Diplomatic sources: State Department had credible intel 48 hours before attacks that U.S. embassies might be targeted; Update: White House denies

posted at 9:03 pm on September 13, 2012 by Allahpundit

I’m looking forward to having it explained to me on the news tomorrow why this is all a misunderstanding and not a very big deal at all.

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and “lockdown”, under which movement is severely restricted

According to security sources the consulate had been given a “health check” in preparation for any violence connected to the 9/11 anniversary. In the event, the perimeter was breached within 15 minutes of an angry crowd starting to attack it at around 10pm on Tuesday night. There was, according to witnesses, little defence put up by the 30 or more local guards meant to protect the staff. Ali Fetori, a 59-year-old accountant who lives near by, said: “The security people just all ran away and the people in charge were the young men with guns and bombs.”

I’m awfully curious to hear how thorough that “health check” was given how quickly consulate security crumbled. Two thoughts here. One: While the bit about credible information is new and important, you don’t need that detail to know that Obama and his team dropped the ball on protecting the consulate. We already know there were no Marines stationed there; even the locals couldn’t believe how lightly guarded the building was. There’s no earthly reason for security to be that thin on 9/11, especially when jihadis had targeted the consulate and other western diplomats in Benghazi before. Two: I wonder if the “credible information” described in the piece has something to do with the Zawahiri video eulogizing Abu Yahya al-Libi, a top AQ chieftain from Libya. The video appeared on jihadi websites on Tuesday to coincide with 9/11, but intel experts who watch those sites sometimes see new material show up on their servers in advance. If they knew that a new Zawahiri video was coming on 9/11, that alone might have been reason to think Al Qaeda was out for revenge and eager to make a splash against U.S. interests somewhere on the anniversary. Is that the sort of intel we’re dealing with here or do they mean something more concrete and specific about a planned attack?

While we’re on the subject of Obama’s foreign-policy failures, here’s a blast from the past for longtime HA readers:

An Iraqi militia that carried out some of the most prominent attacks on foreigners during the Iraq war on Thursday threatened U.S. interests in the country over a film that has triggered protests in Libya, Egypt and Yemen.

“The offence caused to the messenger (Prophet Mohammad) will put all American interests in danger and we will not forgive them for that,” said Qais al-Khazali, leader of the Asaib al-Haq militia.

That’s the same Qais Khazali who led Iran’s “Special Groups” in Iraq, and who allegedly masterminded the famous 2007 operation in Karbala in which five U.S. servicemen were captured and executed. He was captured by American troops two months later. So why’s he back on the streets now and threatening to kill people over the Mohammed movie, you ask? Because, silly: We let him go as part of a prisoner exchange in 2009, over the strenuous objections of some military officers. Remember that, because Khazali’s expertly trained and sufficiently ruthless that he’s capable of following through on his threats in spectacular fashion. You might be seeing his name in the news again soon.

Exit question: Any word from the White House on whether Obama regrets not attending a daily intel briefing since September 5? I know he supposedly reads his briefing instead, but he’s been super busy lately doing interviews with morning-show DJs and scheduling appearances on Letterman, so maybe he hasn’t had time.

Update: It’s a big ol’ lie, says the White House.

The Obama administration is flatly denying a blaring British newspaper report that the U.S. diplomats in Libya were killed as a result of a “continuing security breach,” and that “credible information” about possible attacks had been ignored.

A U.S. official told POLITICO: “There’s no intelligence indicating that the attack in Benghazi was premeditated.”…

Shawn Turner, spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, emailed: “This is absolutely wrong. We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent.”

The Independent didn’t claim that the intelligence said there’d be an attack on the Benghazi consulate specifically. It claimed that American missions generally, including the one in Benghazi, could be targeted. The point is, security should have been ramped up at U.S. missions worldwide. Why didn’t that happen in Benghazi?

Apparently, they are not.
If it is true that Marines in Cairo were not allowed to have ammo for weapons, that would automatically put them at something less than high alert at any time.

He did no such thing. He invaded Grenada, he bombed Libya, he wrongly sent troops to Lebanon, and he built up the military in a confrontation with the Soviet Union. He also sent Pershing and Cruise Missiles to Europe.
So tell me about the war that followed the Beruit bombings and the new super base that replaced it

Yes indeed. A pretty dumb thing to say.
But remember who is saying it.

I do not care much for ther “intelligence” on this, but it was there. More interested in the EVIDENCE. That points to a premeditated act. In fact, any evidence would do so.

The thing about this, your average guy on the street would know to beef up security at embassies during a 9/11 anniversary. It’s not like this was an embassy in Sweden on a random Sunday in the middle of April.
Two explanations. And there are only 2. Either Obama is a complete incompetent delusional fool or he’s doing this on purpose. Either he’s a fool or he’s a traitor working with our enemies. The Muslim Brotherhood now has papers that will identify our friends working for us in Egypt and God knows where else.

