Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on September 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

There’s really no good way to introduce this except to parrot Charlie Spiering’s headline — “Obama denounces, then endorses corporate welfare in Ohio”.  No, seriously:

On the stump in Ohio today, President Obama denounced taxpayer subsidies for oil companies explaining to voters that he didn’t want to participate in corporate welfare. Then Obama proceeded to explain how he would offer more taxpayer subsidies for green energy companies.

‘Cause as long as I’m President, I’m not going to let oil companies write this country’s energy plan.  And I’m not going to let them keep on collecting four billion dollars in taxpayer-funded corporate welfare!  [cheers]

We’ve got a better plan.  We’ll keep on investing in wind and solar, clean coal technology.  We’ll invest to help farmers and scientists harness new biofuels to power our cars and our trucks.

You can’t make this up.  By the way, Solyndra cost taxpayers $520 million in corporate welfare when it went bankrupt.  That’s one-eighth of everything that oil companies get, according to Obama, but at least the oil companies actually produce energy.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Wild guess – he’s talking about ordinary tax write-offs that apply to any corporation with decent accountants, and no oil company is actually “collecting” any money at all.

What he says is bad enough, but that whiny, Beavis and/or Butthead tone really grates on my nerves. How could anyone listen to a whole speech by this moron?

Night Owl on September 18, 2012 at 8:08 AM

If he wins, four more years of a mediocre man telling us how great he is.

Perhaps he’s trying the ‘People Hear Only What They Want To Hear’ theory.

You are generous to call him mediocre.

In Obama’s world, those who produce something useful are punished and shamed, while those who produce nothing useful (but who donate heavily to Obama) are celebrated (and rewarded with millions or billions of taxpayer dollars).

If it weren’t for platitudes and cliches, Øbama would have nothing to say.

If Obama had nothing to say he wouldn’t be a narcissist that sucks at bowling and golf.

though he’d still suck at bowling and golf

Slade73 on September 18, 2012 at 8:31 AM

Why do we need wind and solar, when we can solve our energy shortage by keeping our tires inflated?

Or by growing more algae.

petefrt on September 18, 2012 at 8:33 AM

Can we just do away with the myth that the oil companies are getting 4 billion in checks from the feds?

Total lie.

J.H. on September 18, 2012 at 8:33 AM

Yawwwwwnnnnn. Another appeal to the 47%.

That will be IGNORED by the traitors in the Media.

PappyD61 on September 18, 2012 at 8:33 AM

Sounds like he was against it before he was for it. Is the audience a bunch of zombies or did they all collectively mumble wha’ did he just say?

Kissmygrits on September 18, 2012 at 8:39 AM

That’s right moron. Keep beating up on the oil companies as gasoline (due to your policies both foreign and domestic) races toward $5/ga. At this moment in time with families hurting financially, and alternative fuel technology not nearly ready for prime time you keep beating that drum. I drive a great deal and it hurts but I will gladly suffer high prices in the short term if it will get this clown out of office. Hit it HARD MITT!

What about the fact that GE paid no taxes 2010?

Oh, OH, what about Obama giving illegal carry forward losses to GovMotor so they will not have to pay $16 billion in taxes?

On the other hand GAAP rules for depletion and deprecation for oil companies should be taken away while other industries get to keep those deduction?

Welcome to a third world country of men and not of laws, a fundamentally changed country. Thank goodness we have an Economic Super Genius in the WH.

…hey!…he’s creating a lot of BTU’s in the ME…stuff’s burning!…He’s too busy campaigning to harness all that energy!

KOOLAID2 on September 18, 2012 at 10:16 AM

So many of my lib friends toss around the word “invest” like it’s a great and noble concept.

When done by private individuals it is – when done by the government, not so much.

Hill60 on September 18, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Crony capitalism over real energy production is Obowma’s goal. This is Obowma’s way of getting campaign donations vos company shakedown.

FYI: We fracked oil wells offshore in Southern California for OVER 30 years and never had any issues. If fracking can be accomplished in environmentally sensitive California, it can be in other areas of the country with the will of an administration to do so.

dthorny on September 18, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Apparently, it is sinful to actually get results in return for a taxpayer “investment”!!!

Obama-flavored Liberalism is truly a mental disease.

landlines on September 18, 2012 at 12:58 PM

Obama is playing a dangerous game in Ohio with that schtick, because right now, oil and gas are the only reason Ohio’s economy is staying afloat.

RebeccaH on September 18, 2012 at 2:23 PM

Did those people cheer him on? I’m sorry. I just couldn’t play the clip to listen to him this time. How did they get there to listen to him? On their magic brooms? What is wrong with the part of America that doesn’t understand we live in an energy based world? I am sick of meme that the oil and gas industries are evil.
