Senior administration official: The Cairo embassy’s statement does not reflect the view of the U.S. government; Update: Romney calls embassy statement “disgraceful”

posted at 10:34 pm on September 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

I thought the White House might decide to keep quiet on this and hope that the media doesn’t press too hard tomorrow. And I think they would have, if not for the fact that Romney’s surely ready to go nuclear on them for it and force the issue. Remember, thanks to a few openings created by Mitt (most notably forgetting to thank the troops in his convention speech), Obama’s angling to frame himself as President Foreign Policy for the stretch run to election day. How would that play if he’s suddenly being hammered tomorrow for Apology Tour 2012?

So here’s the walkback. You know who’s going to have a fun day on Wednesday? Jay Carney.

The White House is disavowing a statement from their own Cairo embassy that apologized for anti-Muslim activity in the United States.

“The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government,” a senior administration official told POLITICO…

“Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Tuesday statement.

Here’s the last tweet from Cairo embassy account, posted three hours ago as I write this:

https://twitter.com/USEmbassyCairo/status/245665697408102400

Really looking forward to hearing Carney explain which part of the embassy’s earlier statement failed to represent the views of the U.S. government. I want to hear it in his own words; hopefully the press corps will make him elaborate. If the White House rejects the idea that criticizing religion constitutes an “abuse” of free speech, then good for them. But let’s get it on the record, because we all know there’ll be more incidents of embassies stormed and people shot over “insults” to Islam — quite possibly in Afghanistan — and the tune’s likely to change later as political circumstances demand.

Exit quotation from the Muslim Brotherhood’s Twitter account:

Update: Like I was saying, Obama had no choice but to retreat. Here comes Mitt:

I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

I’m watching a replay of 9/11 right now, and just when I think I couldn’t get any angrier, I am.

I’m watching people choosing to jump 100 floors, instead of burning to death.

I’m watching police and fire crews RUSHING to the scene in order to help. a lot of them ultimately to their death.

I’m watching a jaded city realize they are not immune to what happens outside our borders.

I’m watching American’s come together to help one another, because that’s what we do.

And today, we have a president who will not even participate in a moment, a moment folks, of silence for those who were lost.

I am very angry, and sad today. I’m tired of feeling this way.

This looks as if the senior adm denial is out to attempt to give political cover to Obama.

Anne Patterson is the Ambassador to Egypt. She was two years behind Hillary at Wellesley.

Hillary condemned the attack in Benghazi, but has said nothing about what happened in Egypt.

Yeah so they are d i c k h e a d s but their gesture is non-violent and you need to differentiate between non-violent stupidity and the stupidity on show today at the Libyan consular office and the Egyptian embassy. That’s the real issue at play.

You know, I’ve seen a quote from BIDEN calling the remembrance of 9/11 “BITTERSWEET”.

Let me give you another quote regarding the nature of “BITTERSWEET”.

“… bitter-sweet, as the last kiss on the lips of a discarded mistress.” Marie Corelli- “Wormwood”.

Obama is going to know that kind of ‘bittersweet’… as we kiss him off and discard him once and for all on November 6th.

thatsafactjack on September 12, 2012 at 12:57 AM

I think there are valid reasons for this but to dismiss the agony of Afghanistan does the way VorDaj does shows that people have not been following events in Afghanistan.

lexhamfox on September 12, 2012 at 12:45 AM

The truth is that Afghanistan will likely never change. It is our folly to attempt to lead them into the modern era when all they know is tribalism, death, misogyny, bigoted hatred, and more importantly, deception sanctioned by their so-called holy book.

We should have gotten out of there once the Taliban was broken, moved on to Pock-ee-ston, secured their nukes, then said to hell with all of them.

India should be our partner in that region.

I see some people are confused about what constitutes an apology.

According to dictionary.com: “a written or spoken expression of one’s regret, remorse, or sorrow for having insulted, failed, injured, or wronged another.” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/apology)
According to oxforddictionaries.com: “a regretful acknowledgement of an offence or failure.” (http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/apology)

What they said:

U.S. Embassy Condemns Religious Incitement
September 11, 2012

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others

gophergirl on September 11, 2012 at 11:55 PM

Translation in non-diplomat speak: “Those mean people who hurt your feelings shouldn’t have done it, and we hate what they’ve done. We’re good people. We know better than to do stuff like this. Honest. Again, those mean people who used their hurtful words are bad, bad, bad.”

Is there a stronger form of regret than self-condemnation? If the embassy were not in the position of representing America abroad, then it would just be a condemnation of Americans exercising their First Amendment rights. But since the embassy does represent America, it’s a contrite repudiation of acts taken by Americans…essentially a very wordy “Oops. Our bad. Please don’t hate us.” Yep, that’s an apology.

And…my apologies :) if someone else has already written something like this. The thread is moving too quickly for me to keep up!

A tad off course,PPP was to release there Ohio Poll
on Wednesday, don’t think this is it tho!!
==========================================

September 11, 2012
Ohio Miscellany

-Sherrod Brown continues to hold a good sized lead in the Ohio Senate race, 48-40 over Josh Mandel. Brown is not a popular incumbent. Only 42% of voters approve of the job he’s doing to 44% who disapprove. But Mandel is not proving to be a strong challenger either, with 33% of voters rating him favorably to 44% with a negative opinion.

A few things stick out in the crosstabs. Brown is winning over 16% of Republican voters, while losing just 10% of Democrats. And even though Barack Obama trailed with independents on this poll, Brown has a 44-40 advantage with them. Brown is winning with white voters, 46-44, and any time a Democrat can manage that they’re going to win in Ohio. Brown’s still not cracking 50% but Mandel’s road to victory looks pretty tough.