Obama actions continue to send the message… do not help America in any way shape or fashion or America will kill you.

“Advisers to Mitt Romney on Thursday defended his sharp criticism of President Obama and said that the deadly protests sweeping the Middle East would not have happened if the Republican nominee were president.
“There’s a pretty compelling story that if you had a President Romney, you’d be in a different situation,” Richard Williamson, a top Romney foreign policy adviser, said in an interview. “For the first time since Jimmy Carter, we’ve had an American ambassador assassinated.””

Grenada was liberated.. not invaded. Two different words with two different meanings. Just as a woman who kills her rapist during the act of rape isn’t accused of murder! Grenada was being taken over by communist thugs! What about their actions?! I remember the history as it unfolded. I didn’t learn about it from some socialist professor in college course or read about it on some blog. I remember it as it was happening!

You want to use the word “invade” to discredit and equate our actions with those of aggressors! I am so sick of this crap! It is dog crap! You love some of these freaking communist countries… go live in them!

You might as well just say we invaded Europe after the Nazi’s too kit over. We didn’t We liberated Europe! The same freaking thing we did in Grenada! But even if we had invaded Grenada.. which we didn’t… it would still be a heck of a lot better off then it would have been had we allowed the communists.. the ones who were invading… to keep it!

Heck… if only America did go around an invade countries like it is accused of… if only we did.. the world would be a whole heck better off today for it! God… I wished we had been taking over countries around the world! The Middle East, China and Russia would be free and the freaking world would be a heck of a lot better off today!

Egypt intelligence warns of attacks on Israel, US embassies By JPOST.COM STAFF 09/11/2012 16:58

Egypt’s General Intelligence Service warned that a jihadi group is planning to launch terrorist attacks against the US and Israeli embassies in Cairo, according to a report Tuesday by Egypt Independent, citing a secret letter obtained by Al-Masry Al-Youm.

According to the report, the attack is being planned by Global Jihad, the group suspected of killing 16 Egyptian border guards in Sinai on August 5.

Al-Masry Al-Youm reportedly obtained a copy of the September 4 letter, sent to all Egyptian security sectors, warning that Sinai- and Gaza-based Global Jihad cells were planning attacks on the two embassies.

Egypt’s military is engaged in an ongoing campaign to root out Sinai-based terrorists.

Kennedy cut a deal not to support the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba and the Soviets backed off on putting missiles in Havana. He left Cuba to Castro thinking the people would mount a popular uprising, free themselves and create a democracy. Sound familiar? Yeah, and Kennedy assisted with the Bay of Pigs thing and then left those freedom fighters there to die with no air support. Something he had promised.

I read Barry Goldwater’s book. The one he wrote either just before or after his retirement. He said he was good friends with Kennedy even though he was running against him as President. He said he and Kennedy had even planned to go around the nation together on the same plane to do debates. They both had talks about keeping it friendly during their campaigns. He was confident he would beat Kennedy and though Kennedy was making bad decisions, never thought he was dishonest or mean. Barry said in his book he did not hold the same opinion of Johnson.

So,
First we Americans must accept we have a problem and more important “Its our fault.”.

So how to solve the problem?
So how is our fault?

10 or 12 steps.

1. Treat our dogs like crap, beat them under feed them, ban PETA from America. Kill all the pigs and hogs to include all the wild ones.

2. Require that no girls be allowed any education.

3. Beat our wifes and flaunt it to the world.

4. Make our womenn wear ugly black sacks and hide their faces.

5. Women not allowed to drive a car.

6. Women required to have a close family member with them at all times outside the home.

7. The will be only one God, our God.

8. Cut off hands and feet of those we find guilty of theft of say a snicker bar.

9. If any one leave our God, that one must be killed.

10. Attack Canada and Mexico for not obeying our God and our Gods laws. (aka American Shereara)

11.

12.

Pick the worst ideas around.

That it, just accept that or.

Fight.

They stopped giving him briefings on the economy a long time ago. The reason given at the time was they were a waste of time since he did not understand them.

He is not very interested in what the military is doing aside from those things that reduce the cost of having it around. Less money spent on military means more money for democrat spending and entitlements has long stood in the light of democrat reasoning. He may have attended a meeting on 9/5, but how many has he missed before that? Just a point, remember the famous picture of him sitting in the situation room, in his golfing clothes under his sports jacket. They had to go get him off the golf course so he could be there. The obvious conclusion is that he was totally unaware that the event was going to happen. If he had been attending intelligent briefings that would not have been possible. That a general stood ready to take the fall if things went wrong indicates that they understood he was not going to make any decision that had political consequences to HIMSELF.

