1998 audio: I believe in redistribution, says Obama

posted at 5:21 pm on September 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

Can’t hurt to remind low-information voters of this by having Drudge give it the red-font treatment, but … you guys already knew this, yes? The whole point of the Buffett Rule is that O wants a showy yet meaningless peg on which to hang his “the rich aren’t paying their fair share” argument. It would do next to nothing to reduce the deficit or help pull America out of its bottomless well of liabilities, but it’s a symbolic blow for redistribution and, hey, that’s good enough — especially when you’re running against a rich guy prone to saying stuff like this. (It also helps prepare the way for the more substantive battle over letting the Bush tax cuts lapse later this year.) Ace reminds me that this isn’t even the first clip of O talking about redistribution to make a splash during a presidential campaign: He said something similar in 2001, the audio of which appeared on Drudge’s site late in the 2008 race. In fact, there’s an even more famous example than that. As lefty Matt Yglesias tweeted earlier, doesn’t anyone remember Joe the Plumber?

“Of course not,” said Obama. “But what’s happened is that we end up – we’ve cut taxes a lot for folks like me who make a lot more than 250. We haven’t given a break to folks who make less, and as a consequence, the average wage and income for ordinary folks, the vast majority of Americans, has actually gone down over the last eight years. So all I want to do is – I’ve got a tax cut. The only thing that changes, is I’m gonna cut taxes a little bit more for the folks who are most in need and for the 5% of the folks who are doing very well – even though they’ve been working hard and I appreciate that – I just want to make sure they’re paying a little bit more in order to pay for those other tax cuts. Now, I respect the disagreement. I just want you to be clear – it’s not that I want to punish your success – I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you – that they’ve got a chance at success too.”…

Obama said, “My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. If you’ve got a plumbing business, you’re gonna be better off if you’re gonna be better off if you’ve got a whole bunch of customers who can afford to hire you, and right now everybody’s so pinched that business is bad for everybody and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

O’s never been terribly shy about admitting this, but it’s useful to remind voters of it while the media’s sputtering over what a grave insult the makers-versus-takers formulation in Romney’s “47 percent” comments is. Which, of course, is why the clip was leaked to Drudge.

While many who pay no federal income tax still pay payroll taxes dedicated to Social Security and Medicare benefits, a significant number receive those tax payments back completely through refundable tax credits. A study by the Joint Committee on Taxation found that in 2009, 23 million nonpayers that filed an income tax return got a larger sum back in the form of refundable tax credits than they paid in the form of the employee share of the payroll tax (6.2% of income). 15.5 million nonpayers received refundable tax credits that exceeded the value of both the employee and employer share of the payroll tax (12.4% of income). More broadly, I laid out in a recent blog post that the bottom 20 percent of income earners paid zero federal taxes on average in 2008 and 2009, according to CBO data.*

As Ben Franklin said so long ago: When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.

Like Hitler’s Mein Kampf, he told us what he was going to do, years before he got power. He preached redistribution long before he was on Joe the PLumber’s front lawn. He’s promised to destroy the healthcare system to bring about his desired end state of ‘single payer’ / government healthcare. He promised to enact an energy policy that would bankrupt coal and fossil fuels and drive electricity prices sky-high. He’s preached marxist class warfare throughout. And our nation was stupid enough to elect him to the Presidency.

Ha Ha. When we get down to a 1:1 ratio we’re really screwed. For example, historically there were 18 workers paying into the system for every Medicaid recipient — now there are only 2.5. We’re in big trouble.

cynccook on September 18, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Hey, isn’t it supposed to be racist or something to quote That F’n Guy, in context?

Probably too much wishful thinking and ascribing too much intelligence to think Romney’s folks might have “leaked” the 47% comment so they could follow up with this little nugget. Now that would be a Machiavellian stroke of genius, wouldn’t it?

IMO, October came early.

