Awkward: Jay Carney disparaging Obama’s “bitter clingers” remark in 2008

posted at 2:01 pm on September 18, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

There has been much ado about (nothing, cough cough, what?) the mysteriously just-unearthed secret footage of Mitt Romney awhile back telling fundraiser attendees about his views on the 47 percent of Americans already certain to vote for President Obama. But of course, both the Obama campaign and the White House were all-too-quick to seize upon his remarks, trumpeting them as evidence for their ‘Mitt Romney is an unfeeling, out-of-touch, secretive, black-hearted, profiteering corporatist’-narrative and arguing that they ostensibly show disdain for average Americans. Wait a tick… déjà vu, anyone?

MSNBC’s Chuck Todd wondered as much to the reliably vociferous Obama campaign deputy press secretary Stephanie Cutter this morning, asking if Obama’s erstwhile “bitter clingers” comments don’t bear any resemblance to Romney’s (via RCP):

“Well, Chuck, he was saying the exact opposite of what Mitt Romney was saying. He was talking about how, you know, some people get frustrated by their circumstances and react to that and that we need to bring everybody together and talk to everybody about how we are going to strengthen middle class security. … Mitt Romney was saying the exact opposite. That 47% of the country are never going to vote for him because they don’t take personal responsibility for themselves, they consider themselves victims. And that they are never going to vote for him and they are not his concern. So it’s the exact opposite.”

Uh huh. But, that’s not quite what Jay Carney — the current White House press secretary, whose job it is to explain and defend President Obama — argued at the time back in 2008.

It seems that Carney felt so strongly about the issue, he even penned a piece about it — a fact that Bloomberg reporter Hans Nichols wasn’t going to let slide in today’s press briefing after Carney pontificated about President Obama being “president of all the people.”

Awkwaaaard.

Oops: I originally had Yahoo! News reporter Olivier Knox as Carney’s discomfort-inducing questioner; corrected now!

What Romney said is absolutely true and it is going to help him a lot with the Republican/Conservative base and with many independents who had it with people living on their expense. The irony is that many of the 47% think that they are part of the 53% and they agree with Romney that there are far too many people depending on tax payers handouts…

No problem there. You don’t think Jugears would actually hire someone competent, do you? If he did, that competent might show some superiority to Jugears in some respect and Jugears can’t have that. Jugears is not management material, he will only hire people to whom he feels superior, even in their supposed area of expertise. For us, that’s a good thing; I’d hate to have him with competent marxists and communists, the damage then could be irretrievable.

The flaw that I see with some of the attacks against Romney for the 47% statement is that while it may be ‘disparaging’ to the 47% who expect someone else to support them… many of them are probably going to be too lazy to vote; after all, they are getting their ‘free stuff’ off the backs of the 53% that are paying the bills (who probably WILL be motivated to vote).

Of course, this is based on the assumption that there will be an election… my doubts grow stronger each day.

He was basically trying to force a conversation on the entitlement society that it is unsusteinable long term if some are just takers. The examples he gave were correct in that he enumerated the types of entitlements in our society, and that some think they are entiled to receive said benefits, which is true. Of course the seniors on soc security and medicare ar not in the entitled category if you recognize that they all paid into the system for a long time, and some of them have also additional insurances, so they do not rely solely on the govt. I think Romney referred to the professional takers, the ones for whom welfare is a generationl thing in that it gets passed fom generation to generation and they never contribute anything. And he is right that they will never vote for him who promises jobs, not welfare.

Big joke- right? That people who represent the President of our country get caught red-handed lying and think it’s funny.

“We’re going to reshape selfish, mean-spirited America…I’m not interested in the suburbs. The suburbs bore me. And I’m not interested in isolating myself. I feel good when I’m engaged in what I think are the core issues of the society, and those core issues to me are what’s happening to poor folks in this society.”

– Barack Obama
