Romney: Obama’s 47% of the electorate is dependent on government

posted at 7:34 pm on September 17, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mother Jones and Ace, watch this now if you haven’t seen it elsewhere because political media will be having 20 heart attacks about it tomorrow and you’ll want to be up to speed. This was recorded awhile back at a fundraiser, just like Obama’s infamous “bitter/clinger” comments in 2008. Remember how big that blew up? That’s how we ended up with President McCain.

The dirty little secret of most “controversial” political statements is that voters pay them little mind, especially when they’re preoccupied with bread-and-butter issues. The GOP spent three days in Tampa hammering Obama for the “you didn’t build that” line and a fat lot of good it did them in vaulting Romney past O in the polls. Then again, the GOP didn’t have a media megaphone like the one that’s going to be amplifying this for the rest of the week. The money quote:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…

“And I mean the president starts off with 48, 49 … he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. So he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to convince the five to ten percent in the center that are independents that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not.”

Certainly, the Obama campaign’s never done anything to tout the sort of cradle-to-grave dependency that Romney describes here. I think David French’s recent post about the “bookends” that compose the modern liberal coalition is closer to the mark than Romney’s familiar makers-and-takers formulation here, but he was at a fundraiser and tossing red meat and I guess wanted it to be as red as possible. As for his claim that 47 percent pay no income tax, it’s true but carries lots of caveats. Ramesh Ponnuru wrote an insightful piece about last year; this new article from National Journal is worth reading too. Two political difficulties here. One: While some Obama supporters may not pay federal income tax, they still pay federal payroll tax and may well pay state and city taxes. They do contribute something to government. Two: A lot of pro-Republican working-class voters pay no income tax due to the Earned Income Tax Credit, and a lot of pro-Republican seniors pay no income tax because most or all of their income is Social Security. Not sure how either of those groups will react to Romney’s critique of O’s fans, but my hunch is that Ben Domenech’s right in believing that no one really thinks they’re part of the 47 percent. Everyone thinks they’re a “maker,” not a “taker,” due to whatever little tax they pay, so when Mitt lays into freeloaders, even people who pay no income tax think he’s talking about someone else. It’s sort of the flip side of senior citizens saying that America needs small government while telling politicians “Hands off my Medicare.” I doubt it’ll end up hurting Romney badly, but the media will do its level best. Buckle up!

That’s the first video. The second video is of Romney joking that he’d have a better chance at being elected if he was Latino, which is almost certainly true.

Update: Damage control from Romney’s campaign:

Mitt Romney wants to help all Americans struggling in the Obama economy. As the governor has made clear all year, he is concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work. Mitt Romney’s plan creates 12 million new jobs in four years, grows the economy and moves Americans off of government dependency and into jobs.

It’s fine. Whatever damage these comments could do to Romney will be offset by his announcement of his support for Amnesty today.

This will be interesting to watch because liberals don’t really dispute the premise here. They really do believe that they are entitled to healthcare, food, etc. They aren’t shy about expressing their support for government dependence. Their whole convention focused on this point. “Government is the only thing we all belong to”.

Meanwhile Romney perfectly expresses the frustration that motivates conservatives right now. I think their reply statement hits it on the head. We’re concerned about the number of people dependent on the government.

…who actually is Romney’s base? Was Boehner right? Mormons and a few family members?

Dear Hot Air:

Thank you for your insightful critique of Romney’s comments; it is better than anything I can get over at Huffpo! Joe Scarborough will probably be frothing at the mouth in a jealous snit when he reads it.

Romney is correct. A highly significant percentage of the American electorate, almost 50% (go ahead, quibble about the exact number) is dependent on the Federal government and will not respond to Romney’s/the Republican’s message. This includes, but is not limited to, the people who pay no income tax; the people who work for the government, or for entities dependent on government financing; women who want the government to force insurers to pay for their abortions/birth control; non-traditional couples who want the goverment to force legal and religious recognition of their “marriages”; students who want free money for college, or who want their loans forgiven; people who want free health care; people who want government support for job/wage/benefit extortion (unions); and more. If we add all this up and add the fact that Obama will keep what little defense money is left flowing to swing states like Virginia, and the number goes over 50%.

What about this don’t you understand?

I hope the clogged artery media gins this up big time. It’s time that people realize that almost half of their number pay no income taxes at all. Let the Obama mouthpieces go to town on this, it will only increase the enthusiasm level of the rest of us and the fiscally conservative indies to vote.

Takers are, by definition, sitter-outers or they wouldn’t be on the dole as it is. But, I’ll bet that the low-info voters, mainly the hard-working indies, haven’t yet focused on the fact that about half the people they see every day are living off of their wallets.

Team Romney should not demure or wilt from this, but should go on offense about it. There are still more makers than takers, though not for long at all if Obama gets re-elected.

If you think there aren’t, you’re deluding yourself. I doubt that this video will really change anybody’s mind so it won’t have much of a negative affect. It’ll just provide a few days of libturd media rage until they find something else to scream and cry and kick their feet about. Hopefully it riles up the apathetics in the middle and on the right to get out and give it to the deadbeats with the in-your-face vote.

