CBS: Libyan security team fingered US ambassador to be killed; Update: Libyan president issues apology

posted at 9:21 am on September 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

In the confusion surrounding the murders of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya yesterday, the Libyan government — which exists due to the military intervention of the US and NATO — initially left the impression that loyalists to dead dictator Moammar Qaddafi conducted the assassinations.  CBS, however, now reports that the Libyan government has changed its tune.  Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and the other diplomatic personnel got moved to another building by Libyan security forces when the consulate was attacked, and then betrayed by them to the attackers:

Military officials told CBS News an anti-terrorism team of U.S. Marines was being deployed to Libya to help secure U.S. interests in the country following the attack. The State Department said, however, that no Americans were remaining at the facility in Benghazi. State officials would not confirm how many Americans were evacuated, or to where.

Wanis al-Sharef, a Libyan Interior Ministry official in Benghazi, said the four Americans were killed when the angry mob, which gathered to protest a U.S.-made film that ridicules Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, fired guns and burned down the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

He said Stevens, 52, and other officials were moved to a second building, deemed safer, after the initial wave of protests at the consulate. According to al-Sharef, members of the Libyan security team seem to have indicated to the protesters the building to which the American officials had been relocated, and that building then came under attack.

Stevens, 52, was the first U.S. ambassador to be killed in the line of duty since 1979.

The dispatch of more Marines to Libya comes a little late, writes Michael Patrick Leahy at Breitbart, who wonders why the US didn’t have more Marines stationed at this mission in the first place.  Or did they have any?

Security at the consulate was apparently provided by Libyan nationals hired by the United States. While security for American embassies is typically provided by our own Marines, the two Marines reported killed in yesterday’s attacks appear not to have been stationed at the embassy, but were sent there from another unknown location as the violence erupted. There is also no indication if these two Marines were the only American military personnel on site at the time of Ambassador Stevens’s death.

All reports indicate that the security forces at the consulate were overwhelmed by the size of the militant crowds and offered no resistance as they stormed the building, looted it, and killed the four Americans.

As the facts surrounding the destruction of the American consulate and death of Ambassador Stevens become known, investigators will focus on these question: Did the State Department provide adequate security for our embassy staff there? If not, why not?

And finally, the most important question of all: Where were the Marines?

We’d better get those answers quickly … perhaps as quickly as tomorrow.  The Muslim Brotherhood, which now controls Egypt, has called for a “peaceful protest” on Friday throughout all the country — and wants “all national forces” to participate in it:

Egypt’s powerful Muslim Brotherhood on Wednesday called for nationwide protests Friday after a film deemed offensive to Islam sparked a deadly attack in Libya and furious protests in Cairo.

The Brotherhood calls “for peaceful protests on Friday outside all the main mosques in all of Egypt’s provinces to denounce offenses to religion and to the Prophet,” the Muslim Brotherhood’s Secretary General Mahmud Hussein said in a statement.

He also urged all “national forces to join the protests.”

The Muslim Brotherhood, from which President Mohammed Morsi emerged, is the largest and most organized political force in the country.

We’d better figure out our security in Cairo ASAP, or get our people out of there. This is going downhill fast, and the weak-sauce responses from the Obama administration is very clearly not dissuading radicals from their purpose.

Update: Libya’s interim president, Mohammed el-Megarif, issued an explicit apology for the murders of Stevens and the three other Americans:

Mohammed el-Megarif described the attack as “cowardly” and offered his condolences on the death of Ambassador Chris Stevensand the three other Americans. Speaking to reporters, he vowed to bring the culprits to justice and maintain his country’s close relations with the United States. He said the three Americans were security guards. ….

“We extend our apology to America, the American people and the whole world,” el-Megarif said.

Contrast that with the silence coming from Egypt’s leadership after the attack on the US embassy.

Am I the only one who can’t get through to Gateway Pundit? There’s apparently a picture of the animals parading the body through the streets. Hillary said they were taking him to the hospital. That makes no sense. Where is the hospital in relation to the Embassy? No automobiles?

