Video: Obama now ducking questions on security failures at Benghazi consulate

posted at 4:01 pm on September 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via BuzzFeed, simple question from the Univision moderators: Why wasn’t your administration better prepared to secure America’s embassies on September 11th? The response, true to form, is nearly six minutes of meandering about how it’s important to stay engaged in the Middle East, how the Mohammed movie is “offensive” but shouldn’t be a pretext for violence, how he’s decimated Al Qaeda’s leadership, etc etc etc — everything except an answer to the question that was asked. The closest he gets is insisting that they redoubled their security efforts afterward, which is super but not much of a consolation to Chris Stevens, I’d imagine. And if you’re thinking maybe he’ll address this at length later, go watch the video of Ben LaBolt that Guy Benson’s posted. For obvious reasons, the Foreign Policy President will not be speaking about this particular foreign-policy “achievement.” In fact, according to The Cable blog at Foreign Policy, the Marines aren’t expecting to deploy a security detail to Libya for a good five years or so — even though Chris Stevens himself reportedly worried for months before his death about being on an Al Qaeda hit list. Why the Romney campaign isn’t destroying Obama over this instead of hammering at that old “redistribution” audio, I’ll never understand. Presumably, after the media wet itself over his earlier Libya-related attack on O, Team Mitt has simply decided to back off.

Two clips for you, one of Obama and the other from CBS this morning citing witnesses to the Benghazi attack who say there was no Mohammed-movie protest at all beforehand. That’s three credible news sources that have reported that; McClatchy was on it first and then Fox News’s sources chimed in a few days later. The press seems consumed with the daily spectacle of Jay Carney lurching from one new talking point to another about whether the Benghazi attack was preplanned or whether it was even a “terrorist attack” (yes to the latter, says Carney — finally), but those are secondary questions. The threshold question is why Chris Stevens was left effectively without security in an area that’s crawling with jihadis and has been for years. Forget for a moment whether the assault on the consulate was spur of the moment or carried out by Al Qaeda versus some other paramilitary group. The fact that some group would attack at some point and would do so quite effectively was a foregone conclusion. Why wasn’t the White House prepared?

Why the Romney campaign isn’t destroying Obama over this instead of hammering at that old “redistribution” audio, I’ll never understand.

I can think of three reasons:

1) Romney’s afraid of being targeted again by the media for daring to speak out on foreign policy.

2) He wants to keep the focus on domestic policy.

3) He plans on hammering Obama on this at the debates and wants to hold his fire until then.

Of course Romney won’t get to speak on foreign policy issues until the second Presidential debate which is the townhall format and even that will likely center heavily on the economy. It’s the third and final debate that focuses on foreign affairs. Maybe for now he’d rather just let Obama damage himself with his sorry attempt to cover up his bungling of the Libyan attack.

2001 was so long ago, why remember all that horror that we brought on ourselves by occupying the middle east and not understanding their side. We should allow Muslims to practice without interference. If we didn’t need their oil, so dirty and 20th century, we could just let them be, but big oil is to blame. We should put a solar panel on our cars or a wind farm next to every community. That way, we could leave those peace loving muslims alone. /s

He said said in a LONG response to a question on his not keeping his promise on immigration reform that he didn’t promise to get everything done that he promised to do to get elected. The actual quote is: “I did not promise that I would get everything done, 100%, when I was elected president”

He said “People want a hand up, not a handout.” What the F does that mean?

Why wasn’t the White House prepared?

Well, when your working assumption is that the followers of the religion of peace love the USA because of your own Muslim background and your unique, personal Obamaness, then why would you need to protect such places?

However, even if I were to buy that the nutcase movie was the cause of all this unrest, which started on 9/11 (and I don’t), it’s not like they weren’t other such violent protests in the ME as a result of other “artistic” expressions demeaning or cartooning their f**king prophet. So, why wasn’t the WH prepared for this?

It doesn’t matter what Romney says at this point because the media that swoons at the sight of President of everyone including people who are consulate staff whose bloody hand prints on the wall bear a striking resemblance to his new flag will merely call his statements “an unfortunate gaffe”.

