Harry Reid calmly responds to Romney’s tax release: “He’s hiding something. He’s hiding something!”

posted at 5:44 pm on September 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

Reid’s original claim, of course, wasn’t that Romney was “hiding something” but that a Bain investor had told him Romney hadn’t paid income tax at all for 10 years. We found out a few hours ago that that’s not true if your 10-year window includes 2011, and if you believe PricewaterhouseCoopers, it’s not true for the period from 1990-2009, when he paid an average annual effective rate of 20.2 percent.

Time for an apology, or time to move the goalposts? Longtime Reid-watchers know the answer. From a Las Vegas Sun reporter:

Still waiting on a full report from the Sun but evidently that’s the crux of Reid’s reponse to the revelations that Romney’s (a) quite generous in his charitable giving and, (b) unlike the vast, vast majority of cheap liberal class-warrior frauds out there, willing to pay even more federal tax than he’s legally obligated to. No word yet on whether he’s angry at that “Bain investor” for lying to him either, but maybe the Sun’s story will have that too.

Meanwhile, speaking of goalpost-moving, the meme du jour on the left as I write this is that, by paying more than he owed, Romney’s disqualified from the presidency by his own standards. He told an ABC reporter in July, “I don’t pay more than are legally due and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don’t think I’d be qualified to become president. I’d think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires.” That was a silly overstatement, especially when he knew or should have known that he’d overpaid just this past year, but of course the only reason the left is even pretending to care about it is because they need to salvage something from the wreck of their “he’s hiding something! he’s hiding something!” narrative about the returns. On that note, enjoy this clip via Mediaite from MSNBC this afternoon of S.E. Cupp trying to contain her irritation as the official liberal damage-control talking points are unspooled in front of her. Imagine sitting in that chair every day and having to watch the DNC’s spin-sausage being made. Every day.

Exit question: Why didn’t Romney release the 2011 returns months ago? Someone made the point earlier on Twitter that the lead story on the Sunday shows probably would have been O’s Libya security failure; now, quite possibly, it’ll be this.

FYI: Mr. Romney donated 30% of his income to charity. OBOZO – the GREAT RE-DISTRIBUTOR – gave a measly 1-5% before becoming president. Mr. Romney’s $2 MILLION TAX PAYMENT was enough money for OBOZO to support more than 200 of the “47%.” Mr. Romney’s $4 MILLION to charity could support more than 400 of the “47%.” So, AT LEAST 600 (and likely many, many more) low-to-middle income people benefited financially from Mr. Romney’s success.

BTW: slimebag dingy-harry WILL NOT RELEASE HIS TAX RETURNS — of course, neither will debbie “blabbermouth” schultz, neither will dingbat pelosi, neither will nearly all other d-cRAT socialist extremists who consider releasing tax returns the most important thing in the world (for Republicans, that is!)

“…I’d think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires…”

I agree it was a dumb statement, but Mitt could always turn around and claim he was being snide. Though his obvious integrity will preclude that, unless he really was and kept it to himself all this time. So, I have to stick with dumb, and let the liblets hang on to it. The comment doesn’t matter to me at all.

As for Harry the Reid, he sounds like a whiny kid brother who runs to mommy and simpers while stomping his feet in frustration, “Susie has candy and she won’t share it with me! I know she has it! I know it, I know it, I know it!”

Good. When Obama’s lap dogs bring it up, point out the pettiness and turn the attention back to the failure of Obama’s foreign policy. The MSM is not going to let the real issues see the light of day, so it’s a great opportunity for Republicans to point out that they are vomiting the WH talking points and move on to whatever issue they want to address.

Wasserman-Shultz has no problem doing the robotic talking points routine and virtually nobody calls her on it. We need a hybrid Newt/DWS bulldog to go after the MSM and Obama in an articulate, professional, firm, and aggressive manner. The MSM sets itself up; we need to start picking that low-hanging fruit.

Well, not to be snide, but what you legally owe depends partly on how you fill out your tax return. So Romney did pay what was legally due. I always interpreted his past statement to mean that he doesn’t cheat his taxes, but that he doesn’t write a check on top of his tax bill either.

