State Department to press: Stop asking us about the sacking of Benghazi consulate

posted at 11:31 am on September 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The US insists that the death of an American ambassador and three others in Benghazi resulted from a riot spinning out of control over a cheesy YouTube video.  The Libyan government insists that the operation that sacked the consulate and assassinated the four diplomatic personnel was a well-planned plot that exploited the rioting.  Who to believe?  Whatever you think, don’t bother asking the State Department, because they have told the media they’re done discussing it:

The State Department told reporters Friday afternoon that it won’t answer any more questions about the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans until the investigation into the incident is complete.

“I’m going to frustrate all of you, infinitely, by telling you that now that we have an open FBI investigation on the death of these four Americans, we are not going to be in a position to talk at all about what the U.S. government may or may not be learning about how any of this this happened — not who they were, not how it happened, not what happened to Ambassador Stevens, not any of it — until the Justice Department is ready to talk about the investigation that’s its got,” State Department spokeswoman Victorian Nuland told reporters late Friday afternoon.

“So I’m going to send to the FBI for those kinds of questions and they’re probably not going to talk to you about it,” she said.

They won’t answer any questions at all while the investigation continues?  That seems awfully convenient, especially since State had the responsibility for securing that mission in Benghazi in the first place — and on the anniversary of 9/11, a time when one might expect some kind of attack attempt.  Fox News military analyst Col. David Hunt told Breitbart’s Michael Patrick Leahy that the security policy for all Libyan diplomatic missions was determined last year after the fall of Moammar Qaddafi, and signed by Hillary Clinton — and that it “severely compromised” the safety of the diplomatic staff:

Hunt told Breitbart News that the new State Department Rules of Engagement for Libya, approved and signed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton since the 2011 fall of Khadafi’s regime, severely compromised the safety and security of murdered Ambassador Stevens and all American diplomatic staff in Libya.

He also stated that the decision not to staff Benghazi with Marines was made by Secretary of State Clinton when she attached her signature to the State Department Rules of Engagement for Libya document. Breitbart News has subsequently learned that under those rules of engagement, Secretary Clinton prohibited Marines from providing security at any American diplomatic installation in Libya.

Hunt told Breitbart News that “the rules of engagement have been changing drastically over the last 10 years. . . The reason the surge in Iraq worked was we had another 40,000 soldiers and the rules of engagement were changed to allow our guys to shoot. What’s happened in Libya is the final straw of political correctness. We allowed a contractor to hire local nationals as security guards, but said they can’t have bullets. This was all part of the point of not having a high profile in Libya.”

According to Hunt, the debacle at the American mission in Benghazi is directly the result of Obama’s new policies. “The policy of the Obama administration led to this,” he said.

The building in Benghazi lacked even the basic security amenities, like bulletproof glass, Hunt claimed, and the building itself as insubstantial as “an outhouse.”  If these indeed were the security arrangements, it reminds me of the UN’s mission in Baghdad after the fall of Saddam Hussein.  The UN refused to use troops from the US and UK to secure the facility, instead placing themselves outside of the American “Green Zone” in Baghdad and hiring local security forces.  Shortly afterward in August 2003, terrorists attacked the UN facility and killed the mission’s leader, Sergio Viera de Mello, 21 others, and wounded more than 100.   After a second attack just a month later, the UN withdrew its mission entirely.

Not only should we have learned a lesson from that attack, we should also have learned a lesson from the map.  While Tripoli remains fairly secure in the western part of Libya, Benghazi is located on the other side of the country — where radical Islamist groups have percolated for years.  Al-Qaeda in Iraq recruited heavily from that part of the country while fighting the US in western Iraq particularly, and the fall of Qaddafi has allowed these groups — including AQ — to operate more openly.  That was one of the big concerns when Obama pushed NATO into a war against Qaddafi; deposing him would leave a power vacuum into which radical Islamists could seize control of at least parts of a fractured Libya.  If no one at State understood that well enough to know that diplomatic missions in Libya and especially in Benghazi would need stronger rather than lighter security, one has to wonder what exactly they were thinking.

Of course, we can’t ask them now, because they’re refusing to answer any questions.  That led to this interesting question from a reporter at the presser:

Reporters at the briefing pointed out that the officials on that conference call noted that they were giving out preliminary information that might have been wrong and if the State Department doesn’t talk about the night’s events ever again, that wrong information would remain uncorrected in the public sphere.

