1998 audio: I believe in redistribution, says Obama

posted at 5:21 pm on September 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

Can’t hurt to remind low-information voters of this by having Drudge give it the red-font treatment, but … you guys already knew this, yes? The whole point of the Buffett Rule is that O wants a showy yet meaningless peg on which to hang his “the rich aren’t paying their fair share” argument. It would do next to nothing to reduce the deficit or help pull America out of its bottomless well of liabilities, but it’s a symbolic blow for redistribution and, hey, that’s good enough — especially when you’re running against a rich guy prone to saying stuff like this. (It also helps prepare the way for the more substantive battle over letting the Bush tax cuts lapse later this year.) Ace reminds me that this isn’t even the first clip of O talking about redistribution to make a splash during a presidential campaign: He said something similar in 2001, the audio of which appeared on Drudge’s site late in the 2008 race. In fact, there’s an even more famous example than that. As lefty Matt Yglesias tweeted earlier, doesn’t anyone remember Joe the Plumber?

“Of course not,” said Obama. “But what’s happened is that we end up – we’ve cut taxes a lot for folks like me who make a lot more than 250. We haven’t given a break to folks who make less, and as a consequence, the average wage and income for ordinary folks, the vast majority of Americans, has actually gone down over the last eight years. So all I want to do is – I’ve got a tax cut. The only thing that changes, is I’m gonna cut taxes a little bit more for the folks who are most in need and for the 5% of the folks who are doing very well – even though they’ve been working hard and I appreciate that – I just want to make sure they’re paying a little bit more in order to pay for those other tax cuts. Now, I respect the disagreement. I just want you to be clear – it’s not that I want to punish your success – I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you – that they’ve got a chance at success too.”…

Obama said, “My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. If you’ve got a plumbing business, you’re gonna be better off if you’re gonna be better off if you’ve got a whole bunch of customers who can afford to hire you, and right now everybody’s so pinched that business is bad for everybody and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

O’s never been terribly shy about admitting this, but it’s useful to remind voters of it while the media’s sputtering over what a grave insult the makers-versus-takers formulation in Romney’s “47 percent” comments is. Which, of course, is why the clip was leaked to Drudge.

It’s damn harder to be inspirational when you FINALLY are running a campaign where you have to stick around and defend your record instead of jumping to a campaign for higher office.

I came here as a political refugee from then Soviet Union. Penniless. Was 15 at the time and worked from Day 1, while attending high school, NEVER asking the government for anything and was more than happy to be allowed to move and work here.

BTW, as an LEGAL IMMIGRANT, who followed all the applicable USA laws governing LEGAL IMMIGRATION, I am more than appalled with how ILLEGALS are allowed entry and status by BREAKING USA LAWS just to get here.

If you are still not clear on the subject, Hussein is only re-using the redistribution doctrine so well developed by Stalin and Co. You know, the people who EXTERMINATED all those who didn’t want to be part of that “redistribution” idea.

We’re only repeating the process some 80 years later.

I saw his Cavuto interview on Fox. He was very effective. But they need to work this into ads running in the swing states.

They need to frame this as what kind of country do you want – a big government dependency country which bankrupts us all? Or a free country where financial opportunity and security exist for all?

In short, there is no free lunch; anyone who thinks something can be had for nothing is devoid of an understanding of reality.

The US became great because of freedom – not dependency. A governmment dependent nation is a failing nation. Unfortunately, half the adult populace in America doesn’t seem to understand these basic realities. Hopefully, the half that does will vote in large numbers this November, and save America from self-destruction.

his “the rich aren’t paying their fair share” argument.

Allah, it is not only the rich. Here is Obama from 3 May 1990:

“We’re going to reshape selfish, mean-spirited AmericaI’m not interested in the suburbs. The suburbs bore me. And I’m not interested in isolating myself. I feel good when I’m engaged in what I think are the core issues of the society, and those core issues to me are what’s happening to poor folks in this society.

Who lives in the suburbs? The Middle Class.

Scroll down and you can view the newspaper article entitled, “Harvard Student Tackles Racism At Core”:

http://predicthistunpredictpast.blogspot.com/2012/09/obama-were-going-to-reshape-selfish.html

In context, it appears that he meant “suburbs = white, poor = black,” but I don’t think that race even has to enter into the equation. He clearly disdains those that live in the suburbs and the people, who live there, are the Middle Class.

