Democrats honored veterans at convention with graphics of ships from … Russian Navy?

posted at 10:01 am on September 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Normally I’d headline this Hot Air-style as “too bad to check,” but as it turns out, I don’t need to check.  The American experts on this topic have already checked it out … the US Navy.  Writing in the Navy Times, Sam Fellman reports that the backdrop during the Democratic National Convention salute to veterans displayed Russian warships rather than American — and that the Navy can actually tell the difference:

On the last night of the Democratic National Convention, a retired Navy four-star took the stage to pay tribute to veterans. Behind him, on a giant screen, the image of four hulking warships reinforced his patriotic message.

But there was a big mistake in the stirring backdrop: those are Russian warships.

While retired Adm. John Nathman, a former commander of Fleet Forces Command, honored vets as America’s best, the ships from the Russian Federation Navy were arrayed like sentinels on the big screen above.

These were the very Soviet-era combatants that Nathman and Cold Warriors like him had once squared off against.

“The ships are definitely Russian,” said noted naval author Norman Polmar after reviewing hi-resolution photos from the event. “There’s no question of that in my mind.”

One might think that this takes quite a bit of technical expertise … and that’s true, to a point:

For example, the ship in the foreground, on the far right, has a square radar antenna at the top of its masthead. That is the MR-700 Podberezovik 3-D early warning radar, commonly identified as “Flat Screen” for its appearance, a three-dimensional early warning radar mounted on the Kerch, said Eric Wertheim, editor of “Combat Fleets of the World.”

Similarly, the third ship has a MR-310 “Head Net” air search radar, shaped like two off-set bananas, at its masthead and is mostly likely the guided missile destroyer Smetlivyy. The first two ships seem to be Krivak-class frigates, but it’s hard to discern from the silhouette, experts said.

But after that point, it becomes rather obvious, at least to everyone but the oblivious:

But the fact they are Russian ships is not in doubt. In addition to the ship’s radar arrays and hulls, which are dissimilar from U.S. warships, the photo features one more give-away: a large white flag with a blue ‘X’ at the ships’ sterns.

Polmar, who authored “The Naval Institute Guide to the Soviet Navy,” recognized the blue ‘X’-mark: “The X is the Cross of St. Andrew’s, which is a Russian Navy symbol,” Polmar said. (An anchored U.S. warship, by contrast, flies the American flag on its stern.)

How difficult is it to find pictures of ships from the US Navy?  The Navy has a Flickr account with thousands of pictures for anyone to use, including a set specific to its ships at sea.  For instance, here’s a terrific picture of the USS Abraham Lincoln with F/A-18 Hornets flying formation over it, and two Golden Falcon helicopters firing flares in its wake:

Not everyone knows ship silhouettes, but one might think that the DNC would at least recognize the lack of an American flag on a naval vessel — or at least know to go to official US military sites to get pictures of the US military.

You ask too much of the left.

Besides since the Soviets made bigger clunkier weapons systems, their ships tend to have a more menacing look than, well just about every other naval force in the world.

If you are looking for an appearance of power, an old belching Soviet ship fits the bill.

These people aren’t this stupid. No one at that that level and with that much interest in choreographing would make a mistake like this. Put simply, the DNC purposely chose Russian ships rather than American ships. The question is what was the message that they intended to send to those who they wanted to notice.

ted c on September 12, 2012 at 11:09 AM

Just another example of the carelessness and lack of attention to detail in this administration and party. I’m sure the people developing the graphics were just not that interested in the military, looked through some stock footage, found some boats, and then added a picture of some airplanes and called it good. They then looked at the next agenda item, “Oooh! Another abortion speech! Alright, let’s get into this one!”

BTW, apparently the aircraft formation is F-5 trainers. Not exactly state of the art or front-line fighters.

The photo Ed showed was much better. Would have been more cross service if they’d shown some F-35′s or F-22′s. But then, that would have required a level of knowledge they just don’t have.

glockomatic on September 12, 2012 at 11:11 AM

This shows a lack of respect – for the Admiral, for the Navy and for the job the person was hired to do.

A person who respects the military takes the time to make sure the details are right – all of them – because they matter to people who’ve made sacrifices for us. A person with self-respect takes the time to do his job right, but a person with an entitlement mentality does only what it takes to get by . . . slap any picture up there and call it a day. Such a shock that it would happen at the Democrat’s convention.

NavyMom on September 12, 2012 at 11:12 AM

This is just one more way that 2012 Democrats showed themselves. There were the omissions of God and Jerusalem as the capital of Israel from the platform. Here, a salute was effectively given to the Soviet Navy. The Democrats showed themselves to be God-hating, Israel-hating, American-hating traitors.

Its a damn good thing the liberal Democrats didn’t have the brains or perseverance to obtain photos of the Iranian navy, or they would have had them showing.

This in-your-face technique that the liberal Democrats use every day is getting old. They don’t give a flying crap what we think. They’re on their mission from Allah, and his cellmate in Hell, Karl Marx, to destroy the former US of A and they appear to be successful – just ask them.

davidk on September 12, 2012 at 11:27 AM

First, I really do think this is an example of “don’t attribute malice where mere stupidity is sufficient.” I doubt anyone purposely picked Soviet Black Sea ships for that backdrop. However, it is perfectly within the realm of other stupidity from the Obama administration/campaign and other Democrats, where they have just grabbed a nice-looking pic of something military and dropped it into their Potemkin patriotic shows.

Most likely, they subscribe to several clip-art/photo services and did a search for “navy ships” or some such. They found one they liked and downloaded it, then did their photoshops and created their graphics. They lack any understanding of military pride and are just too self-centered to understand why it might make a difference.

Second, there might very well be a semi-good reason they aren’t grabbing pics off the US Navy website. It would be politicization of the military. Our guys and gals aren’t allowed to wear their uniform with any identifiable markings in a political or commercial ad. And, using a government photo of a military ship in a blatantly political gathering would probably break the same rules.

Having said that, there are unofficial photos around that show US Navy ships, as well as the possibility of photoshopping out the ship numbers on those Navy photos. Heck, they could always get the Russians to sell them some pics of US Navy ships if they’re going to go back to the Cold War, anyway.

(And, I have to disagree with the Navy “expert” – those don’t appear to be F5s to me. They could be any of a handful of non-US jets, but if they were F5s, the fuselage would be a bit longer in relation to the wings, IMHO. I have hours in the trainer equivalent, and I work near a NASA flight facility.)
