Three universities get terrorist threats, two evacuate campuses

posted at 12:41 pm on September 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Has the Islamist rage aimed at US embassies abroad started to reach into the heartland of America?  Three separate universities report receiving threats this morning, prompting evacuations in Texas, North Dakota, and an investigation in Indiana. Let’s start with the University of Texas, where the threat was explicit about a tie to al-Qaeda:

Threatening caller spurs UT evacuation

The University of Texas is evacuating all of its buildings due to threats on campus after a caller claiming to be with al-Qaida said he placed bombs all over campus that would go off around 10 a.m. — which has since passed.

“Immediately evacuate ALL buildings and get as far away as possible,” read a message posted at 9:53 a.m. on the campus’ emergency alert website. “More information to come.”

UT Director of Communications Rhonda Weldon said the university got a call around 8:35 a.m. from a male with a Middle Eastern accent claiming to have placed bombs all over campus.

He said he was with al-Qaida and that these bombs would go off in 90 minutes.

North Dakota State followed shortly thereafter:

Students at North Dakota State University in Fargo and the University of Texas in Austin have been ordered to evacuate their respective campuses this morning because of bomb threats.

There was no indication that the two events were connected.

This alert was posted on NDSU’s website:

“NDSU is requiring all employees and students to leave campus by 10:15 a.m. This includes residence hall students, who, if necessary, should walk to locations off campus. This also includes the downtown buildings and agricultural facilities. NDSU received a bomb threat, prompting this evacuation. Updates will follow.”

At Valparaiso University in Indiana, the threat was left as a graffiti message, but no evacuation was apparently ordered:

The alert, posted early Friday, says “an unspecific threat to campus was made through a graffiti message alluding to dangerous and criminal activity alleged to be carried out during the chapel break period on Friday.

“The broad threat provided no details with respect to location or type. Please be on alert and report any suspicious activity to VUPD immediately by calling 911 or 464-5430.”

VUPD, local authorizes and the FBI investigated the threat and a thorough human and canine search of campus did not find anything suspicious, a later release said.

Fortunately, no attacks have come to pass, at least not yet.  These are likely efforts to create a little fear on the cheap, taking advantage of the unrest on the other side of the world.  Real AQ attacks don’t usually involve any warnings, certainly not specific warnings that allow civilians to get out of the line of fire.  The purpose of AQ attacks is usually to create as many civilian deaths as possible. Of course, this could be a way to test defenses, too, to adapt to American countermeasures, although there wouldn’t be much point of that if no warnings precede attacks.

I’m guessing that these are hoaxes, but that doesn’t mean that the perpetrators should be discounted.  The FBI and the courts need to make examples of them, if so.

Unless it is down to get a large group of people to gather together.

Al Qaeda has stated that they have cells in the United States. Very well could be hoaxes but the confluence of events is considerable. In the last 72-96 hrs, attacks in Libya, Cairo, Tunisia, Sudan and now this. It seems as if some folks are trying to throw the world into a tailspin.

I am currently on that campus and I can tell you that I am feeling a little uneasy (if you went to the college alluded to in your screen name). Not for any specific reason, just that there are multiple campuses affected.

I have seen some theories that the threats were called in to observe how quickly people leave, what routes they take, etc.

It is interesting that two of the three threats occurred in border states.

Anybody following David Horowitz of some of the leading expatriate Mulsims who fled Islam knew this was coming. The Islamic project has always been about using our laws and sensibilities against us. The war on free speech and the war to carve out Muslims as a protected species has been going on from the beginning. They never had to launch another terrorist attack on America. They’ve now succeeded in turning our government into censors and our citzens into scared suspects.

None of our ruling class has gotten it. Bush never got it. Obama actually colludes in it. We’ve increasingly marginalized as extreme and socially unacceptable the sane and studied authorities on Islamic intention.

God save us.

And I’m sick of clueless liberals such as Hillary Clinton apologizing for an American film, which the film maker has every to make as a reason for the riots-which it most manifestly WAS NOT. I only wish Hillary (and Obama) would treat Christians with the same deference.Or that ninny of a General pleading with the film maker to cease and desist.
Anybody who knows anything about Islam knows it is a three tiered society-
1 At the top are the TRUE BELIEVERS. Your choice-if you feel like descending into the ubiquitously poverty and disease ridden 7th century and joining Islam-you have arrived–otherwise-there are two other options

2 SUBSERVIENT NONBELIEVERS. Here you choose not to join the faith but acquiesce to being ruled by them as virtual slaves.

3 NONBELIEVING INFIDELS WHO DISPUTE ISLAM’S CLAIM TO WORLD DOMINANCE. Here you become the subject of Holy War (Jihad) and Islamists can do to you whatever they please including rape, sodomy, murder with impunity under Koranic Law.

So whenever a liberal (or that jerk John McCain- if you saw him last night on Hannity)- believes that we can live “in harmony” with Islam MUST be referring to either option 1 or 2. None other are available.

Note: First attempt to post this got moderated because I replaced sesquipedalian’s name with the s word for the mythical hairy beast that supposedly resides in American forests.

NC – this IS a rhetorical question, right?

OhEssYouCowboys on September 14, 2012 at 1:14 PM

For you and I it is. I don’t believe sesquipedalian understands the fact that an attack on an embassy is an attack on that nation directly. I don’t believe he understands that attacking an embassy is the same thing as attacking any government facility within the United States, because that embassy is part of the United States. He properly thinks embassies are just fancy hotels for foreign diplomats.

and let’s not forget his favorite strawman of the past couple of days……………THAT MOVIE!!!!

Prior to Muhammed’s arrival in 700 AD, Arab countries were among the world’s leaders in mathematics, architecture, science, and astronomy. Since Muhammed, no Arab country has produced even a decent dime store novel. Lean forward, eh Obama?

We possibly do if Belgium protects said madman. Was there or was there not a military response to the embassy attacks in Africa under Clinton?

NotCoach on September 14, 2012 at 1:25 PM

guess Obama’s eyes have the mist from the smoke of a distant fire.

kingsjester on September 14, 2012 at 1:21 PM

well played!!

He will look mad during the presser which will be sincere as he was only able to get in 14 holes and the jacket they brought him doesn’t go with today’s shirt.

NC, I know. I just wanted to give you a reason to beat the poor soul with a stick, again.

OMG, how could I have overlooked THAT MOVIE.

That dastardly MOVIE that has so offended the sensibilities of the peace-loving religion in the ME.

If it weren’t for THAT MOVIE, well…shucks…there would be nothing but unicorns and skittles all over the ME.

I know this because Hill & Barky told me so.

Press to blame TEA Party in 3..2..1..

SailorMark on September 14, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Fortunately, no attacks have come to pass, at least not yet. These are likely efforts to create a little fear on the cheap

whatever, just don’t stop rethorically running around like headless chicken and screaming THE WORLD IS ON FIRE!

sesquipedalian on September 14, 2012 at 12:55 PM

It must be so very painful to be as ignorant as you, Yellow Gerbil.
Mom won’t allow you to watch TV? What did you do this time? Pee on the rug?

HA !!!!
Are you equating today’s protesters to madmen ?
Dear Lord, that is funny.

Jabberwock on September 14, 2012 at 1:32 PM

These are almost certainly hoaxes. The problem is this many hoaxes would never be successfully perpetrated across the entire country if the damn Middle East wasn’t in flames right now. And that can be laid at the feet of this administration.

It’s bad enough to fear an economic collapse if Obama is reelected. But to have to worry on a daily basis now about al-Queda and its sympathizers terrorizing US embassies and even our schools here at home?
