State Department to press: Stop asking us about the sacking of Benghazi consulate

posted at 11:31 am on September 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The US insists that the death of an American ambassador and three others in Benghazi resulted from a riot spinning out of control over a cheesy YouTube video.  The Libyan government insists that the operation that sacked the consulate and assassinated the four diplomatic personnel was a well-planned plot that exploited the rioting.  Who to believe?  Whatever you think, don’t bother asking the State Department, because they have told the media they’re done discussing it:

The State Department told reporters Friday afternoon that it won’t answer any more questions about the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans until the investigation into the incident is complete.

“I’m going to frustrate all of you, infinitely, by telling you that now that we have an open FBI investigation on the death of these four Americans, we are not going to be in a position to talk at all about what the U.S. government may or may not be learning about how any of this this happened — not who they were, not how it happened, not what happened to Ambassador Stevens, not any of it — until the Justice Department is ready to talk about the investigation that’s its got,” State Department spokeswoman Victorian Nuland told reporters late Friday afternoon.

“So I’m going to send to the FBI for those kinds of questions and they’re probably not going to talk to you about it,” she said.

They won’t answer any questions at all while the investigation continues?  That seems awfully convenient, especially since State had the responsibility for securing that mission in Benghazi in the first place — and on the anniversary of 9/11, a time when one might expect some kind of attack attempt.  Fox News military analyst Col. David Hunt told Breitbart’s Michael Patrick Leahy that the security policy for all Libyan diplomatic missions was determined last year after the fall of Moammar Qaddafi, and signed by Hillary Clinton — and that it “severely compromised” the safety of the diplomatic staff:

Hunt told Breitbart News that the new State Department Rules of Engagement for Libya, approved and signed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton since the 2011 fall of Khadafi’s regime, severely compromised the safety and security of murdered Ambassador Stevens and all American diplomatic staff in Libya.

He also stated that the decision not to staff Benghazi with Marines was made by Secretary of State Clinton when she attached her signature to the State Department Rules of Engagement for Libya document. Breitbart News has subsequently learned that under those rules of engagement, Secretary Clinton prohibited Marines from providing security at any American diplomatic installation in Libya.

Hunt told Breitbart News that “the rules of engagement have been changing drastically over the last 10 years. . . The reason the surge in Iraq worked was we had another 40,000 soldiers and the rules of engagement were changed to allow our guys to shoot. What’s happened in Libya is the final straw of political correctness. We allowed a contractor to hire local nationals as security guards, but said they can’t have bullets. This was all part of the point of not having a high profile in Libya.”

According to Hunt, the debacle at the American mission in Benghazi is directly the result of Obama’s new policies. ”The policy of the Obama administration led to this,” he said.

The building in Benghazi lacked even the basic security amenities, like bulletproof glass, Hunt claimed, and the building itself as insubstantial as “an outhouse.”  If these indeed were the security arrangements, it reminds me of the UN’s mission in Baghdad after the fall of Saddam Hussein.  The UN refused to use troops from the US and UK to secure the facility, instead placing themselves outside of the American “Green Zone” in Baghdad and hiring local security forces.  Shortly afterward in August 2003, terrorists attacked the UN facility and killed the mission’s leader, Sergio Viera de Mello, 21 others, and wounded more than 100.   After a second attack just a month later, the UN withdrew its mission entirely.

Not only should we have learned a lesson from that attack, we should also have learned a lesson from the map.  While Tripoli remains fairly secure in the western part of Libya, Benghazi is located on the other side of the country — where radical Islamist groups have percolated for years.  Al-Qaeda in Iraq recruited heavily from that part of the country while fighting the US in western Iraq particularly, and the fall of Qaddafi has allowed these groups — including AQ — to operate more openly.  That was one of the big concerns when Obama pushed NATO into a war against Qaddafi; deposing him would leave a power vacuum into which radical Islamists could seize control of at least parts of a fractured Libya.  If no one at State understood that well enough to know that diplomatic missions in Libya and especially in Benghazi would need stronger rather than lighter security, one has to wonder what exactly they were thinking.

Of course, we can’t ask them now, because they’re refusing to answer any questions.  That led to this interesting question from a reporter at the presser:

Reporters at the briefing pointed out that the officials on that conference call noted that they were giving out preliminary information that might have been wrong and if the State Department doesn’t talk about the night’s events ever again, that wrong information would remain uncorrected in the public sphere.

“The U.S. government is going to be happy to let incorrect information stand?” one reporter asked.

