Quotes of the day

posted at 9:56 pm on September 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

The US consulate in Benghazi, where the US ambassador to Libya died in an attack on Tuesday, was not given the standard security contract offered to many American diplomatic missions in the Middle East, private military contractors have told the BBC…

Meanwhile the attackers appeared to know exactly where staff were being taken to and fired on a second building supposed to be a safe haven, prompting suspicions they had a prior informant inside the mission…

Given the unstable security situation in Benghazi and eastern Libya that has developed this year, it is surprising that security precautions for such a sensitive diplomatic mission were not more robust.

***

The State Department told reporters Friday afternoon that it won’t answer any more questions about the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans until the investigation into the incident is complete…

All aspects of the attack, including what led up to it, its causes, the identity of the perpetrators, and the circumstances surrounding the death of Amb. Chris Stevens and the other three Americans, are off limits for reporters.

The new policy leaves many questions about the Benghazi attack unanswered, potentially for a long time, such as the identity of the attackers, whether they were connected to protests earlier in the day in Cairo, what were the exact circumstances and cause of Stevens’s death, whether the administration had indications of the threat beforehand, and whether the consulate’s security was adequate or not.

US President Barack Obama’s Middle East policy is in ruins. Like no president before him, he tried to win over the Arab world. After some initial hesitation, he came out clearly on the side of the democratic revolutions. … In this context, he must accept the fact that he has snubbed old close allies such as Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Egyptian military. And now parts of the freed societies are turning against the country which helped bring them into being. Anti-Americanism in the Arab world has even increased to levels greater than in the Bush era. It’s a bitter outcome for Obama.”

Obama was naive to believe that one only needed to adopt a new tone and show more respect in order to dispel deep-seated reservations about the free world. In practice, the policies of the Obama administration in the region were not as naive as they may have seemed at times, and the Americans have always been much more involved in the Middle East than the passive Europeans. But Washington has provided the image of a distracted superpower in the process of decline to the societies there. This image of weakness is being exploited by Salafists and al-Qaida, who are active in North Africa from Somalia to Mali.

One thing is clear: If jihadists believe they can attack American installations and kill an ambassador on the anniversary of Sept. 11, then America’s deterrent power has declined considerably. For a superpower, it is not enough just to want to be loved. You have to scare the bad guys to keep them in check.

If one well-known Pakistani politician gets his way, international law will forbid “anti-Islam” material from the Internet.

Friday afternoon, Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik wrote in a series of tweets that he has spoken with and written to the Secretary General of Interpol about enacting an international law to stop all anti-Islam propaganda online.

I have defended the Obama administration against the complaints from the right that they have run an “apology tour” in the Middle East because I believe the US should admit when we make mistakes, such as the accidental burning of Korans. But what we shouldn’t do is affirm the wrongheaded view that people should be protected from the free speech of others.

Worse, our leaders shouldn’t let our enemies know that when they kill our people and attack our embassies that the US Government will act like a battered wife making excuses for her psychotic husband. Wake up: we weren’t attacked because of a movie made by an American. We were attacked because there are crazy religious fanatics who hate the United States. We didn’t ask for it…

Apparently our foreign policy is now being run by Dr. Phil. Someone needs to explain to the White House that our Constitution protects freedom of religion from government interference, not the protection from people who say mean, critical or offensive things about one’s religion…

It’s time for the Obama administration to stop blaming the victim.

***

Our response to anti-authoritarian movements has been confused. It varies from place to place. When the Iranians marched to protest a fraudulent election in 2009, Obama did nothing. When the Egyptians marched against Hosni Mubarak, an American ally, in 2011, the White House hemmed and hawed and finally threw its weight behind people power. Mubarak fell. What we neglected to notice was that the revolution in Egypt had not actually occurred. Other generals simply took over from Mubarak and tried to slow down the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood…

Egyptian politics have assumed a new and terrifying dynamic, with the Brotherhood attempting to triangulate between the Salafists who own the street and the Americans who provide economic and military assistance and debt relief. The casualties of this triangulation may include the peace treaty with Israel and the potential of Egyptian democracy. If the president has a plan to deal with this mess, we have yet to hear it…

This is the broken and anxiety-ridden world Barack Obama has made. Our adversaries are stronger. America and her allies are weaker. And yet, after spending practically a decade blaming every last thing, including the bad weather, on President Bush, the media seem determinedly uninterested in ascribing even the slightest amount of responsibility to President Obama.

