Latest Romney “embarrassment”: Israeli-Palestinian conflict unresolvable under current conditions

posted at 9:21 am on September 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

If this is the second-best clip that Mother Jones has on Mitt Romney, I think his campaign can breathe a sigh of relief.  MJ headlines this as “On Israel, Romney Trashes Two-State Solution,” but that’s not accurate.  What Romney actually says is that peace isn’t possible because the Palestinians won’t accept a two-state plan as a permanent solution … a point that has been obvious ever since Yasser Arafat walked away from a carefully-crafted deal at the end of the Clinton administration and called for another intifada.  With Hamas now in the mix and their parent group Muslim Brotherhood taking control of Egypt, the Palestinians have even less incentive to accept a permanent state of Israel.

All Romney does here is describe the situation realistically rather than aspirationally:

A new and potentially embarrassing video has surfaced from the same fundraising event that got Mitt Romney into hot water on Monday, but this time the focus is on foreign policy and peace between Israelis and Palestinians, which he calls  “almost unthinkable.”

In the video, Romney responds to a question about the “Palestinian problem” by saying that Palestinians have “no interest whatsoever in establishing peace, and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish.” …

In the lengthy and detailed comments at a fundraising dinner in Boca Raton, Fla., in May, Romney describes how he believes a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis would be nearly impossible to achieve, saying, “I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say, ‘There’s just no way.’”

Later, he says that, “you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem…and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it.”

What exactly is supposed to be “embarrassing” about this?  It’s a more honest assessment of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict than we’ve seen in decades from presidential-level politics, from either party.  Barack Obama promised that his leadership would lead to a breakthrough in the impasse, but he set the process back several decades by fumbling the question of construction in Jerusalem, which Mahmoud Abbas hadn’t raised as a deal-stopper until Obama handed him the issue.  That’s embarrassing.  I’d rather hear an American President talk straight about the impasse and the actual problem rather than provide us another Lucy-and-the-football promise for something over which we have little actual control.

Run that in an ad in South Florida. Even the Philly media market would be a possibility.

Well, Team Obama certainly haven’t been doing such a great job in bringing the two sides together lately.

Maybe Obama can scrub all funding for NASA now.

Seems NASA has failed miserably in that Moslem outreach thing Obama touted a while back.

If stating the truth is a problem, we need more problems like it. Some people may prefer being lied to, but I am sick of it. Romney is right. For the Palestinians, the only solution is the end of Israel.

More and more of this kind of content proves Obama is empty.

nitzsche on September 18, 2012 at 9:42 AM

I like this honesty, and it’s not the first time he has said something like this. A couple months ago (or more), he pretty much said to a heckler that if you like depending on government, then vote for the “other guy”.

And it’s true. If you want to collect government benefits and don’t want a job, then Obama is your guy. If Obama wins because of that, then the USA has already gone to shit, and the only way back is if the people change, not the president.

The Rogue Tomato on September 18, 2012 at 9:42 AM

So I can see that the new direction is to demand that EVERY fund raiser is recorded by both candidates and broadcast so that we can comb through what they say to the people they’re shaking down for donations. It seems to be the best way of disseminating critical policy information on issues that are getting scant to no attention otherwise.

I hope Jimmy Carter the whateverth is ready for prime time. His selectively edited videos are going to thrust him into the spotlight where he’ll get to pontificate on the whys and wherefores of making, editing and releasing these tapes.

Most of “Romney-Care” was in fact written by the Democrats in MA. And when Romney signed the program into law, he vetoed 8 of the most expensive provisions.

All 8 of those vetoes were promptly overridden by the Democrat-dominated MA legislature.

If this is the October Surprise in September it sure is mighty damn weak!!!

This is not earth shattering. I’m beginning to think the MSM/Obama campaign is just trying to slow the Romney campaign down to desperately improve democrat turnout and try to help Obama in the debates. In fact there have been a couple of articles circulating yesterday that there are some concerns about Obama’s performance in the up coming debates.

Mitt should use this as an opportunity to call on the LA Times to release that audio of obozo at his 2008 fundraiser praising the Palestinians.

Won’t happen but it would make for a great compare-and-contrast for all of us bitter clingers.

…so the press keeps pissing in their pants for all the wrong reasons…what else is new?

KOOLAID2 on September 18, 2012 at 9:58 AM

It is sad state of affairs when Dems spent the last month telling outright lies and the MSM ignores them. Romney tells the truth and THAT’s when MSM goes into hyperdrive.

Mother Jones mad a huge tactical error. I’m chuckling because MJ is trying to be Breibart and it’s not working.

And the people this may influence, the undecided Conservatives and Libertarians will never side with MJ on anything, so this could bakfire on them. Truly amateur.

Mitt just reminded us all that the left can’t handle the truth. Heck, we can’t even get our regime to decide if Jerusalem is the capital of Israel or if Egypt and the Bro Hood is an ally or not.

Kissmygrits on September 18, 2012 at 10:00 AM

right. so as i understand, his message consists on kicking the can down the road on foreign policy and hoping that the economy will magically improve without doing anything.

winning message. great nominee, bravo gop!

This is a proposal to not interfere in unresolvable problems. Action, in such a case, is hubris and folly. Decades of failed frameworks and conferences prove that Romney’s statement is correct.

As for the economy, how has that “doing anything” been working? Unemployment and low profitability are a sign of failure. QE3 is an admission of failure. “Doing anything” is precisely our problem. Micromanaging consumer and business transactions has never led to the broad-based prosperity that will truly help everyone. Be honest, if a Pres. McCain had had an identical economic record, you’d be screaming bloody murder and for good reason.

You may be correct that the truth is not a winning message. The left has succeeded in propagating so many lies that sound governance may no longer be possible. If that is the case, it doesn’t really matter who wins the election.