Perhaps it is already a forgone conclusion that intelligent reports, briefings or meetings with him are a waste of time and effort if he does not understand them, is not interested in understanding them, and will not make a decision on anything. From the administration of lies, does anyone really believe he reads those briefings. He had aids and czars to do that for him.

Can you imagine what his answer would be if he were told nuclear missiles were in the air heading towards us? Launch ours in defense, or wait and apologize afterwards for offending those who attacked us. He clearly would chose the latter.

APACHEWHOKNOWS on September 14, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Oops, it looks like the Obama administration is starting to slowly acknowledge that they should have done more to secure the embassies, and the mainstream media is starting to pick up on the story:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. officials say they believe an Arabic talk show last Saturday showing parts of an anti-Muslim video made in the United States was the spark that set off violent attacks on U.S. missions in Libya and Egypt, but acknowledge the broadcast did not prompt a major upgrade in security precautions.

On Tuesday, four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed in an attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that U.S. officials said may have been planned by one or more militant factions. On the same day, protesters in Cairo breached the U.S. Embassy’s walls, and the protests have since spread to other countries, including Yemen, Bangladesh and Kuwait.

An Egyptian TV network, al-Nas, broadcast last Saturday what its presenters described as extracts from an English-language film denigrating the Prophet Mohammad, which it said had been uploaded on the YouTube website by “migrant Coptics,” a reference to exiled members of a Christian sect with a large minority presence among Egypt’s Muslim majority.

The clips broadcast on al-Nas were taken from a short film available on the Internet. It is called “Innocence of Muslims,” and portrays the Prophet – played by what appears to be a young American actor – as a womanizer, thug and child molester.

Three U.S. officials said the broadcast did not prompt strong warnings from intelligence agencies or the State Department of possible threats to U.S. diplomatic missions in the Islamic world.

One official, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was at least one specific warning about possible unrest in the region that was circulated within the government, but was not so alarming as to lead to a major upgrade in security for a possible emergency.

The lack of a major upgrade in precautions may show how difficult it is for officials to assess threats that first emerge on social media. The threats can seemingly come out of nowhere and gather strength rapidly.

The events also underline the role of the Middle East’s more freewheeling media, loosened from state restrictions after the fall of longtime dictators.

For many Muslims, any depiction of the Prophet is blasphemous, and caricatures or other characterizations have in the past provoked violent protests across the Muslim world.

“The number of potentially inflammatory things that are said or broadcast every week (is so large) … that warning about all of them would be useless,” said Paul Pillar, former top U.S. intelligence analyst for the Middle East and South Asia. It was “impossible to predict” the kind of violent reaction that occurred in Libya, Egypt and elsewhere.

One U.S. official said, “You can’t freak out on everything that’s broadcast.”

That official and others said the airwaves and Internet were filled with hateful material and U.S. authorities could be “crying wolf” if they issued a warning every time an anti-Islamic broadside was aired or posted online.

A senior congressional official said the question of what the United States knew about pre-September 11, 2012, threats and what it did about them would likely be examined in legislative inquiries into the Libyan and Egyptian violence.

Another aide indicated it would be difficult to fault U.S. agencies on the issue.

ATTORNEY GENERAL TO MANAGE PROBE

U.S. facilities in the Middle East were already on heightened alert earlier this week due to the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington.

The FBI has opened an investigation into the killings in Benghazi. U.S. officials said Attorney General Eric Holder was cutting short a foreign trip and would return to Washington on Friday to manage the Libya investigation.

Al-Nas is an Egyptian Islamic satellite channel whose programming ranges from Islamic scholars delivering religious edicts to shows about cooking and medicine.

Before Egypt’s 2011 revolution, authorities periodically suspended privately owned religious satellite channels such as al-Nas, many of which follow conservative Salafi Islam, for allegedly violating broadcasting licenses by promoting religious or sectarian hatred and providing dubious medical advice.

U.S. officials believe that al-Nas’ Saturday broadcast of a talk show hosted by Sheikh Khalid Abdallah was the flashpoint for the unrest.

Egyptian political scientist Omar Ashour said Abdallah was a controversial Islamist host of a TV show that specialized in criticizing liberals, often inviting firebrand commentators to mock secular Egyptians. His show tends to be popular with Salafi Muslims, but not with followers of the more mainstream Muslim Brotherhood that dominates Egypt’s government.

A European security official said intelligence reporting indicated the inflammatory clips from the American film run on the talk show had been translated and dubbed into Arabic by Copts, possibly members of the sect living in the United States.

In their commentary on the film clips, the hosts of al-Nas’ program alleged the material had been uploaded by “migrant Coptics,” according to Flashpoint Global Partners, a firm that monitors militant websites for government and private clients.

