldn’t give a dime of charity to his own brother, George Obama.

Charity is as charity does, not as charity says.

Or, as Saint James put it, faith without works is dead.

At last report, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was found deep beneath Yucca Mountain gobbling 20 pounds of crow.

Romney told us during his RNC acceptance speech that “the President promised he would stop the oceans from rising and heal the planet–I promise to help you and your family.”

Most people reading Romney’s tax returns will believe him.

Steve Z on September 21, 2012 at 4:15 PM

Why didn’t he claim the full charitable amount?
This seems a bit odd. Were they gaming this return to avoid having it come in under 13%…or 12%?
Didn’t he said he pays what he owes ‘and not a dollar more!”?
Seems he paying a heck of a lot more than that $1 more this election year…I’m just sayin’.

Romney estimated earlier his 2011 returns would show 19% to charity – seems that was before they decided to reduce his allowable claim there.
(Obama gave 22% to charity in 2011.)

They are admirably charitable –
but pay way to low a rate.
Redistribution up is ok , it seems.

This still doesn’t offer any transparency on off shore, his IRA gazzilions, etc. – not to mention actual returns.

No fat lady singing yet…

This little flight was reported to cost the taxpayers about $24 million, and I couldn’t decide if it was intended to be “an Obama event” (like buzzing NYC in AF1), in anticipation of his next two L.A. fundraisers in 5 days, or a final NASA bow (and nod to the indispensable JPL), or what. You’re a moron. He didn’t release ten years of tax returns, he released a summary, so there’s no caving. Secondly, they’d always said that the returns for 2011 would be released in the fall…which is what they did. And if they truly wanted to avoid commentary, they would’ve released this info on Friday NIGHT, not right in the middle of the afternoon.

changer1701 on September 21, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Romney has said for months that he would release his 2011 return once it was complete.

BacaDog on September 21, 2012 at 4:19 PM

Yes, and he gave the McCain campaign all the information that has been revealed today:

Steve Schmidt, McCain’s former campaign strategist, who viewed Romney’s tax returns when the presumptive nominee was being vetted for the vice presidential slot in the last cycle said Romney was an “extremely wealthy man.”

He said Romney had turned over 23-years’ worth of tax returns to the McCain campaign to vet that were extremely complex. But Schmidt also said there was nothing in the documents that would have precluded McCain from picking Romney.

“Mitt Romney went through this process and what I can tell you is that he’s a person of decency with the highest ethical character and background,” Schmidt said. “There was nothing that was disqualifying. That pick in 2008 was not about any deficiency with Mitt Romney. It was a political decision that we made in a very bad political circumstance.”

If you were an employer (and you are) pretend these two candidate’s resumes are on your desk for you to decide. Mitt Romney would be who’s who’ in America, successful businessman, charitable, loving, religious, excellent husband, father, grandfather, honest, patriotic and an asset to any community ever found in. Obama a half breed, bastard child from a communist, dysfunctional family, marinated in racism, communism, entitlements, rabble rousing, community organizer, contributing nothing to any venue ever found in, radical muslim sympathies, pathological liar and fraud, associated with terrorists of all stripes, and exhibiting a raging hate of the United States. Who will you hire to be the CEO of this once great country???

Marco on September 21, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Haha, what a charlatan. “Charitable”.

tommyhawk on September 21, 2012 at 3:48 PM

You do realize that with comments like that one, you give flesh to the walking caricature of brain-dead liberal, right? Totally brain-dead, non-sequitur insult, devoid of any rational thought. Completely incapable of accepting that maybe the challenger was not the tax cheat you liberals claimed and unable to process that information in a coherent manner.

Just makes you look like a darnfool. Gives no one here any reason to even read any of your postings, let alone consider them as some sort of reasoned counter-argument to the prevailing views of the posters on this blog.

AZfederalist on September 21, 2012 at 4:26 PM

You are basing this on nothing but a press release.

This jerk slimily says that it would be un-American to pay more than the minimum amount of taxes required by law. And then behind closed doors disparages an entire group of people who do the same thing. He’s a creep.

tommyhawk on September 21, 2012 at 3:44 PM

You know idiot that almost all his income is Capital Gain and the federal tax rate on Capital Gain is only 15%… Most of the democrat voters pay no federal income tax what so ever. Do you now how may democrat voter parasites are living off the millions of dollars that Romney paid in taxes not to count the millions of dollars he gave in charities?

mnjg on September 21, 2012 at 4:26 PM

Dang it! We weren’t planning on THAT kind of document dump for a Friday.

VietVet_Dave on September 21, 2012 at 4:27 PM

They’re going to say he gave to the church and that doesn’t count.

NoVAHockey on September 21, 2012 at 3:37 PM

Yup. (Note the comments.)

acasilaco on September 21, 2012 at 4:27 PM

Let’s see Obama’s medical records, too. No doubt they’d reveal he’s still a smoker and that Valerie Jarrett has his nuts in a jar on her desk.

natasha333 on September 21, 2012 at 4:01 PM

Complete medical records, never. All he will give us is a three line letter from his ‘doctor’ saying: yep, he’s in good health.

Complete medical records would reveal what caused those horrific X-shaped scars on the back of his head. I believe a part of his brain had to be removed, the part that deals with arithmetic, science, economics, things like that.

Consider we what we know of Obama’s history is spotty at best, your cries for transparency are very hypocritical.

kingsjester on September 21, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Well, that’s a different debate.
I was pointing out that we still don’t have transparency on Romney’s returns going back several years – as is traditionally what gets released.
(Unless you’re trying to claim Hawaiian Banks should be considered ‘offshore accounts’ as well?)

monkeyboy on September 21, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Love how the trolls are trying to twist this. Keep it up, keyboard queens.

The only thing people are going to see are the millions to charity.

M240H on September 21, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Hey, “Patriotic ‘President Obama Raise My Taxes’ Millionaires,” Mitt Romney didn’t need a law to make him pay more than “his fair share.”

Reid lied. Progs cried.

mnjg on September 21, 2012 at 4:29 PM

This still doesn’t offer any transparency on off shore, his IRA gazzilions, etc. – not to mention actual returns.

No fat lady singing yet…

After 4 yrs of Hussein, our shuttle program is canned and our Ambassadors are being raped and killed by muslims.

burrata on September 21, 2012 at 3:56 PM

In fairness, the shuttle program was canceled during the previous administration. However, the replacement expendable manned launch platform, The Constellation program was started to maintain manned space flight capability. A 3 to 4 year gap in US manned flight capability was expected, with manned flight to resume in about 2015. Jugears decided to cancel the Constellation program and switch NASA’s priorities to making the Religion of Peace feel better about itself so that maybe they wouldn’t stone as many women or burn as many embassies or kill as many diplomats as they were. We all see how well that has worked out.

AZfederalist on September 21, 2012 at 4:30 PM

I suppose there’s some merit to the idea that visiting HuffPo might, on occasion, expose me to something I’m not getting from my more usual right-leaning sources… but GOOD LORD the level of discourse over there is appalling!

Ignorance I can almost understand, but the level of willful stupidity on display over there is simply beyond comprehension.

its actually pretty amazing that a return like that with several trust invlved (all of which have to be completed first before the personal return) and all the K1s needed for filing have been received. a return like that being filed before Oct 10th or so is a feat. for PWC.
