Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on September 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

Obama tried to influence Israeli voters by snubbing Netanyahu’s request for a meeting later this month, so here comes Bibi to return the favor. He’ll make his case on Iran directly to an American audience this morning on “Meet the Press.” I wonder if that’s been planned for weeks or if it was something hastily arranged, partly in frustration at O’s refusal to set any “red lines” for Iran’s nuke program and partly to capitalize on American anger over the embassy attacks this week. The idea that Islamic fundamentalists maybe shouldn’t be allowed to have nuclear weapons will have new resonance today for any American who’s been in a news coma since, oh, say, late September 2001. And believe me, they’re out there.

Here’s the line-up via the LA Times. Not sure why there’s no listing for “This Week,” but according to ABC’s website, they’ll have Susan Rice on as the main guest and Liz Cheney and Wes Clark, among others, on the panel to debate the Foreign-Policy President’s record.

State of the Union With Candy Crowley The Democratic agenda; 2012 Campaigns: Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco)…

Face the Nation Embassy attack in Libya and 2012 election: Sen. John Mccain (R-Ariz.). Events in Middle East: Richard Haass, Council on Foreign Relations; Martin Indyk, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel. Panel: Bobby Ghosh, Time; David Sanger, New York Times; John Dickerson; Margaret Brennan.

Meet the Press Israel and Iran; U.S.-Israeli relationship: Benjamin Netanyahu Prime Minister of Israel. Libya; anti-American protests overseas: Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Foreign policy and the 2012 campaign: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.); Rep. Peter King (R-NY); Bob Woodward; Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic; Andrea Mitchell.

This Week With George Stephanopoulos

Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace Events in Libya and Egypt: Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.). George and Trish Vradenburg, U.S. Against Alzheimer’s. Panel: Brit Hume; Liz Marlantes; the Christian Science Monitor; Bill Kristol; Jeff Zeleny.

No red lines is a strategy designed to insure that Iran goes nuclear. Clinton and Obama cannot be stupid enough, or naive enough, to think otherwise.

Well that sucks..the only person on that panel I can stomach is Brit Hume. Liz Marlantes will no doubt wax indignant at the nerve of Mitt Romney stepping on the president’s message and inserting himself in the national debate..after all..who does he think he is? The GOP candidate for President?

More seriously, is McCain the only Republican available for these shows? This is 2008 all over again.

They’re out there alright, by the millions, but they haven’t been in a news coma since 9/11. They’ve been in an MSM-induced state of hypnosis. The MSM has convinced them that the Democrats’ altered reality — where good is bad, false is true, weakness is strength, and a feckless, dishonest and massively incompetent president is the embodiment of every classic American virtue — is actual reality.

We need to find a way to snap them out of their trance before November, or we’re all doomed.

AZCoyote on September 16, 2012 at 8:30 AM

We will know the contest is engaged when White House Senior Advisor David M. Axelrod is sent out to follow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to undo damage.

The card the Dems have is that the PM went to school with the mad mormon who is bent on raising taxes on the middle class while his right wing terrorist thugs remain something Homeland Security is keeping under close watch.

Why this administration was prepared years ago for those insane right wing returning vets with their Tim McVey bios and gun collections. The ship of state was set to turn to collect the flowers of peace from the Islamic peoples until that wretched video appeared. The open hand was working!

If they weren’t so distracted with the real terror threat from machine gun toting tea partiers and spitting protesters who got international headlines, they may have had guards in the Mideast Embassies.

I saw two Special Reports in a row with two different brunette liberal reporters, one from AP, I forget the other. Neither was Marlantes or Liasson. Anyway, Dr. K, who’s wheelchair-bound, almost couldn’t stay in his chair when the brunettes started criticizing Romney and blaming the movie for the Middle East violence. Even Baier had a hard time not slamming them.

My money is on Hume laying down the hammer on the two liberals today. Too bad Fox couldn’t get Liz Cheney.

My greatest fear is that it would take a bright flash and mushroom cloud to wake these people up, and that many of them would then cry even louder for appeasement and see Obama as their emissary to pay the danegeld. He’s already capitulating wrt to the video which his admin and his media allies have deemed responsible for the actions of savages, radicals and terrorists deaths of an American Ambassador and security personnel.

