One U.S. official killed as gunmen storm, burn U.S. consulate in Benghazi

posted at 8:41 pm on September 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

The attack was still ongoing as of 7:15 p.m. ET but there’s already a body count. Time for another, more forceful statement of regret about “hurt feelings” from the local embassy?

“We can confirm that our office in Benghazi, Libya has been attacked by a group of militants. We are working with the Libyans now to secure the compound,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in State late Tuesday afternoon. “We condemn in strongest terms this attack on our diplomatic mission.”…

Earlier Tuesday, as the attack on the Cairo embassy was ongoing, Nuland told reporters at the daily briefing that the Cairo protests were “modest” compared to what State has seen in the past.

“It sounds like — and I don’t have full details — that this came up pretty quickly, relatively modest group of people, but caught probably us and the Egyptian security outside the embassy by some surprise,” she said. “I would urge you not to draw too many conclusions because we’ve also had some very positive developments in our relationship with Egypt.”

Among the very positive developments lately: Egypt’s new Islamist president paying a goodwill visit to a country with whom we might be at war a month from now. Nuland won’t say whether the attack in Libya is related to the storming of the compound in Cairo, but a spokesman for the Libyan government says it is. Can’t wait to find out which clerics and/or Islamist politicians are quietly pushing the Mohammed movie on their followers to get them excited. According to the filmmaker, he’s surprised by the reaction — although, by his own account, he shouldn’t have been:

Sam Bacile, an American citizen who said he produced, directed and wrote the two-hour film said he had not anticipated such a furious reaction…

“The main problem is I am the first one to put on the screen someone who is (portraying) Muhammad. It makes them mad,” he said in an interview in a telephone number in California. “But we have to open the door. After 9/11 everybody should be in front of the judge, even Jesus, even Muhammad.”

He said many of the film’s cast quit half way through the production, which he started “three or four” years ago, because they were afraid of Muslims.

He said the film also addresses the persecution of Copts in Egypt and blames the U.S. and its allies for fighting Muslims. “The U.S. should fight the ideology, not the people.”

If we “fight the ideology” the way this guy’s decided to fight it, embassies will be burning all over the Middle East. That’s why the Cairo embassy groveled as it did: The irony of these fulsome diplomatic statements of respect for Islam every time the more excitable elements of Islamist movements fly into a rage is that they’re not based on respect at all. They’re a rhetorical ransom, paid to keep the body count down. If not for the threat of violence, the embassy could have, and maybe would have, simply said something like, “The U.S. government had nothing to do with the film in question. American citizens have the right to freedom of speech. Hopefully Egyptians will someday too.” But they can’t say that, because that sort of neutrality could be used as a further pretext to kill. So they sold out American principles in the interest of saving some lives. Pitiful, but maybe not quite as pitiful to the guy whose life was saved. Whatever else this is, though, it’s assuredly not respect.

Byron York’s right that you should expect something from Romney on this tomorrow; in the meantime, Krauthammer’s segment on Fox News tonight will have to do. As for The One, he’s said nothing yet but he’s got a hard-hitting gig on Letterman coming up next week so maybe we’ll get to hear him talk about how he’s the foreign-policy president there. Exit quotation: “If your freedom of speech has no limits, may you accept our freedom of action.”

Another 9/11 celebration and Tehran embassy takeover reenactment in another Arab Spring country.

Except it seems this reenactment may have become a bit too real than intended. Or maybe not. An American infidel was actually killed.

Where are the Marines? These embassies are sovereign U.S. territory under attack.

de rigueur on September 11, 2012 at 9:12 PM

Marines staff the security detail of our embassies, but these are limited strength garrisons; they don’t have sufficient firepower or manpower to repel a mob attack like this. Killing a few of those coming over the wall would have been a very effective deterrent for rational actors, even in a mob situation, but this is muslims we are talking about; a few of their mob converted to martyrs could just as easily further incite the crowd and lead to a full fledged storming of the embassy. The real scandal here is that the government didn’t plan for any kind of contingency in these countries given that it is 9/11 and intel must be pi$$-poor if we didn’t get wind of reaction to the release of this film.

Carney has not yet had the 3 way call with Valerie Jarrett and *spit* Axelrod (Hitler’s nephew).
Once that happens then the “message” can be framed.
The “response” can be leaked out; the flag raised; the waters tested; the dildo lubed, err the proper, reasonable, measured apology given, err the proper words said.
Only after Val and Dave get off their knees in front of the Chicago teachers union will some one be able to say LET.ME.BE.CLEAR.

Juan Williams thinks we’d issue strong statements if we see “Muslims attacking Christians”.

And claims we have done so in the past. What a tool. Does he not realize that as far as that crowd was concerned, they were attacking Christians? And that we’d have to issue daily statements of condemnation if we were to actually respond to such attacks?

TexasDan on September 11, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Yep. What the hell is Williams talking about? Muslims are doing that every freaking day! It’s one of the cornerstones of Islam. There’s a Christian genocide underway. They’re slaughering the Copts, Iraqi Christians have dwindled and are under attack, Nigeria, Somalia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Afghanistan, etc, all over the world where there are Muslims this is happening. And we’re not doing a damn thing! That makes us complicit. And no one called him out on that.

