Senior administration official: The Cairo embassy’s statement does not reflect the view of the U.S. government; Update: Romney calls embassy statement “disgraceful”

posted at 10:34 pm on September 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

I thought the White House might decide to keep quiet on this and hope that the media doesn’t press too hard tomorrow. And I think they would have, if not for the fact that Romney’s surely ready to go nuclear on them for it and force the issue. Remember, thanks to a few openings created by Mitt (most notably forgetting to thank the troops in his convention speech), Obama’s angling to frame himself as President Foreign Policy for the stretch run to election day. How would that play if he’s suddenly being hammered tomorrow for Apology Tour 2012?

So here’s the walkback. You know who’s going to have a fun day on Wednesday? Jay Carney.

The White House is disavowing a statement from their own Cairo embassy that apologized for anti-Muslim activity in the United States.

“The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government,” a senior administration official told POLITICO…

“Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Tuesday statement.

Here’s the last tweet from Cairo embassy account, posted three hours ago as I write this:

https://twitter.com/USEmbassyCairo/status/245665697408102400

Really looking forward to hearing Carney explain which part of the embassy’s earlier statement failed to represent the views of the U.S. government. I want to hear it in his own words; hopefully the press corps will make him elaborate. If the White House rejects the idea that criticizing religion constitutes an “abuse” of free speech, then good for them. But let’s get it on the record, because we all know there’ll be more incidents of embassies stormed and people shot over “insults” to Islam — quite possibly in Afghanistan — and the tune’s likely to change later as political circumstances demand.

Exit quotation from the Muslim Brotherhood’s Twitter account:

Update: Like I was saying, Obama had no choice but to retreat. Here comes Mitt:

I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

No of course not. Romney should have called a press conference and issued the statement himself live in front of cameras to show how disgusted he is. That would have carried a lot more weight than simply issuing a statement.

bgibbs1000 on September 11, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Bolded part was all that needed to be said. You either believe in free speech or you don’t. But it’s not as if this administration has been about protecting our rights and freedoms anyway.

How in the hell can Obama even be close in the polls when these are the typical events of the day? Man…people in this country are stupid.

I thought the White House might decide to keep quiet on this and hope that the media doesn’t press too hard tomorrow. And I think they would have, if not for the fact that Romney’s surely ready to go nuclear on them for it and force the issue.

They might have … until the U.S. embassy attack in Libya and the American fatality there. Once that came out, Team Obama couldn’t have the apology juxtaposed with the death, because there’s no way to spin the apology statement as a way of just trying to allow the Muslim rioters to ‘let off steam’.

Romney still needs to go after this as a show of Carteresque weakness, and proof that the radicals didn’t just hate the United States because there was a Republican in the White House. Obama’s going to try and play up his foreign policy expertise, and today’s events go against that argument. But the media will still spin any attacks as Mitt’s version of the same sort of “cowboy diplomacy” they attacked Reagan and GWB for, so he’s going to have to make clear what his positions are when it comes to attacks on U.S. interests overseas.

Remember that this is still a foreign policy matter and a certain amount of circumspection is required to avoid meddling in current administration policies. We would say the same thing to a democrat challenger to a Republican president. Romney’s response hit the right notes.

Well, technically under international diplomatic rules Embassy grounds are national soil with some sovereign rights. So, it was 9/11, and we have burglars and vandals on our soil in Egypt.

It’s not clear to me what a consulate’s status is, so in Libya we at the very least have murderers as thanks for our “help” in ousting Gaddafi.

Mohammad is never mentioned anywhere for over 80 years after he supposedly did the things he did. No coins no records nothing. There is no evidence that started in Mecca in fact the plants he supposedly grew will not grow there and never have. He was invented by one of several warring warlords. This man assembled all the great tales he could find and combined them he then artificially dated the record he wrote and claimed to have found it. It was just a way to gain control.

We have to start telling the truth about Islam. It is not a religion it is our most dangerous enemy. The religious aspect of it is simply a method of control. A method to hide it’s true self. A method to lull enemies asleep so they can be slaughtered. There is no tolerance in Islam for any other religion, system, beliefs or anything else. Islam does not even allow you to allow other Islamic to live in peace with you. Your brand must be supreme. That is why peaceful Islam is an oxymoron.

If a Bush ambassador made a basic mistake like this, the liberals would be calling for his or her head, and not the head of some underling who can conveniently be thrown under the bus.

I’m expecting Anne W. Paterson to be replaced any day now. She is a career foreign service officer, but I doubt she will survive this.

Obama was instrumental in calling for Mubarak to go in the Arab Spring which not coincidentally brings us to where we are now.

Carter’s sandbagging the Shah also had implications back in 1979. In the real world, actions, or non-actions have consequences which is why some of us prefer presidents who understand cause and effect and long term implications.

This disavowal is total bullcrap. They let the embassy statement stand for what, 8 or 9 hours. Only after someone gets killed and they realize this thing is about to blow up do they come out and say, “we didn’t approve that pathetic statement”. Sorry, Barry, you own it. And if Mitt is smart he’ll rub your nose in it all week long.

Speaking of Mitt, it’s a nice statement. But he needs to keep hammering this and the Bibi snub over the next few days. I understand the singular focus on the economy and jobs, but you got to take advantage of current events. Mix in an ad or two showing him bowing, highlighting this embassy statement, showing the al qaeda flag flying over our embassy. Really hammer him. Take Obama’s supposed strength (foreign policy) and turn it against him right now. Attack, attack, attack. Now.

Of course we are blaming him correctly so. He handed these two countries Egypt and Libya to islamic terrorists… And his State department released a statement attacking our freedom of speech to appease terrorists after they attacked our embassy in Egypt and raised Al Qaeda flag after they torn down our flag… Go f*** yourself liberal scum…

Romney is, as he so often does, missing an opportunity. He should have said that in a Romney Administration, there would be accountability for such stupidity. He’d find out who authorized this statement and call them on the carpet and that any additional mistake on their part would result in firing.

edshepp on September 11, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Weak. The person who put out the statement – for all we know it was pre-approved – should be fired.

Where are the calls to halt our current exercise with Egypt?
Where are the calls to suspend / end the billion in aid we give to these turds?
Where are the calls to machinegun that mob?

The wussification of America is well underway. We need a Pax Americana, our responses to such transgressions should be so massive, our retaliation so destructive, that nations such as Egypt quake at the idea of crossing us. Instead we are supine, we pay the jizya to islamic dogs, we let our sovereign territory be invaded, we let a foreign mob rule.

/but enough about CAIR, illegal aliens and the President

Obama met with Netanyahu today and he disavowed the embassy statement so what can Romney say besides talking up the ‘confusion’ in foreign affairs? If he had spoken earlier he could have made it look like Obama was responding to Romney’s criticism and scored some political points. Now its going to be weak sauce.

sharrukin on September 11, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Onama did WHAT?

You must have some REAL talent when it comes to reporting.
For crying out loud.

Tenwheeler on September 11, 2012 at 11:11 PM

sharrukin lied as usual. His only mission in posting is to bash Romney. He is now even making excuses for Barry.

There was mo meeting. Barry made a hurried phone call to Netanyahu tonight for damage control after the diss came out in open.

President Barack Obama talked with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a call Tuesday night about the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program, according to a White House statement.

Obama placed the call to Netanyahu, a senior administration official told CNN.

The one-paragraph statement from the White House, which referred to the Obama-Netanyahu discussion as “a part of their ongoing consultations,” followed reports earlier in the day that the White House had rejected a request by Netanyahu to meet with Obama this month to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.

What Barry siad may not be more than him saying ” call me maybe” or some generality.