“The U.S. government is going to be happy to let incorrect information stand?” one reporter asked.

Perhaps incorrect information serves their interests better than the truth, eh?

Here’s one question that doesn’t involve an FBI investigation: What the hell was Stevens doing running around Benghazi with a whole two guards on the anniversary of 911, and in a nation that is still in governmental turmoil?

I mean shiite, when the WTO meets in Europe and all the anarchist crazies hit the streets, we lock up our embassies tighter than a frog’s ass, and that’s in EUROPE.

If I were in State and overseas I just might ask myself: ‘Just how expendable am I to Hillary Clinton?’

There is a difference between going into a known dangerous region with good support and backing, and going into it with high hopes and wishes. Mostly this revolves around men and women with weapons, ammo, body armor and an allowance to protect one’s hide. If you don’t got those things, you have just been deemed expendable.

They’re protecting BO, too. Both BO and Hill had that look of, “Oh, $shit. We better come up with something otherwise we’re screwed”.

Neither one of them appeared concerned or contrite. They rambled and their comments were boiler-plate – delivered in a flat, wooden manner.

The notion that this turmoil is due to a movie trailer is absurd, and it’s insulting that they continue to throw it out. But that’s what the Left does. It’s what this administration does – Blame Someone Else….. no matter what happens, no matter how devastating or how much harm is done….. It’s Always Someone Else’s Fault.

Hill and BO have one thing in common. They are both pathological liars. It’s what they do best.

They will silence discussion of this debacle for BO’s benefit. INOW, as usual, EVERY thing they do is politically motivated. Everything.

It comes down to whether Hillary signed off on the “no ammo” rule. That doesn’t hinder an FBI investigation.

Americans have the right to know. If she signed off on it, she’s gone.

Lest we forget, Hillary is an expert at covering her tracks.

Rose Law Firm billing records went missing for years until they mysteriously appeared on a table in a White-House hall.

Y’all don’t think that if Sandy Burglar can steal the docs that tied Bill to 9/11, he or another like him can’t disappear the doc Hillary signed vis a vis Libyan embassy security?

That document will never see the light of day,

Never.

Still, look what these Nazis are doing with Fast and Furious, locking everything down and whistling a little ditty, pretending they can’t hear us.

Plain and simple, anything of any import in this investigation will be hidden away by yet another of POSGRP’s illegal executive orders. They’ll issue some pap that the meat-gobblers like Matthews will proclaim as ironclad proof that Bark and Hillary are blameless, and wait for the public to move on.

Meanwhile Stevens and 3 other Americans will still be dead, with their bloody handprints on the walls of the consulate marking their last moments on Earth.

This is a security fiasco and a strategic debacle for the foreign policy of the United States, not a liquor store hold-up…”

Perhaps someone could ask the State Dept. just what the Obama Doctrine is and how that sucker is going right now. Or if they can even DESCRIBE what the Obama Doctrine is… that would be a great start… just get someone at State on the record on this shinola.

Of course they don’t want to talk about it, just like they don’t want to talk about “Operation Fast and Furious”. They intentionally got people killed to use as political cover for actions they were taking and it blew up in their faces. This is called, Criminal Malfeasance by a Public Official and Hillary should go to prison for it.

SWalker on September 15, 2012 at 11:50 AM

I fully believe that these policies were instigated by Obama.

However, as a person with commonsense, Hillary should have known this was a disaster in the making. She should have been aware
of the potential for trouble in particular on the anniversary
of 9.11. Plus, I read there was all sorts of “chatter” going on
about it.

As a patriot, Hillary should have at the very least “planted”
a person to speak about this, alerting the media (I know, worthless
strategy) and the public to a potential devastating issue.

These politicians have their ways of getting these issues out in
front of the media and public without damaging their careers or
personna.

Why didn’t she do it? Not a patriot, no commonsense, or ?

