Videos: “You didn’t build that,” revisited

posted at 2:41 pm on September 17, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

While Democrats have insisted that Republicans ‘built their entire convention around something the president never actually said’ and whatnot, there were certainly enough entrepreneurial, hardworking, small-business-owning Americans who took umbrage with President Obama’s candid comment as a startlingly frank admission of his worldview to have the White House scrambling to redefine the president’s remarks. Too little, too late, though — finally, Obama’s mere words were really resonating with people again, but in all the wrong ways.

Two videos, the first a fun new remix from Hugh Atkin:

And the second, a simple breakdown from Mark Matson: “Yes, but it’s important to destroy their sense of individualism, while they’re still young!”

Obama photobomber gets wee-wee’d up — literally
http://twitchy.com/2012/09/17/obama-photobomber-gets-wee-weed-up-literally/

Well, it took a couple of days, but we’ve finally determined what Valerie Jarrett was thinking when she tweeted out the letter “P.” At a campaign event in Cincinnati this morning, President Obama really got his audience’s enthusiasm flowing. One man apparently drank in a little more of Obama’s greatness than everyone else, and, unable to contain himself any longer, he snuck off to relieve some pent-up pressure, killing some grass in the process.

Galt2009 on September 17, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Wow. Mr. Atkin deserves a medal for having to watch that much of Obama to get the appropriate clips. Definitely worth a watch. Thanks for posting it, Erika.

That second ad is awesome. It could be shorter.

The first ad makes Obama seem cool.

Pretty good.

Funny thing is, that Obama’s remarks, in full context are even more damning than that single phrase as they betrayed his collectivist core.

AZfederalist on September 17, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Whoever built it, Barry broke it.

Limerick on September 17, 2012 at 2:53 PM

I suspect MC Hammer will be offering a cease and desist letter to the creator of the first video in a few days. Or tell them to remove the musical track.

ButterflyDragon on September 17, 2012 at 2:53 PM

As to the 2nd, people are so stupid that it needs to be shortened and also needs Obama’s “you didn’t build that” included up front.

Hell, within 48 hours, the MSM will distort this into an Obama commercial if it is not laid out.

matthew8787 on September 17, 2012 at 2:53 PM

Unfortunately, the Commie filth who voted for him, will do so, again – under the pretense that The Commie is dead-on.

People who need and want the State to nurture them, and who are lovingly and adoringly prepared to surrender their liberty, in return, haven’t built a damn thing.

They simply can’t identify with anything in opposition to The Commie’s statement.

OhEssYouCowboys on September 17, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Problem is that Obama morons will simply hear the music and like it. They ain’t big on substance.
Hell, most probably think it’s a pro-Obama video.

What if we took that post it note on the gas pump and started making Post-it notes as to what Obama has done and used Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.???

We could get the message out in a viral way bypassing the ineffective Romney campaign.

Maybe someone has already done it?

Just a way we COULD ALL HELP.

#postitnotes4america or something like that and maybe we could hashtag #ohio #virginia etc on Instagram!!

The first video makes “You didn’t build that” seem cool, like everyone should agree with it.
Nothing negative in it.
In fact, by taking everything out of context to build the video, they prove Obama’s point that it was taken out of context.
I think Hot Air just got suckered.

So, you’re saying you Pity Da Fool!

Christien on September 17, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Limerick,

I don’t think that’s how it will play out in the debates. Romney can acknowledge the fact that Osama is gone, and then praise Seal Team Six and remind everyone how Bush’s interrogations at Gitmo led to gaining information that manifested in the assault on the compound in Pakistan.

And for good measure he can point out the Obama administration never closed Gitmo, and ask Obama why he never closed it.

I think Obama has set his own trap.

Seriously? Then he’s making it for idiots. As someone who is informed and knows where a lot of those bites came from and think that the presidency is where serious people do serious work and shouldn’t be dancing and slow jamming, I find Obama’s behavior offensive rather than “cool”.

But yeah, I can see how the reality show crowd would think it’s cool.

Thanks for the info. Good to know. Also good to be reminded that anything, even something as clear as what Obama is about can be molded into something totally different.

kim roy on September 17, 2012 at 3:47 PM

Obama: You didn’t build that. Someone else made that happen. Somebody invested in roads and bridges…

Business owner: But…but…without bridges or roads, how did the business that made the road or bridge create itself?

The point being that Hot Air thinks this Obama video is making fun of Obama, but it is actually supporting Obama by showing that if you take everything out of context you can even make a “fun new remix” (as Hot Air calls it) that even has Hot Air confused and pushing the liberal’s message for them: i.e. Obama’s quote “you didn’t build that” was taken out of context.

If any of you deal with our president’s people, can you tell them we just think he has done a lousy job? Nothing personal.

And ask them not to panic and get weird. Just follow their top people.

I am honorable so I will not give details of ads I reviewed to anyone.

But 12 Chinese girls?

They are getting weird.

This is the kind of thing that the Romney campaign should be saturating the airwaves with. catchy and effective – Mitt needs to buy the rights to this ASAP!!!

albill on September 17, 2012 at 4:05 PM

Which is fine for those that don’t pay attention. They will have no idea where those clips are from and what the context of.

However. We have seen the clips before in full context and have discussed them. We know where they came from and most of us have watched the WHOLE clip where “you didn’t build that” was said.

It’s fine for us. We know he’s a feckless celeb.

But, to agree with your point, the low info voter will not have a clue, will continue not to have a clue and will think that Obama is cool.

I don’t think the idea of “context” is being made in this video. There are too many rapid cuts to make the point strongly. If, on the other hand, the maker were to make it a sound bite clip, even limiting it to more than three words at a time, then it would have been more effective. As it was, there were significant portions were the words were *too* clipped to hear. Who really associates “taken out of context” with single words?

For us it’s fine and a good laugh and a reminder of the preciseness of good propaganda. I doubt the target audience will get it, personally. I could be wrong.

albill on September 17, 2012 at 3:29 PM

Yep.

At the 20 second mark, Fox’s Brett Baier says “so we wanted to go back and play the entire segment” . . . . Problem is, the video plays next the shortened remark of Obama in a light most favorable to him:

“Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you have a business, you didn’t build that.”

BigAlSouth on September 17, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Obama repeated himself, but led in with a different sentence. So every time Dems say he was taken out of context, they only show one version, never the whole thing. When you watch the whole things, it’s devastating.

As to the 1st video, it seemed like he was trying to defend Obama, but failed. I’m not sure he understands why people were upset over the comment in the first place.

The second one was funny.
