Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on September 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Several Western embassies in the Middle East and Africa in flames.  An American ambassador dies in the line of duty, the first time in 33 years that’s happened.  What does the leader of the free world do?  Travel to … Las Vegas:

President Barack Obama’s Wednesday afternoon speech in Las Vegas is being delayed by about 45 minutes, according to the White House.

Obama had been scheduled to speak at 5:25 p.m. at a campaign rally at the Cashman Center in downtown Las Vegas. He will now deliver his speech at 6:10 p.m., according to an updated schedule released Wednesday morning.

The president was forced to alter his schedule to comment on a Tuesday attack on the American Embassy in Libya that killed four people, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, the White House Press Office said.

Erick Erickson makes the obvious argument about media bias:

This is an OOTD on another level, too.  Incumbent presidents have an advantage in optics — the White House.  Forget for the moment that proper leadership called for the head of state to be seen back in the Oval Office and handling the situation.  That’s exactly the kind of image his campaign should be projecting, too.  Instead, fundraising was a higher priority for the campaign than either providing an example of leadership, or even the appearance of leadership.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

How he behaved when he got there took it even further. I guess we should be thankful for small favors though. With the sycophantic press coverage he received, he’d have come out of this with (fake) higher poll numbers if he’d been caught naked playing pool ala Prince Harry.

Obama needed to RR to get over the trauma of Mitt Romney being critical of that stupid embassy statement.

Had George Bush gone to Vegas for a fundraiser on a day like today, the nat’l political press would be in an uproar.

Uproar is an understatement of how the media would be reacting to Obama’s “commitments”, had this been GW. The liberal media, (and their pundits), would be calling for Bush’s resignation. Of course, if we checked with Susan Rice, she would tell us this is “a spontaneous reaction” by overtly concerned citizens.

The electorate apparently doesn’t care about such things. If it did, Obama’s poll numbers would be in the tank. Nothing that Obama says or does is going to prevent the vast majority of his supporters from voting for him. As far as they’re concerned, fretting over Vegas is just Repub. and conservative blathering. Hey, just being honest.

The White House and Press Create a Fairy Tale Version of History
****************************************************************

When I was a kid, a popular TV show (and earlier a radio one) was You Are There, the theme of which was bringing the viewer into re-enacted historic events to better learn about them.

Watching the Middle East doings this week with any degree of care, news consumers can see quite clearly how mendacious officials, media and our enemies have created a false storyline about the uprisings in Cairo and Libya which, among other things have resulted in the murder of an Ambassador Chris Stevens and three of his aides, Glen Doherty, Sean Smith and Tyrone Woods and the loss of very important security information in Libya . (See this link is to the UK’s Daily Mail because the US press coverage has come nowhere near as detailed or accurate as this. The attacks didn’t even make it to the front page of the New York Times.)

These incidents mark the start of a serious further destabilization of a strategically significant part of the world. By Friday, other Western Embassies had been attacked in the Sudan, there was a bomb threat by Al Qaeda at the University of Texas and the US Embassy in Tunisia was being sacked. In fact, a Google map of the entire world shows how extensive the demonstrations are, many of which haven’t been reported here.

Assuming you have a life and haven’t been able to keep track minute by minute of this re-writing of history, here is what’s going on behind the shadow puppet show screen.

Myth No 1: This Administration has strengthened our alliances and improved national security.

Obama jettisoned Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak and gave aid to the Libyan rebels who deposed Moammar Gaddafi, acts entirely of his own doing, done without Congressional consent or bipartisan agreement. Mubarak, for all his faults, could be relied upon to keep out Embassy from being overrun and Gaddafi had been cooperating with us since the invasion of Iraq.

Obama okayed the killing of Osama bin Laden, but was so eager to get the credit for it that he crowed about it immediately and often, before we had an opportunity to act on the intelligence information about existing Al Qaeda operations around the world.

And he was certain these acts had strengthened our national security:

Here are Obama’s words in his Sept. 8, 2012 address [emphasis supplied]:

“Instead of pulling back from the world, we’ve strengthened our alliances while improving our security here at home. As Americans, we refuse to live in fear. Today, a new tower rises above the New York skyline. And our country is stronger, safer and more respected in the world.

“Instead of turning on each other, we’ve resisted the temptation to give in to mistrust and suspicion. I have always said that America is at war with al Qaeda and its affiliates – and we will never be at war with Islam or any other religion. We are the United States of America. Our freedom and diversity make us unique, and they will always be central to who we are as a nation.”

Here is the reality, from Jonathan S. Tobin of Commentary

Well, this Ambassador was a career civil servant not an Obama appointee, so it’s not like he was a valued campaign bundler or anything. Not like one of the plum ambassador jobs that presidents hand to their favored cronies. Couple minutes of silence and move on to the next campaign event.

Pretty despicable.

Hat tip to a comment I read on AT. The empty chair has gone through his whole life BSing to get what he wanted, and now he can’t under stand why it’s not working. If he had cancelled the Vegas trip and stayed in the WH for the optics, we’d still call it for what it was. I live in solid blue New York, and so far, I’ve seen ONE ad, and it was Obama’s.

And I was thrilled to see it, too, since it means 1). he feels it’s necessary to remind solid blue New Yorkers to vote for him, and 2). it means there’s that much less money he’s got to convince undecided voters in swing states.

Maddie on September 17, 2012 at 9:51 AM

It looks like the actions of a man who realizes he is in over his head.
One who expects the MSM to paint a quick dash to Vegas as well-deserved rest for the weary and continue to run interference for him while there.

TimBuk3 on September 17, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Who will know that Obama went to Vegas on the day our diplomats were brutally murdered? That he misses half his intel meetings. The MSMedia won’t report it.
The left doesn’t care that Obama has zero integrity.
Low information voters are too lazy to notice or don’t want to know what a creep we have in the WH.
I’m starting to think Independents have their heads in the sand too.
So frustrating.

bailey24 on September 17, 2012 at 10:04 AM

Obama’s JOB isn’t to campaign for relection.

He’s been hired to do a job and that job involves protecting the U.S and our interests, foreign and domestic.

Obama, on the other hand, as with many Liberals, are of the opinion that Obama’s duties (not “job”, which they seem to often feel uncomfortable mentioning) of his “celebrity” are to look and sound pretty and make a big audience applaud loudly. And to get as much money in as many bundles as possible, his “box office” haul.

The DNC had a lot of people cheering “Obama, Obama, Obama…” while he RNC had many cheering “USA, USA, USA…”: telling difference there.

Mr. Obama as president has many coming to a greater appreciation of Mr. Bush as president.

You can argue with Mr. Bush’s policies, you can second-guess his decisions, you can criticize his political instincts, but when in office Mr. Bush comported himself presidentially. He was punctual. He took hard questions. He made tough calls. And he put in a full day.

He didn’t apologize for America in the world. He didn’t overstate his own accomplishments. He didn’t turn the White House into a fundraising motel. And he didn’t blame everyone but himself.