Perhaps incorrect information serves their interests better than the truth, eh?

People who kill based on a video need to be put in an insane asylum. We all know this isn’t about a video. It’s just an excuse to redefine the problem into something Obama can solve. But really, even their own arguments make no sense. If it really was a video, the US government should be killing those that would kill based on a video. Instead, they’re doing the exact opposite and restricting free speech.

The building in Benghazi lacked even the basic security amenities, like bulletproof glass

Interesting turn of phrase. Security measures are now amenities? I think of amenities as extras that set one thing apart from another. Lack of basic anti-terrorism/ force protection measures is hardly a lack of amenities.

I work in a building in DC with blast proof windows because of the federal agencies in the building. We’ve been told to not even bother trying to break through in the case of fire. I ask you, if these are the “amenities” in a building in DC, why are our diplomats in a place like Libya not protected as well?

We need a full investigation which will ultimately put the blame at the very highest levels of the State Department. The last thing I want is some mid-level facilities manager taking the blame for this atrocity because some big donor to Obama or Hillary Clinton signed off on this site as a consulate.

For not allowing substantial marine protection forces at that embassy when it was located in such a Islamic fundamentalist area I consider Hillary and Obama highly responsible through inexcusable negligence for the tragic deaths. I think they were afraid infidel marines there would upset the tender sensibilities of the death-to-America Muslims.

I hope Hillary is losing sleep over her guilt.

kingsjester,

You’re treading on very thin ice here. From all accounts Ambassador Stevens’ sexual orientation was never “openly gay.” By these same accounts, he was a professional foreign service officer. Why sully his reputation with your speculation? Even if true, you really think Stevens is the only homosexual within the top tier of the Department of State?

The fact of the matter is that we sent an American to be Ambassador to country that hates us. And let’s not forget that Obama toppled the dictatorship and then walked away before the job was done. That power vacuum is what killed Stevens, not his sexual orientation.

I agree with you that the left figured out very quickly that there was no upside to this turn of events. They tried to make it all about the “timing and tone” of Romney’s comments but that has gone nowhere as the facts inconveniently continue to emerge. Yet there must be some confusion among the DNC and MSM because they continue to flounder with legitimate questions by attacking Romney for his tone. Which tells me they have nothing.

You’re right, Nomad: The libs have no way out of this. The only things they can do are lie about the cause of it and cover up the investigation, and they have already begun using those tactics. Bad news for Barry: The public is not as stupid as he believes they are.

Their other weapon, and it is weak, is to chide the right for exploiting a tragedy. Hasn’t worked thus far. I think Team Romney is working on their strategy, and probably will take a deep dive into what Reagan did during the Iran hostage crisis (WWRRD). The campaign will tread cautiously and have surrogates throw the hard punches (Release the Sununu). It boils down to a failed foreign policy from an administration in over their heads.

Throwing Hillary under the bus will not happen until after the election. Bubba is the only thing Obama has left as a weapon (tragic) and she is going to step down in the next term anyhow. She and Preezy will put up a united front publicly, but their personal leakers will be busy.

Obama’s domestic and foreign policy failures – so many to choose from, so little airtime. The left knows this is the end of the line, and they are unhinged at the likelihood of losing the White House.

However, now that you bring it up, when I was a child, I went to church in my sunday best. I asked my father why I had to dress up and look my best. He told me that church was the house of God, and that If I was to appear before God, I should show him respect by looking my best. I now apply that to Hillary. She is representing the people of The United States. She should look her best. By looking like an old crone, she shows disrespect for the American people, and gives the impression that this is an old and dying country – which, being an obama representative, is probably exactly the impression she wants to give.

I find discussion of the ambassador’s sexual orientiation to be severely inappropriate.

Whatever the man’s public political beliefs, I have seen no information that his private life had any bearing on his fate.

I also think that he, whatever his political beliefs, worked hard enough in his life toward his own goals and stepped forward to be a representative of our nation in a dangerous, far-flung country.

I don’t care if he went to Berkeley or wherever. Democrat or not. The man stepped forward on behalf of our country.

I take my hat off to Ambassador Stevens, and honor his memory, as well as those who died with him, as a man who lost his life in service to the United States of America.

cane_loader on September 15, 2012 at 8:37 PM

That said, if negligence on behalf of the State Department led to his death, I demand that it be exposed, even if the negligence leads to the top.

We cannot just lose an ambassador and have life and Letterman go on.

If Sec’y-of-State Clinton is to blame, I want to know.

If she isn’t, I want to know who is.

