Video: Obama now ducking questions on security failures at Benghazi consulate

posted at 4:01 pm on September 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via BuzzFeed, simple question from the Univision moderators: Why wasn’t your administration better prepared to secure America’s embassies on September 11th? The response, true to form, is nearly six minutes of meandering about how it’s important to stay engaged in the Middle East, how the Mohammed movie is “offensive” but shouldn’t be a pretext for violence, how he’s decimated Al Qaeda’s leadership, etc etc etc — everything except an answer to the question that was asked. The closest he gets is insisting that they redoubled their security efforts afterward, which is super but not much of a consolation to Chris Stevens, I’d imagine. And if you’re thinking maybe he’ll address this at length later, go watch the video of Ben LaBolt that Guy Benson’s posted. For obvious reasons, the Foreign Policy President will not be speaking about this particular foreign-policy “achievement.” In fact, according to The Cable blog at Foreign Policy, the Marines aren’t expecting to deploy a security detail to Libya for a good five years or so — even though Chris Stevens himself reportedly worried for months before his death about being on an Al Qaeda hit list. Why the Romney campaign isn’t destroying Obama over this instead of hammering at that old “redistribution” audio, I’ll never understand. Presumably, after the media wet itself over his earlier Libya-related attack on O, Team Mitt has simply decided to back off.

Two clips for you, one of Obama and the other from CBS this morning citing witnesses to the Benghazi attack who say there was no Mohammed-movie protest at all beforehand. That’s three credible news sources that have reported that; McClatchy was on it first and then Fox News’s sources chimed in a few days later. The press seems consumed with the daily spectacle of Jay Carney lurching from one new talking point to another about whether the Benghazi attack was preplanned or whether it was even a “terrorist attack” (yes to the latter, says Carney — finally), but those are secondary questions. The threshold question is why Chris Stevens was left effectively without security in an area that’s crawling with jihadis and has been for years. Forget for a moment whether the assault on the consulate was spur of the moment or carried out by Al Qaeda versus some other paramilitary group. The fact that some group would attack at some point and would do so quite effectively was a foregone conclusion. Why wasn’t the White House prepared?

Oh, and one more thing.

Yes, the R/R and proxies should include, in many of their hard-hitting ads, specific indictments of the “press” for their distortion and dishonesty. I’m talking about “hard” stories, not political stories.

One of (several) jaw-dropping elements of the 9/11 fiasco and aftermath was the Soviet-style distortion of the press. The MidEast was in flames, an ambassador was murdered for the first time since a guy named Brezhnev was running a place called the Soviet Union, an American citizen was being detained and harassed for involvement in a perfectly legal activity to appease Third World authoritarian mob sensibilities, China was crudely antagonizing and trying to intimidate its neighbors in a way not seen for more than a millenium – and the “story” was a press conference and press release by Romney (all of which were substantively unassailable, and in fact echoed – as always ineptly – by the admin. within hours)?

Those with enough practical intelligence and sense have long viewed the press as a very unreliable info source (esp. the “elite” brands like NPR and NYT) on most issues. Time to not just pick a fight with those who buy ink in barrels, but to declare a war of extermination on them. Seriously. For the country and the world, this needs to be done – it’s not just for the GOP or this campaign. The 9/11 debacle and aftermath have been the most outlandish failure of the press – which is saying quite a bit – in recent history, perhaps ever. It’s a big club – beat them to a bloody paste with it, without pause or mercy.

Didn’t fit their goal of ‘low profile’ presence. Unfortunately, Stevens and the other Americans’ profiles are now six feet lower as a result. So sad and so outrageous.

..ya know, doughboy, there’s gotta be some kinda calculus going on here in the Romney campaign. I have heard various sources that the internal polling for Obama is terrible and Romney knows it. Moreover, I have heard that — what a lot of folks have been saying — the economy is what people are paying attention to now with he foreign policy thing a close second. They’re getting more and more pissed with each tank of gas and bag of groceries they buy.