SAZMD on September 21, 2012 at 6:20 PM

was that Toure (mis)quoting the Bible at the end? The point of the Widow’s mite isn’t just that she gave all she had to the poor; it’s that she did it without fanfare, while the rich were making a big show of their donations.

We’ve seen this election that Romney dislikes highlighting his own charitable giving, because he understands that lesson. If not for the baying of diseased hounds like Harry Reid about his taxes, Mitt’s charitable giving would still be a relative secret.

As a fellow Mormon, Reid really should know better, but his partisan rage blinds him to Romney’s good works because he sits on the other side of the aisle. It’s utterly shameful behavior, unbecoming of a Latter-day Saint, and I denounce it.

So, when do the cretins on the Spin Cycle have the same conversation about how Obama is not qualified for re-election since he said that if he didn’t have the economy turned around in 3 years, it would be a one term proposition. Why aren’t they going after Obama for having the audacity to run since the economy has obviously not turned around?

Exit question: Why didn’t Romney release the 2011 returns months ago?

i would wager they were completed yesterday. first: he’s loaded up with trusts. all the trustwork needs doing BEFORE you can complete his return. the trust send out k1s that then get incoporated into his pers return. ya gotta get all the K1s coming INTO the trusts, then DO the trust returns. then get those K1s plus all the other stuff, and romneys got a lot of “stuff”, get all the foreign reporting done (which is very time consuming). all that has to be done when the prerpaer has time to do it. from Aug 1 thru Sept 15, mr PWC has been workiong on calendar year corporations return on extension (due Sept 15) [and i am sure his return has people devoted just to it, but he needs partner review and partner time]. my guess is this past week, after the sept 15 deadline was finished (when the trust were probably completed) the trust K1s were slipped into the framed up shell of his 1040 that they’d been working on for the last 6 months, final tech review, one day, on wed, partner review on thursday. bang. done. heres your return, on friday. romneys not the onl;y one in the country who was handed his return yesterday. and most of them look like his. and the really hard ones, the complex ones, wont be done for another 3 weeks. the fact they got it to him yesterday is pretty good.

Waggoner on September 21, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Oh! I think Romney should take the high road here. When he wins he needs to send a nice note to both Reid and Pelosi letting them know that their actions and statements have made them people he can’t work with because of their integrity issues. Stating that he’s willing work with their party but not with them.

Then it would be up to the party to decide if they want their “leaders” shut out of any meaningful discussions with the President.

BTW, I think Romney should write a similar letter to the GOP leadership concerning the future of Boehner and McConnell. You aren’t going to get change in Congress under any circumstances as long as they are stuck on stupid. Or more accurately in this case stuck on weasel.

Last I checked SE was a strong conservative. What are you talking about? Did she cross over to the dark side? I wouldn’t believe it if it happened.

I think he is just upset that SE is at MSNBC. I don’t know, but I think SE gave a lot of thought about going in to the lion’s den before she accepted the offer. I don’t think she’s a turncoat. I think she’s pretty courageous, actually.

She’s not a strong conservative cause she doesn’t have the intellect to understand conservatism. Did you watch that clip? Her defense of Romney was, “sure he’s an idiot but he’s a generous idiot”. This the best she could come up with even knowing the topic was going to be there.

Reid is the poster child for everything that’s wrong in Congress. He thinks like a felon, and assumes everyone else is too.

Imagine what Harry’ll be like if Romney wins.

I think society is getting worn-out on all the gotcha politics already. I know I am. I don’t think these ‘gaffes’ on either end make much difference to the average voter, just to people like us who follow this stuff closely. Obama has more than his share of inconsistencies and slip of the lips, so I think most voters just shrug stuff like this off. I think the debates are going to matter the most in this election. That, the economy and ad spending, but especially the debates. I think that’s what the undecideds are waiting for. Mitt needs to do well in the debates to bring this home.

Please God, oh please, can we please have a Republican majority in the Senate so we can yank the gavel from this POS! Holy crap I cannot freaking stand that swarmy little man! Let’s see YOUR freaking taxes you piece of crap! Gawd his voice just sends me over the edge. I actually think he irritates me more than rat ears.