These attacks were acts of war. I lived through Jimmy Carter’s disaster in Iran—and we’re STILL dealing with the mess he created by pulling the rug out of under the Shah and extolling the virtues of Khomeini. I remember well the human rights activists in their masks and black checkered head gear and signs by the side of the 14th Street Bridge. So, Obama and Clinton have replaced the devils we knew with the animals.

Does anyone here remember than Obama put us into the war in Libya and the next day flew to Brazil to give them $2 billion to develop their off shore oil, just as he closed down ours.

He’s programmed for pleasant, high-minded platitudes, not telling it like it is. Let’s see where he places Muslim rage in his make-believe world. Will he call Islam the religion of peace? Will he say the Muslim call to prayer is one of the prettiest sounds on earth? Will he say all religions preach the common theme of universal brotherhood and love?

Astonishing, isn’t it?

All during the Bush administration, we heard how Bush was doing everything wrong and making the world more dangerous for Americans and if only we had some “smart” liberals in charge, things would be so very different.

All we had to do in 2008 was elect that brilliant, Citizen-of-the-World, raised in a Muslim country, Quran-loving Barry Hussein Obama (with his “near perfect” Arabic accent), and he’d right all the wrongs done by Bush’s “cowboy diplomacy,” and make the world love and respect us again.

Now here we are, after four years of Barry Hussein’s appease-and-apologize foreign policies, and guess what? The world doesn’t love us any better, they respect us far less than before, it’s more dangerous for Americans than ever, and yet miraculously, none of that is Barry Hussein’s fault.

It’s all still Bush’s fault . . . or Romney’s fault. But it is certainly not Barry’s fault.

I don’t see how Libyan security force involvement reduces the probability that Kaddafi loyalists (and their al-Qaeda allies) orchestrated these assassinations.

Recall the Kaddafi klan’s typical terror turnaround time is measured in months or years;

March ’86: US Gulf of Sidra
April ’86: Libya Berlin bombing + TWA840

April ’86: US El Dorado Canyon
Sept ’86: Libya PA73
Dec ’88: Libya PA103
Sept ’89: Libya UTA772

You will never get real freedom and recognition between black and white people in this country without destroying the country, without destroying the present political system, without destroying the present economic system, without rewriting the entire constitution. It will be a complete destruction of everything that America supposedly stands for.

Malcolm X

Only Malcolm X’s autobiography seemed to offer something different. His repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me. The blunt poetry of his words. His unadorned insistence on respect. He promised a new and uncompromising order, martial in its discipline.

Barack Hussein Obama

Watch this video to hear these quotes spoken by these two men.

Clearly, Obama has a unique respect and appreciation for Malcolm X.

And Malcolm X’s daughter has a unique respect and appreciation for Obama:

Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of Al Hajj Malik Shabazz, aka Malcolm X, says were her father alive today, he would “share everyone’s joy about the prospect of returning the United States to a position of credibility, respect and leadership.”

“Forty-four years after his martyrdom, he remains the most famous and recognized Muslim American, as well as a role model for men and women alike advocating for social justice,” she writes.

“Forty-four years ago, the idea of an African American as president of the most powerful nation on earth – let alone president with a name that is common among Muslims – wasn’t even imaginable. Yet in 2008, the people of the United States of America voted,” she said.

“I believe that President Obama and the citizens of the world will also come to understand that Islam is a religion of peace and unity, which in effect, are the same ideals for which my own father advocated,” she continues.

Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs expands on this in her post, where she quotes Chavis Muhammad, “As an African American Muslim, I can say my prayers were answered when Obama was elected”, and she also gets Robert Spencer’s response.

I’m sorry but I don’t buy that this was about some film. According to the Libyans they, and presumably us, knew there would be protests over the killing of Al Queada’s number tow guy by U.S. drones in Pakistan. I think the Obama admin is pushing the film aspect to CYA.