Who’s ready for four more years?

TAPPER: Wouldn’t it seem logical that the anniversary of 9/11 would be a time that you would want to have extra security around diplomats and military posts?

CARNEY: Well, as you know, there — we are very vigilant around anniversaries like 9/11. The president is always briefed and brought up to speed on all the precautions being taken. But let’s be -

TAPPER: Obviously not vigilant enough.

“If Mitt Romney had kept his mouth shut, if he had not acted like a rank amateur, if he had not embarrassed himself–and by the way internally the campaign understands they screwed up, he’s moved on, they know that. So no conservative can say “oh, the mainstream media, blah, blah.” They know how badly they screwed up, and they were having the fight internally before he even went out and did it. But Romney got in the way of the media looking at the president, going, wha-, wha-, what happened here? How did this happen? Now, those questions are going to be asked in the coming weeks. But they weren’t asked in the first 24 hours because Romney was holding this horrific, irresponsible, press conference.”

Absolutely 100% insane. Islam is a real threat to us and the world. We better stop the political correct bs once and for all. “A great religion” per Hilary Clinton yesterday.
As far as the election, keep in mind that Republican numbers peaked in September of 2010 right at the height of the Ground Zero Mosque furor, where, despite overwhelming public opposition, one by one the Dems marched out in support of the crazy idea… and that ground zero mosque is still going forward today! To the extent that we rouse sentiment similar to that expressed about the GZ Mosque, we win the election. For good reason. Islam is a real threat.

US consulate in Benghazi ‘did not have enough security’

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/09/14/Colonel-Says-Hillary-Clinton-Made-Decision-to-Have-No-Marines-at-Benghazi

Plus the article from the Independent yesterday that there was warning to the State Department 48 h prior to the Libya consulate attack. which the Barry White House tried to parse by saying that there was no “actionable” information.

Some house committee needs to have hearings on Barry/Hillary’s failures very soon.

This is far worse than Carter. When the Iranians took over the Embassy in 1979, no one was killed until the failed rescue attempt of Operation Eagle Claw in 1980. When Carter was President, I thought he was incompetent, but at least at that time I didn’t think his foreign policy was designed to coddle enemies and snub friends.

Our side needs to figure out how to get the MSM to cover such press conferences. I remember a couple of years ago, Rush had asked one of the Republicans in Congress why they didn’t do like the democrats did — run out with a muffler and a couple of elected officials and have a press conference. He was told, “We do, the press never shows up”. I know this is reality and we have to figure out how to deal with it, but the question is how to counter this problem.

My one Grandpa taught me what it meant to be a conservative. I still remember that conversation to this day.

I think that is one reason I get so angry – Obama and his ilk don’t understand history or don’t care about it. They don’t get what made this country great and what people gave up so that we could have our freedom.

gophergirl on September 14, 2012 at 10:30 PM

I despise Obama and his administration’s policies. Having said that, it was Bush 43 who started all the “Islam is peace” crapola after 9/11. If memory serves, he also sent Karen Hughes out on some kind of half-assed Muslim outreach listening tour. It was also Republicans like McCain who attacked Steve King and Bachmann when they tried to alert us of the insidious nature of Muslim Brotherhood infiltration; thank you Senator McCain, Keith Ellison couldn’t have scripted it better. The point is that the rot in our political class and other elites goes much deeper than Obama and his Chicago flunkies.

Who other than a total narcissist retard would say something like that? Seriously, this jackass must have a mirror in his toilet bowl so he can look down and admire his own ass.