But on the other hand, I do not see how this helps him win, or helps America move in the right direction.

Maybe he will grow a pair and fight back, and this will get a strong conversation going where he can champion fairness that no new debt would bring. I do not see that happening.

Hmm…maybe I was wrong. Maybe Obama will be up 10-15 in the polls BEFORE the last debate is over.

What a dumb string of statements. Yes, acurate and yet somehow delievered in the worst way possible…as if he doesn’t understand the plight of the average American.

newtopia on September 17, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Another lost day: Obama should be the issue, not Romney’s stupid statement.

CNN is having a field day with this, already twisting to include SS recipients as part of the 47 percent.

matthew8787 on September 17, 2012 at 8:08 PM

I guess everyone at the airports are going to listen to this :)

Conservative4ev on September 17, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Let us not forget that many of the forty seven percent are truly disabled and elderly.
Let us not forget how the roles have expanded through the roof.
Romney needs to clarify, never back down.
Could be a worthy moment. We all talk about this defining election. Get the dirty laundry out there.

seesalrun2 on September 17, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Daaaang, Mitt. Didn’t know you had it in you. Now don’t apologize, and say this to Obama’s face at the debate.

Mr. Wednesday Night on September 17, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Bye bye Mitt! Your campaign is done.

So you have Barry’s people infiltrating fundraisers as spies.

What Romney said was true, but I am sure the MSM will be clutching their pearl necklaces and having a hissy fit, the male journalists at least.

changer1701 on September 17, 2012 at 8:10 PM

I’m of mind that nothing anyone drags out is going to matter come election day. People’s minds are already made up. Barring some major catastrophe the campaigning is really just noise at this point.

HotAirian on September 17, 2012 at 8:11 PM

So what’s the problem, again? Considering the rate at which Obama has driven people to unemployment, welfare and SSI, Romney has a point.

Philly on September 17, 2012 at 8:11 PM

damn it TAFJ- I have that damn song in my head now!

HAL sing it already.

As part of the 53% that pays for your as$ I command you.

Totally Right obama does more. What with those expensive vacations to Spain and NYC date nights..

wargamer6 on September 17, 2012 at 8:11 PM

I kinda agree with Mitt. In fact, when the MSM goes hog wild with this, I think most Americans will look around and agree with Mitt.

Yahoo already has four headlines in their Politics section about these vids. They’ll be top news before too long.

changer1701 on September 17, 2012 at 8:09 PM

I agree with all the headlines they sound great :)

Conservative4ev on September 17, 2012 at 8:12 PM

Uhm, what’s the problem here?

SouthernGent on September 17, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Exactly.

jaime on September 17, 2012 at 8:06 PM

The problem is that just like people don’t like being called bitter, people also don’t like being told they don’t take any personal responsibility. People definitely don’t like being told they take no personal responsibility from a rich guy. People definitely don’t like being told that a potential president feels that “[his] job is not to worry about those people.”

Again, it’s not going to convince people that weren’t going to vote for Obama to vote for him. But imagine this playing over and over in November. You guys keep saying that the polls are wrong because Dems aren’t going to come out in 2008 numbers. Romney is saying things that will ensure they do.

HotAirLib on September 17, 2012 at 8:05 PM

As a professional welfare recipient, you were going to vote for Romney, until he put you in your place?

Probably not, huh? I bet “we” will pull a few off that 47% who really do want to take personal responsibility, before “you” pull off some of that 53% by convincing them that personal responsibility is antiquated.

BruthaMan on September 17, 2012 at 8:12 PM

So, being truthful is now a bad thing for a politician?

Who woulda thunk it?

ButterflyDragon on September 17, 2012 at 8:12 PM

What did he say that was not true?

To point out that slacker vote is not really worth trying to get because they are addicted to being subsidized by others is just a fact. This is not to say that all those people are not working..many are but are being allowed a pass because of the tax system. That said, many are happy slackers who play the system. It is unlikely that either of these groups would vote for someone demanding everyone have at least some skin in the game.

The best strategy for Romney is to motivate the people who usually sit elections out because of indifference. I believe there IS a silent majority out there and the bulk of them have conservative values.

Dear Hot Air:

Thank you for your insightful critique of Romney’s comments; it is better than anything I can get over at Huffpo! Joe Scarborough will probably be frothing at the mouth in a jealous snit when he reads it.

Mr. Arkadin on September 17, 2012 at 8:00 PM

You guys are ridiculous. AP is agreeing with you and even that’s not enough. He forgot to lather up Romney’s left buttocks, so he’s clearly in league with DailyKos.

Hope Team Romney realizes that this 47% things has us more excited than anything else in weeks. This is a BASE election, donchaknow.

re: hispanic immigration, legal and not

Amazing how I never see a hispanic panhandler – mendicant on a street corner. Can’t blame the illegals among them for taking the handouts we force on them – it’s not enriching those that I know – just allows them to send more home. They’d be just as productive without. Pity we can’t have open borders and a welfare state – they are some of the hardest working folks I’ve met.
