Romney adviser on whether Egypt statement “could wait”: “That’s a silly question”

posted at 7:16 pm on September 12, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

While the Middle East erupted in protests akin to yesterday’s riots, presenting an opportunity to discuss our presidential candidates’ foreign-policy approaches to the so-called Arab Spring, the mainstream media continued to demonstrate an almost amazingly single-minded focus on the exaggerated faux-shortcomings of Mitt Romney’s communications team. The mind reels (full transcript here — it’s good):

Romney campaign senior foreign policy adviser Richard Williamson: “That’s a silly question, almost anything might wait… I came here to talk about the failed policies in the Middle East, which is what the American people are interested [in]. The failed policies of leading from behind. What you want to do is play a process ‘getcha’ question. I don’t want to play your game… Governor Romney’s statement was fine, it was acceptable, it was right. …We look forward to talking about this substance when you’re available.”

Before this segment of the interview, the CNN anchor went on and on and on about whether the timing of Romney’s statement was inappropriate. No. A thousand times, no. My Townhall buddy Guy Benson already said it perfectly:

Mitt Romney filled the void on behalf of the First Amendment, refused to shy away from American first principles, and excoriated the embassy’s posture (the White House eventually did the same). … Nevertheless, the insta-narrative is that Romney “jumped the gun” by “politicizing” the tragedy in Libya.  He did nothing of the sort. … The media is blaming Romney for capitalizing politically on deaths that he *did not know about* when he released a (generally strong) repudiation of our Cairo embassy’s reactions to a *different event.*  They’d criticize him for any action he took here, unless it involved essentially applauding and agreeing with everything the Obama administration has done, then sitting quietly in a corner.

The Obama administration has been sitting quietly in a corner. That’s the problem. The Obama administrations dallying and dithering and deferrals have given the world the impression that this nation is weak and that our first principles can be arbitrated by angry mobs committing acts of war against this nation and murdering our citizens in order to silence anyone with whom the disagree.

It’s not only a silly question, it’s damned insulting. The Romney people need to use those brass knuckles they spoke about. Things are getting hot in the middle east and now is no time for Obama and company to be apologizing.

My only criticism with Team Mitt is the timing of that statement/ press attempt at painting him into a corner.

He ended up giving it between the pig-in-a-pantsuit and the rat-eared bastard. He should have gone last and used some of the lackluster comments and lack of taking questions to really nail Obama. But nothing Mitt said was wrong or what we shouldn’t be seeking in a President (compare to the bastard that launched a pre-emptive apology for Muslim sensitivities at the same time he’s told the Catholic church to go to hell if they refuse to provide birth control to 30-year-old sluts).

LouisianaLightning on September 12, 2012 at 7:38 PM

The MSM criticism of Romney is absolutely stunning. Had President Obama not had a leading (from behind) role in the “Arab Spring,” then the criticism might be a little more valid. These events, however, are the direct result of new policies implemented by the Obama administration. Thus Romney has every right, even a duty, to criticize the President’s policies and his reaction to the events in Cairo and Benghazi. It’s time for the adults to take back the helm and steer our sinking ship of state back to port.

taxidrvrfor4 on September 12, 2012 at 7:38 PM

The media is pulling out all stops to protect their “boy.” It’s going to get a lot worse before elections. They do not care if they are exposed for dishonesty anymore. Only the end result matters.

I wish the Romney/Ryan campaign were more diligent in holding journalists accountable. Their site needs a “wall of shame” for reporters, so the American public can see how bad it is.

The left cracks me up. They act as though, simply because the GOP has made an effort to keep the presidential campaign focused on Obama’s record and the economy and jobs, that we haven’t had our eye on foreign policy the entire time.

I wonder why they thought JOHN BOLTON had been brought on board to advise ROMNEY during the beginning of the primary season?

I guess that, because the Democrats haven’t been able to pass a budget in 3 1/2 years, unemployment has been over 8% for over 43 consecutive months, workforce participation is at 63.6%, 1 in 7 Americans are on food stamps, 1 in 6 Americans are at or below the poverty level, 100 million Americans are on welfare, 43% of all immigrants, legal or illegal, who’ve been in this nation 20 years or more, are on welfare, we’re still accepting over 1 million people per year into the nation, mostly uneducated or low skilled from third world countries in accordance with an outdated quota system developed in 1965, and we’ve got 11-20 million illegal aliens at large in the nation on whom we are obliged to spend over $113 Billion on social service for every single year, and, according to the PEW CENTER estimate are that 7-8 million full time jobs are currently held by illegal aliens, we’ve only signed 3 trade agreements in the last 4 years, while China has signed 15 and is negotiating another 20, the Democrats have the impression that these are the only matters that are of import to the REST OF US.

Odd, when one considers that only a short four years ago, the GOP was tagged as the MILITARY PARTY, hawks one and all, who lived only for war and foreign policy…. at least according to the LEFT. My, how quickly they forget… or, at least, pretend to be suffering from sudden amnesia.

Here’s a great quote from the interview. I was watching it at the time and boy, the ambassador really nailed him!

“LEMON: I heard you. But that’s not what I asked you. But we’ll move on now. I want to read to you what some high-ranking people in your party are saying. Here’s what Peggy Noonan’s saying. A speech writer for Ronald Reagan said on Fox, “I don’t feel that Mr. Romney has been doing himself any favors in the past few hours,” she said. “Sometimes when really bad things happen, when hot things happen, cool words or no words is the way to go.” So Peggy Noonan says your guy didn’t do himself any favors for jumping out in front of this. What is your reaction?

WILLIAMSON: Well, as someone who served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Ronald Reagan in the White House and later as Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs in the White House, I think Ronald Reagan would have had no problem with Governor Romney speaking the truth and saying to the American people we shouldn’t apologize for our values and we should stand up for what we believe and that the American people deserve a substantive question and discussion about failed Middle East policies, the failed policies of leading from behind.”

