NFL Week 2 open thread
posted at 11:01 am on September 16, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
Okay, I admit that last week the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t get off to such a great start. They lost to a sharp-looking Peyton Manning in Denver, but were competitive until almost the end, when Tracy Porter jumped a route and got a pick-six to put the game away. Today, the Steelers play at home against the New York Jets, which makes this the Super Bowl for Jazz Shaw and me. Normally I don’t pick Jets games because Jazz whines about it when I do out of courtesy to Jazz, but I’m going to pick the Steelers to win at home in a tough game, 27-21.
Last week I went 4-2 in my picks, a pretty decent start to the season. Can I do better this week? Let’s see:
- Vikings at Colts — Like I predicted last week, the Vikings had to hold on to win their home opener, taking it to OT before putting it away. Andrew Luck got off to a sloppy start, throwing three picks on the road against the Bears but still getting over 300 yards in his regular-season debut. Luck gets to play at home in one of the toughest away venues, and the Vikings defense isn’t as good as Chicago’s. I’ll pick the Colts to ring up their first win, 31-24.
- Redskins at Rams — RG3 got the better start to the season in last week’s surprising domination of the New Orleans Saints, going 19-26 for 320 yards and two TDs. The Rams are … the Rams. The Redskins should win their
firstsecond road game, 28-20 over St. Louis. - Lions at 49ers — Both of these teams have greatly improved over the last few seasons, and this may end up being the game of the week. After San Francisco beat Green Bay at Lambeau, though, I won’t pick against them at home. 49ers top the Lions, 35-24.
- Broncos at Falcons — I still think that Peyton Manning should have retired. He has a Super Bowl ring and nothing left to prove, and potentially a lot to lose with his neck still a work in progress by his own admission. Still, he looked like the Peyton Manning of old last week against the Steelers, and I don’t think Atlanta will intimidate him. The Falcons are favored, but look for a mild Broncos upset in Atlanta, 33-27.
- Cowboys at Seahawks — Tony Romo looked sharp 11 days ago on the road against division rivals New York Giants. He and his O-line got extra rest for their second road game in a row on the opposite coast. Seattle narrowly lost in Arizona last week, with a weak offense that only produced 254 yards total offense. Romo passed for over 300 yards alone against the tough Giants defense. If he can keep up that kind of production, Romo should easily outpace the Seahawks, winning 28-17.
Meanwhile, the NFL has a new message for its fans in the stands. Get excessively rowdy, and you may have to go to school to learn comportment and sportsmanship before you’re allowed back into a game. I may have to send Jazz there if he gets too upset over a loss to the Steelers this week.
Update: I made a mistake on last week’s Redskins victory; I thought they were playing at home, but they were on the road in New Orleans. Impressive.

Raiders pull ahead by a field goal.
Tim_CA on September 16, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Ha! Ha! Delusional Detroit fans were saying the same thing last year … until they faced the 49ers.
aunursa on September 16, 2012 at 2:28 PM
For anyone remotely interested, the Pete Franklin Bowl score is currently Bengals 17, Brownies 10 at the half. Sounds like an Epic Battle.
Del Dolemonte on September 16, 2012 at 2:45 PM
24-10 Bengals over the hapless Browns.
CW on September 16, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Reggie Bush just made Oakland’s defense look pathetic.
Miami TD
Tim_CA on September 16, 2012 at 3:01 PM
And yet another TD by Reggie Bush – 65 yds.
un-friggin-believable.
Tim_CA on September 16, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Bengals fans you better be worried about your defense after these first two weeks. Wow.

Free Sean Payton!

Too bad they can’t both lose.
Night Owl on September 16, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Wow-Arizona just fumbled the ball at the worst possible moment.
Del Dolemonte on September 16, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Anyone watching the Eagles/Ravens game? These refs are pathetic. They can’t even spot the ball correctly.
conservative pilgrim on September 16, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Well our defense was stellar as usual /.
Oh well at least the Gophers are 3-0.
gophergirl on September 16, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Missed FG ….sweeeeeeeeeeet.
CW on September 16, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Crazy Pats game. AZ was running out the clock and fumbled so Pats got it back with a minute left. The Pats had a touchdown run to win it ,but it got called back for holding. They set up a last second field goal. Gotskowski was 4-4 today hitting 2 field goals over 50 yards, but he hooked it left. AZ wins.
Wigglesworth on September 16, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Good grief. This Eagles / Ravens game will be the first one the refs blow. Absolutely pathetic.
My dog in this fight is a Raven’s loss. Go Steelers!
conservative pilgrim on September 16, 2012 at 4:30 PM
For sure. That the refs called that pass a fumble was pure silliness.