Lily on September 20, 2012 at 4:22 PM

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/P/PROPHET_FILM?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

The television ads in Pakistan feature clips of President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during press appearances in Washington in which they condemned the video. Their words were subtitled in Urdu.

“We absolutely reject its content and message,” said Clinton in the advertisement.

The advertisements end with the seal of the American Embassy in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the ad was produced by the embassy, which spent $70,000 to air the 30-second spot on seven Pakistani television stations. Pakistan is the only country where the ads are running. The embassy wanted to run the ads because it determined that the messages of Obama and Clinton were not reaching enough of the Pakistani public through regular news reporting, Nuland said.

I don’t think Romney was planning on a foreign policy campaign whereas he surely expected to have an economy campaign and his campaign was geared up for emphasis on the economy.

The situation on foreign policy is probably uncertain and the last thing he would want is to make some misstep that may seem minor to him but could blow up in his face and change the focus of the campaign.

The death of the US Ambassador was a bad thing. But bad luck could happen to anyone. Now if a series of US Embassies were overrun and more diplomats killed (and demonstrably the US Marines were not dispatched to prevent that or the diplomats pulled out in a timely manner) then I would expect to see a more significant effort by Romney because then it goes beyond bad luck and into the question of judgement.

Russ808 on September 20, 2012 at 4:22 PM

This wasn’t ‘bad luck’, it was a hit, pure and simple. I wouldn’t even call it a terrorist attack since it wasn’t aimed at taking out civilians. The ambassador was specifically targeted, and somehow the assassins knew exactly when he would be there, even though he drove in a civilian car, not a protected embassy SUV.

Doughboy on September 20, 2012 at 4:09 PM

..ya know, doughboy, there’s gotta be some kinda calculus going on here in the Romney campaign. I have heard various sources that the internal polling for Obama is terrible and Romney knows it. Moreover, I have heard that — what a lot of folks have been saying — the economy is what people are paying attention to now with he foreign policy thing a close second. They’re getting more and more pissed with each tank of gas and bag of groceries they buy.

I originally thought that Romney would fire up the Death Star after the D&C but maybe the M. E. blow-up presented some “free advertising”. I mean, he made his point in the press conference — two points, in fact. First that the SCOAMF foreign policy sucks and second that the media is in the tank for the SCOAMF big time.

As for the polls: needles have not been materially moved except for the vacillations of Gallup and Raz. (GutMeAndPokeMe’s schizophrenic commentary notwithstanding.) And the others have been skewing and pulling similar stunts with a vengeance.

Yeah, I am clinging to my seat watching the fourth quarter play out. But I think it’ll be more than a last-second buzzer-beater that wins it for Romney.

The irony that Libya and Egypt will destroy his foreign policy ‘creds’ is beyond schadenfreudig.

Schadenfreude on September 20, 2012 at 4:29 PM

No, faraway, I think AP is exactly right here.

In fact, the R/R campaign and/or proxies should be making a very broad and intense assault on foreign policy and nat. security against the current incompetent outfit.

There is SO much material. No cheap shots or second guessing (the bane of most for. pol. criticism for many years) required, none at all.

* general foreign policy incompetence

* specific failure and unfitness of all the major players, from the pres. (disastrous Cairo speech, disastrous end zone dance about Bin Laden hit, weakness and inattention setting the stage for increased risks and challenges from A-stan to the MidEast to now China/Japan); to his buffoon VP; to his utterly incompetent SecState (whose agency has major fatal failures to account for, and couldn’t manage to utter an intelligent American response to the Cairo/video nonsense in THREE tries – two from the post and one from Main State; to the amateurish nat. sec. advisory operation that had to be told “STFU” by the respected mild-mannered former SecDef after the Bin Laden death festival

* one ad specifically hammering the entire admin. and press for the most shocking/disgraceful response to the Cairo protests – detention harassment of a US citizen (guy in CA) under a transparent pretext, a la the old Soviet bloc – all done in a way to achieve wide publicity

And on – and on. There are real disasters unfolding, with real and reasonably basis in US policies of the last several years for which these idiots should be held accountable.

Mitt needs to win big, and WIN FOR A REASON.