Honestly, this really isn’t a overreach of the police.

wolly4321 on September 15, 2012 at 12:02 PM

Another Hillary Whitewater, er, whitewash. Hillary has a lot to answer for, viz:

1 Why did you push for Qadaffy’s ouster which resulted in a dangerously unstable Libya-which led to the murder of the ambassador, 3 others and the burning and gutting of our embassy? Also-you and Obama together share responsibility for a unstable, menacing Egypt led by religious fanatics.
2 Why were no Marines present to guard our embassy?
3 Why did you ignore warnings of an attack given 48 hours prior?
4 Why do you apologize the these vile attackers by condemning the movie maker who were the ‘casus belli’ excuse for the rioters?
5 Why do you state the vast majority of Muslims are decent, peace lovers when rioting, murdering Muslims seemed to prove the very point the movie was making? And if the vast majority are as decent as you say, why weren’t the rioters restrained by these “decent” folks.?
6 Was Ambassador Stevens (reputedly a homosexual)raped and sodomized both before and after he was tortured and murdered? It was widely reported that the ambassador was sodomized but nothing from the State Department either confirming or denying this. If it happened, was it hushed up so people wouldn’t get a “bad impression” of Muslims? Or was it hushed up to minimize CYA on your part?

MaiDee on September 15, 2012 at 12:03 PM

I never thought that I would see the US Government condemn Free Speech in order to appease our enemies.

It is more than that. CYA, protect Obama & Hillary and buy time to get the press back in their camp. All to remain in power.
The sad thing is that Carney & the Administration have further weakened the USA and placed us in a very dangerous position by lying to we the people (about the film) and sending this message to allies & foes around the world. They have exposed the weak underbelly of the USA with O at the helm.

Israel, the US and the West cannot stop the barbaric hoards that are now being unleased from the pit of hell. Only an intervention from the true God will do that…and it is coming but not without great loss of human life. God have mercy on the present leaders of this country and the people & press that put him there. The blood on their hands is yet to be measured.

This is a very dangerous administration. They are inept in every way, and they have no compunction about forcing citizens to give up their freedoms. They never quit.

Cody1991 on September 15, 2012 at 11:55 AM

I don’t think they are “inept.” I think this is what they want to happen.

Yep. As of the last census we know what the demographics are. The domestic policies of this administration inflict pain on everyone of them, but the largest target is? Yeah, that’s right. Dinsesh called it.

Cody1991 on September 15, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Protecting Hillary?

Oh for goodness sake!!

NO.

PROTECTING OBAMA.

For the same reason, Holder is untouchable.

For the same reason, the birth certificate is made an issue (to keep prying eyes away from his transcripts).

It’s pretty simple folks.

The film trailer, not a film at all, 6 months old on Youtube, is a fabrication/diversion by an utterly inept president.

The media and Romney will let Obama and Hillary get away with it, incredibly.

Jeebus…this entire administration is tone deaf.

This Administration is not tone deaf, they know exactly what they are doing. And if that is not enough, they have a complicit media ready, willing and able to cover for these idiots.

The swiftness in which the media ignored this story and put all of their focus on Mitt Romney in the first 24 hours should scare every citizen of this country.

Good one, and others, they are not “tone deaf” at all. They do this intentionally.

Wake up America. They are succeeding beyond their wildest imagination, the muzzies, and Obama/Hillary are aiding and enabling them.

Occasionally I attempt to tone it down. I agree that all of this is intentional. Look at the domestic policies, our economy, socialized medicine, etc.

The media should not be accusing citizens of hating the president. They should be asking why he hates this country.

Mr Stevens, it is believed, was left in the building by the rest of the staff after they failed to find him in dense smoke caused by a blaze which had engulfed the building.
So they fled the building without the Ambassador?

At least 2 of the deceased were ex-SEALS and the firefight lasted 5 hours.

So I figure 2 against 400+ with rpg’s. We don’t have the whole story.

It wouldn’t have taken 5 hours unless there was resistance, now would it?

wolly4321 on September 15, 2012 at 12:02 PM

I never saw anything that talked about a “firefight”. Maybe I missed it. Just saying.

I hadn’t read/heard of a 5 hour firefight but rather that the US lost track of the Ambassador for 5 hours (some accounts had that up to 12 hours).

CoffeeLover on September 15, 2012 at 12:09 PM

They are simply undocumented embassy visitors so there is no need to use force against them.

Sounds like another way to envoke “Executive Privilege” without having to use the words.

