Media endangers entire neighborhood to pursue thoughtcrime suspect

posted at 4:01 pm on September 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

When Princess Diana was killed in a car crash after a high-speed race through the streets of Paris with paparazzi, her family understandably claimed that the media had killed the mother of the future King of the UK.  At the time, I considered that a little hyperbolic, although hardly unwarranted hyperbole, as the actual proximate causes of death were a driver under the influence making a rash decision to outrun photographers and a decision not to use seatbelts. But over the last couple of days, I wonder whether the American media may get someone killed — and perhaps more than a few people — with their irresponsible stakeout of “Sam Bacile.”

First, let me introduce you to my hometown of Cerritos, California.  My family moved there in 1970, just a few years past its unincorporated status of Dairy Valley.  At the time, we had a few operating dairies within the city, as well as at least one small horse facility, along with new retail and residential building.  I graduated from Cerritos High in 1980, five years after the facility had opened, and we still had a dairy or two operating, although they were on their way out.  The incongruous exurban outpost in the Los Angeles metro area soon transformed into a pricy center for retail and the arts.

Not too many famous people came from my little corner of the world.  Our biggest celebrity is probably Lela Rochon, who graduated a couple of years after me.  Lela started her career as a Spuds MacKenzie girl and went on to star in movies such as Waiting to Exhale, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Any Given Sunday, and an especially delightful role in Harlem Nights with Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy.  I didn’t know Lela in high school, but I did know Lee Marvin’s biographer, Dwayne Epstein, who also went to Cerritos High and whose book Point Blank will come out early next year.  Mike Allen of Politico also hails from Cerritos, and then you have Yours Truly, which shows how little star power the old hometown really has.

In fact, the most notoriety our town ever had was for a horrible tragedy, the Aero Mexico plane crash of 1986.  I had moved out of Cerritos by that time, but by chance happened to be at our then-family home when the crash occurred.  It killed 67 people in the air and another 15 on the ground, in a neighborhood that looked as though it had been bombed.

Why bring that up?  It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this report from local TV station KTLA in the media’s pursuit of “Sam Bacile,” the man behind the YouTube video that provided an excuse for rioting in a number of countries:

Take a look at just the first minute or so of this report.  Look at all of the media trucks in this sleepy little neighborhood, and not just KTLA’s.  If anyone interested in taking revenge on Nakoula Besseley Nakoula wanted to know where to find him, it wouldn’t take long in this small city, especially with some media reports noting Nakoula’s distinctive front door.  And while some people wouldn’t care about Nakoula’s fate, the kind of people looking to take revenge on him aren’t really known for their precision attacks and avoidance of collateral damage.  This media swarm puts that entire neighborhood at risk, now and probably for a very long time.

And for what?  Is Nakoula a serial killer? A child molester?  No, he’s a man with poor taste who made a video that insulted some people who can’t deal with criticism, even the laughably inane and inept criticism of this 14-minute cheesefest that makes Plan 9 From Outer Space look like Citizen Kane.  However, in the US, making really bad movies and engaging in even inept theological and historical commentary isn’t a crime at all.  The media are undermining the same guarantees of free speech that allow them to operate without government interference, and they’re putting people’s lives at risk while doing so.  They’re not going to be happy until there’s another crater in Cerritos.

Meanwhile, while the media provides moment-to-moment coverage of Thoughtcrime Enemy #1 this week, the feds are interrogating him as to whether his filmmaking might violate his probation on unrelated matters:

A man purported to be a filmmaker involved with the anti-Islam video sparking violent unrest in the Middle East and North Africa was escorted by deputies from his Cerritos, Calif., home shortly after midnight Saturday morning, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

Media and law enforcement had been staking out the home at the end of a cul de sac in the Southern California city for about 48 hours when Nakoula Besseley Nakoula emerged wearing a coat, hat, scarf and glasses.

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore confirmed to NBCLA that Nakoula, 55, was taken to the Cerritos sheriff’s station for interviewing by federal probation officers aimed at determining whether he violated the terms of his 5-year probation by uploading a video to the Internet.

“We are in an assist mode,” he said.

Nakoula is no saint, as the report makes clear:

A federal grand jury indictment in February 2009 charged Nakoula in an alleged bank fraud conspiracy. The indictment accused him and others of fraudulently obtaining the identities and Social Security numbers of bank customers at Wells Fargo and withdrawing $860 from bank branches in Cerritos, Artesia and Norwalk.