Either way, just as in the case of Agent Terry, I don’t want to see Ambassador Stevens swept under the rug, after giving his life for his country in suspicious circumstances.

I demand that the person(s) to blame for the lack of protection in an Arab country on 9/11 be identified and dealt with accordingly.

God bless and comfort the Stevens and the Smith and the families of their guards.

For one thing, sending a homosexual Ambassador to a strict Muslim country under Sharia law is an act of gross insensitivity–something Obama & Co. have been twisting themselves into a pretzel to avoid while carrying out their appeasement of the Muslim Brotherhood. Homosexuality is a capital crime in those countries. That makes the militants’ job all the easier since their line is that our culture is a degenerate cesspool bent on denigrating and belittling Islam. The Unholy Alliance of leftists and Islamists makes for strange bedfellows, especially since one group is using and exploiting the other.

My first problem with it is that I have seen no official, credible information to the ambassadorwas homosexual.

On the chance that he was not, there is also the chance that his family might be of a certain percentage that would be highly offended if is wasn’t true.

I feel that there should be NO discussion of the martyred ambassador’s sexuality without a CREDIBLE LINK, and, even then, it seems highly inappropriate to me.

It is shameful to devolve the thread into s discussion of gaydom, when we don’t even have the facts.

cane_loader on September 15, 2012 at 9:27 PM

If Ambassador Stevens was not gay, and if his family does not approve of the gay lifestyle, then it is extremely inappropriate to make unproven allegations on Hot Air after he gave his life for America.

Down memory lane with CNN/Time Magazine poll analysis on this date, September 15, 1980:

For so early in the campaign, a surprisingly low 7% of registered voters claim to be undecided about whom they now favor. (The study was based on a national sample of 1,644 registered voters interviewed between Aug. 26 and 28. The sampling error is thus plus or minus 3% and 4.5% when comparing present trend readings with previous TIME studies.) Still, the survey discloses just how shaky those current preferences are.Fully 55% say they are not “personally interested or excited about” any of the candidates. Only 11% report genuine enthusiasm for Reagan; a mere 9% feel that way about Carter and 6% about Anderson. In fact, much of the support given their preferred candidates is based on voters’ opposition to the others, the choices are essentially anti votes. Thus 43% of the voters who prefer Reagan say they do so because they are “really voting against Carter.” Similarly, 34% of Carter’s supporters say their choice is based on opposition to Reagan, while a hefty 61% of Anderson’s followers admit that they are motivated by being “against Carter and Reagan.”

Though Carter and Reagan are even up in the race, the poll discloses areas of serious slippage for Reagan in important areas. For one thing, 59% of those preferring Carter claim they do so out of a positive feeling for him:they like his “experience,” and consider him “safer” in foreign affairs. Only 48% of Reagan’s followers feel a similar sense of confidence in their choice’s ability to get things done and to answer the need for a change. At the same time, Reagan’s rating on abilities regarded as important by voters has declined. In TIME’s last survey in May, 49% of those sampled agreed that Reagan was a leader “you can trust,” while 42% believe that now.

cane loader: His homosexuality is not “proven,” but it is relevant if true. The links given above in this thread allege that he was well known as a homosexual. The allegations that he or his body was sodomized have not been proven but would tend to support the allegation. If the United States in appointing homosexuals to Ambassadorships in Islamic countries under Sharia no policy could be more self-defeating, helpful to our enemies, and dangerous to our diplomats.

This is not a “discussion of gaydom”–it is, or should be, a discussion of why the U.S. State Dept. has initiated a whitewash of an assassination of an American ambassador and his guards. Stevens’ homosexuality, if true, might be an important factor and part of the reason why a coverup has started. “Inappropriateness” has nothing to do with it. We want the truth when Americans are slaughtered like pigs by our enemies, whether they be gay, straight, military, civilian, or diplomatic.

The man is dead.

There is no official confirmation.

I think it is despicable to continue speculation.

cane_loader on September 15, 2012 at 9:58 PM

I don’t think Stevens’ lifestyle is relevant to the terrorist attack. He and his staff were in peril because they were American. He accepted his mission, served our nation, and we mourn his loss as well as those who served with him.

This issue is another distraction that gets in the way of finding out who murdered him and preventing this nightmare from happening again.

when they sodomized Stevens’ they also sodomized our country. we are so blind and stupid not to read the signs. do you think putin would let them get away with it?

I have seem no official link that this happened.

I am growing increasingly disturbed at the number of comments tonight on several threads obsessing on sodomy (not picking on your comment specifically).