Obama needed something to distract from his massive failures in foreign policy last week and this moves the discussion into race and class warfare. And it only does that because the MSM has dropped any pretense of objectivity and all they will report on is these bland mostly true comments of Mitt Romney. I’m glad somebody had Obama speaking like any other commie in reserve to shake up the discussion.

ConservativePartyNow on September 18, 2012 at 5:42 PM

And we need new poverty immigrants to be on which side of the ledger? There is no way that new poverty immigrantion would require less “redistribution” because they can only drive down wages for workers, and you can argue, make the rich richer. Obama would have to admit that he favors policies that would require more redistribution, so it isn’t even a necessary evil from his perspective. It’s something desirable that you want to force the conditions to create more of.

Is that too complicated? There are certain questions that will destroy Obama right now.

portlandon on September 18, 2012 at 5:39 PM

The consequences.

Remember, democrats used to be “tax and spend” but realized people hate the “tax” part.

So now they are just “spend” and wait until deficits/debt are so high that people will have to succumb to tax increases. Too bad, for Dems, that even in places like CA, no one wants to pay the bill.

So, things that can’t continue won’t.

None of that is really new or telling is it?

One of his first acts as President was to seize Govt Motors and give it to the UAW. Stalin would have been wiping tears away in pride.

His administration orchestrated Fast and Furious to flood Mexico with American-purchased weapons so that he could attack the Second Amendment. He said as much to the anti-Constitution crowd at the Brady campaign (guess who those filthy bastards support?)

He refused to vote against a law that would essentially require to go out after a child from a botched abortion and kill him/her for daring to defy the “right” of abortion.

So, finding out that the author of Obamacare and Solyndra sees all property as the government’s is hardly a surprise. There is no such thing as individual success it is all about allowing a filthy rat-eared commie like Obama telling us what our “fair share” is and how much should be confiscated to endow the deadbeat mouth-breathing takers whose only work in the last four years has been to replace the Obama 2008 sticker on their vehicles with one of the 2012 variations.

Nobody hates poor people. I, no matter how poor I may be, have a moral obligation to work. I do not have any moral right, no matter how poor I may be, to anyone else’s money.

I have no right to Bill Gate’s money. If Bill decides he wants to give me some money, that is his choice to make – not the Government’s choice. By the same token, no one has a moral right to my money, no matter how much or little I have. Whatever I earn, is mine to keep, no matter how much or little. My only obligation is to earn it legally, and pay the tax due. While the government can tax my earnings, it has no moral right to use the taxing authority for the purpose of giving my money to someone else. I am not responsible for anyone else’s life circumstances. Everyone who is able to work, must work to provide for themselves, and their family. No one hates poor people.

IMO, the opposite is much more likely if the Romney campaign plays a smart series of moves. They need to show the shallowness of the Obama administration (question why he’s going on Letterman to yuck it up with a sexist pig instead of Nightline to talk about the ME). Wonder aloud about what exactly we are doing to our troops in Pakistan and how many more troops will be killed by the soldiers they are there to train so that these animals can keep order when NATO troops leave. Question what Obama is doing about the economy in light of the second time the US credit rating has been downgraded during his term- a second unprecedented mark of shame for the rat-eared bastard.

I could go on but you get the idea and my blood pressure will just go up if I were to spell out more of the case against giving the rat-eared bastard a second term.

Obama was awesome!

not for black people or white people or racist White Hispanic people.

Wow. Talk about shooting first and aiming later i.e marching out Ambassador Rice to every available Sunday political news outlet with the “spontaneous reaction” crap spin.

Just sad.

Odumbo (starting at 0:14)

I think that what we’re gonna have to do is somehow recessitate the notion that (uh) government action can be effective at all.

I’ve listened to it about eight times (Yes, I am now feeling a bit queasy.), and I hear “recessitate” every time.

LOL!

I’m I hearing it wrong? Am I mistaken about the existence of this “word”?
Harvard Law graduate?
