Libyan protesters rally against militias, storm jihadist group’s headquarters

posted at 8:34 pm on September 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

The “Day of Love” hasn’t gone so well elsewhere in the region, so let’s pay some attention to a noteworthy exception.

For many Libyans, the death of Ambassador Stevens represented an unacceptable excess on the part of the militants. Ansar al-Shariah, is the group suspected in the killings.

About 30,000 Libyans in Benghazi poured into a square in front of the main encampment of the group, unfurled a Libyan flag and shouted “with our lives and souls, we redeem you, Benghazi!,” Al Jazeera and other news services reported. Some held signs reading “The ambassador was Libya’s friend,” and “Libya lost a friend.”

They didn’t just protest in front of the group’s headquarters. They broke in and chased the jihadis out, allegedly freeing 20 captives in the process. (“The capture of the base was celebrated elsewhere in the city by parades of cars touring the streets, honking their horns.”) Several protesters were reportedly wounded in the process. Reminds me a bit of the Awakening in Anbar province: When your “security” is being provided by jihadist mafias who are running protection rackets and killing opponents, after awhile you’re going to get fed up. Stevens’s killing (and the prospect of losing much-needed American aid) may have catalyzed a backlash, and not just in Benghazi. The AP reports that even residents in jihadist-friendly Darna are exasperated:

The anti-militia fervor in Darna is notable because the city, in the mountains along the Mediterranean coast north of Benghazi, has long had a reputation as a stronghold for Islamic extremists. During the Gadhafi era, it was the hotbed of a deadly Islamist insurgency against his regime. A significant number of the Libyan jihadists who travelled to Afghanistan and Iraq during recent wars came from Darna. During the revolt against him last year, Gadhafi’s regime warned that Darna would declare itself an Islamic Emirate and ally itself with al-Qaida…

“The killing of the ambassador blew up the situation. It was disastrous,” said Ayoub al-Shedwi, a young bearded Muslim preacher in Darna who says he has received multiple death threats because has spoken out against militias on a radio show he hosts. “We felt that the revolution is going in vain.”…

Leaders of tribes, which are the strongest social force in eastern Libya, have come forward to demand that the militias disband. Tribal leaders in Benghazi and Darna announced this week that members of their tribes who are militiamen will no longer have their protection in the face of anti-militia protests. That means the tribe will not avenge them if they are killed.

Among the many jihadists from Darna: Abu Sufian Qumu, the alleged ringleader of the assault on the Benghazi consulate.

Not sure if this is enough to spare Libya from efforts to cut foreign aid overseas, but it certainly gives them a leg up on Egypt and Pakistan. For your listening pleasure, two major voices in that debate: First, Rand Paul with Michael Medved, and second, Marco Rubio on the floor of the Senate.

I learned something this week… it only takes one person in a country to do something reprehensible to justify extreme acts. Right?

Cut off aid. I don’t care how many march. The Islamists are more committed and the money, in one way or another, will end up in their hands.

Might have been a few there with that goal in mind, but (a) 30,000 is a pretty large group and (b) Egypt wants foreign aid too and they didn’t do anything like this.

Allahpundit on September 21, 2012 at 8:43 PM

This is exactly the kind of thing that I’ve been wanting to see–and for the West to encourage–since 9-11-2001. If Islamic terrorists are an extreme minority, then Islamic countries should oust their sorry carcasses to the curb and be done with them.

Baerwulf on September 21, 2012 at 8:43 PM

But of course, Islam is and Muslims are irredeemable in total and what we should be doing is just bombing them all and forgetting all this “not a war against Muslims” trip, right hotairians?

These people deserved to be praised. Hating Islam and seeing it through the prism that many here seem to, is about the equivalent of judging Christianity solely off the KKK of old, or off Timothy McVeigh, or abortion clinic bombers.

Yeah, there’s a number of them who are just plain eff’d up deserve to be resisted and fought. But the vast majority of Muslims are normal people just trying to live their lives, be with their families, and improve their situation.

And we need THEM.

To me this is nothing but an “appeasement” from the Libyan government to a)show fake USA support and b) get more of our money.

Sorry, I am not buying any of this, seen this way too many times and was forced to participate in similar “government support” actions.

I don’t think the case has been made, all due respect to Rubio, for sending funds to these nations.

As he admits, we’ve been sending our dollars over there, by the millions at a time, for YEARS…DECADES… and its gotten us… protests and attacks.

The argument can be made that all of the nations in that region are not the same. Granted. Still, why should we be sending them out hard earned tax dollars. Frankly, what’s in it for us?

Perhaps, we should make any foreign aid directly contingent upon, and subject to, CONCRETE PROOF OF POSITIVE RESULTS.

Good intentions haven’t produced good results. Promises haven’t produced results. We’ve poured far too much treasure, and spilled far too much of our blood, down that rabbit hole. Its time to stop.

No concrete positive results, no funding.

The Libyan government decried what happened, has worked hard to get information out (and around our MFM) and has generally acted well in this matter. And it is just an interim government on shaky ground that could easily be liquidated by jihadists for doing these things.

In other words their government has done more to uncover what happened than OUR OWN GOVERNMENT has done for the American people. No matter what the horror of the event, the Libyan government has done the right thing and deserves respect for that, and our thanks.