This ridiculous “president” and his clown-car admin. have “Carterized” themselves – dammit, affix that label and turn up the heat to ridicule level. It’s entirely deserved, on substance, and actually the proper role of a political opposition, in terms of tactics.

The only way to protect our Ambassadors is to arm them with Obama college transcripts.

Odie1941 on September 20, 2012 at 4:25 PM

And here I foolishly thought the best way to protect them was to nuke any foreign nation where one of them was killed. Silly me…

SWalker on September 20, 2012 at 4:28 PM

I love this new LiberalThink App… makes life pretty darn easy and a bit stupid.

Odie1941 on September 20, 2012 at 4:30 PM

To this day, this part of Hillary’s statement just grates on me because they knew or should have known (considering the obvious signs of torture to his body) that

“The mission that drew Chris and Sean and their colleagues to Libya is both noble and necessary, and we and the people of Libya honor their memory by carrying it forward. This is not easy. Today, many Americans are asking – indeed, I asked myself – how could this happen? How could this happen in a country we helped liberate, in a city we helped save from destruction? This question reflects just how complicated and, at times, how confounding the world can be.

“But we must be clear-eyed, even in our grief. This was an attack by a small and savage group – not the people or Government of Libya. Everywhere Chris and his team went in Libya, in a country scarred by war and tyranny, they were hailed as friends and partners. And when the attack came yesterday, Libyans stood and fought to defend our post. Some were wounded. Libyans carried Chris’ body to the hospital, and they helped rescue and lead other Americans to safety.

He was tortured for up to 9 hours and then dragged through the streets with his body being photographed on cellphones, as the lovely Libyans took their forms of “souvenirs” or “trophies.”

And, the idea that the Smart Power Administration would wonder “how in the world this could happen?” is just sickening.

We all knew this last week.

Why wasn’t the White House prepared?

What happened, do we suppose, to those who aided and abetted Gadaffi and Huda the Executioner, the woman that Gadaffi had running Benghazi before the rebellion? Top level people ran with her to Gadaffi mostly, however, there were lower echelon bureaucrats, locals, and those who served them, who simply disappeared into the woodwork.

The area is rife with those who supported Gadaffi and its been a magnate for Al Quaeda and other terrorists since the rebellion.
Its the strategy of denial

My question would be: how is it that we allowed a consulate, which doesn’t even qualify for the grade of security afforded an embassy, to operate in Benghazi, with no real security for the personnel, in the FIRST PLACE?

thatsafactjack on September 20, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Obama always filibusters questions.

The debates will be the same. He will dodge, filibuster, and the media will declare him as the winner.

El_Terrible on September 20, 2012 at 4:21 PM

The first time he does it, Mitt should say that he thought Obama had been practicing to keep his answers more precise. “You failed at that, like you failed at jobs”

faraway on September 20, 2012 at 4:30 PM

And if you can’t change it why the hell are you running now?

crazywater on September 20, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Because he hasn’t finished looting the Treasury to pay off all the “supporters” he intends to hit up for donations to his presidential library. In that HillBuzz article on the Obamas’ planned retirement resort complex in Oahu, it says Hyatt-heiress and Obama stooge/financier Penny Pritzker is urging Obama donors to contribute to his campaign by telling them the Obamas plan to be very generous in doling out presidential pardons, remaining TARP monies, government grants and loans, etc. — just like the Clintons did for their supporters before they left the White House.

Good one.

Yes. Whenever Barry tries to dodge questions Mitt needs to throw the spotlight on those very same questions. It’s simple really.

And the Religion of Peace has been a roiling brew of snake venom ever since Muhammed developed personal hygiene problems.

Obama will say that since ambassadors didn’t get tortured and killed when W was prez, he thought they were snug and safe. When in doubt, Obama assigns blame…mostly to Bush.

With Obama just putting his foot in his mouth so badly on Univision, Axlerod probably has the Trolls on an Emergency Conference Call.

Why can’t we ask the question that perhaps the Muslims were offended by the Democrat’s high-fives over OBL’s demise?

The DNC convention’s touting of our dear El Presidente’s nailing of Osama could have offended them – shouldn’t they have taken that into account while celebrating that for partisan political gain?