That’s why as much as I would have liked Israel to feel they don’t have to act alone, I can’t imagine how much faith they have in the current American government to truly support them before they suffer an attack of nuclear proportions.

Slade73 on September 16, 2012 at 8:46 AM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Iran’s leaders were guided by “unbelievable fanaticism” and warned American policymakers that containment would not work against a nuclear-armed Tehran.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” to air on Sunday, Netanyahu dismissed suggestions that a nuclear Iran would behave as the Soviet Union did during the Cold War.

“I think Iran is very different. They put their zealotry above their survival,” said Netanyahu.

“I wouldn’t rely on their rationality,” he continued. “Since the advent of nuclear weapons, you have countries that had access to nuclear weapons who always made a careful calculation of cost and benefit. But Iran is guided by a leadership with an unbelievable fanaticism.”

“It’s the same fanaticism that you see storming your embassies today,” Netanyahu added, in reference to the wave of violent protests rocking American embassies in the Muslim world. “You want these fanatics to have nuclear weapons?” Video

I feel so terrible for Netanyahu. He knows he is being slowly strangled and left for dead by the U.S. President, and there is nothing he can do until there is a new President.

And if there isn’t a new President, he will be the last Prime Minister of Israel. The day after Obama is reelected, Egypt will renounce its peace treaty with Israel, Iran will announce it has a nuclear weapon, and the terms of Israel’s surrender will be clear: all of the West Bank and all of Jerusalem, and a right of return for all so-called Palestinians who left in 1948. And Obama will simply say Egypt is not our ally (did you REALLY think this was a flub?) over whom we have no control, and our people are tired of war and will not go to war to save territory that Israel is not entitled to.

Now do you understand why Jerusalem was removed from the Democratic platform?? It isn’t going to be Israel’s capital much longer.

And I am not sure Romney cam even stop any of this if he wins. Obama can make it all happen before he leaves in January.

Remember when Bush was president and those types of images were proof to the liberals and liberal media of a failed foreign policy? Remember when Bush was president, the daily media question was why the Arab world hated us? Remember our liberal government officials and celebrities were going overseas and stirring the pot. (Dick Durbin, Sean Penn)

Such utter, unequaled incompetence in one administration we have not seen in our lifetimes until this one. He makes Jimmy Carter look like Lincoln. And he leads in the polls?

The liberal media made it it’s daily mission to damage Bush. Now their daily mission is to do damage control for Obama. We are living in a Banana Republic with an almost cartoonish media carrying this man’s water for him till November.

I’m really not in the mood for debating another “they hate us for our freedom” type. At least we can agree on energy.

We are living in a Banana Republic with an almost cartoonish media carrying this man’s water for him till November.

hawkdriver on September 16, 2012 at 9:35 AM

Well said. The rule of law means nothing in America today, to say nothing of less binding ethical norms that used to be commonplace.

That OUR troubles from these muslim countries are about oil, and if we’d get out of there, were energy independent, things would blow over.
Wishcasting.

All these doomsday scenarios only exist in holy books and people’s imaginations

Naive, and more wishcasting.

Israel’s power I have no dispute with, but they are not the only ‘satan’ to the Islamic extremists.
We need do nothing, be nowhere, for them to hate us enough to desire to eradicate us.
To think otherwise is blindness.

True that. It’s both frightening and sad and surreal to see the biggest, most successfull experiment in democracy in history reduced to a caricature of itself under our own incredulous eyes…I guess the ‘unsuccessful’ part of the experiment is a stupefied, uncapable of critical thinking or plainly put it dumbed down (through the works of holywood and msm), uninformed and disengaged citizenry…enjoy!! :(

Slade73 on September 16, 2012 at 9:50 AM

My greatest fear is that it would take a bright flash and mushroom cloud to wake these people up, and that many of them would then cry even louder for appeasement and see Obama as their emissary to pay the danegeld. He’s already capitulating wrt to the video which his admin and his media allies have deemed responsible for the actions of savages, radicals and terrorists deaths of an American Ambassador and security personnel.

