President Obama not quite ready to cede the ‘Nicki Minaj endorsement’

posted at 2:41 pm on September 10, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Of course, he was asked about the Nicki-Minaj-probably-not-an-actual-endorsement, and really, what else was he supposed to say? And I can tell you, from where I’m sitting, I always appreciate when politicians take some time to provide access to smaller media outlets, and it’s certainly not forbidden to get a little casual and talk about personal and desultory matters for a few moments, especially on the campaign trail. But… come on. Does anybody else have the sneaking feeling that President Obama’s attention to smaller, local, less critical media outlets this summer has been perhaps unnecessarily diligent? Do you think that just maybe he wants to keep getting asked about vapid stuff like this? And meanwhile, back in D.C., is there any actual presiding going on?

Nope, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, someone has to say it. The President’s campaign strategy has been the “It’s all the Republicans fault and look at the millions of jobs I’ve created!” and the Republican response to that has been awful. It’s not enough to chirp about 8.1% unemployement. You have to attack the Dems central arguments, not just ignore them with your own talking points.

The President is winning and will win unless the Republicans stop coasting and playing it safe.

John McCain was the worst Republican challenger since Bob Dole.

I’ll grant you that it’s a tough call between McCain and Romney, but at least McCain had a lead coming out of his convention after Labor Day and was looking decent until Lehman Brothers imploded. Advantage McCain…narrowly.

The “hide under a rock strategy while your opponent defines you as a comic book villian” isn’t working. Why? Because the President’s distortions ARE working. If Romney was at least the campaigner Bush was (and that’s saying something) he would lead by 6-10 points today.

lorien1973 on September 10, 2012 at 3:08 PM

Yeah, cause Paul Ryan was such a safe pick

Ryan was a great pick…but it has done nothing to change the timid approach Romney & Co. has taken in this campaign. For about a week after Ryan was picked, it looked like Romney was going to get aggressive….and then, crickets. Meanwhile, Team Romney has done zilch to address the President’s core attack line…it’s the Republicans fault. There’s no daily reminder why the Dems own this economy…other than the President occupies the WH and “you didn’t build that” that’s not getting traction. No reminders about missing budgets, two years of full Dem control, zero votes for Obama’s budgets, Cap & Trade failure, no further reminders about Solyndra, nothing about F&F…zip. Meanwhile, it’s Bain, outsourcing and Republican’s in Congress as voters are formulating their voting decisions. And if Romney has all this cash…why isn’t he using it? Where’s the ads? $4.5M over 8 swing states? What? That’s $500k per state? That’s not going to get it done and is hardly carpet bombing the airwaves.

If you’re going to etch-a-sketch now’s the time.

No. I said that with Ryan he made a good pick. It was a fairly safe pick because VP selections are made for the base, not the general electorate and independents. There has been little risk taking in this campaign so far…and very little aggression. For example, there was nothing risky in Mitt hitting the President on Solyndra, even though I thought that was a more aggressive move than the milk-toasty way this campaign had been run to date. The only mildly risky move I’ve seen thus far has been on Medicare, but that was a glancing blow as the President then worked to peg Romney as a Congressional Republican type whose to blame for this mess, etc. I thought they had something of a winner with Medicare and then they gave up on it. Frankly, I think they’re poll-testing everything as much as Team O, and it’s clearly not working.

Sidebar: Last Friday, I saw Great Performances on our PBS station. It had Paul McCartney and friends, at Capitol Records, playing songs that were recorded for his latest album. Diana Krall was on piano. I love her style and playing.

I really enjoyed it – even though my first love is late ’60 and ’70s hard rock.

OhEssYouCowboys on September 10, 2012 at 3:37 PM

You know, I started the clip thinking “meh to all this,” but as I listened it did show its relevance. There’s a simple politician’s answer to this question that anybody should know enough to give: “Eh, I don’t know any more about it than you do. I guess you’d have to ask Nicki to elaborate. (fake laughter) But (segue into something that actually matters)”

Except he’s so thin-skinned and defensive that he can’t even give that pointless neutral response. He has to try and qualify and deny and practically whine about it. I didn’t think there would be anybody on either side that could give half a rat’s arse about the Nicki Minaj endorsement… except apparently there is One.

Re: Country and Alison Krauss, all that I’ve heard of her was her collaboration with Robert Plant – and I enjoyed her voice, very much.

I’m not into country, either – but, give a listen to Lucinda Williams. I have 2 of her CDs – Sweet Old World and Little Honey – and I love them both. She’s kinda alt-rock-country.

And! On Little Honey, Elvis Costello duets with her.

And meanwhile, back in D.C., is there any actual presiding going on?

No worries. There’s none going on when Barry is there, either.

Visualize an empty chair.

Got sidetracked for a minute — desultory – but, hey, we’re back.

Wow. Tough room.

Minaj is a popstar. No one expects pop stars to have gigantic nerd brains or create complicated, insightful works of art. She’s fine for what she is and does. I thought it was a mark of the zeitgeist that she would publicly criticize the president. Apparently he thinks so too, otherwise he wouldn’t be working so hard to get her back. She’s definitely not leading opinion here, just reflecting it.

Sorry I dont think/talk/breathe politics every waking moment of my life.

You should get out more. Come out your bomb shelter. Enjoy life. It’s going to be okay.