Are you guys serious? Or are you really just that cognitively dissonant? You realize that for the last few years Al-Qaeda has shifted it tactics to try not to kill muslims? How would that have looked around the world if not only did they fight and kill average normal Muslims, but ended up getting their asses destroyed, literally, anyway? When 30,000 people gather outside your gate and theirs no “winning” no matter how guns you have, and killing will hurt your cause, just leaving and regrouping is not a mind boggling concept.

But by all means, continue to believe that anything that doesn’t support your desire to write them all of with impunity and let them all have it is a conspiracy theory aimed at attacking you.

I think we need to remember that people in the Middle East suffer under the Islamists as well. It may take a while for the fever to pass but eventually if you leave them be I think they will rise up on their own. Our presence there may only give an excuse for the oppressors to point to outsiders as the source of the problem.

But when things like this happen, or when people rise up in the streets organically as they did in Iran when Chauncey Gardner first took office it is our role and responsibility to support them and not turn our backs. This doesn’t necessarily mean troops or money but moral and political support with the promise of trade, peace and friendship.

Unfortunately the current bunch in Washington do not believe in freedom. They may believe in Democracy but do not understand that it is merely mob rule by another name. That was the Arab Spring. Rice and that clueless bunch of imbeciles don’t believe in the principles that make a society civilized… those of free speech, property rights etc… that are independent of the type of government and inalienable. That is why Obama is so ill-equipped to address the problems in the world. Because he is the personification of those problems.

Do you instead portend that all Muslims are bad people out to do nothing but kill and that the smartest answer is to actually just write them all off, give them no choice for harbor but with the fundamentalists, and choose to take the war to a group of people that is the size of the entire US population 5 times over?

Boomer_Sooner on September 21, 2012 at 9:16 PM

“Muhammad declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion (that would be ISLAM, and Mohammad is their “Perfect Man”) against all the rest of mankind.” -John Quincy Adams

“Islam is as dangerous in a man as rabies is in a dog.” (Winston Churchill)

We need them for what exactly? What has Islam/Muslims brought to the world that is of the least value?*******

“In Egypt 81 percent said they agreed with the al Qaeda goal of “requir[ing] a strict application of Shari’a law in every Islamic country” (65% strongly); only 12 percent disagreed. Pakistanis were similar with 76 percent agreeing with this goal (52% strongly); 5 percent disagreed. Indonesians, however, agreed by only a narrow plurality: 49 percent supported the goal (just 14% strongly), while 42 percent disagreed. In Morocco in late 2006, 76 percent agreed.”

sharrukin on September 21, 2012 at 9:20 PM

Well good for them. It’s good to be reminded that countries aren’t monolithic. Remember the protests in Iran? The presence of Islamists in a country does not automatically mean that each and every one of that countries inhabitants must share their views. Any one of y’all would fall over laughing if someone tried to claim that america was monolithically conservative because of the popularity of Rush Limbaugh, or monolithically left-wing because Obama was elected president. Why then do some of y’all find it so hard to believe that there are Libyans who are have no more desire to fall under the oppression of extremism than we do?

They were meant for those heavily armed men in militia offices, those guys only know English.

This is USSR all over again. “Here, take this sign, stand there, scream ___________ when prompted and make sure the camera sees you. Extra 2 hours’ pay on your next paycheck”.

I think we need to remember that people in the Middle East suffer under the Islamists as well.

Voluble on September 21, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Then, they need to fight and bleed for peace, democracy and a civil society.

We’ve wasted enough blood and treasure on people, who are either too afraid to stand up to or agree with members of a misogynistic, homophobic, anti-Semitic, Christophobic, child-abusing, maniacal, homicidal, suicidal, totalitarian, 7th century death cult.

I’m done. I.Just.Don’t.Care.Anymore. At all. If they want to join the rest of us in the 21st century, they are welcome; otherwise, they can kill each us as far as I’m concerned.

If they f*ck with us again, I have no qualms whatsoever of dropping a nuke on them. No more quagmires in Iraq or Afghanistan. No more overthrows like in Libya or Egypt. Just massive death and destruction on the scale of Hiroshima and Nagasaki until they stop.

They are oppressed because they permit themselves to be.

Enough.

viking01 on September 21, 2012 at 9:25 PM

In the wake of the Aurora, CO, theater massacre, Progs told us that the problem was not the movie, but the delivery system, i.e., guns; therefore, we should have more gun control laws to protect people from lunatics like James Holmes. In the aftermath of the attacks in Cairo and Benghazi, Progs have told us that the problem was speech, i.e., an admittedly blasphemous (if you are a Muslim), but otherwise amateurish movie, not the delivery system, i.e., radical Islam or even the internet.

Why? Is it because speech is fine for Hollywood and Progs want more gun control so using the actions of a gun-wielding Joker to further their aims is a win-win? Yes.

But, when a Coptic Christian insults the “Prophet Mohammed” (and the administration falsely accuses the filmmaker of being the proximate cause), why do Progs not stand up for his free speech and attack the delivery system (if one were to believe that the youtube video were, indeed, the cause), which is radical Islam and/or the internet?

Can it be that neither, of course, would further their interests of 1) believing that radical Islam is not a threat; 2) blaming the West’s “imperialism, colonialism and oppression of third world peoples;” 3) moral relativism (All religions are equal. If both Mormonism and Islam were criticised in a magazine, would your rather wake up in Provo or Peshawar?); 4) undermining and destablising Western capitalism; and, 5) the enemy of my enemy is my friend? Absolutely.

Is it cowardice, hypocrisy, and evidence of their double standards and openness to “suppressive tolerance”? Definitely.
