U.S. embassy in Cairo apologizes for “abuse of free speech” after protesters tear down American flag

posted at 5:21 pm on September 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

A show of strength from Salafists on 9/11 to remind Americans who’s winning these days in the Middle East. The newsworthy part isn’t the protest — we already know what a mob can do to an embassy in Cairo — but the reaction from the embassy. When this tweet started circulating a few hours ago, I thought it might be a parody account. Afraid not. The official statement from the embassy website:

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others

The money word there, of course, is “abuse.” If speech is illegitimate because it offends religious sensibilities, then we’re on the doorstep of yelling “blasphemy.” In practical effect, that’s what the embassy is pushing: There’s not a syllable wasted here on condemning the cretins who climbed the embassy walls and tore down the flag — on 9/11. The denunciation is reserved for the blasphemers, who in this case turn out to be Egyptian expats who made an amateur film about Mohammed that’s presumably being used by Islamist demagogues over there to whip up the crowd. Every now and then, the Organization of the Islamic Conference pushes a blasphemy resolution at the UN designed to carve out international exceptions to free speech laws for insults to religion, i.e. Islam. The statement from the embassy is precisely the mentality they’re trying to cultivate. All that’s missing is a call for criminal penalties, but that’s less important to the anti-blasphemy bloc than western officials groveling to their sensibilities. Mission accomplished.

Do note, this isn’t the only criticism of Islam that’s been suppressed today due to fears of violence. In the UK, a private screening of a new documentary on the subject was canceled due to threats. I wonder if The One will get so much as a single question about this, and what he’ll say in defense of the embassy’s reaction. The last time we went through the now familiar “insult to Islam inspires international incident” cycle, he begged Terry Jones publicly not to burn the Koran because doing so would endanger U.S. troops. That was clever insofar as it’s hard to resist an appeal to patriotism from the C-in-C but it has the same problem as the embassy statement — namely, placing the moral onus on the speaker not to speak rather than on the violent nut not to be nutty and violent. Is O going to phone the Egyptian expats and ask them to take up another hobby besides filmmaking? Curious to see how far this logic extends.

But I wonder if the feds will issue anything like this the next time some artist puts a crucifix in urine?

IlikedAUH2O on September 11, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Are you kidding? They’ll give him a federal grant so he can create more avant garde artworks, and they’ll put his urine piece on a national tour so it can be viewed by school kids across the U.S., to enhance their multi-cultural learning perspective.

Maybe we should include a new item in the next GOP Platform.

-If a foreign country cannot protect a US Embassy against intrusion, the Embassy shall be closed and all aid to that foreign country shall be discontinued until such time that the Embassy can be safely opened/reopened.

But only if it offends Muslim sensibilities. Other religions are fair game for offensive speech. Islam is special. It must be appeased. Else Muslims get violent and start killing people.

I personally think it’s wrong to say hateful things, but the answer to bad speech is good speech. When man is the one defining good and bad, especially.

Catholics and Protestants don’t even fight any more in Northern Ireland, which was more politically than religiously motivated.

These are the same people that had me in stitches by claiming that we could have one in Afganistan even easier if we had sent 10,000 peace ambassadors to “love them” to peace. There would be 10,000 skulls in separate graves from their bodies! I almost encouraged the woman telling me this to go and try, just so her stupidity would be gone.

nathor on September 11, 2012 at 6:13 PM

Yes, it is. Other major religions have started “holy wars,” but over genuine threats. The Jews warred with their neighbors in the Old Testament times because their neighbors wanted to obliterate them, as now. The Crusades weren’t because Muslims were writing plays insulting Christians, they were about the land itself and taking territory.

Religions have fought over land and wealth, but ONLY ONE wants to kill over JUST WORDS and IMAGES. Words were sometimes used as a cover for “religious based” land or power grabs, but that was not the motivation.

The Koran and Haddith both advocate killing Christians and Jews just because they don’t believe. Period. They also command it for insulting their prophet. Muslims are ignoring explicit commands in their holy books by NOT killing us JUST FOR NOT BEING MUSLIM. No other major religion commands killing people for not being part of their religion.

According to the website http://www.standupamericanow.org, Jones and others were due to take part in an event on Tuesday – the anniversary of the September 11 attacks by al Qaeda on U.S. cities – called “International Judge Mohammad Day” in Florida. It was due to be carried live on the Internet.

