Obama: I can “walk the walk” on China

posted at 4:01 pm on September 17, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Mitt Romney leveled some pretty heavy swings at President Obama’s China-related policies on the campaign trail last week, and it appears that the Obama campaign is ready to try and fire back (at least, fire back a bit more seriously than with the defense they tried to scrape together last week, heh). Via The Hill:

Obama is adding the new talking point to his campaign stump speech by touting the administration’s newly filed trade enforcement case against China. …

“And my experience has been waking up every single day doing everything I can to give American workers a fair shot in the global economy. When other countries don’t play by the rules, we’ve done something about it.”

The Obama administration on Monday filed a new World Trade Organization suit charging China provided illegal subsidies encouraging companies to ship auto parts manufacturing jobs overseas. Obama said this action directly affects American workers, including the many factory workers who vote in Ohio. …

The Obama administration’s trade case against China argues Beijing provided at least $1 billion in subsidies from 2009 through 2011, giving its manufacturers an advantage over U.S. competitors.

(Sidebar: While I am never against calling out a communist regime for their unfair trade practices and their central planning, I would merely like to point out that we’re guilty of a good bit of that type of behavior ourselves — and especially under the Obama administration. We’re perfectly familiar with the domestic-subsidy game as well as protectionism; just sayin’, President Obama put up a more than 30 percent tariff on solar panels imported from China in order to cushion all of those yet-to-materialize green manufacturing jobs, and if you really want to encourage innovation and economic growth, that type of stuff is never good — even when it’s supposed to offset stuff that they other guy’s done, it’s a slippery slope.)

Be that as it may, President Obama did issue a campaign-promise to label China a currency manipulator (he has yet to do so), and disparaged President Bush for running up so much debt and subsequently borrowing from China, limiting our capacity to stand tough on their trade policies. Via BuzzFeed:

So then, President Obama, about all of those trillion-dollar deficits…?

Rebar on September 17, 2012 at 4:18 PM

China has continued to manipulate its currency to gain a trade advantage and no one mentions here that we carry a huge trade deficit with China. We import far more of their products than we export to them.

Rather than slapping a tariff on those items manufactured here which Obama wishes to protect per his own agenda, we should be renegotiating our entire trade agreement with China and seeing that we lose that huge trade deficit we’re carrying.

While Obama has signed three trade agreements while he’s been in office, China has signed 15 and is currently negotiating 20 more.

If we renegotiated with China for a more favorable and lucrative trade agreement, and actively pursued more trade agreements globally, we would become something that the Obama administration is incapable of recognizing. Competitive.

Then we wouldn’t need to borrow more money from… China.

Obama is adding the new talking point to his campaign stump speech by touting the administration’s newly filed trade enforcement case against China.

This is why Obama (and the MSM) wants specifics about Mitt’s plans.

Obama will cherry pick them as his own.

This is how we ended up with ObamaCare (vs Hillary).

Mitt should be quiet about specifics as long as possible.

Walk the walk:

China is one of the biggest economies in the world and grew at more than 9 percent over the last year. It also has loaned more than $1 trillion to the U.S. to fund its deficit-spending.

But at the same time, the U.S. sends foreign aid to China, which lawmakers of all stripes say is just plain nuts.

“Why in the world would we be borrowing money and then turn around and giving it back to the countries that we’re borrowing it from?” Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said. “If they have enough of a surplus to loan us money, they have enough of a surplus to take care of their own needs.”

Indeed.

What exactly is anyone going to do on China? Obama is engaging in a cheap song and dance here to deflect criticism but nothing is going to come of it. China produces ‘stuff’ and we need that ‘stuff’. We keep shipping factories overseas to Malaysia, Mexico, and China and shipping the products back for sale. Until that changes there will continue to be a large trade deficit, and we will keep trying to borrow money from them to pay for domestic spending.

Currency manipulation can also be used to pay off debt with inflated dollars, such as those currently being churned out by our printing presses. I doubt that will make China receptive to negotiations.

a capella on September 17, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Obama using the phrase “…walk the walk…” is reminiscent of his use of when he stormed out of negotiations for ‘The Grand Bargain’ with the GOP in a huff and said to Eric Cantor “Don’t call my bluff, Eric.” which of course, told all and sundry that he was, in fact, bluffing.

If Obama can “…walk the walk…” as he claims, it begs the question.

Everything revolves around Obama and his schedule and mass protests in the Middle East weren’t going to keep him from doing what many Americans did this weekend:

Amy Gardner @AmyEGardner

President Obama didn’t watch SNL season opener this weekend; watched a lot of football, per Josh Earnest on AF1 gaggle.

Hm. Did you note in that little nugget that 29% were missing? Where those the ones that cussed out the pollster for being a moron?

So I go and look.

Let’s finish that tweet:

- Nearly half (45%) approve of Obama’s handling of the recent attacks on U.S. embassies and the killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya; 36% disapprove of Obama’s handling of this situation.

- In contrast, only about a quarter (26%) of those who have tracked news on turmoil in the Middle East approve of Romney’s comments on the situation; nearly half (48%) disapprove.

One thing that was interesting, though, and am not going to repost the entire post, is that those that actually pay attention were disapproving of how Obama handled it.

Samples were of adults. Nothing about whether they vote and was (rounded): D32/R27/I31. It appeared to have a large MOE. And I know it doesn’t add up. Not sure why. Perhaps someone else can figure that out.

Nice tweet. And this is the guy who is trotted out as the “unbiased” one. SIGH.

kim roy on September 17, 2012 at 4:53 PM

I should note that those who pay attention to the ME in general were disapproving of Obama, not just this story. I didn’t make the distinction. The article is worth reading if only to see is parceled out to us if we don’t go look ourselves.