According to Flashpoint’s translation, the al-Nas presenters at one point in their introduction to the anti-Mohammad film, specifically mentioned “radical pastor Terry Jones,” the Florida preacher who staged a number of anti-Islamic events over the past year. Jones has confirmed he was involved in promoting the film.

Holder is such a fine one to check this out.

Very possible one of his fast and furious .50 cal walked guns made its way to Lybia and it was used to kill the Navy Seals.

These ones in power now of the commie Democrat party will be judged soon.

Acts of evil notwithstanding they know not what they do.

Denies and Lies. Sounds about right! This is the MO of the BO administration!
We are in deep doo doo and if this administration is not thrown out of office we are in deep shit.
The protesters want the blind sheik delivered to them and I say give him to him. Send him to them dead and covered by pig skins!

What have we got to do with that two-bit short movie? Gee, have you asked the innocent neighbors of the Muslims that torched Coptic Christian churches whether the actions of their countrymen have been helpful to the inter-religious dialogue? Are you actually asking the above in all seriousness?

totherightofthem on September 14, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Nobody has seen this stupid video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has nothing to do with the embassy attacks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is cover for Hillary and Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How will they explain away this 9/10 post from Raymond Ibrahim at PJ Tatler who reported on threats to burn the Cairo Embassy to the ground? Lemme guess – that wasn’t “48 hours” of warning, it was less than 24?

And which one of these three is untrue?

The Presidential briefing for the last 24 hours was still sitting beside the crapper whan all of this broke out…….

American marines have no bullets in their guns! Yet I’m betting all the weapons used by the muslim terrorists came from Brother Barak Hussein Obama during his secret, undeclared, unauthorized, wars!! Inquiring minds want to know if Obama secretly supplied those arms to the terrorists a la Fast and Furious!!Congress needs to start hearings on what this fraud has been up to to cause a potential WWIII!!! Are we being attacked by our own weapons? Saw a report the other day that the Fraud was planning to give Egypt a submarine!!

According to the Jerusalem Post, Egyptian intelligence warned us on September 4th. Anyway, there’s no question anymore that the Obama administration was warned prior to the attack and did not take the warning seriously.

eyedoc on September 14, 2012 at 1:38 PM

They’ve had ELEVEN YEARS of warning! It was 9/11 for goodness sake. Gee, after eleven years you’d think we’d ALWAYS beef up security in September.

Whether the WH denies knowing about this specific attack or not, THEY KNEW WHAT THE FRICKIN’ DATE IS!

It’s like not being ready in the US on April 20th.

They are just inept.

How come we never heard of this video since it supposedly came out 6 months ago? If the pastor in Gainesville put it out, I’m sure he would have been all over the news talking about it. How long has it been on You Tube? If our empty chair and the shrill one are going to use it as an excuse for the terrorists, then maybe we should get some details on just how bad this flick is.

Kissmygrits on September 14, 2012 at 10:24 AM

Before 9/11, that youtube clip had gotten 55,000 views. Since 9/11, that has gone up to over 1.25million.
Virtually no one had heard of that movie before the attacks on our embassies.

Interestingly, our DoJ – who can’t seem to find out who’s responsible in their own organization for Fast & Furious – has managed to ferret out the name and address of the producer of that movie — and publicize them – in just a day or so.

Solaratov on September 14, 2012 at 2:34 PM

And have readers here acted on that ‘bloodlust’ as you refer to it, Dante? You are truly despicable.

zoyclem on September 14, 2012 at 7:34 AM

I’m sure he equates the Battle at Lepanto as Christian bloodlust. Yeah, nevermind that Europe was saved from the muslims and 13-15,000 Christian slaves were liberated.

Kyle_Reese on September 14, 2012 at 2:51 PM

The inbred psychotics at the core of the islamist jihadist movement are fixated on numbers, numerology, anniversary dates. How could anyone NOT expect some sort of islamist violence on that date at US facilities in any of the collapsing muslim nations where this ‘arab spring’ jihad is taking place??

rayra on September 14, 2012 at 2:20 AM

Exactly so. And, from what I’ve read, the number 11 is highly significant to the, so that the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attack would be just the time to engage is a little light terroristic mayhem. The number 11 represents the visual of the name of Allah, whose name (based upon yahweh, IIRC) is made up of the 5th and 6ht letter of the Arabic alphabet. As they say, do the math. . ..

Um, highly significant to them.

Right. Because we have almost 250 years of “muslim attacks” on our soil. Oh, wait….we don’t. Strange that all of this really came about since the ’50s … couldn’t possibly have anything to do with our not minding our own business.

Dante on September 14, 2012 at 3:34 PM

“This is absolutely wrong. We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent.”

Right. If you skip the Intel Briefing because you’re just so much smarter than everybody else, then you don’t hear it when they warn of a possible/probable attack on our embassies.
That sounds pretty unaware. Carry on.
