Audio: Press caught on open mic coordinating Egypt/Libya questions for Romney?

posted at 3:21 pm on September 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

I don’t think it’s the collusion that’s troubling so much as their priorities in what they were colluding on. Hard to make firm judgments on a 100-second piece of audio that cuts in and out and is sporadically unintelligible, but part of it is clear enough. From the Right Scoop’s transcript:

CBS REPORTER: Yeah that’s the question. I would just say do you regret your question.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Your question? Your statement?

CBS REPORTER: I mean your statement. Not even the tone, because then he can go off on…

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: And then if he does, if we can just follow up and say ‘but this morning your answer is continuing to sound…’ – *becomes unintelligble*

CBS REPORTER: You can’t say that..

**Later**

CBS REPORTER: I’m just trying to make sure that we’re just talking about, no matter who he calls on we’re covered on the one question.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Do you stand by your statement or regret your statement?

Someone sent Jake Tapper the link to the audio and asked him if this is business as usual. His reply:

But then he added:

In other words, knowing that they’ll have a select few opportunities to press Romney this morning, the press might have huddled to make sure that different angles of the story would be covered in the Q&A — one person asks him how he’d alter current U.S. policy on Egypt and Libya, one person asks him how to balance free-speech principles with concerns about provocations, etc etc. Instead he got five sub-moronic questions about the tone and timing of his statement last night, which was issued before anyone even knew that Chris Stevens had been killed in Libya. This latest iteration of the media’s “WHAT ABOUT YOUR GAFFES?” idiocy towards Romney is transparently a bit of concern-trolling designed to change the subject from Obama dropping the ball on security for the consulate in Libya — and that’s precisely what they seem to be coordinating on in the audio clip. They’re huddling to make sure that someone asks him the concern-troll question about the optics of his statement, because evidently that’s the one topic America needed him to address this morning, you see. It’s dishonest on its own terms, in fact: Even if, for whatever bizarre reason, your chief concern this morning was whether someone “jumped the gun” in saying something impolitic, the story should have been why the Cairo embassy’s craven statement yesterday jumped the gun on the White House’s reaction. But this is what you get when most of your national media is openly playing for one team.

Click the image below to listen. Exit quotation via conventional-wisdom-setter Mark Halperin, helpfully nudging the media on what its news narrative should be this morning: “[Romney's] doubling down on criticism of the President for the statement coming out of Cairo is likely to be seen as one of the most craven and ill-advised tactical moves in this entire campaign.”

There is clearly a rapidly spreading fear among the press that this will turn into Iran 1979 unless the story can somehow be made about Romney. New media meme by the end of the week: “Did Mitt Romney caused the embassy attacks to happen?”

This is how the media creates a news controversy. They coordinate on a single White House talking-point question and they all hammer away at Romney over and over again. Then they all report on it as news of growing questions over Romney’s “controversial” statement.

The girl in the middle sure sounds like the “reporter” who heckled Romney in Poland. If you remember that event, it was also a coordinated affair designed to heckle and badger Romney in order to make him look bad. You can see that she is joking about that event when she repeatedly says “Governor” while smiling in what seems like an inside joke between the media members. She’s saying “remember the last time we conspired against Romney in Poland and I kept yelling Governor over and over?”

OxyCon on September 12, 2012 at 3:29 PM

Mitt Romney has just unveiled his new campaign strategy. Forget about the campaign, and just act as if he were already President. Respond to events, give speeches, as if he already held the office. Going to New Orleans before Obama was the trial run, now this. Great stuff. The Obama campaign wants to frame this election as a choice, fine, give them a choice. Remind the public how a real President acts. The more Romney does this stuff, the more he looks good. Who cares what the press does or says. They are the enemy. Go over their heads like Reagan did. The American people, or what’s left of them, will see.

The administration has given an official story about the embassy attacks that now appears to be factually incorrect.

The Lying Mainstream Media coordinated attacks on Romney in an attempt to get him to say something they can pounce on. Anyone listening to their questions could see it was a liberal, propaganda, inquisition.

Does anyone now wonder why the Seal Team 6 member felt compelled to write his book correcting Obama’s lies on the Osama Bin Laden raid? Or question the fact that Romney felt the need to comment on the embassy attacks.

The Obama administration has stooped so low, these people have been forced to use unconventional methods to get the truth out any way they can. The truth won’t issue forth from the White House or its liberal liars who aid and abet them. Truth is a foreign term for this administration and it propagandists.

Did anyone believe years ago that the media would turn into the pitiful state it’s now in?

Obama has no intel briefings for 7 days during the run up to the anniversary of 9 / 11.

Our embassies in the Middle East are not being adequately protected, and yet the staff was left in place and vulnerable.

Americans were murdered and their bodies dragged through the streets. Al Qaeda hoisted it’s flag on US territory on 9/11.

The Egyptian embassy and Hilary Clinton issue statements condemning American freedom of speech. Obama issues a weak statement that only adds to the confusion…

Don’t be naive, Jake. You’ve strayed too far from the plantation boundaries enough times in the past by, yanno, doing your job that the rest of the gang at ABC aren’t going to let you in on the joke.

And by joke, I mean the intent to work 24/7 on Obama’s re-election campaign.

Want to bet when more is known, ABC, NBC and CNN were in on it too?

“[Romney's] doubling down on criticism of the President for the statement coming out of Cairo is likely to be seen as one of the most craven and ill-advised tactical moves in this entire campaign.”

Wrong, you little Obama butt-boy. The only way this will backfire on Mitt is if he apologizes for and retracts what he said.

You’ll have to pardon the MSM, they’re too busy humping Barry’s leg and making him look good.

GarandFan on September 12, 2012 at 3:48 PM

heh, maybe we should refer to them as ‘humpers’ from now on.

Top 10 list of questions you won’t hear at Obama’s press conferences:
#10–When will you stop taking responsibility for things that go wrong during your watch?
#9–You love golf so much yet haven’t played in months. How do you fill the void?
#8–Where are the jobs, Mr. President, that you promised?
#7–Will your campaign be visiting all 57 states, with one more to go, again this time around?
#6–Instead of focusing on beer recipes, shouldn’t you sit down with your economic team over a beer?
#5–We haven’t heard from your wife in a while, is she okay?
#4–Will you and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton finally admit that the Arab Spring was a mistake?
#3–How’s your brother?
#2–Eric Holder, really? You’re keeping him around?
and the #1 question you’ll never hear at an Obama presser:
(said between reporters)
CBS REPORTER: I’m just trying to make sure that we’re just talking about, no matter who he calls on we’re covered on the one question

SHOCKER – obama’s state-run media coordinating their meme/spin/attacks against Romney. WOW – that comes as a complete surprise!