There is no “working with Afghanistan.” It is a fool’s errand. We should have left them to their miseries, along with Pockeeston a long time ago. All that we’ve been doing is standing up a Pakistani regime that is “sort of” for us when it’s convenient, and against us all of the time — and blowing hundreds of billions of sawbucks doing it.

Pakistan has been the most important reason that our efforts in Afghanistan will ultimately be in vain.

Again, India should be our partner and ally in that region for various and obvious reasons.

Not hunting down and destroying terrorists worldwide led to 911. Playing games with terrorists led to 911 and that is something that we have continued to do with backing the KLA, soft soaping the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt or assisting the rebels in Libya.

Occupying Afghanistan isn’t going to prevent them from operating in Somalia, or Libya, or Pakistan, or Syria, or Algeria. We cannot occupy all of those nations, nor should we occupy Afghanistan.

You can’t turn around decades of the cold war on a dime. India does not trust the US yet and India is not the solution to Afghanistan’s ills anymore than Pakistan was in the time between the Soviet invasion and 9-11. It will take decades to undo the cold war calculations made in the region.

Yes there is working with Afghanistan. They put more hurt on the Soviets than anyone else did and we do have a responsibility to them and to protect our own country from the elements that would thrive if we ever ignored the country. It’s difficult but far from a ‘fools errand’ as you suggest.

That says all you need to know about the true feelings of liberals. he also seemed unaware that Christians are murdered every day by Muslims. Because if they were, Obama would condemn such acts with harsh words.
Oh. Wait. They are. And Obama actually seems to approve of Jews and Christians being slaughtered by these animals. If silence is an indication.

Afghanistan has suffered in the last eleven years more than the US. Statistics support that. Coalition deaths and casualties easily exceed those on 9-11 and Afghan casualties are significantly higher again. I think there are valid reasons for this but to dismiss the agony of Afghanistan does the way VorDaj does shows that people have not been following events in Afghanistan.

lexhamfox on September 12, 2012 at 12:45 AM

You do realize that in a successful war, you make the enemy suffer more than you have in order to make sure that said enemy can no longer wage war on you, right? We did not start this war, Afghanistan did by harboring Al Queada and refusing to turn over the terrorists after 9/11. As a result, yes, we took the war to them, unlike the rest of the western world that has always appeased terrorists or refused to go after them because the states in which they are harbored weren’t officially at war with us. Yes, the Afghanis have suffered as a consequence of their actions. It appears that they still aren’t willing to give up their terrorist ties even today. Now, you would really scream if we did what should be done with such an obstinate people, so I’m not really sure what you expected to happen. We should have just gone in, killed 3000 Taliban and called it even?

Not hunting down and destroying terrorists worldwide led to 911. Playing games with terrorists led to 911 and that is something that we have continued to do with backing the KLA, soft soaping the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt or assisting the rebels in Libya.

Occupying Afghanistan isn’t going to prevent them from operating in Somalia, or Libya, or Pakistan, or Syria, or Algeria. We cannot occupy all of those nations, nor should we occupy Afghanistan.

sharrukin on September 12, 2012 at 1:12 AM

Well we played the game to beat the Soviets. Are you suggesting that we should not have used the Mujihadeen to fight the Soviets?

I agree that an occupation is counterproductive but we don’t occupy Afghanistan or any other nation.

Yes there is working with Afghanistan.

It’s not working.

If the U.S. government and the electorate had the balls to do it properly, it could work quite well, but it just ain’t happening. I stand by my post.

So it takes a couple of decades to get where we need to be regarding India and the region at large. It doesn’t mean that we don’t begin the task of doing it.

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day (and, most relevantly, its decline wasn’t obvious to those living it.)

John Milton, in his prose masterpiece, “Paradise Lost”, includes a passage wherein an angel, sent by God to instruct Adam, tells Adam that we have been granted free will.

The phrase used to express this truth stands out to me, and rings in my memory.

“… strong enough to stand, yet free to fall.”

We, all of us, are strong enough to stand. We only fall, if we choose it.

I believe, as a nation, we have that same choice.

Obama must be defeated at the polls in November.

America must choose to stand.

Burn in hell you bunch of barbarian goat fuc*ers!!

EL-ARISH, Egypt – U.S. diplomatic compounds came under attack in two Muslim countries on Tuesday, with the walls of the embassy in Cairo breached by protesters and a consulate in Libya under attack by militants.

A group of protesters scaled the wall of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday evening and entered its outer grounds, pulled down an American flag, then tried to burn it outside the embassy walls, according to witnesses. In Benghazi, Libya, the consulate was attacked by militants, and Libyan and American officials were working to secure the compound, a State Department spokeswoman said. [...]

Earlier Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy in Egypt had condemned insults to religion, saying in a statement that “we firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”

A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, of which Morsi is a member, said that the United States should do a better job of protecting Islam.

“It isn’t a matter of freedom of speech,” said Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Gozlan. “It’s a matter of a holy Islamic symbol.”

Flora Duh on September 12, 2012 at 1:34 AM

Attacking our embassies on September 11th not only echoes and supports the 9/11 attacks, but also the Iranian takeover of the US Embassy in 1979 – the first official act of radical islamists in power.

Who gives a rat’s patootie what lame excuse these barbarians use? These “friendly” governments should have been quickly reminded via back channels that we are the wrong people to tick off, and to call off their dogs – or else.

created a video that was heavily publicized and demagogued in egypt.

That is not at all what I am suggesting. What I am suggesting is that we quit pretending that Kabul and Islamabad are ever going to be our allies even at the end of a big stick.