Don’t see why the MSM is upset. Aren’t they use to Barry pissing on them by now? Maybe they should hump Barry’s leg a little harder.

I will make a personal pledge to you that if I become aware that information we gave that first night is radically wrong in a way that you deserve to know, I will do my best to get that information to you,” Nuland said. “But I have to respect the fact that this is now a crime scene.”

2 things from the Headline of this article last night.

crime scene

in a way that you deserve to know

I can’t even begin to describe the anger I feel that Mitt Romney has the audacity to try to distract the President while he is trying very, very hard to deal with this situation let alone the economy.

DaveDief on September 15, 2012 at 12:10 PM

I suppose in a way this is a grim test to see just how much of an orwellian nightmare the US has really become.

Many setbacks in US foreign operations or wars are not, in fact, “scandalous,” that is they’re not the result of incompetence or specific US decisions. As the military says – “the enemy gets a vote”.

But this …… has disastrous scandalous incompetence written all over it. And the “ongoing investigation” gambit has (I think) here reached a new extreme. Cannot recall if this gambit were played in previous cases like the USS Cole, Khobar Towers in Saudi, etc. – where FBI investigations also were undertaken so that domestic indictments could be generated.

It is absolutely key to get the details – actual documents – Col. Hunt alludes to about the Libyan post security plans. Even before getting those, it’s reasonable (though not lock-certain) to conclude that the security arrangements were inexcusably bad (per Ed’s excellent post).

I have spent a lot of time at posts in locations of various threat levels, from medium (mostly due to post-Soviet chaos and civil wars not directed at the US in any way) to very high (current war zones). It is just mind-boggling to think that the Beghazi security arrangements were so shoddy (physically non-secure facility, poorly trained and un-vettable locals as your troops). US embassies in the Mid East (and to some extent everywhere, now) are “beautiful fortresses”. For a reason.

The Perfection-as-a-Standard, endless bad-faith second- and triple-guessing idiocy of Beltway media on things that go wrong were some of the things that drove me out of the business way back. This is a case where, of course, we are left in suspense whether the “press” will even do a pale imitation of their jobs when the stakes and the importance of their role could not be higher.

Don’t compare this mess to the old Soviet system.

First, they would not eat with an enemy’s flag at the table.

Second, the recriminations and purges following failure are still legend.

Although they didn’t have a media that resembled a group of Great White sharks chasing a small school of baitfish while bumping off injured humpbacks to the point of injuring themselves.

There are questions here of whale sized dimensions.

Plus, the taking in of the ex-con, who made the trailer, not a movie at all, 6 months ago…

Goebbels orgasmes in his coffin. His wildest dreams have been surpassed in propaganda.

Clint Eastwood was right – the only thing to remember from both conventions is “Obama is the biggest hoax upon the land and the world”.

Romney then added his utterly moronic statement about “it was wrong to make the movie”.

Obama is a charlatan.

Hillary is a traitor, along with Obama.

Romney is a fool to let them and the media get away.

On Nov. 6 the voters can choose to go with Obama’s dream, of destruction of all which is still good in the world, so that all will be equally miserable, except him and his looters, or the once American Dream. The choice is theirs. It will be the last choice.

“FBI investigation” is a dog-whistle to the press to shut-up.

Or perhaps Bengazi is located in the US.

gh on September 15, 2012 at 12:11 PM

After one reporter asked, ““The U.S. government is going to be happy to let incorrect information stand?” the State Department spokesman, Victoria Nuland, said:

“I will make a personal pledge to you that if I become aware that information we gave that first night is radically wrong in a way that you deserve to know, I will do my best to get that information to you,” Nuland said. “But I have to respect the fact that this is now a crime scene.”

Read that carefully. She says “if I become aware”, and “if” that info is “radically wrong” and than it has to be something that “you (the MSM) deserve to know” she will then do her “best” to get that information to them. In other words, forget about it.

What does “radically wrong” mean and who gets to judge? Eric Holder? What do we “deserve to know”?
That is one of the most condescending remarks from a public official that I have ever heard. And how well is that “crime scene” being secured? I have seen photos of Libyans running around in that destroyed facility. I’m sure that an investigation by the F-freakin’-B-I is going to do a lot of good.

But don’t get me started. I’ll stroke out.