NYconservative on September 12, 2012 at 7:49 PM

Barack Obama made his career and campaign between 2003 and the 2008 Presidential election about the Iraq war. Thats almost all he ever talked about. During the ENTIRE time American soldiers were in harms way. They were in peril and dying. I am quite confident, even though I don’t feel like doing the research, that Obama criticised the Bush administration SOON after certain attacks on Americans about those specific attacks.

The hypocrisy is laughable.

KMav on September 12, 2012 at 7:49 PM

What was Romney supposed to wait for anyway? How is his statement any less relevant? That the Ambassador died doesn’t make the criticism null and void. In fact, Romney needs to expand the statement to discuss Obama’s incompetence in foreign policy.

scgas on September 12, 2012 at 7:54 PM

What was Romney supposed to wait for anyway?

SAZMD on September 12, 2012 at 7:49 PM

He was suppose to wait until Obama got around to listening to his answering machine…
And then wait until Obama finished his round of Golf….
Then wait until the Teleprompter technicians had loaded the memory with BS…
Then wait until Obama finished his latte…
Then wait until Valerie Jarrett tells Obama that now is the time to go make a speech…

Give him credit. He wins elections. And so who we choose to combat him is… someone who won once by a fluke…

Flapjackmaka on September 12, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Why does that matter? The only contested election Obama has ever won was a fluke of epic proportions.

Count to 10 on September 12, 2012 at 7:55 PM

I bet obama would send those ships they used in the background at the dnc if he could.

newportmike on September 12, 2012 at 7:56 PM

Romney is doing the same thing he always does. Suck at campaigns. But he has already lost.

Anyone know what is happening in Montana there is rumbling that Tester might win. PPP even has a poll out with him ahead 2. Thats troubling

Flapjackmaka on September 12, 2012 at 7:33 PM

PPP? Really?

So, you say Romney has already lost…I guess that means I missed the voting and all and somehow slept through most of September and all of October…

Terrye on September 12, 2012 at 7:56 PM

I mentioned this on an earlier thread, but I want to mention it again: 9/11 is almost a holy day for the islamofacsists. They tend to attack American interests or plot to attack American interests on this date (they focus on our allies, too), and it’s been this way since a year after the first 9/11. I know we don’t do color alerts anymore, and that’s fine, they were confusing. But, knowing that the radical muzzies seem to have something up their sleeves every September, wouldn’t it make sense to amp up security at our embassies and other such targets on or around 9/11, just to be safe? The NY Times and its readers want the 9/11 remembrances to just go away, but the Islamists have shown they’re more than happy to NOT forget. There is simply no excuse for any of our foreign bureaus to have little or no security on or around 9/11. Over the years, they’ve been prime targets. The fact that this happened at all is inexcusable.

The answer to that question really depends on how much you think the government (or more accurately those currently in charge) have control over these things. It’s troubling for me to read that the local protection forces might have told the attackers where they might find the Ambassador. If that’s the case any sort of control is merely an illusion and we should cease any diplomatic relations immediately.

One thing I did notice..we got a lot of wishy washy crap from the Egyptian government, but the government in Libya {what government there is} has strongly condemned this in no uncertain terms and have said they will punish the people responsible. I don’t have much faith in anything that comes out of the region, but it might well be that the people who did this were not part of that government. They might have been AlQaida affiliated group who attacked this embassy because they knew it was virtually undefended.

Terrye on September 12, 2012 at 7:59 PM

I’m as pissed off at the media as anyone today, but at some point we have to realize there is nothing that we can do to change them. We aren’t going to win an election by griping about the media, no matter how legit the gripes are. The people in Boston are going to have to get off their asses and find a way to get around the media. I still can’t believe they ever thought they could ride this out and a bad economy would automatically bring voters to the guy who wasn’t Obama. Were they really naive enough to think the media would allow that to happen?

Mark1971 on September 12, 2012 at 7:49 PM

And what exactly that way around the media would be, care to enlighten us….

jimver on September 12, 2012 at 8:01 PM

joejm65 on September 12, 2012 at 7:56 PM

You’re exactly right.

Deadly embassy attacks were days in the making

The protest was planned by Salafists well before news circulated of an objectionable video ridiculing Islam’s prophet, Mohammed, said Eric Trager, an expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was announced Aug. 30 by Jamaa Islamiya, a State Department-designated terrorist group, to protest the ongoing imprisonment of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar abdel Rahman. He is serving a life sentence in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

[snip]

A U.S. official, speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the situation publicly, said the Obama administration is investigating whether the assault on the U.S. consulate in Libya was planned to mark the anniversary of 9/11.

Happy Nomad on September 12, 2012 at 7:59 PM

That is the thing..I heard that someone in the security forces might have said something to the bad guys..but I also heard that other security force people were fighting and getting shot at too. So,I think there is a chance that the government over there was not directly involved..but they obviously do not have control of the security. We should have had our own people securing this facility. I did hear the government condemned the action in no uncertain terms, without any equivocation.

Who knows?Not me.

But I am not sorry Gaddafi is gone. I am 60 years old and I can remember very well when that plane down over Scotland.Too bad Reagan did not get Gaddafi when the US bombed Tripoli.

Count to 10 on September 12, 2012 at 7:59 PM

I disagree that it is a cheap shot. McCain has had a very naive attitude when it comes to these “revolutions.” The problem in every case is that those we would put in power do not have the institutional legitimacy, organizational ability, or moral authority to get the job done. It is an echo of the bad foreign policy in South America that the US pursued for decades.

Happy Nomad on September 12, 2012 at 8:06 PM