Let’s have some class here, folks. Let’s have some respect for the dead ambassador.

Let’s discuss lynching his killers, instead of anal jibes. Please

There’s one problem with with their theory/damage control; the movie was posted on YouTube in July.

Looks back at the Mohammad cartoons. What happened? The savages went wild before the cartoons were printed — same with the whole Koran burning thing. The mere mention of these things happening or appearing drove them wild.

The attacks on the embassies started on 9/11, the anniversary of their (Muslims) great heroes victory/blow against the satin of this world. He is dead now. Since 5/1/11, they (not just al-Qaeda) have vowed revenge, many times, on 9/11. Why revenge on any other date?

Sorry, but this excuse doesn`t work. Try another one.

It`s amusing, because under the liberal scenario of murdering for petty reasons, the Muzzies look like supreme savages. And they still miss a valuable lesson. They’d murder you for similar reasons.

The terror groups plan these operation with more logical goals in mind, knowing the frenzied mobs will burn, rape and murder for any slight against Islam.

State Department to press: Stop asking us about the sacking of Benghazi consulate

Because you know you screwed up badly, and the Secretary of State will get calls to resign over it.

So much for ’16.

Tater Salad on September 16, 2012 at 12:18 AM

If I were in State and overseas I just might ask myself: ‘Just how expendable am I to Hillary Clinton?’

There is a difference between going into a known dangerous region with good support and backing, and going into it with high hopes and wishes. Mostly this revolves around men and women with weapons, ammo, body armor and an allowance to protect one’s hide. If you don’t got those things, you have just been deemed expendable.

ajacksonian on September 15, 2012 at 11:41 AM

They might as well have just given them red shirts so they knew what to expect…

There Goes The Neighborhood on September 16, 2012 at 12:26 AM

I keep reading the no bullets thing is not true, what is the truth regarding whether the embassy guards were armed with live ammo? Does anyone know?

mbs on September 15, 2012 at 11:45 AM

They deny that Marines were not allowed to have bullets. But there were no Marines present at an embassy or consulate in Libya, so that really doesn’t matter in this case. But Powerline reports that the local security guards were not allowed to have ammunition.

There Goes The Neighborhood on September 16, 2012 at 12:40 AM

“The head of Libya’s new national congress has blamed al Qaeda-linked militants for planning Tuesday’s deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, raising further questions about the motive behind the mayhem that killed four Americans.”

HMMMM I guess the stupid movie wasn’t the cause like Hillary said it was, now what Barry? I know they don’t like the smell and sounds of bacon sizzling in the morning

…you’re starting to get wierd on a couple of threads…like you’re drifting to the other side…even every MSM picture and story about Hill…shows her in some nightclub drinking lately… it’s not “older”…she’s not taking care of herself…Michelle Bachmann is getting older…and she looks better than a year or two ago!…my wife is almost 30 years older than when I met her…and I’m in heat!…What’s wrong with you?

Well, seems to me of late, Hillary hasn’t forgotten one bit how to run that shredder. She’s bad news. She’s an opportunist just wanting in that big seat and people need to remember all the stunts she pulled when Billy was in the big seat. She hasnt lost her touch in sneakiness. We have americans dead over some of this stuff. Damn good americans they were.

State Department to press: Stop asking us about the sacking of Benghazi consulate.

MSM: “Okay.”

Thought experiment: if the Obama administration can tell the media to quit investigating this mess 6 weeks before a national election, and get away with it… consider what they will be getting away with as they enjoy 4 more years without even having to worry about getting re-elected?

Do we really want to find out what Obama and his tame media will try when they don’t think they have to worry about fooling us anymore?

drunyan8315 on September 16, 2012 at 10:44 AM

MSM: “Don’t tell us, we don’t want to know”
State Dept: “We’re not going to”
MSM: “Whew, good”

Pablo Snooze on September 16, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Surely there is lots in the public domain that we can talk about, that is not secret, because it is all over the foreign press.

Fleuries on September 16, 2012 at 5:19 PM

You’re right, Nomad: The libs have no way out of this. The only things they can do are lie about the cause of it and cover up the investigation, and they have already begun using those tactics. Bad news for Barry: The public is not as stupid as he believes they are. …

Philly on September 15, 2012 at 8:03 PM

Oh yes they are. The average American is incredibly stupid. If they weren’t, obama wouldn’t poll as high as he does and most of the MSM would be bankrupt. Yeah, they are really stupid. That is why I do not have any good vives for the future of These United States.