That’s why as much as I would have liked Israel to feel they don’t have to act alone, I can’t imagine how much faith they have in the current American government to truly support them before they suffer an attack of nuclear proportions.

CitizenEgg on September 16, 2012 at 8:39 AM

The Left figures as long as the Islamists also kill us conservatives/Christians/Republicans/Jews/non-Communists, it’s all good.

As for Israel, the ObamiNation is following a two-track stragedy, a race really between the largest Islamist army west of the Euphrates rolling east and the largest Islamist army east of the Euphrates to irradiate westward.

pambi on September 16, 2012 at 9:44 AM

Perhaps, but it is the overwhelming technological and cultural advancements of the West that kept us safe in the centuries after the crusades – not a desire to repeat the bloody mistakes of the past. No amount of military engagement in other parts of the world will save us from our own low birthrates, suicidal energy policies, criminal banking practices, or the general lack of confidence that seems to grip even the most successful of Nordic nations.

I brand anyone who says these protests were about the movie a full on idiot, then forcefully commit them…to a locked closet.

Biden taught me that one.

Slade73 on September 16, 2012 at 9:33 AM

I’d add…and make them watch the movie on a contiuous loop while listening to an Islam call to prayer by an extremely high pitched voiced muezzin over and over.

notta_dhimmi on September 16, 2012 at 9:55 AM

I just watched ABC’s “This Week”. Didn’t hear any mention of the principle of free speech. But I did hear a lot of talk about a video, talk which was always accompanied with such words as “hateful” and “offensive” as sure as “Peace be Upon Him” is said on mention of the words “The Prophet”.

Is this Saudi Arabia, or the United States? The First Amendment to the Constitution, anyone? Hello? Bueller?

abobo on September 16, 2012 at 9:43 AM

Just so we’re clear, they hate us because we have not submitted to the worship of their god Allah and his prophet Mohammad. The Crusades had nothing to do with oil.

That said, I’ve lost faith in any kind of military involvement in the ME — and this coming from someone that you would probably call a “neocon.” At this point, the only military action that would be effective would have to be one to absolutely crush the spirit of the radical Islamists, show them that their god is feckless an not worth fighting for. Maybe destroy the Kaaba in Mecca, or something. But we’re never going to do that.

“Gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades at the building in the town of al-Arish, prompting snipers on top of the security building to return fire. A gun battle ensued for more than an hour, witnesses said.

At least two civilians were reportedly wounded in the fighting.

Meanwhile, about 30 armored personnel carriers backed by helicopters fought militants in the town of Sheikh Zuwayed, 30 km (18.6 miles) east of al-Arish on the Mediterranean coast.

According to Palestinian news agency Ma’an, an Egyptian military helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Islamists during the incident, causing it to make an emergency landing.

Militants also attacked army checkpoints in Sheikh Zuwayed and in Rafah…

On Friday, in the midst of protests across the Middle East against an anti-Islam film produced in the United States, militants waving black banners and shouting “God is great!” stormed an international peacekeepers’ base in northern Sinai and battled troops, wounding two Colombians. They stole some weapons and radio equipment, officials said.

The base near the border with Gaza and Israel houses some 1,500 members of the force, including U.S. troops.

Egyptian forces last month began their biggest security sweep in decades in Sinai after militants killed 16 border guards on August 5 in the most deadly attack since Egypt’s 1973 war with Israel.

Since then, some 33 militants have been killed, with many more arrested…”

It was one thing for that moron Jay Carney to blame the video in Friday’s presser, but for Susan Rice to come out two days later and state it was a “spontaneous reaction” to the video that some guys with heavy artillery, who just happened to be in the neighborhood, decided to join, is amazing. Obviously, after several days of meetings, the White House is committing themselves to the video excuse.

There is no “perhaps.” The rule is convert or die. It is really that simple. Yes, there may be some who have pushed that to the back temporarily but it remains a tenet of the religion, like it or not. If you are not a believer of Mohammad then you are not worthy of life. Today the focus is on Israel and its supporters. If Israel were to fall then there would be other
non-believers to eradicate. There is no appeasing nor even accomodating, there is only surrender.