The War Planner on September 20, 2012 at 4:28 PM

I suspect that Romney knows the media’s game at this point. Anything Romney says will be spun and skewed in such a way as to allow another 24-hour news cycle to be dominated by the idiot talking heads who claim seemingly in a daily basis that the latest so-called gaffe is the final nail in the coffin for a campaign that’s tied with Obama in the polls.

So there is a level of timidity in the Romney campaign now, although I think in the case of Libya that’s not such a bad thing. There is literally no upside for Obama on this at this point. If it was in fact a terrorist attack, it reflects poorly on his leadership since he offered no security for Stevens despite ample warning that something might happen on 9/11. And if Obama continues to try to pin this on a YouTube video, it makes him sound cowardly and accommodating to Islamic radicals. Plus it also forces him and the left to p-ss all over the First Amendment which I don’t imagine will play will with independent voters.

Maybe then it’s not such a bad idea for Romney to sit back, focus on domestic policy, and just let Obama harm his foreign policy favorability ratings all on his own.

Listening to his initial BuzzFeed video comments, he could just as well have been the President of Egypt as of the US, he hedged so much, saying so little. He said the people who attacked the Benghazi consulate weren’t representative of the Libyan people, and then he said, the people who produced the “offensive” video weren’t representative of people in the US. He’s saying nothing. He acts like he’s not a player in this drama, that he doesn’t identify more with one side or another, doesn’t prefer one side’s values over another sides, and has nothing to offer to change the values and beliefs that led to this. Just two incidents that happened in each country in isolation. No Koran that says to behead the infidels, no Constitution that guarantees freedom of speech.

I don’t know how many times this point has to be made: the Marine Security Guard detachments are not bodyguards. And they are not there to defend the compound perimeter against intruders. Their job is the protection of classified information inside the chancery. In emergency situations, they can be called upon to assist in protecting the lives of mission staff. But, given that Ambassador Stevens allegedly died of smoke inhalation after the building was set on fire, I’m at a bit of a loss what difference you think a detachment of Marines would have made.

“I don’t oppose all wars. And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war.

- State Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), October 2002

“It is said that I used the “Pottery Barn rule.” I never did it; [Thomas] Friedman did it … But what I did say … [is that] once you break it, you are going to own it. . .

- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, October 2007

Obama decided, rashly, to engage in a “dumb war” in Libya where he put this country on the side of Al Qaeda, among other radical Islamist groups. We had no national security interest in driving Qaddaf’fi out-of-power. Whether we like it or not, foreign policy and national defence are not first conducted with “the best interest’s of the party ‘NOT THE UNITED STATES’ in mind. It may sound selfish, greedy, lacking in compassion, but it is also true.

Benghazi was the best supplier of foreign-born Al Qaeda in Iraq fighters. This was well-known long ago. We all knew that the “rebels” were either affiliated with or infiltrated thoroughly by Al Qaeda members and AQ-related terrorist groups. It was a stated fact…by them.

Democracy for democracy’s sake is not noble or righteous…the Nazis came to power through elections. For the most part, democracy can’t be declared via statements, elections, or laws, sua sponte. It is dependent upon a culture. A civil society is a prerequisite for a democracy and that is one thing that the Middle East, as it is currently situated, lacks.

Further, it cannot be said that it is “a good thing,” pro se, that one dictator is removed and replaced by another or authoritarian regime. Regardless of how one feels about dictators, Qaddaffi did keep Islamists and radical terrorist organisations from flourishing. Choosing sides in a dispute between one dictator, Qaddaf’fi, and a possible-probable-actual other is not “Smart Power.” It is “dumb.”

Per “The Pottery Barn of Foreign Policy,” Obama “rashly” inserted the United States “broke” Libya; thus, he “owns” it.

“It is said that I used the “Pottery Barn rule.” I never did it; [Thomas] Friedman did it … But what I did say … [is that] once you break it, you are going to own it. . .”