Nakoula pleaded no contest in 2010 and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison, but was released early. The terms of his parole included being barred from assuming aliases and using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer. …

Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons confirmed that Nakoula also served a year in jail after pleading guilty to possession of meth with the intent to manufacture in 1997.

Here’s the question: would any of these people care about Nakoula’s probation status had the video not purportedly caused riots?  If so, isn’t this pursuit more about the kind of speech in which Nakoula engaged than in what kind of activity he may have conducted with computers and the Internet? This is dangerous ground for free speech, and the media is making Cerritos into dangerous ground in a much more literal sense.

Update: Commenters rightly argue with an assumption I didn’t mean to make in my last paragraph. I don’t think a six-month old video “caused” the riots, either. It was just a pretext. I’ve added “purportedly” to make clear I’m arguing the current claim rather than the reality.

This ‘movie’ guy, it’s just a trailer, 6 months old, on Youtube…is just a pretext and is now being indoctrinated to play with the hoax perpetrated upon the land. He’s a D.

The WH and the State department are inept, derelict and own all this, including the blood on their hands.

9/11 anniversary naivete

Stevens foolish enough to be in Benghazi on such a date

Cult of stupid and naive current State dept

Roots in Peace Corps, Berkeley, and other do-gooderism crap

Security and other funds cut by Obama

State department policy of coddling with the enemy instead of furthering American ideals and interests around the world

Protected only by a simple key at the door, if even that.

In the end the stupid idealism killed the 4, but Obama and Hillary own it.

This isn’t only about Nakoula, it’s aimed at anyone that uses the internet to spread a message that is not Politically Correct. If this guy was attacking the Mormon religion, he would be a media hero headed for an Academy Award.

If his message was positive for little Bammie’s reelection, he would be the guest of honor at the next fundraiser.

The message is, we can find you, we can broadcast your address to the world, we can show the jihadis where you live.

I honestly don’t care if he is guilty of a parole violation or not.

This action is due to his involvement in that movie and a sad attempt by the police, military and the administration to placate the murderous Muslim rage that has spooked them. That woman in the clip is clearly frightened and with good reason. The government is making it clear that she will not be protected any more than the sleazy filmmaker will be if the Muslims target her. The Muslims use of terror has the US government on the run, desperately trying to find a way to stop Rage Boy from detonating.

Nakoula is no saint

Ed, no one who becomes an enemy of the state in obama’s sharia world will be a “saint.” Their “biography” will be whatever the government goons need it to be. Study some history, for God’s sake. The guy stole $860. He is a petty criminal. And at the beginning of EVERY SINGLE genocide in human history, these kinds of folks are targeted first – the petty criminals, prostitutes, drunks, homeless bums, etc. Every critic the Soviets locked up was “mentally deranged.” The elites never speak up for them, never complain, until the tyrants run out of low-level scapegoats and start coming for them. This is a classic act of scapegoating by government tyrants, and we are all reacting just as human always have: “Gee…umm…the guy was no saint.”

So I guess we’ll all just wait around until they start coming for the saints, huh? Then it will really be something to be concerned about.

The gathering storm.

This all stinks of radical Islam starting to run amok here in our own country, starting to use and bend political correctness to take control of the de facto levers of power.
And the Pakistani call for interpol laws outlawing any “anti-Islam material” on the internet illustrates the insidious nature of Islam. Islamists will leverage their minority status to gain huge influence. The radical Muslims show an obvious outward face of extreme violence, but… up and down the line the Dem politicians like H Clinton will continue to insist that it is a “great” religion “of peace.” Incredible.
And the Muslims in a targeted country move from minority to quasi-majority status quickly. Once they gain a foothold, they will not only multiply, but conspire to quickly pull more of their own Muslims into that country. And the inexorable push of their propaganda is toward an extremist (Al Qaeda) viewpoint. Look what’s happening in Europe. Keep it over there.

“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.” -B H Obama

It’s about the “scoop.”

I remember once twenty years or so ago when I was carpooling with another lawyer to work. We heard a story on the radio about a letter bomb that had been sent to a federal judge in another state.

The reporter said that there was a new “exclusive” report that the typewriter used for the label was an X brand portable. We just looked at each other, and I said, “There’s one typewriter going into a river tonight.”

Of course, the reporters get the “scoops” from their sources in law enforcement who get stroked to give leaks.

The Muslim extremist Religious Speech Act of 2012.

It grants ALL religions protection from speech that, if applied to Muslims, could elicit hurt feelings or even incite violence.

