Is Obama channeling Jimmy Carter?

posted at 10:01 am on September 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, Barack Obama responded somewhat obliquely to Mitt Romney’s criticism over the statement issued by the Cairo embassy by painting him as a loose cannon.  He told CBS reporter Steve Kroft that “Governor Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later.”  Charlie Spiering noticed that Obama seemed to be channeling another American President with those words — and perhaps the worst one Obama could choose, under the circumstances, emphasis mine:

Obama’s remarks, however, echo frequent criticisms made by President Jimmy Carter of Ronald Reagan, then his opponent for the presidency.

Carter criticized Reagan’s views on foreign policy during his speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1980, slamming Reagan for living in a “fantasy world” and noting his inability to understand the “complex global changes” in foreign policy.

“It’s a make believe world. A world of good guys and bad guys, where some politicians shoot first and ask questions later,” Carter said, “No hard choices. No sacrifice. No tough decisions. It sounds too good to be true – and it is. The path of fantasy leads to irresponsibility. The path of reality leads to hope and peace.”

I chatted with Guy Benson yesterday in a pre-tape for his weekend radio show, and happened to casually mention that the polling in this election reminded me of the 1980 cycle.  Coming out of that convention, Carter enjoyed a sustained bump throughout September, and kept emphasizing Ronald Reagan’s simplistic view of the world and the danger of his “shoot first” attitude.  That scare-mongering over Reagan worked — for a very short period of time.  In the end, voters decided that it was just a cover for Carter to escape being held responsible for his incompetence in foreign policy and the poor state of the economy.

If Obama wants to run the 1980 Democratic playbook all over again, that’s fine by me.  Meanwhile, Spiering and I aren’t the only ones hearing the faint echoes of “Welcome Back, Carter.”  Michael Ramirez captures the essence of the 1979 deja vu, complete down to the cheesy smile that supposedly sells malaise:

Also, be sure to check out Ramirez’ terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives fascinating look at political history.  Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here.  And don’t forget to check out the entire Investors.com site, which has now incorporated all of the former IBD Editorials, while individual investors still exist.

For future nominees, an easy way to remember The Obama Doctrine is simply to memorize the acronym for it: GASBAG.

Ed,
Obama has Carter’s flaws but unfortunately he has none of Carter’s good points. And yes there were a few. Carter knew what hard work was and was willing to do it. He could handle criticism too.
Obama is lazy and thin skinned. He really is an empty chair.

Ford (R)
Carter (D)
Reagan (R)

The (R)s all got off the stage. The (D)s all stayed on the stage.

I’ve thought of Obama post-Presidency, if, we hope, he loses Nov 6, what do you suppose he’ll do? Get off the stage? No way! But … he’s so ineffectual, and without accomplishment or real ability, or policy interests … what would he do? Preside over the building of a 100′ statue of himself? Speak on race and right-wing extremists? Tour Africa and the Middle East, preaching peace, and the equal exceptionalism of everyone? What?

Ed,

First, a disclaimer. Just ingested a kruller so my blood sugar levels are up this morning. As I listened to your fine show yesterday with GB and MKH, I detected a downward spiraling denouement as you three assayed Romney’s chances vis a vis the electoral count.

All three of you seemed somewhat gloomier than I thought you need be.

Coming to the point, it’s intuition and it’s anecdotal on my part, having lived through the terrible 1979-1980 campaign. There was anger abroad in the land and the individual motivation to dump Carter arose as we stewed over the 444 day hostage scenario. We also suffered under a suffocating blanket of alphabet MSM coverage. You guys were still in swaddling clothes and the internet was but a gleam in ManBearPig’s eye.

Today, this current M.E. blowup is Hostage Crisis 2.0 — upgraded and condensed for the modern, less-patient short attention-span youth. You all get a compressed version of what took 14 months to unfold back then. Things happen at warp speed in 24-hour chapters. You also get a three-for: Now there’s Libya, Egypt, and Iran.

But I prattle.

Bottom line is this: I cannot resolve my internal seething anger over the stunts, shenanigans, drek, and incompetence perpetrated by this regime. The desperate attempt by a waning MSM to control events has become truly pathetic, their latest tools of trade being the coordinated question of the opposition and the results shown in the manipulation and skewing of the pools. I just do not believe that Obama is as popular as he appears to be.

This latest foreign policy travesty — his sashaying out to Vegas to fundraise while the M.E. boils over just tears it for me.

Rosalyn Carter certainly was the ice queen at Reagan’s 1981 inaguration. It was conspicuous, because back then there was a little more value placed upon public decorum and self-control. Her thundercloud of bitterness on the dais was remarkable in her lack of effort to disguise it. Jimmy looked tired and beaten and sad. I think a lot of Americans felt sorry for him because down deep they knew he had tried pretty hard to serve his country honorably.

Should Romney win, I will not have the same sympathy for 0bama.

What would really make it interesting would be riots in Sweden, Norway, France, Spain, and the UK. These countries have coddled so-called immigrants from the ME for years.

Our embassy in Berlin, (Berlin!!!), has been evacuated. Another anthrax type mail scare, but still…

Something else that Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama have in common:

Zbigniew Brzezinski

Zbigniew Brzezinski was Carter’s National Security officer and the man reponsible for accomplishing one of the Communist Goals of the early 1960′s (#44 Internationalize the Panama Canal), and he is one of Obama’s advisors.

What?

He’ll join Jessah Jacksum and Al Sharkton on the race-huckster circuit. He can make a couple million a year doing recitals.

I’d rather we all take up a lunch-money collection to buy him a nice island somewhere, cut off Internet service, install a permanent naval blockade and airdrop him supplies when he asks particularly nicely after Michelle’s brown thumb results in starvation.

The island of Elba may be available. The Italians need the money.

How far was Carter up in the polls at this point? Anyone know?

Obama’s up by around 4-5 points…

Grace_is_sufficient on September 13, 2012 at 12:34 PM

All we need now is to have his uncle start selling “Onyango Beer” and we’ll be at full Carter 2.0

It’s Funny…

When Carter was President – I was afraid FOR my country.

With Obama as President – I’m afraid OF my country.

OK…..it’s not so funny.