- Former Secretary of State, Colin Powell, October 2009

The same is true regarding Egypt. Obama took sides, demanded the departure of the Mubarak regime, and believed, naively I might add, in the promises of the Muslim Brotherhood to not run a candidate for the Egyptian Presidency. Now, the MB is going to try Americans in abstentia for blasphemey. A guilty verdict = a fatwa, not that the former is necessary for the latter. He exchanged an ally, who was a dictator, for a country, Egypt, that is or is not, depending upon the day, an ally of America.

Per “The Pottery Barn of Foreign Policy,” SCOAMF “broke” Egypt and he “owns” it.

Clarification. The Marines are there to protect the MISSION. Mission being the Ambassador himself, and assorted classifieds, as you note. The building itself and grounds is not “hallowed groud” as Hollywood is fond to point out.

So in the final, or not so final analysis we are left with

A press corps who shot before they aimed, and shot at the man who got it right.

A press corps who turned what should have been a moment of mourning and investigation into the causes of these deaths into a political tirade at the man who spoke the truth with feeling.

A press corps who peddled deception in the name of their political favorite to the detriment of all.

A President who blamed the First Amendment for a problem caused by his lax procedures, his failure to heed warnings and his lust for victory, RATHER than blame the perpetrators of the violence against American embassies and personnel.

A President who looked for censorship to make Americans feel guilty for his failures an inability to set limits on ignorant rage and violence.

A press corps who supported this viscious attack on Americans and their freedom of speech…every step of the way!
A willing press corps that realized he could not perpetrate this fraud without their help.

A shameless administration, a foul media that would eliminate the freedom on which their very livelihood is founded.

It’s mourning in America… for a compromised executive branch that cannot tell the truth, a profession that used to protect our freedoms which conspires to take them away…and for our Heroic Navy Seals and Christopher Stevens, who deserved better from all of them.

As for Mitt Romney not jumping on this and ramming it down Obama’s throat…he aims before he fires and is waiting for the balance of the information to come in. Good man, that!

Why the Romney campaign isn’t destroying Obama over this instead of hammering at that old “redistribution” audio, I’ll never understand. Presumably, after the media wet itself over his earlier Libya-related attack on O, Team Mitt has simply decided to back off.

I am not so sure it is that simple…after all, Mitt did jump in there right off the bat and look at the reaction he got. It was just today that the Obama administration admitted the obvious, Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Some in the media are actually acting like reporters rather than the Obama cheerleaders we are used to. It might that Romney is waiting to see what the media comes out with before he goes after this anymore.

There will be a reign of fire coming down soon from the Romney camp. They have it all timed out. I know it…(well, I pray it is so. I’ve taken up praying these last 4 years.)

Typicalwhitewoman on September 20, 2012 at 5:22 PM

busa, Swab, TenWheeler and others – I think the Marine discussion is more apt (but still a bit off-point) for the Cairo situation.

In Libya, it’s a question (and a big, yawning one) of why a consulate was even open in the first place, considering the security situation. A whole topic in itself, and really one we can’t intelligently discuss without reviewing the country/post security plans and any relevant stuff from Dip. Security and maybe intel types.

It is useful for people to understand that the Marines’ primary mission is protection of classified info and equipment, not perimeters or personnel. In Baghdad we had a war zone, and a huge Marine detachment that WAS for physical security – an infantry unit, not part of the embassy guard program. But that was clearly a special case.

This is one of those situations where fatal incompetence is almost certainly a factor, some of it may lie at the career/professional level, we don’t really know without all the details, BUT there is still clear political-level and policy failure of disastrous proportions. That’s why I said above – not a cheap shot or typical infantile Beltway second-guessing to lacerate the admin. and senior leadership in this case, even based on available info.

If not Mitt, his best proxies (The Stache, Sunununununu, and others) should be making specific, well-founded, but very harsh political attacks on the foreign policy side. As said by someone else above, make this the landslide it should be – and as I am saying, make it a landslide FOR A REASON.

This man is so disgusting with his non-answer – he makes a campaign speech!
Obama and Clinton have blood on their hands for the inexcusable lack of clearly needed protection at that consulate on 9/11.