Since the U.S. Government cannot favor one religion over another, they MUST apply the same rules for ALL religions.

Speech against Christians, Jews, Catholics, Protestants and their religious beliefs and practices are as thoroughly spoken out against as is defamatory speech against Muslims, for you never know when such speech could erupt in justifiable violence.

Every single public critic of the obama regime should be asking himself today: How will my government and its sharia media describe ME when they come for ME? Did I have an ugly divorce? Have I ever had an affair? Have I ever bounced a check? Do I have any bills I haven’t paid? Do any of my neighbors hate me? Is there anyone out there with any kind of grievance against me who would be useful to the regime? Did I get arrested on a DUI 20 years ago? How about ‘public urination’ one night while I was drunk in college? Did I ever punch a guy who had it coming? Have I ever been fired from a job?

Yeah. Good luck explaining that to the 200 vicious sharia journalists in your front yard.

I remember years ago watching the news with my dad, an avid hunter. And they were discussing some guy who had been arrested for something or other, I don’t recall, might have been a hit and run accident. And the reporter says, “When police executed a search warrant on the man’s home, they found more than a dozen guns and hundreds of round of ammunition. Police are describing him as a ‘gun nut.’”

And my dad kind of chuckled and said, “Look around here. I’ve got two gun cabinets, about 20 different guns, and thousands of rounds of ammo. I’ve belonged to the NRA for 30 years and have their magazine lying around here. I never miss opening day of deer season. I take my kids to the range to pluck at targets. I’ve never broken a law in my life, go to work every day, and have raised a great family. And if I ever get arrested for something and the police come in here, they’ll call me a ‘gun nut,’ too, and my life will be over just like that poor guy’s.” He said this, like, 30 years ago. Smart guy, my dad, may he RIP.

A murder of Ernst vom Rath is said to start the knight of the broken glass. But as history is still of what was said is lost and was said to the people in speeches about the murder that gave justification for the in time murder of 6 million Jews.

What was said about this video by the media and Imams in the east and what was said to the people in the street on what was said about the drone strike on AlQ’s #2.

I’d also like to point out that when Islamo-Nazis, half a world away, kill our diplomats, Obama’s solution is to turn the State against the citizens of this country. Obama’s done nothing but divide and harass states and citizens of these United States. Even when something happens far far away, his administration still finds a way to make Americans the target of his wrath.

Weight of Glory on September 15, 2012 at 4:35 PM

When Mike Wallace died, there were so many tributes about what a wonderful journalist he was, but a few conservative sites reminded us of his and so many other journalists’ “ethics” in this anecdote:

On an edition of the PBS panel series “Ethics in America,” devoted to war coverage, which was taped at Harvard in late 1987, Mike Wallace proclaimed that if he were traveling with enemy soldiers he would not warn U.S. soldiers of an impending ambush.

“Don’t you have a higher duty as an American citizen to do all you can to save the lives of soldiers rather than this journalistic ethic of reporting fact?”, moderator Charles Ogletree Jr. suggested.

Without hesitating, Wallace responded: “No, you don’t have higher duty…you’re a reporter.”

When Brent Scrowcroft, the then-future National Security Adviser, argued that “you’re Americans first, and you’re journalists second,” Wallace was mystified by the concept, wondering “what in the world is wrong with photographing this attack by [the imaginary] North Kosanese on American soldiers?”

George Connell, a Marine Corps Colonel, reacted with disdain: “I feel utter contempt. Two days later they’re [the journalists] both walking off my hilltop, they’re two hundred yards away and they get ambushed. And they’re lying there wounded. And they’re going to expect I’m going to send Marines up there to get them. They’re just journalists, they’re not Americans.”

The discussion concluded as Connell fretted: “But I’ll do it. And that’s what makes me so contemptuous of them. And Marines will die, going to get a couple of journalists.

Peter Jennings was on the panel, and first said he would warn the US soldiers, but then caved when Wallace scolded him on camera.

The only “ethics” modern journalists seem to have is not to reveal the source, but that’s because they want to keep the leaks coming that further the journalists’ careers.

Whether we like it or not-people in the mid east think different than
us.

they have extreme unemployment-especially among young men-and they spend most of their time getting agitated.

think of our own ghetto riots.

the Koran backs them up then BOOM!

it’s not right in modern times but it is what it is.

Can’t seem to find it anymore.
It alleged that this guy was actually a plant.
Haven’t seen any corroborating articles.
Would be quite a twist if true.

Gotta go.