There will have to come a time when a US embassy must be defended with lethal force. There will have to come a time when we prove to the mobs that if you attack a US embassy, you’re going to get shot.

If we try to ignore such violations of our national sovereignty, using toothless diplomatic gestures and empty speeches of condemnation, it’s going to keep happening and eventually we’ll get another case like Tehran.

Toothless response was how we dealt with the early attacks by al Qaeda during the Clinton years, and look where that led. The mobs in Muslim lands see Western restraint as a sign of gutlessness, and respond by escalation.

Your spiritual forefather Epicurus is imagined to have worn a toga, to have lived on bread and water as much as possible, and to have pursued the absence of pain as the greatest pleasure. His followers, predictably, began to slather themselves in lard, gorge, and get busy — turns out the greatest pleasure was not the absence of pain after all. Since your morality is utilitarian, many of your coreligionists have assumed vast power and decided “right” was sort of what they wanted, and “wrong” was sort of what they didn’t like, so “many” sort of needed to “go away.”

At this point, by your own logic, you would be accusing atheists — say Allahpundit — of wearing togas, eating bread, slathering up in lard and getting busy, assuming despotic power and committing genocide.

But that would be silly. Allahpundit is a beta — he’ll never have despotic power.

You should be able to tell religions apart, and refusing to do it is ignorance or dishonesty.

Yes, it is. Other major religions have started “holy wars,” but over genuine threats. The Jews warred with their neighbors in the Old Testament times because their neighbors wanted to obliterate them, as now. The Crusades weren’t because Muslims were writing plays insulting Christians, they were about the land itself and taking territory.

blabla. we are talking about blasphemy laws.
i havent time for a exaustive research but this is the last time someone was executed for blasphemy in england:
http://www25.uua.org/uuhs/duub/articles/thomasaikenhead.html
ancient jewish laws for blasphemy with prescribed death sentances:
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/3354-blasphemy

Religions have fought over land and wealth, but ONLY ONE wants to kill over JUST WORDS and IMAGES. Words were sometimes used as a cover for “religious based” land or power grabs, but that was not the motivation.

wrong! and I just gave historical proofs in the links above that both christians and jews had death penalty for blasphemy

PastorJon on September 11, 2012 at 6:21 PM

I give to you that islam is more explicit regarding their blasphemy laws. but historically they are not unique in their death sentences for blasphemy.

ABC News Radio is not even reporting this.

They led off with the stock market. And no mention of QE3.

Reports keep mentioning a “black flag” like it’s a bunch of Egyptian pirates or punk rockers? IIRC, isn’t it more accurately described as the flag of al-Qaeda?

Christien on September 11, 2012 at 6:03 PM

It can’t be. The regime keeps telling us that we’ve destroyed al Queda. (And d’ohbama, of course, killed bin laden) That’s why we’re fighting the Taliban…or something.
So, it must be egyptian pirates or punk rockers. Or, perhaps #OWS has opened up a branch office in egypt.

Ron Paul: “If we hadn’t offended these people by putting an embassy right smack in the middle of Cairo this never would’ve happened.”

This just has to be a joke.

Un-friggin’ believable. How the heck did we get to this insane point in history? We need a reset button stat.

I know where you’re coming from, but after the 9/11 attacks, how else would a CiC keep national calm ?
I don’t for one moment that he actually EVER believed what he HAD to say.

pambi on September 11, 2012 at 6:36 PM

It was a mistake for him to presume to keep “national calm”. We had just been attacked, dammit. Aggresively and open-faced. It was not the time for national calm, and it was certainly not the time to tell the sheeple that it was safe to go back to sleep.

Ya let a few folks abuse free speech, and soon you’ll have…what? Liberty? See? This kind of thing never leads anywhere good.

Rational Thought on September 11, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Øbama hosts Muslim Brotherhood, but refuses to meet with Bibi.

The build-up of ME tensions is accelerating. At this rate, Turdboy will be lucky to get to November without it blowing up around us.

petefrt on September 11, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Either BHO approved the embassy’s message before release, or the State Department went ahead on their own.

Either way, I am not sure which is worse, but BHO has got to go.

America has a wuss for a president. And, you had better believe the Terrorists are gauging his reaction to this and are emboldened.

kingsjester on September 11, 2012 at 6:35 PM
