Latest Romney “embarrassment”: Israeli-Palestinian conflict unresolvable under current conditions

posted at 9:21 am on September 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

If this is the second-best clip that Mother Jones has on Mitt Romney, I think his campaign can breathe a sigh of relief.  MJ headlines this as “On Israel, Romney Trashes Two-State Solution,” but that’s not accurate.  What Romney actually says is that peace isn’t possible because the Palestinians won’t accept a two-state plan as a permanent solution … a point that has been obvious ever since Yasser Arafat walked away from a carefully-crafted deal at the end of the Clinton administration and called for another intifada.  With Hamas now in the mix and their parent group Muslim Brotherhood taking control of Egypt, the Palestinians have even less incentive to accept a permanent state of Israel.

All Romney does here is describe the situation realistically rather than aspirationally:

A new and potentially embarrassing video has surfaced from the same fundraising event that got Mitt Romney into hot water on Monday, but this time the focus is on foreign policy and peace between Israelis and Palestinians, which he calls  “almost unthinkable.”

In the video, Romney responds to a question about the “Palestinian problem” by saying that Palestinians have “no interest whatsoever in establishing peace, and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish.” …

In the lengthy and detailed comments at a fundraising dinner in Boca Raton, Fla., in May, Romney describes how he believes a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis would be nearly impossible to achieve, saying, “I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say, ‘There’s just no way.’”

Later, he says that, “you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem…and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it.”

What exactly is supposed to be “embarrassing” about this?  It’s a more honest assessment of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict than we’ve seen in decades from presidential-level politics, from either party.  Barack Obama promised that his leadership would lead to a breakthrough in the impasse, but he set the process back several decades by fumbling the question of construction in Jerusalem, which Mahmoud Abbas hadn’t raised as a deal-stopper until Obama handed him the issue.  That’s embarrassing.  I’d rather hear an American President talk straight about the impasse and the actual problem rather than provide us another Lucy-and-the-football promise for something over which we have little actual control.

This is all a perfect example of how the conservative and liberal minds differ in such dramatic fashion. No wonder their panties get so bunched up over racism and sexism where one has to figuratively tilt the head and squint to find the point of their bitterness.

These “leaks” say more about the msm and libs than it does Romney. The statements are true…and only upsets the mindset of libtard moonbats. Romney needs to keep saying these things – Use that clip of the woman talking about “Obama money”.

WiRichey on September 18, 2012 at 10:04 AM

I am starting to think that the Romney camp “secretly” recorded these and gave them to a liberal blog just so the media would run with it. People will pay attention because it was “a secret”. This way he can blanket the airwaves with his “ads” for free!

I had “heard” that O’Keefe was the secret videographer (did that ever get confirmed?) and was initially miffed. But then realized it would be his MO to secretly tape the truth and hand it to someone to “sell” it without realizing it’s real positive value to the supposed victim.

rlyle on September 18, 2012 at 10:19 AM

This might win Romney lots of Jewish votes…which could be helpful in Florida. Anyone who really feels sorry for the Palestinians wouldn’t vote for Romney anyway.

While Romney is discussing this issue, he could mention the fact that Palestinian soldiers invaded the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem (the birthplace of Jesus), held Orthodox and Catholic monks as hostages and trashed the place, until they were evicted by the Israeli army. Does a predominantly Christian nation like the United States want to make peace with those who desecrate one of the holiest Christian shrines on earth?

Romney is just facing facts: both Presidents Bush, President Clinton, and President Obama have failed to negotiate a “land for peace” deal that both Israel and the Palestinians can accept over 24 years, and the Israelis are building a wall around their territory. If the choice is between stalemate and surrender, Romney will choose stalemate, which Israelis would definitely prefer.

The towel-headed bastards were not evicted but rather negotiated their free way out – after raping a priest, heavily vandalizing the church, and threatening to blow up the holy artifacts. I have been making this argument for a long time.

Trouble is that Israel and the US don’t believe it, and Israel is placing itself in harm’s way by its silly adherence to this farrago.

Actually there was a two state solution Jordan and Israel, and Israel won the West Bank in a defensive war and so owns it by Right of Conquest. Now the Palestinians want a ‘do over’.

The West mistakes the low level of Muslim action with a disjunction between rhetoric and policy. Actually Islam is not operating under internal restraint but is too weak to do anything other than whinge.

Romney is right and the Left can’t stand the candor.

Gwillie on September 18, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Governor Romney should use this as an intro to an official get-tough policy on the ‘palestinians’. They have been offered the best offer they will ever get for statehood, and turned it down. They have to be sent a clear message that when they turn down an offer, the next offer will be worse than the last. Otherwise why make a deal?