LOL! Next he’ll be posting people’s stupid previous comments to show their hypocrisy.

I didn’t read all the comments, but is it curious how incurious the Univision people are about Fast and Furious? Or did they ask about it and I missed it?

I am at a place where, when I try to collect my thoughts on almost any subject related to Obama and his cronies in the media, I hit a kind of immediate mental block.

This is most likely an auto-immune defense mechanism, to keep my blood pressure from rising so high I not only explode but also single-mindedly alter the weather patterns and bring about instantaneous climatological doom.

I really can’t handle any more of these people and hope with all my heart that they go away in a few months, and something will remain of the Republic for my children and their children to enjoy.

Because if this POS wins in November, it really is over for our way of life. If it isn’t already.

bobcalco on September 20, 2012 at 6:17 PM

This is what the debates will look like.
Obama reciting his typical gibberish until the clock runs down and the moderators won’t have the stones to press him on it.

On the day after the four Americans were killed in Libya Obama was in Colorado telling an audience of clueless fools that his top priority was to protect our people in the embassies.

The audience mindlessly cheered. Did they know or did they even care that our gov’t did not protect those four Americans in Libya.
Obama has no soul.

bobcalco on September 20, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Take heart. This morning I was speaking with my son on the way to school and he has some friends that have just turned voting age. He said that they view this election as the lesser of two evils. So I asked him… “Which do you think is more evil: The America you know and love, or Communism”?

The point was very well taken. We’ll get through this. Get past the MSM (domestic psy op terrorists) and listen to your gut. You know Obama won’t win.

I could never figure out why Obmama went on his rear kissing tour right away after the election nor his actions with those that hate us since. Then I went and saw 2016 and it all made sense. I used to think. Well Obama is just an idiot who’s over his head. But I do think he loves America. Now I think Obama is just an idiot who’s over his head who really never did love America. I have never thought that about ANY U.S. President. This guy has got to go.

Minnfidel on September 20, 2012 at 6:59 PM

ice cold,
You are right of course. Your comments on money. In my three years at a stinking third world shithole as Military attaché, I learned the host nation was responsible for perimeter defense (with RSO oversight) Our embassy had host nation provide body guards for Ambo and DCM (crossed my fingers every time they tossed their loaded Uzis in the back of “my” C-12).

If the “host” nation is unable or unwilling to provide the requisite security for the DIPLOMATIC mission…instead of “sending in the Devil Dogs” highest level SECSTATE/POTUS discussions are held to close down the embassy (temp or permanently) and bring all or most diplomats and family members home. Every embassy has an emergency plan for this but it is not a decision taken lightly. Timely actionable Intel is key as an evacuation takes time even if you are “ready” for it.

We’ll likely never learn what intel was on hand prior to the Ambo’s murder.

I only spent one Sep post 9/11 at our embassy…we were almost locked down the week before and after 9/11…including MSG dressed out with BA etc.

On every level…this was a leadership failure. Will anyone be held accountable? Wonder what young diplomats-to-be are thinking about all this while sitting through their “Area Studies” at FSI ?

SwabJockey on September 20, 2012 at 7:02 PM

Why the Romney campaign isn’t destroying Obama over this instead of hammering at that old “redistribution” audio, I’ll never understand. Presumably, after the media wet itself over his earlier Libya-related attack on O, Team Mitt has simply decided to back off.

Exactly. Romney can’t go the distance on any issue that agitates the media or requires that he fight and take risks outside his comfort zone. It’s why he’s so fixated on the economy (the one safe area he knows best, and where he knows the media doesn’t wish to tread). This is also why he’s the least suitable candidate to go up against the multifarious evil and madness of the Left we could possibly have nominated, and if he loses, why he’ll lose.

