Joint Chiefs chair’s newest duty: Phoning Terry Jones and begging him not to antagonize Muslims

posted at 6:37 pm on September 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

It’s not clear what role Jones had, if any, in producing the Mohammed film that’s got Islamists in a lather but he’s been promoting it, so it’s time for the U.S. government to spring into action. Do note, this isn’t the first time he’s received a call from a top defense official. Bob Gates picked up the phone too and beseeched him not to burn the Koran two years ago when the last “Islam insulted” insanity was raging. Think about that. Think about how many civilians, in a country of 300 million people, have ever received a personal call from the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff asking them not to do something. Dempsey, in particular, likely spends most of his time these days gaming out an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities; he took precious time from doing that to phone some guy in Florida who’s somehow made it on the international media’s radar for his willingness to provoke. That’s how much of a geopolitical threat it’s become to the United States for even the most random Americans to affront Islamic sensibilities.

This madness must stop. Mario Loyola:

Nobody in the U.S. government, least of all the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff acting in his official capacity, should be calling Terry Jones or any other American citizen about the Mohammed spoof. Not only does that elevate Jones to some sort of semi-official status, but spoofs of deities are entirely within our rights and absolutely no business of the government’s. The U.S. government should not be taking an official position on the Mohammed spoof. It is entirely outside the official competence of United States military to be calling private citizens asking them be quiet, especially when they are exercising a constitutional right. Offending people is not an incitement to violence. Otherwise I could get everyone who wears a Che Guevara t-shirt brought up on charges of incitement…

Meanwhile, members of Congress should formally protest General Dempsey’s phone call to Terry Jones. I know Petraeus did it when Terry Jones was going to burn some Korans, but he was wrong then and General Dempsey is wrong now. In their private capacity they can make whatever phone calls they want. In their official capacity they have no business making phone calls like this.

Why anyone in the government would want to raise Jones’s profile this way is inexplicable. They’re creating a perverse incentive for copycat attention-seekers and provocateurs to follow his lead; we’ll get more Koran-burnings from indulging him, not less. And Loyola’s right that military leaders phoning citizens to ask them to pipe down for the sake of the troops sets a bad precedent. If more copycats do emerge, will Dempsey phone all of them? Will the Pentagon set up a special phone bank for officers to phone critics of Islam and let them know that they’re hurting national security by giving fundie nuts a pretext to make trouble? If we’re going down this road, let’s just establish a PR bureau inside the Defense Department to issue official statements of patriotic disapproval anytime a U.S. citizen says something that’s unhelpful to the wider strategy in the Middle East

The punchline here, by the way, is that the movie that’s got everyone all worked up appears to be a scam of some sort. Read BuzzFeed’s post on how some of the dialogue, including mentions of “Mohammed,” was overdubbed. No one seems to be able to find the filmmaker, “Sam Bacile,” either; he claims to be an Israeli Jew but, according to an associate who spoke to Jeffrey Goldberg, that’s not true. The cast and crew issued a statement today insisting that they were “grossly misled” about the film’s purpose, which jibes with the idea of the dialogue having possibly been overdubbed by “Bacile” in post-production. (Or maybe the case is just disowning the film because they’re now in fear for their lives.) “Bacile” has given a few phone interviews already and been sharply critical of Islam so I don’t think this is a case of jihadis overdubbing the dialogue themselves to create a false-flag pretext for international Outrageous Outrage, but we’ll see. Stay tuned.

We have COWARDS running our military these days.

riddick on September 12, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Not just the military. The State Department, Executive branch, educational system, media, and a large number of average citizens are also afraid and ashamed of their own country, culture and anything else they are conditioned to despise.

If I were Jones, I would call him and tell him to mind his own business.

He is not enlisted and has equal authority.

FDR certainly played along with Hitler when he sent a ship full of Jews back to gas chambers. Too bad so many of us Jews forget this piece of history, I had a supposedly conservative Jew tell me it was “Republicans” who did.

bluesdoc70 on September 12, 2012 at 9:49 PM

This is the problem that internet brings with it. Any idiot in America can now communicate with any idiot in the Middle East, effectively circumventing diplomats with their learned way to speak with governments.

There’s nothing that can be done, and these phone calls by Patreus and Dempsey are just out of desperation, because there’s no legal way to stop this Bacile character and Jones. 100 years ago if they burnt a Koran nobody outside Jones’ ‘hood would’ve known about it. But today everybody in the world will know about it right away, and every commentary center under the sun will also publish its 2 cents immediately, also for everyone in the world to see. Moreover, because of technology, the demonstrations in response to the provocation from across the sea can also be instantly organised.

Internet does not bring freedom, it brings destabilisation which in the end may or may not bring freedom. It may also bring Muslim fanatical riots and Jihadi killings of Americans and others in the Middle East.

The so-called ‘provocation’ was an excuse for what they intended to do regardless of what excuse they found to justify it. There is no cause and effect involved here. If it wasn’t this film it would be a teddy bear’s name or a cartoon or whatever.

AP is spot on here, as is Loyola and the other critics of our out-of-control military leaders and the nitwit politicians (of course).

They’re creating a perverse incentive for copycat attention-seekers and provocateurs to follow his lead; we’ll get more Koran-burnings from indulging him, not less.

But here he seems to be leaning toward some obligatory attack on Terry Jones, or anyone who would thumb his nose at the IslamoNazis. And for this I have only one question: Quick, Allah–can you name five of the Americans who have burned Bibles over the centuries?

I suspect not, and I know that’s part of your main point but the attack on Jones seems to miss that point badly. These diseased vermin are a lesser form of life, and when the Pentagon treats them like poor precious children who need protection, they make a huge mistake. Arm yourselves and keep your distance…

Making Catholic churches pay for birth control is like making American Muslims pay for bacon at their ‘community centers’ – they don’t have to participate, but they cannot trample on others’ rights, now can they? It’s only fair…

This is the USA, not the Soviet Union!!! I hope people are beginning to see how far this country has strayed from it’s founding principles as laid out in our Constitution. This Administration seems to treat the Constitution with contempt, unfortunately, several that preceeded, have done the same thing!

tomshup on September 13, 2012 at 11:31 AM

It’s not so much cowards running the military (but there is an element of truth to that) its that they’ve never had a clue about how to run a good I/O (information operations) campaign over there to counter the Jihadi propaganda and sell our efforts. They’ve also been paralysed by Political Correctness (scrubbing out all instructional material on violent Islamic extremeism lately is just the latest blow). The Jihadis are kicking our a$$es over there in I/O – notice that there’s never been a shortage of terrorist scumbags willing to kill themselves to get to us.

I really get sick of the military training our soldiers to act like unworthy worms that have to grovel in the presense of Muslims. This whole handling the Koran with gloves was a bunch of garbage – my kafir self bought Korans in Saudi, Kuwait, Iraq, and Bahrain and nobody, no Muslim said boo or cared. The officers are getting piss poor advice (no doubt from the gamma males in State – who in turn are being advised by a Islamic Brotherhood 5th column rampant in our government now).

Bah. Just pull the guy out of there. We’re not trying to win, and we don’t know how to win.

Portia46 on September 13, 2012 at 1:31 PM

I don’t agree with any president giving anyone in our military such an order. But the only reason Dempsey is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is because he was the best butt kisser available of all the senior generals and admirals at the time of the appointment.

If Romney wins one of the first things he needs to do is demand the whole top two levels of generals and admirals in the Pentagon put in retirement orders effective immediately.