WhatSlushfund on September 11, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Exactly. Williams is a braying jackass, and his presence on the panel of Fox News hard-news prime offering is a symbol of its decline.

Prophet Muhammad Film Stokes U.S. Attacks in Egypt, Libya

Planned Protests

In Egypt, the call to protest was made by Wesam Abdel- Wareth, a Salafist leader and president of Egypt’s Hekma television channel, according to the state-run Ahram Online website.

Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan said yesterday the organization plans to call for a million-person rally on Sept. 14 in opposition to the film, according to Ahram Online. He said the U.S. should issue a formal apology to the Muslim world for the film and prosecute the “madmen” whose activities were harming Washington’s relations with Arab and Muslim countries, the website said.

Yes then he can be a day late and a dollar short.

Does this really sound like a wining strategy to anyone?

Steveangell on September 11, 2012 at 9:40 PM

Actually, yes it does. This is a national security issue, and unfortunately, Jugears is the President of the US. As such, he should be given a window of time to react and reply to this act of war upon sovereign US soil. If a Republican were in power, we would condemn his democrat challenger if that democrat challenger rushed to a microphone within hours of an incident like this and kibitzed on foreign policy.

Romney is wise waiting for a day as that is sufficient time for a decisive president to react and issue any appropriate response. If, after a day, Jugears fails to do anything decisive or meaningful, then it is fully appropriate for the challenger to point out yet another failure of the community organizer in chief to properly represent the US on the world stage.

This is most certainly a winning strategy for the challenger.

gophergirl on September 11, 2012 at 10:21 PM

The reason for the black flags (or ‘banners’) being waved, whether by Al-Qaeda or any other Muslims, is that it has jihadist significance in both Sunni and Shiite Islam. It’s part of the religion. Shiite Islamic eschatology also says that masses waving black banners will be one of the indications that the end-times are arriving. (And for anyone who doesn’t know what that means, that means all Jews are killed, and all Christians are defeated and the ones not killed are sent to hell. Not good, folks. These people are crazy, and dead serious.)

THE CYA Continues………………………….

Obama, Netanyahu discuss Iran
September 11, 2012
*******************

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Iran and the White House denied that the prime minister requested a Washington meeting.

“The two leaders discussed the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program, and our close cooperation on Iran and other security issues,” said a statement issued Tuesday night by the White House. “President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed that they are united in their determination to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and agreed to continue their close consultations going forward.”

The statement comes amid more frequent reports of tensions between the two governments, with Netanyahu demanding from Obama clearer red lines that could trigger military action against Iran, and the Obama administration refusing to outline these.

Israel fears that Iran is approaching the point of obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The White House statement also denied reports that Netanyahu requested a Washington meeting later this month.

“Contrary to reports in the press, there was never a request for Prime Minister Netanyahu to meet with President Obama in Washington, nor was a request for a meeting ever denied,” it said.

And if they decide to go that route, plant ‘em. I have had it with a world that thinks the UN way of dealing with heathens is useful.

Our embassies are under attack and we are responding via Twitter?

WTF is going on here?

And now the WH is having a twitter war with someone in the embassy likely tweeting what they hoped would be a plea for their lives – get off your friggin smart phones, the embassy is burning, people are being shot.

Empty chair.

The White House is disavowing a statement from their own Cairo embassy that apologized for anti-Muslim activity in the United States.

“The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government,” a senior administration official told POLITICO.

Is this freaking true? This administration truly disgusts me.

Not only is it 9/11, but this moron can’t even address the populace about what’s taking place to our service members overseas? Even with a casualty?

Oh wait, I forgot that’s their job, that he doesn’t approve of, so screw them.

Can’t wait to see how the networks cover this…it might be next week, or Nov 7, but I’m sure they’ll get around to it…

Perhaps this has all been planned? Some interesting info about this & Sam Bacile.

A a 14-minute trailer for the English-language film, which was posted on YouTube in July, attracted little attention until last week, when a version dubbed into Arabic was posted on the same YouTube channel and then copied and viewed tens of thousands of times more.

So this trailer was posted last July on youtube and just “last week” it was dubbed into Arabic. Hmmmm

Then there is this:
The Egyptian news media reports appear to have drawn much more attention to the obscure film trailer, which was posted on YouTube by someone using the name Sam Bacile who failed to respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Strange that this says “by someone using the name of Sam Bacile” Maybe they were just trying to verify the author.

“Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Tuesday statement.

And here’s Romney’s complete statement:

“I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi,” Romney said in the statement. “It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

Obama handling of Libya, Egypt violence ‘disgraceful’
Spetember 11 2012 at 10:30PM
****************************

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Tuesday issued a paper statement sharply critical of President Barack Obama over his handling of violence in the Middle East earlier in the day.

The statement was released by the Romney campaign as the candidate arrived at the Jacksonville, Florida hotel where he is expected to spend the night.

U.S. Embassy Condemns Religious Incitement
September 11, 2012

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others