No one knows this better than ME’ers. They are experts at bargaining.

Governor Romney should tell them that the US is disengaging from any ‘palestinian’-Israeli ‘negotiations’, and if the ‘palestinians’ want the US to be involved that they should put together a package of confidence building measures and implement them first.

If Governor Romney really spoke the truth, he would open a discussion of taqqiya, and whether we can ever make deals with muslims.

Please, don’t keep policy that will create peace between Israel and it’s neighbors a secret.

Also, economies have magically pulled themselves rapidly out of recession in America when the government decided not to get involved. And it’s not magic – markets are self correcting: it’s a crazy thought but when economic times get hard people are generally going to work themselves out of it on their own and together in the market place. But I’m sure we’d be much better off with the government inflating the currency and going into debt to “fix” the economy by funneling money to cronies.

While you concern trolls are feigning outrage over true and obvious truths about Israelis and Palestinians; the administration is still out there pretending that their ME policy isn’t literally and figuratively up in flames. That the attack of the Bengazi consulate was planned and those Americans were killed by the very people Obama claimed were rescuers.

So go ahead and double down on stupid you ignorant troll. The fact of the matter is that the more you idiots feign outrage over silly stuff the more childish you all seem from the rat-eared bastard on down to a worthless flea like you that is clearly part of the 47% who merely take from society while adding nothing to it at all. Bless your heart.

I’m beginning to think Romney leaked the video.

It proves he’s a conservative!

The Dims have the solution to bringing peace to the Israeli/Palestine situation and they’re just sitting on it? That’s more criminal than saying there is no solution.

CycloneCDB on September 18, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Romney doesn’t run away from this video espionage tricks…

But what 0bama???

Why does he and his henchmen release the videotapes of his promises to PLO spokesman and close U of Chicago friend Rashid Khalidi?

It is far more interesting to know what is on those tapes?

It is far more interesting because 0bama and his henchmen have gone to great lengths to prevent (?destroy) those tapes.

Mr, President release those tapes now.

wholefoodsrepublican on September 18, 2012 at 11:16 AM

I have zero problem with either video – they both are pretty accurate – about 47% pay no income tax (their payroll taxes generally do not cover the cost of the benefits received from the programs the payroll tax supposedly funds), and the ME assessment is spot on, and necessary for us to acknowledge if we ever truly want to see a lasting peace in the ME. I like this Mitt – and both of these positions are pretty mainstream ones. People working themselves up the ladder do not see themselves in the 47% – and current seniors don’t either. I would make ads of these and pour it on.

No gaffe – the truth, and refreshing. More of it please.

Zomcon JEM on September 18, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Y’all want this election to be about big things… this is what big things looks like. Telling the 47% of America that thinks the USG is Santa Claus that they are takers, as opposed to makers, and telling the American people that peace in Israel is impossible so long as there are non-Israeli Arabs involved; that’s big change.

So, are we prepared for big change? Or not?

Preach it Mitt! Be not afraid to pick up this fight…

JohnGalt23 on September 18, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Is anyone flooding the Romney site to tell them to press on? I am sure he has some stupid advisor telling him to back off.

Zomcon JEM on September 18, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Why doesn’t Romney say all of these things in a speech? They are all true and he can’t run away from them. Maybe Mother Jones is doing us a favor by forcing Romney to take a stand.

breffnian on September 18, 2012 at 11:05 AM

He and Ryan both have been saying these things as part of a theme of opportunity and self-sufficiency. This is just the leftist media getting upset that deadbeats are actually called deadbeats.

Happy Nomad on September 18, 2012 at 11:20 AM

It’s not a gaffe.

In Liberal Land the bad guy pointing the gun at your head, who has just gunned down your entire family can be *reasoned with*.

He can’t. He’s going to gun you down too after you’ve said all your pretty words.

The Paleostinians have made it crystal clear they are interested in a one state solution and that state will have a Jewish population of exactly ZERO.

So, Romney is correct.

CorporatePiggy on September 18, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Leaked videos are just what Romney needs. Romney would be wise to double down on everyting in videos and failure of Obama middle eastern policy.

Adding a little bit of reality to the political discourse?

“The truth? You can’t handle the truth!”

TerryW on September 18, 2012 at 11:22 AM

Speaking the truth…. the elephant in the room and the government entitlement thieves. Not polite to state the obvious. Redistribution means in simplistic non judgmental terms: “To take from one and give to another”.