I don’t know what happened to my post.

The father of Glen Doherty, the former Navy Seal murdered in Benghazi, was one of the sharpshooters in the 3 sniper teams firing in simultaneous shoots, from a US warship back in 2009, and took out the 3 Somali pirates holed up in a bobbing lifeboat where the Captain of the cargo ship Maeersk Alabama was held hostage.

The corrupt press’ failure to cover these attacks is more dangerous to America than the attacks themselves.

AZfederalist on September 14, 2012 at 10:28 PM

I know that’s true, but goddammit, they’ve got power in their numbers. Get yourselves on every news show, every radio show, and speak with ONE VOICE. Every time you get asked a question, use your answer to BURY barack in his sea of failure. Watch the Sunday shows this weekend. There won’t by any Republicans on them, and they’d get on if they asked. They won’t ask. It’s just too, too scary for most of ‘em.

Can Michelle Malkin be appointed as a reporter to the State Dept? Or maybe Dana Loesch? Those are two journalists that wouldn’t acquiesce to the State’s edict. It’s unbelievable what Democrats get away with.

I do not think that is actually accurate. Bush did try to reach out to Muslims in places like Afghanistan and Iraq to try and give us some allies on the ground. He made a point of differentiating between AlQaida and people who were not actually terrorists..but he also projected enough strength that some of this was tamped down. There is more anti Americanism today than there was when Bush was in there. So, the fact that he did not go out of his way to declare war on the entire religion does not make him responsible for this craziness.

And so, it begins.

I agree, and it has so many Americans so steaming pissed off that there is a real opening here for Romney and the GOP — if only they’d take it. Make the regime media COMPLICIT in the deaths of Americans, as complicit as barack’s imploding foreign policy is. Spread hatred and loathing of them and their despicable propaganda until they are drummed out of the public square. It. Is. Time.

One thing is clear: If jihadists believe they can attack American installations and kill an ambassador on the anniversary of Sept. 11, then America’s deterrent power has declined considerably.

He did say he wanted to fundamentally transform the United States of America, didn’t he ?
If only someone had asked him what exactly he meant by that !
But I’m guessing the Mooch is finally proud of her country, so it’s all halal, what are a few dead bodies and burning US flags,
afterall burning a US flag is a gang initiation for Democrats anyway.

thatsafactjack on September 14, 2012 at 10:00 PM

THIS.

Protestors don’t carry rocket launchers. Terrorists do.

And the MSM and Obama supporters attacking Romney for standing up for the first amendment and pretending that is the reason the MSM is still refusing to question Obama’s utter incompetence and apologizing — even today! –for the first amendment? Those people who would not even have jobs if it wasn’t for the First Amendment? They not only disgrace the memory of people like Daniel Pearl, they can kiss my *ss.

I’m completely ashamed of this president, his administration and the PRAVDA MSM aiding & abetting him.

Dark Star on September 14, 2012 at 10:45 PM

All aspects of the attack, including what led up to it, its causes, the identity of the perpetrators, and the circumstances surrounding the death of Amb. Chris Stevens and the other three Americans, are off limits for reporters.

If any of the white house press had any balls they’d be saying – who the hell do you think you are to tell me something is off limits. You work for me, asshole, not the other way around.

But Romney got in the way of the media looking at the president, going, wha-, wha-, what happened here? How did this happen? Now, those questions are going to be asked in the coming weeks. But they weren’t asked in the first 24 hours because Romney was holding this horrific, irresponsible, press conference.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Over.

The press was incapable of following up on trying to find out what happened because of a press release and a twitter comment by the presidential challenger to Obama? Really? The MSM is acknowledging that it is so single-mindedly focused on attacking the Republican candidate that it was unable to its job of investigating and finding out what happened in Egypt and Libya and didn’t have the bandwidth to follow up with the President? This isn’t an indictment of candidate Romney, this is an indictment of the press for being unable to spread its attention anywhere than on the candidate they are trying to defeat.