Deanna on September 12, 2012 at 10:36 AM

As we witness Islamic Imperialism around the world, and as the “57 States” of the Organization of the Islamic Conference plan to make Christians criminals under international law, remember that Obama promised he will “stand with [Arab and Pakistani Americans] should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

Actual quote from “The Audacity of Hope” [pg. 261]:

Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

That is highly “nuanced”, as Obama can claim that he was merely describing the needs of the Arab and Pakistani Americans with whom he met…but he doesn’t deny that he would indeed “stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction”.

This is what happens when you have “Islamic democracy”.

Let this be yet another lesson to those fools who are convinced that democracy is the cure for what troubles the Islamic world. It is not, because unlike in the Western world, Islam has not been separated from government in these “democracies” and worst yet Islam is a governmental system itself which will try to take the place over the second the democracy is established.

This is why I am against going into Syria to establish a democracy, why I was not, and still am not a fan, of democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it is a clear failure in Egypt and Libya. Unless you are willing to hobble the institutions of Islam, to destroy their political parties, and separate Islam from government in those societies you have no chance of short term success. Even long term success is not guaranteed as we have seen in Turkey.

You literally have to uproot their entire way of life for over a thousand years. You can’t just go in a replace the dictator (and his regime) with democracy and declare victory. You are going to have to lock up (or kill) almost everyone in Islamic religious establishment, force western cultural norms on the population at the end of gun and be willing to kill lots of people (and lose lots of American soldiers and money in the process) to establish anything like what we would call a democracy or modern civilization.

It just is not worth the time, lives, or money. The best you can do is do retribution operations on them every time they do something to us, and try to avoid contact with the Islamic world as much as possible, while spending some money and military assets on weakening them as much as possible around the edges and within.

SHOCKED… simply shocked that the ever so peaceful Islamic region would react violently on the anniversary date of 9-11!

Anyone with brain cells still firing would have been able to predict some sort of violent outburst from the Muslim community…. Sure you can blame it on a You-Tube mini doc most people would just ignore (and rightfully so), but we are at and have been at a world wide religious tipping point for at least a decade. Still wondering about who the people were that coordinated the 9-11 attack? We can’t really have a discussion about it without having to address the real problem and that is that the religion of peace… is not a religion of peace and it never has been. The only way of conducting peace with Islam is capitulation and acceptance of the faith through practicing the faith. The Qur’an and Sharia Law dictates full compliance or face punishment.

In poor taste again, our own media is blaming this extremism on the documentary and is not placing the blame on the monstrous violent sect that has enacted a multitude of hideous acts against innocent American or western citizens….. How about for once call it what it is….WRONG and unacceptable.

There will be more violence… President Barack Obama and his administration is once again caught with their pants down incompetent, ill prepared.

Pathetic response by the marxist. And he alluded to rejecting denegration of religious beliefs of others. Is there any doubt now whatsoever that his administration was being the press release yesterday.

bgibbs1000 on September 12, 2012 at 10:46 AM

This is so disgraceful, a total failure by this wimpy administration and its state department. Oblunder–asleep at the wheel again. No honest-to-God America-loving American President would have allowed things to get to this point. Too little, too late, Prezuhdunce Incompetent strikes again. This alone oughtta wake up a lot of people and should by itself get this lazy deadbeat coward thrown out of office. The safety of not only this country but of the world is at stake here. And what is that I read? He’s jetting off to Vegas today, for what, to beg for more cash and votes cuz that’s all it’s about for this selfish weasel jerk. Romney needs to keep the heat on.

Prezuhdunce Idiot just started his “statement” and I turned off my radio. He does not deserve to address this country nor does he deserve my attention as nothing he says holds any weight or seriousness. Get this absolute failure outta my sight!

stukinIL4now on September 12, 2012 at 10:46 AM

The picture in Drudge was not clear, but the ones in Gateway were. It appears Ambassador Stevens was still alive when he was captured and carried over the shoulder of the man. Stevens’ left arm was bend at the elbow and directed towards his face. He was tortured and murdered in close quarter. And then you have the picture of his body being dragged on the ground.