There are people in massive numbers in America (I believe it is more than 47%) that have 100% of their existence paid for by the taxpaying working class segment of our citizenry and there is zero obligation for them to ever change that status nor to pay anything back…..ever! There are to be fair, some of that 47% that will attempt to alter their dependance, but the numbers are so low even the democrat party wont bring it up. Statistical data backs up Gov. Romney’s statement… which is being called a gaffe. A gaffe is when an incorrect statement or a misinformed statement is made in a public arena… in this case this was a statement made at a fundraiser and taped by someone who thought they could use it politically against him…(hello, politicians everyone have a camera or smart phone so if you say it, be sure someone is taping it)it is however not a surprise nor is it incorrect for him to use these outrageous numbers to bolster his support. We the people that are paying the bills have had it, we are being picked clean and our bank accounts drained by these entitlements that quite frankly are incredibly un-constitutional and not what the government should be doing with our tax dollars.

I hope Romany takes this to the mat and opens this flesh wound to the air, because the fact is there are people that have always been able to work but just plain wont and haven’t and we just can’t continue to spend trillions upon trillions of our hard earned money just to make them happy.

ActinUpinTexas on September 18, 2012 at 11:23 AM

So far the two releases I have seen have increased my enthusiasm for pulling the lever for Mitt tenfold.

Probably not the reaction that Mother Jones was going for…

Sugarbuzz on September 18, 2012 at 11:13 AM

CycloneCDB on September 18, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Obama’s position is that the Jews should be driven into the sea. He endorsed this concept when he changed the American position to one that supports a return to the 1968 borders (thus making it impossible for Israel to defend itself).

The fact of the matter is that kicking the issue down the road is about all that can be done so long as the Palestinians are against a two-state solution, demands right of return, and continues to fund terrorism.

Happy Nomad on September 18, 2012 at 11:24 AM

…because Obama sure solved it.

It’s a surreal world.

Schadenfreude on September 18, 2012 at 11:24 AM

The Ron Paul fans will not be happy about this. It might cause quite a stir. Heck, they might even decide to vote for Gary Johnson over this and bring his total up to 0.68%.

Only 1 Libertarian candidate for President has cracked 1.0% of the vote, and that happened 3 decades ago. Probably because the VP candidate was one of the Evil Koch Brothers.

The rest have only gotten 0.5% or so.

Del Dolemonte on September 18, 2012 at 11:26 AM

I never would’ve guessed that I would really like “Romney Unfiltered”. Now, I want to vote for Romnaey, instead of just against Obama.

MississippiMom on September 18, 2012 at 11:28 AM

…saying that Palestinians have “no interest whatsoever in establishing peace, and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish.”

If the “peace” comes as a result of “death to the jews”, they are all for it and will even die for it. There is some “interest”, but not one that would be acceptable to most Americans or live Israelis.

clnurnberg on September 18, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Wait!!

47% of Americans DON’T PAY ANY FEDERAL INCOME TAX????!!!

Why, that is quite an AMAZING FACT, don’t you think?

Del Dolemonte on September 18, 2012 at 11:26 AM

None of the Libertarian candidates, including (at the time, at least) Ron Paul, had the standing that Johnson has. The man won statewide election twice, and neither time was it particularly close. He has essentially, single-handedly removed New Mexico from the board.

I would be very interested in seeing, if Mitt really is down in the polls, how much of that shortfall is accounted by Johnson voters. It may be time to add his name to the mix.

JohnGalt23 on September 18, 2012 at 11:33 AM

Most libs see Israel as the terrorists and the reason for no peace in Middle East. So of course they’re gonna get wee’d wee’d up over it.

vcferlita on September 18, 2012 at 11:34 AM

With the MSM, Romney/Truth = Bad; Obama/Lies = Good.

Romney’s comments were frank and realistic. What’s the matter with that? There is a dilemma in Israel and there are no easy solutions.

COgirl on September 18, 2012 at 11:34 AM

This is supposed to be bad for Romney??

It sounds like for only the second time in my life we might get a President with reality based thinking.

If the electorate chooses Obama over this rational man, we are truly lost.

fadetogray on September 18, 2012 at 11:34 AM

Sure –
this is the same as ‘bitter clingers’ remark.
But it ain’t. Where Romney is dismissing people as not worth any efforts, Obama is is doing the exact opposite.
(I know you guys hate full quotes…it’s how you get to claim Obama doesn’t believe in ‘American exceptionalism’.)

“But the truth is, is that our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s no evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, a lot — like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they’ve gone through the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are going to regenerate, and they have not. It’s not surprising, then, that they get bitter, and they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