The first media outlet I’m aware that outed the name of the filmmaker is Gawker. You’d think that a publishing outfit that specializes in a mixture of vulgarity & stupidity would at least have some understanding of the importance of freedom of speech, but these disgusting people had no problem placing a target on one who dared insult the holly prophet.

As David Horowitz has noted, the Left & the Islamists are united in their hatred of America, and that seems to lead to these instances of strategic cooperation.

That selective enforcement can be used to prevent any behavior they wish.

There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”

Best idea I’ve heard. Yes, unfortunately I am getting to “that” point of being sick and tired of being sick and tired of our “apologetic” administration. *spit*

This, and what dcarter1 said at the top. We are occupied, by an enemy who is trying to destroy my country. The press is a disgusting and insidious foe who is protecting choom-head at all costs. They are my enemy, along with anyone who is disengaged enough to drink the kool-aid, not do their homework, and fall for the talking points of this shameful group of f@#koffs who will not do their job. The major news outlets have all turned into National Enquirer, and they think it’s all a big joke. They also think they are so smart and sophisticated while they “beclown” themselves daily. It’s a travesty. But, mark my words, their days are numbered, and so are choom-head’s. Out.

Ed morrisey is just as culpable as anybody from the conservative side for empowering this idiocy. He is the one who demanded that Robert Spencer of jihad watch be fired from hotair and banned any blogs from being linked here that focus upon the Islamic encroachment and enforcement of sharia law and criticism of it. A glaring example is Pamela Geller from atlas shrugs, one of the biggest political blogs per internet traffic in the world yet you’ll never see ANY article or link from her site on hotair. Why?, because she draws the left’s and politically correct crowd’s ire for daring to critique Islamic law, the left’s new sacred cow, which is what this whole situation after all is about. But linking to any site that focuses on this issues might not get ED into the big leagues so he canbe “respected”, after all media matters might write a scathing post then about how Ed Morrisey is an “Islamophobe”. A lot of goddam nerve he has getting on high horse now about it

SailorMark on September 15, 2012 at 5:04 PM

Why? Because Geller’s a racist, that’s why, a racist who captions photos of youth campers at Utoya Island in Norway thus:

“Note the faces which are more MIddle [sic] Eastern or mixed than pure Norwegian.”

But then you probably think that’s kosher.

Excuse my mixed metaphor.

lostmotherland on September 15, 2012 at 5:06 PM

To everyone posting here today: When they come for YOU, and they get their hands on YOUR computer, and YOUR logins, and the sites YOU visit, you’ll be described in the media as: “An anti-government fanatic who posted racist and incendiary messages on the internet.” Good luck trying to explain why that’s a lie to the 200 sharia journalists in your front yard.

What is happening today to this guy in California needs to be SHUT DOWN hard, and the feds need to face SEVERE blowback for it. If they don’t (and I do not believe they will), then today was a very, very good day for them. They will be emboldened beyond anything you or I can imagine. When they make this guy an offer he can’t refuse, and he comes out all apologetic about his “evil” film, and barack and shrillery smile and shake hands, we will officially be living in a tyranny. It would be advisable that folks STOP posting on the internet that very day and go as deep underground as they can, because the tyrants will just be getting started.

Did you know there was a huge free speech conference specifically focusing on this very subject at the U.N plaza on 9/11?, it featured speakers from all over the world including lars Vilks, the danish cartoonist marked for death for daring to draw pictures of the prophet Mohhomad. The central theme was the imposition of Free speech limitations in Western Society in order to appease Muslims who demand enforcement of censorship. It was organized by Pamela Geller

This is the crux of what we are dealing with now, yet if you read HOTAIR, you will never have known about it because any criticism of Islam is not tolerated amongst the Blogger Elite. Including Ed and Allah It will prevent their careers from advancing into more mainstream roles.

golembythehudson on September 15, 2012 at 5:09 PM

you got to admit this is a very odd story. some guy with a history of bank fraud, and meth, is somehow associated with a vid that seems to be hacked together that becomes a cause of concern…and the story is that he is a Coptic Christian.

the left media had already indicted Terry jones the pastor…with various officials on high beseeching him to not show it…and it turns out that jones had never seen it…but that he would pray for its maker.

but this guy just claims to be the ‘logistical manager’…that could be a simple as renting the studio and acquiring the green screen imagery….but…now really…who is behind this? who are the brains? In whose interest is this? A true Copt, one would think, be afraid of the harm done to his brothers in Christ in Egypt