My new mantra when speaking to liberal friends is: A Commander in Chief who has skipped over half of his Presidential Daily Briefs, is neglecting his primary duty to protect our country and should not be re-elected.

So far the response I get is that they had no idea that Obama is skipping his Daily Intelligence Briefs. (Sadly, my liberal friends get their news from MSNBC and NPR.)

As more Americans find out about Obama’s dereliction of duty, his foreign policy poll numbers should fall off a cliff.

According to a recent study by the Government Accountability Institute, Mr. Obama has only attended 43.8 percent of his Presidential Daily Briefs in the first 1,225 days of his Administration.

clnurnberg on September 18, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Yep. As a U.S. Senator, Obama was a sponsor of a bill that would have imposed a United Nations-sponsored “global poverty tax” on the U.S. Barry wanted to take what we earn in the U.S., and have the UN re-distribute it to those it deemed more deserving. From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.

Of course, knowing the United Nations’ abysmal record on this type of thing, the money most likely would have ended up going into the Swiss and Cayman Island bank accounts of UN bureaucrats (with a sweet kickback to Barry cronies, of course).

Naturally, you heard nothing about this from the MSM when Barry was running for president in 2008. Our “elites” in the media didn’t want to scare all the bitter clinging rubes with actual evidence of what a One World Government communist Barry Hussein really is.

Back in the days when we had a President who actually cared about what was going on in the world, the PDB brief team left Agency Hqs no later than 0600 to arrive at the White House West Wing at before 0700. Often they left earlier, as the PDB normally went to the “printers” no later than 0500. Other “teams” arrived at State and DoD at about the same time, so that all principals could be briefed on the overnight happenings and get indications and warnings about possible threats before breakfast, and before the Washington media was even getting out of their pajamas.

1015…that’s pretty late in the day for a briefing on overnight developments and indications and warnings.

Indicative of a president who just doesn’t care about anything but himself.

Probably include the PDB in yesterday’s schedule to somehow show the rest of the world that he is on top of things, considering how many PDB briefs he has skipped intentionally over the years. Had indications and warnings on Libya, Egypt and elsewhere been included in this past week’s PDB’s, Obama probably never donated the time to get briefed, leaving that sort of thing to lower level personnel who might have been present in the West Wing at the time.

It appearing on the schedule from yesterday looks like CYA more than anything else.

Even with haircuts on AF-1, Monica, and rambling on for an hour about nothing every time he saw a mike, Clinton managed to show up more often than that.

What does he do all day? A year or so ago, there was a report he sat in front of the TV all day watching sports. I considered the report dubious. With these schedules, I’m now inclined to believe it.

No wonder The One wants to deep-six the work requirement for welfare. He hasn’t got a “work ethic” himself.

Agreed!

I am working hard to convert as many people as possible to being Romney voters!

Early voting starts next week in several states, so it is pedal to the metal time!

The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

I’ve noticed something VERY disturbing about this video. No, it ‘s not the content – it’s that when I viewed it when Drudge first posted it, it
had 313 views on YouTube, and just as of this moment at 9:00pm CST (HOURS later)it STILL has only 313 views!!!! However, it has almost 2,300 thumbs up and almost 1,060 thumbs down. HOW IN THE HECK CAN THIS BE????

I mean, I know Google/YouTube are in O’s pocket, but why is nobody calling them on this? This is OBSCENE!

It is a confession. That is information that can arm you when confronting the enemy.

IIRC, during the last campaign Mooch talked about some people giving up their piece of the pie so others could have more. Both of them are rabid redistributionists.

See, right there is the problem with the Obamas. Neither one of them understands our economic system–they think it is a zero-sum game, and if the rich prosper it simply has to be at the expense of the poor.

Romney wants to grow the pie. He knows that the competition of a healthy capitalist system provides more for everyone.

I don’t care whether he states it elegantly or inelegantly, Mitt has got to drive home that message. A rising tide really does lift all boats.

And redistribution will just end up drowning all of us.

We knew this before though.

The best part is that you can hear him knocking the Chicago Public School system… which he criticizes and then would throw money at via Ayers and the Woods Foundation. Apparently high hopes, leftist dreams, and all the good feeling in the world can’t fix a dysfunctional government system.

Which is why Rahmbo can go after the CPS and not fear Obama stabbing him in the back over it. That and the money just plain running out, of course. Once at the edge of the bottomless pit even a leftist can have qualms about stepping out into the void they have helped to create. But its a lot easier to dig in your heels when you aren’t being pushed from behind to jump.