Doomberg on September 12, 2012 at 10:45 AM

That is (or might be) the SCANDAL.

jake-the-goose on September 12, 2012 at 10:46 AM

So far, Obama is pathetic. Will he take softball questions from his allies in the press?

birdwatcher on September 12, 2012 at 10:47 AM

Plus, Muslim Brotherhood calls for all “national forces” in Egypt to protest on Friday.

Back in the day, we used to call this a ‘target-rich environment’…

affenhauer on September 12, 2012 at 10:41 AM

No Shiite. Time to send a friggin cloud of predators over Egypt.

HotAirian on September 12, 2012 at 10:47 AM

O’Blabla……. more garbage…. just filibustering…. no meat…. nothing.

Cody1991 on September 12, 2012 at 10:47 AM

Are they really going to stick to the lie that those savages were taking his dead body to the hospital????? I guess we can safely assume that this president is going to do NOTHING about these attacks!

texgal on September 12, 2012 at 10:47 AM

Barry repeating the big lie that Libya stands with us, took the ambassador to the hospital. Like poison I loathe him.

Naturally Curly on September 12, 2012 at 10:47 AM

I thought that it was a joke that he was making Hillary go out there with him! I bet he DOES make her answer the questions- Lord, but Obama is a human waste.

I’ll be very curious to hear the weight Obama gives the reason for this riot, the reason of “our Prophet was slandered”. Will he, as his administration has done so many times in the past, caution us about the sensitivities Muslims have about their Prophet? Will he ask people to watch what they say and do?

Paul-Cincy on September 12, 2012 at 10:45 AM

The rat-eared bastard is speaking now. Saying nothing worth mentioning. Now transitioning into talking about the commeroration of 9/11/01 and talking about himself.

Happy Nomad on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

What an odd speech by Obama.

ORconservative on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

That’s all??! Not taking questions.

esr1951 on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

bgibbs1000 on September 12, 2012 at 10:46 AM

You’ve gotta be kidding me. How tone-deaf is this idiot? The last thing you do is echo in any capacity the traitorous and condescending statement by the embassy yesterday.

Doughboy on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

He chickened out! What a shock!

birdwatcher on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

No questions?

BettyRuth on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Took him to the hospital, my hindquarters. Obama, you useless Dhimmi.

Can we remove him from OUR house, right now?

kingsjester on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

you’re an idiot Barry

Slade73 on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

NO QUESTIONS! I really can’t believe this.

Naturally Curly on September 12, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Slade73 on September 12, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Why does he bark out his sentences.

esr1951 on September 12, 2012 at 10:45 AM

affenhauer on September 12, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Not taking any questions. Just walking off as though he’s sad.

Gutless.

Cody1991 on September 12, 2012 at 10:49 AM

So Rockybama outsourced the embassy’s security and we have four dead Americans.

tommer74 on September 12, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Incredibly weak. NO questions.

Obama has been on a campaign to diminish our influence, our prestige, and our power around the world, but especially in the Middle East. He is doing a helluva job.

novaculus on September 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Where the hell were our embassy Marines?

jake-the-goose on September 12, 2012 at 10:36 AM

The embassy did not have any Marines stationed at the embassy on Obama’s directive. Our embassy personnel were ordered by this administration to be guarded by Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers only.

HotAirian on September 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

BettyRuth on September 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Absolutely pathetic, not answering any questions. And alluding to the denegration of religious beliefs by others. No doubt now whatsoever his administration was behind the embassy press release yesterday.

bgibbs1000 on September 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

That wasn’t even a strongly worded statement. What WAS that?

esr1951 on September 12, 2012 at 10:50 AM

No questons? Sickening. His words sounded so empty and detached. It’s just shocking.