With the Browns losing Hugh Hewitt’s gonna need to talked off the roof.

Those Eagles! I was glued to that game.
Small wager on Eagles.
In a chaotic world with strange rules and enforcement, the loosest team, the most adaptable team will win.
If we had nuclear war, those guys would rule.

Wow, a look at the stats shows that the Saints’ D is now officially a Train Wreck.
In the first 2 games they’ve given up 924 yards and 70 points.
Brees is useless with that kind of “support”.
Del Dolemonte on September 16, 2012 at 6:43 PM
I’d say even Clark Kent is useless with that kind of ‘support.’

It looks like Pittsburgh is about to put this one away! 1st and goal from the 2!
Night Owl on September 16, 2012 at 7:14 PM
Yeah Steelers! And I’m glad to see that coach, (who lives in my town) who was so badly burned in a house fire last year, is healthy and at the game today.
Night Owl on September 16, 2012 at 7:22 PM
Yeah, what happened to Sanchez?
tommyboy on September 16, 2012 at 7:23 PM
i posted this before the games. too bad I don’t always pick correctly
gerrym51 on September 16, 2012 at 7:34 PM
Good job, Rams. And as Del said, Saints need to step up. Silver lining–even though they’re playing poorly, they’re only getting beat by one TD. Settle down, get ‘er done.
Christien on September 16, 2012 at 7:45 PM
Cards and P’burg taking care of business as usual.

How many GM’s would still be with the same team they led to one playoff victory in 15 years.
That’s right, the one who’s an owner.
Dallas sux!

Ed, you aren’t allowed to pick the Redskins anymore.
Cindy Munford on September 16, 2012 at 7:57 PM
Hey . . . I am just very glad that the Seahawks won. One of the youngest teams in the NFL with a rookie QB. Still rebuilding.

Make your picks after the game. It really improves your win percentage.
socalcon on September 16, 2012 at 9:35 PM
They were horrible! Took away a late TD by the Ravens on a horribly called “offensive” pass interference on Jacoby Jones. The NFL is diluting its product weekly with these backup refs!

The Lions are going 15-1!

True to form, NotCoach, the ever optimistic Lions’ fan shows why unrelenting support for your team is a must. Bravo NC.
You, and Susan Rice should go far in convincing the rest of the nation………..ahh, that’s not fair, as I do admire your commitment and loyalty to your team. (tipping my 49er hat to you)Rov

Yes. The Eagles win slightly less ugly, and against the real Cleveland Browns. Sorry but to some of a certain age the new Browns will always have an asterisk. And it will always be the Baltimore Colts. The Cards will always will always be St Louie and the Rams have no business being there, have always seemed glaringly out of place. But then to an earlier generation the Cards belong in Chicago and the Rams’ home is Cleveland. It all circles back around to Cleveland.
It happens at least once a year and unavoidably yesterday I was forced to listen to the game on Eagles radio. Won’t beat a dead horse about the slobbering homer play-by-play guy or the total idjit color man who doesn’t seem like he even looks at the field and whose color commentary consists entirely of describing the instant replay to the listener. That’s chronic annoyance we’re ready for going in, but it seems this year more than any other the broadcast was totally spammed by in-program advertising. It was “this time-out was brought to you by” and “that was a such-and-such bank first down”. They even had a sponsor for the freakin’ coaches challenge! Now I know advertising makes the game go round (and now, merchandising). Always has but this…well, the only way I can describe it is spam. The game is too obviously secondary now, no more than just content. And yesterday’s game was for sure more WWF than NFL. The league is fading. And here comes pink October. Oy.

I just love that Mike Shanahan’s practice of calling timeouts during FG tries bit him in the butt, helping the Rams get a FG before halftime.
He cost the Redskins the game every bit as much as Josh Morgan did:
