Senior administration official: The Cairo embassy’s statement does not reflect the view of the U.S. government; Update: Romney calls embassy statement “disgraceful”

posted at 10:34 pm on September 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

I thought the White House might decide to keep quiet on this and hope that the media doesn’t press too hard tomorrow. And I think they would have, if not for the fact that Romney’s surely ready to go nuclear on them for it and force the issue. Remember, thanks to a few openings created by Mitt (most notably forgetting to thank the troops in his convention speech), Obama’s angling to frame himself as President Foreign Policy for the stretch run to election day. How would that play if he’s suddenly being hammered tomorrow for Apology Tour 2012?

So here’s the walkback. You know who’s going to have a fun day on Wednesday? Jay Carney.

The White House is disavowing a statement from their own Cairo embassy that apologized for anti-Muslim activity in the United States.

“The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government,” a senior administration official told POLITICO…

“Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Tuesday statement.

Here’s the last tweet from Cairo embassy account, posted three hours ago as I write this:

https://twitter.com/USEmbassyCairo/status/245665697408102400

Really looking forward to hearing Carney explain which part of the embassy’s earlier statement failed to represent the views of the U.S. government. I want to hear it in his own words; hopefully the press corps will make him elaborate. If the White House rejects the idea that criticizing religion constitutes an “abuse” of free speech, then good for them. But let’s get it on the record, because we all know there’ll be more incidents of embassies stormed and people shot over “insults” to Islam — quite possibly in Afghanistan — and the tune’s likely to change later as political circumstances demand.

Exit quotation from the Muslim Brotherhood’s Twitter account:

Update: Like I was saying, Obama had no choice but to retreat. Here comes Mitt:

I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

Hey lefty trolls, if speech is free, it can’t be “abused”. Only a privilige can be abused. So here goes my free speech for today:

At the risk of being rude, get back to us when it is your folks. We’ve seen this before, you’ll have to excuse us if we didn’t think it went well the first time around. Some how, some way these people have to learn that they cannot attack a entire nation because they are offended.

Who sent the tweet from the embassy?
Did they act alone?
Did the entire embassy staff agree to send it out?
Did they do it in the spur of the emotional/life threatening moment?

At the risk of being rude, you need to react like a responsible adult and find out all the facts before you jump on the blame wagon.

And comparing 1979 to this week is beyond ludicrous.

Cindy Munford on September 12, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Romney, this morning:

ROMNEY: The embassy in Cairo put out a statement after their grounds had been breached

This is entirely factually incorrect.

ROMNEY: …they reiterated that statement after the breach

This is entirely factually incorrect.

ROMNEY: They clearly sent mixed messages to the world, and the statement that came from the administration, and the embassy is the administration. The statement that came from the administration was a statement which is akin to apology and I think was a severe miscalculation.

So what he’s saying is no administration can ever issue a clarification or correction for anything that happens ever.

What a f*cking bozo. And I thank him for digging his hole of stupid deeper and deeper.

1 Mittens released his moronic statement before there was even official confirmation of Steven’s death.

2 His moronic statement contained no condolences for the victims.

I believe the words you’re searching for are “f*cking bozo”.

“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”

Show me where the appeasement is.

This?

“Give it up Drywall, everybody, including members of the media thought it was the official statement of the administration until they walked it back LAST NIGHT after getting hammered on it all day.”

My response is:

A tweet sent out before anything happened cannot possibly be “the official statement of the administration”.

In the heat of the moment(s) during the escalation of the situation and the ensuing violence someone at the embassy under f*cking attack failed to clarify a tweet, and somehow, from the safety of your couch, that isn’t good enough for you.

It’s appeasement because sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me. These people have got to grow up. They cannot hold a nation responsible for an individuals legal actions. The Mid East needs to learn to wear big boy pants and turn the other cheek.

But the tweet isn’t what Romney nor Kirsten Powers nor other members were referring to when condemning the embassy’s original response.

The were referring to the official statement on the embassy’s website.

The same thing the administration was referring to when they issued this statement – 8 hours later:

The Obama administration is disavowing a statement from its own Cairo embassy that seemed to apologize for anti-Muslim activity in the United States.

“The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government,” an administration official told POLITICO.

Keep spinning little boy. With a lot more practice you may someday reach DWS level.

They don’t want to.

This was very obviously a pre-planned mission to shed-blood, create violence and to provoke the USA. Their message is clearly:

“We are the new Osama Bin Laden, we approve of what he did, we’re going to continue doing it, and we still despise you.”

Its rather sad that so many in the USA are wringing their hands about this and haven’t understood that this is a spiteful taunting. The ‘movie’ was just a way for them to create mischief amongst Americans, and the tactic seems to have worked rather well.

Deadly embassy attacks were days in the making

The protest was planned by Salafists well before news circulated of an objectionable video ridiculing Islam’s prophet, Mohammed, said Eric Trager, an expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was announced Aug. 30 by Jamaa Islamiya, a State Department-designated terrorist group, to protest the ongoing imprisonment of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar abdel Rahman. He is serving a life sentence in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

[snip]

A U.S. official, speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the situation publicly, said the Obama administration is investigating whether the assault on the U.S. consulate in Libya was planned to mark the anniversary of 9/11.

Well lookie what we have here little boy. It appears it wasn’t good enough for the boy king either.

“People at the highest levels both at the State Department and at the White House were not happy with the way the statement went down. There was a lot of anger both about the process and the content,” the official said. “Frankly, people here did not understand it. The statement was just tone deaf. It didn’t provide adequate balance. We thought the references were inappropriate, and we strongly advised against the kind of language that talked about ‘continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.’” Source

So you’ve gone from shrieking “The white house is full of apologist appeasers! Look what the embassy sent out! The embassy is an extension of the administration! I can’t believe Obama did this!”

to

“duh, obviously the white house had nothing to do with the statement and didn’t like it when they saw it.”
