Report: U.S. consulate in Benghazi had no Marine protection

posted at 7:56 pm on September 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

But what about Romney’s gaffes?

The consulate where the American ambassador to Libya was killed on Tuesday is an “interim facility” not protected by the contingent of Marines that safeguards embassies, POLITICO has learned…

A senior administration official Wednesday called the Benghazi consulate “an interim facility,” which the State Department began using “before the fall of Qadhafi.” It was staffed Tuesday by Libyan and State Department security officers. The consulate came under fire from heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. By the time the attack ended several hours later, four Americans were dead and three others had been injured.

The Benghazi consulate had “lock-and-key” security, not the same level of defenses as a formal embassy, an intelligence source told POLITICO. That means it had no bulletproof glass, reinforced doors or other features common to embassies. The intelligence source contrasted it with the American embassy in Cairo, Egypt – “a permanent facility, which is a lot easier to defend.” The Cairo embassy also was attacked Tuesday.

There’s not even a pretense of an excuse made there. Whether it’s S.O.P. to deploy Marines to “interim facilities” or not, this was no ordinary facility. It’s an unfortified building in a volatile Muslim city that’s been targeted by jihadis beforeand it’s 9/11. Obama had no qualms about sending Marines to Benghazi today to reinforce the building; there’s no reason to think he couldn’t have sent them sooner. So what’s the excuse? Or is he simply counting on the media not to ask him this question? Because if so, I’ve got to tell you — that seems like a smart bet at this point.

Speaking of our concern-troll press corps, here’s Chris Matthews summing up the narrative du jour by insisting that “The tragedy in Benghazi that cost Ambassador Stevens his life unfortunately has been overshadowed by the desperate reach by Mitt Romney to secure political advantage.” Top American diplomat killed by jihadis on September 11th at a consulate with no Marine protection = page two. Romney hitting Bambi hard on it = page one. I’ll leave you with two thoughts. One: Matthews can play dumb all he wants but Romney’s statement about the administration sympathizing with the attackers in Egypt was a perfectly apt way of describing that filthy press release from the Cairo embassy yesterday afternoon. And no, it’s no excuse that the embassy released that statement before protesters stormed the compound later in the day; they emphatically stood by their statement later in the afternoon. Unless Matthews is suggesting that the president can’t be held responsible for official U.S. embassy declarations (special rules for The One, as usual), I don’t know what his objection is.

Two: Since we’re floating in a sea of pious leftist bilge today about politicizing attacks on the U.S., read this Washington Free Beacon report on candidate Obama referring to a specific attack on U.S. troops in July 2008 to criticize Bush on the war. That pattern doesn’t start with The One, either: Philip Klein pointed earlier on Twitter to this 2004 report noting that “On a day when seven U.S. servicemen were killed in a suicide bombing attack in Iraq, [John] Kerry termed the war in Iraq ‘catastrophic.’” Good, hard campaigning on a seminal foreign-policy issue, or disgraceful politicization of American grief? If you’re a concern-troll journalist, the candidate’s party affiliation will get you 95 percent of the way to an answer.

Someone mentioned to me that it was standard procedure to have the host country provide exterior protection while it was the responsibility of the consulate to have it’s own inside security. What do they do in cases of travel? The ambassador was traveling that day, if I understand correctly. Libya is in a state of quasi-anarchy with a weak government. We should have been providing the consulate with our own security, in my opinion. Why would we have our ambassador in an islamist hotbed without adequate protection?

Those people were safe in the protective hands of President Obama. As they slept, little unicorns danced around outside of their consulate. Happy islamists, proud of the work their savior Obama has done on their behalf, would never harm their persons.

Obama was so certain of these facts that he didn’t even put guards outside, bars on the windows or cameras and sensors around the property. There were some locks, sure, but even those were totally superfluous.

It was Mitt Romney who disturbed this safety. The evil Romney did it all.

sentinelrules on September 12, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Romney should stay on the attack here. Ignore the carping from the press. What matters here is that POTUS left American diplomatic personnel and facilities — in a hot zone — unguarded. That’s a legit scandal under any circumstances, regardless of party. Congressional hearings – at a minimum – are clearly warranted.

Obama can’t both run as the Osama-slayer and avoid his impotence in protecting overseas US assets.

And just how, pray tell, did intelligence miss this?

Deadly embassy attacks were days in the making

The protest was planned by Salafists well before news circulated of an objectionable video ridiculing Islam’s prophet, Mohammed, said Eric Trager, an expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was announced Aug. 30 by Jamaa Islamiya, a State Department-designated terrorist group, to protest the ongoing imprisonment of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar abdel Rahman. He is serving a life sentence in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

[snip]

A U.S. official, speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the situation publicly, said the Obama administration is investigating whether the assault on the U.S. consulate in Libya was planned to mark the anniversary of 9/11.

Just wondering….how did the jihadi’s know that the Ambassador was at an unprotected consulate?

The embassy is in Tripoli; was it serendipity that the jihadi’s attacked a building where the US Ambassador just happened to be hanging out?

Add it up…reports of the attack being coordinated, Stevens in an unprotected facility, his body was missing for some hours…

I’d say this was a planned attack to take the Ambassador hostage, but he died in the process.

Now watch me hit this drive.

The death and injury to our citizens in Benghazi is a tragedy, the act of attacking the embassy facility itself is an act of war.

Its and important distinction.

Rather than severing all relations with Libya and Egypt,

rather than withdraw ALL of our personnel from those nations and close all embassies,

rather than expel every single diplomat from their nations who are on our soil,

rather than end all foreign aid immediately,

rather than implement severe sanctions and suspend all trade with these nations,

Obama has promised to “track down the perpetrators”. As if they simply committed a crime, albeit murder and mayhem.

He has sent in the Marines to secure the area, a day late and four lives and three casualties short. He has said that he ‘condemns the violence’.

Libya has apologized. For whatever that is worth.

Egypt has not only not apologized, they’ve actually instructed their ambassadors to pursue charges against the movie producers of that tired, ridiculous little internet ‘trailor’ of a movie that will never be made.

Our Joint Chiefs called a pastor in the middle of Florida to ask him not to run that internet clip that everyone has already seen and to promise not to run the film, that will likely never be made in any case, thus rewarding the perpetrators of this blatant, calculated, act of war.

The MSM has wet its pants over the idea that some Muslim, somewhere, may have been offended by someone half a world away exercising his freedom of speech and expression and even went so far as to suggest that the person who exercised his freedom of speech should be prosecuted… ostensibly, for offending someone in Benghazi who is a homicidal maniac and war monger.

A nation in turmoil, infiltrated by Al Qaeda, on the anniversary of the 911 attack.

Only a retard wouldn’t think taking extreme precautions wouldn’t be merited.

You need to apologize to retards everywhere.

This is what make me the most angry – they outsourced their security to a nation that can’t be trusted.

There are no words.

..Gigi, serious question: do you suppose that the revulsion over all of this mishandling will cause the good Americans to vote this buttwipe out? In other words, will we achieve the level of disgust that we felt back in 1979-80 when we threw Carter out?

Ari Fleischer just stated to Anderson Cooper that there were several tweets later reconfirming the stupid statement. He also said that the Administration criticized the same statement and disavowed it. Why should one side be able to criticize and not the other?

Fox reported that someone in the security force actually directed the murderers to where he was……probs the same “security guy” taking pictures as noted in another article.

avagreen on September 12, 2012 at 8:31 PM

I had heard that the ambassador was transferred to a location by the security hired in Libya and those security allowed the death of the ambassador.
