Libyan officials announce four arrests in Benghazi consulate attack

posted at 8:41 am on September 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Libyan officials this morning announced the arrest of four people in the attack on the American consulate that ended with the murder of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. Who are the suspects? So far the Libyans aren’t sharing much about their identities, but they’re not looking for random rioters. NBC News reports that the Libyans are convinced that the riot was a deliberate cover to get to the American personnel:

So far, the US isn’t going that far, holding off on any accusations of a planned terrorist attack. If true, it would prompt further questions about American intel and preparedness on such an obvious target date as the anniversary of 9/11. Questions have already arisen over the lack of effective security and the apparent exposure of a prepared safe house.  If this was a planned operation by al-Qaeda, which has filled the vacuum left in the eastern part of the country by the Western-led toppling of the Qaddafi regime, it will be a huge public-relations boon for the terrorist network, which has been on its heels for the last several years.  It’s interesting to note, though, that no one has yet credibly claimed credit for Stevens’ assassination.

The Libyan government has acted with much more energy in response to the riot than the Egyptian government in Cairo has with the ongoing protests there.  That’s certainly a demonstration of the relative strength of alliances in the region.

Meanwhile, they’ve finally posted the WH schedule for today :

pambi on September 14, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Typical Øbama schedule. Virtually no business of state being done here, outside of fund raising and social/recreational events.

The guy is not being the president; he’s playing at being the president. He is the empty chair. The sizzle without the steak. The grin without the cat.

BTW, when was the last time he held a Cabinet meeting?

petefrt on September 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM

According to other reports I’ve read (mainly in foreign papers), these four arrests are for minor stuff. The four arrested will probably be charged with offenses like trespassing or vandalism. IOW, they were identified as being part of the mob scene protests (used as cover by the terrorists), but they are not part of the AQ gang that kidnapped, probably raped (possibly tortured, judging by the condition of the ambassador’s body in the photos), and murdered the four Americans.

Of course, the Obama crotch-sniffing MSM won’t report that these guys were insignificant bit players. They’ll just emphasize that multiple arrests were made “in connection with” the Libyan murders. Don’t worry, voters, Barry is taking charge and making sure justice is done!

What a travesty.

AZCoyote on September 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM

I used to spin them too but I figured the head has to come off and the blood drained anyway, why not get it over with? Besides, there is nothing funnier than introducing the youngsters to the process and seeing the chickens eerily run right towards the kids.

So they rounded up 4 people on their hit list and accused them. This is not at all unsusal in by these people.

Libyan officials announce four arrests in Benghazi consulate attack

Akhmed, Maumed, Rasoul and Jerry were walking down the street, heading for their favorite fallafal stand when the Libyan cops swooped down and carted them away. Had nothing to do with the embassy attack. But, since the Obama White House promised an arrest or two, they seemed to fit the bill.

This whole meme that these attacks were in “protest” over some dumb anti-Mohammedan film is a distraction. The 9-11 2012 Benghazi attack was orchestrated by AQ-North Africa…not to protest, but to seek revenge for Obama’s much touted killing of OBL.

In other news, the Religion of Peace is killing, burning, destroying all over the place. Isn’t it about time we finally admitted that their “religion” is nothing less than an organized terror movement? And acted accordingly?

We begin bombing in 5 minutes.

Kenosha Kid on September 14, 2012 at 11:07 AM

The Libyans need to deliver the high-level guys that put this plan into motion. Handing us a few low-level functionaries isn’t good enough, as far as I’m concerned. I want the guys that issued the orders.

Scapegoats….I wouldn’t be surprised if they were actually bystanders or in individuals in the wrong place at the wrong time…the salafists who co-ordinated the attack are probably planning the next one from a safe place…

Haven’t heard from the Ron Paulian “foreign affairs diplomatic think tank” on the Middle East uprisings.

Is this what you thought it would be or just another tough day?

Nope. You missed the mark on that one. If the riots weren’t about the movie (or the religion) as you correctly noted, then the attacks couldn’t really be caused by the religion. Islam is a tool that is being used by would-be Middle East power brokers to manipulate the gullible and the dispossessed–just like the race baiters use race in our own country. They do it to promote themselves, not the cause that they claim to represent.

Oh, I’m quite sure that the lybians have arrested somebody; and that – after proper “interrogation” by the authorities – they will be dutifully hung.

Justice will have been done.

And lil barry will prance and preen and tell us all of the wonderful ‘co-operation’ that he was able to arrange with our lybian “allies”. (With, of course a speech from TOTUS filled with “I”, “me”, “my”, dominating the narrative. After all, he did kill osama.)

And then — the same thing will happen again; because our enemies in the Middle East know that America is a paper tiger. That there is no reason, whatsoever, to fear “the most powerful country in the world”. (Until, of course, we get an actual American as president.)

(I wonder how long it will be until we get an “executive order” outlawing “blasphemy” – in the interest of ‘world peace’?)

Solaratov on September 14, 2012 at 11:27 AM

Nevermind all this talk about dead embassy staff and planned attacks…the big question is, when will Mitt Romney apologize?

changer1701 on September 14, 2012 at 8:57 AM

Apologize”? That’s not nearly enough. The only way that Mitt can properly atone for ‘jumping the gun‘ would be to withdraw from the race and retire permanently from public life. In fact, ritual Seppuku (切腹) would not be too much to demand, under the circumstances.

In a country that has so many tribal rivalries, how much do you want to bet that the “offenders” happen to belong to a less-popular tribe or happen to follow the wrong Imam?

Somehow, I don’t think justice will be served.

Hill60 on September 14, 2012 at 11:54 AM

Relative strength of alliances, or just boot-shaking fear that we might start bombing Libya again? I’m sure they know there are Marines and a warship headed their way.

I know, it’s cynical, but when it comes to Muslim countries and past history, how can I help myself?

RebeccaH on September 14, 2012 at 11:56 AM

If this were indeed an assassination, Ambassador Stevens would have been shot — and probably shot in the head — as a reminder of what we Americans did to bin Ladin. I’m betting they would have done other things to him beforehand — that’s the kind of people they are.

Instead, it sounds like Stevens died of smoke inhalation — not the normal methods used by Al Qaeda.

I think this was a demonstration that got out of hand. Libya is awash in weapons, and our Commander in Chief hates American security companies so much — the Haliburtons and the Blackwaters — he hates them so much that he is loath to use them. Stevens had exactly two Marines with him, and both died.

Either it was Mr. Obama’s decision to forego security, or the Chief of Mission’s decision — and either way, it was a stupid one.

Silly liberals….

With all due respect, this is nonsense on stilts. You’re begging the question. You assume that this wasn’t intentional, and conclude that it wasn’t intentional, ignoring all the evidence to the contrary that it was intentional. Frankly, I’m not felling that chritable, and I’m not inclined to indulge on wishful thinking on this one.

At the end of the day, the intent is really quite secondary here. The main thing here is that our diplomatic mission was attacked in their country, and their measures to protect it were insufficient, at best (as were our own).

Utter tripe.

The “demonstration” was planned and coordinated with the other attacks on our embassies. It was an act of ‘terrorism’/war.

Haliburton is not a security company. Blackwater no longer exists. It is now Xi.

There were NO Marines with the ambassador. There were two private contractors (at least one of whom was an ex-SEAL).

Why do we have JDAMs and UAVs fitted with Hellfire Missiles if we’re not prepared to defend ourselves with them. A few of those pinpointed at several of these mobs might make the point that we could easily do more if we decided to. Call it the Mahsha-allah (“God has willed it.”) policy.