Don’t know how many of you have seen this one but it goes hand in hand with the statement above that Stevens though that he might be on an al queda hit list. He could well have been courtesy of the Dear Leader!
From what I have researched several days before 911 local authorities came to Stevens and asked if he wanted some additional security,he said no.
Now the only reason he would say no is if her were CIA! Rumors were he was CIA. furthermore so were the two ex seals and the other supposed gamer. They knew it was all gonna hit the fan on 911 what they didn’t know was the safe house wasn’t safe anymore. Now who had that info? Makes you wonder. Also Stevens knew waaay too much as well. He went back to the Chicago bathhouse days with zero and rhambo,he had to have been a major liability just days before the election.
Other reports were that he was trying to get the weapons back that CIA had given to the Libyian MB and terror types to take out quacdk daffi.
If the entire fiasco sounds f…ed up it is.

rodguy911 on September 20, 2012 at 7:50 PM

Why should he? He should stay out of the way and let President of everyone including ambassadors I have not provided security for answer all the questions.

It doesn’t matter what Romney says at this point because the media that swoons at the sight of President of everyone including people who are consulate staff whose bloody hand prints on the wall bear a striking resemblance to his new flag will merely call his statements “an unfortunate gaffe”.

Lily on September 20, 2012 at 4:22 PM

How long will it be before some clever person on our side replaces the bars in that narcissist’s flag with the bloody hand prints of consulate staff.

Basilsbest on September 20, 2012 at 7:55 PM

I performed my civic duty and watched this sickening clip of the interview.

1. He flatly avoids the question as to why they were unprepared.
2. He blames the video for creating the protests which were then taken advantage of. This is a flat out lie.
3. When asked whether the attacks were the work of al Qaeda he says they haven’t completed their investigation. If so why does he make the previous statement.
4. He claims he ended the the war in Iraq. This is another flat out lie. The Surge ended the war. He opposed the Surge.
5. He claims to have decimated al Qaeda. Another lie. Al Qaeda was decimated by the Surge in Iraq.

The SEc. State and various admistration folks went to the Hill today to brief Senators in a classified briefing. Apparently they were just trying to CYA. Imagine that. Hillary doesn’t want to take the fall and Carney was pointing security at the consulate questions all to the State Department. Who will go down with the ship?

I can’t sit through 6 minutes of his excuses. Did it really take the foreign press to get this question asked? Univision, really? Aren’t there any go-getter journalists in the U.S. who want to push harder? Jake Tapper is the only one that I can think of.

I think this Univision interview of Obama is going to be a dress rehearsal for the debates. In other words, it’s going to be a bloodbath. He’s got no answers for anything.

The Count on September 21, 2012 at 1:52 AM

WE are going to redouble our security for our embassy staff??

How do you redouble zero?

dutch love on September 21, 2012 at 2:30 AM

it’s a disgrace that the toughest press questions Obama has ever had to face came from Univision. Bravo Univision for demonstrating that not all media have become groveling lapdogs.

exceller on September 21, 2012 at 8:19 AM

It is a proven fact that working for the Obama admin in the middle east is hazardous to one’s health. I hope all future Americans going to that area in diplomatic jobs have bought additional life insurance and have the preminums paid up on that insurance. I have a feeling they will need it.

logicman_1998 on September 21, 2012 at 10:26 AM

Going to the interview on Drudge, obama’s number one priority is to safeguard our diplomats. Huh? I thought his number one priority was jobs. He is supposed to be focussing like a (coherent light) laser on jobs. Oh no, his number one priority is the middle class. Uh, I think his number one priority is fundraising. Without the funds anc crony capitalists, he won’t be in office to do his othe number one priorities.

Old Country Boy on September 21, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Yes, it is a disgrace that Obama seems to get better questions from foreign media than our own. That says so much more about our media than it does about theirs.

Obama forgot the cardinal rule of foreign media: They might be leftists like you, but they don’t vote for you (not that they wouldn’t, just that they have more pressing allegiances in their own nation) and your actions do have a profound effect on their country by the nature of the office you hold.

Most of them could care less if America and capitalism go down in flames. They just don’t want to deal with spillover or collateral from the fallout. In short, they are the Stalin to your Trotsky. In as much as you are comrades, they won’t hesitate to take you out (politically, not literally like Stalin did) for their own expediency.
