Maryland Democrat exits congressional race due to allegations of voter fraud

posted at 5:21 pm on September 10, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Wendy Rosen, a small-business owner running as a Democrat for Maryland’s 1st Congressional district, quit the race today after her party reported to state officials that she is currently registered for, and has recently participated in, the elections of both Maryland and Florida. WaPo reports:

“Personal issues have made this the hardest decision that I have had to make,” Rosen said [in a statement.]

Rosen’s announcement came the same day the state Democratic party released a letter to state Attorney General Douglas Gansler and state prosecutors reporting the allegations against Rosen.

“The Maryland Democratic Party has discovered that Ms. Rosen has been registered to vote in both Florida and Maryland since at least 2006; that she in fact voted in the 2006 general election both in Florida and Maryland; and that she voted in the presidential preference primaries held in both Florida and Maryland in 2008,” wrote Yvette Lewis, the state party chair. “This information is based on an examination of the voter files from both states. We believe that this is a clear violation of Maryland law and urge the appropriate office to conduct a full investigation.”

Apparently, the state party found out about the voter-fraud stain on her record and pressured her to resign. She spoke with the Baltimore Sun on Monday, claiming that she just can’t remember whether she voted twice — in the elections of two different states — or not.

Rosen, a Cockeysville businesswoman who is registered to vote in Maryland, told The Baltimore Sun on Monday that she also registered in Florida, where she owned land, in order to support a “very close friend” running for the St. Petersburg City Council and to vote on local issues there.

Rosen, asked by The Sun whether she voted twice in the 2008 presidential primary, said she did not remember how she voted.

Mm hmm. Nobody seems to have been forecasting that Rosen would have won the race — against Republican freshman Rep. Andy Harris — anyways, as the recently redrawn district has been growing increasingly Republican-leaning. But, I’m just left wondering — and correct me if I’m wrong here — did Democrats just admit that voter fraud exists? Because I thought we were supposed to believe that voter fraud isn’t a real thing, and isn’t something we should waste our time worrying about nor “suppressing” people’s votes with voter ID laws, or something?

You are wrong. What Democrats said is that efforts to stop voter fraud are likely to depress votes for constituents that typically vote Democrat–like Democrats who have registered and voted in multiple states.

Conservative in NOVA on September 10, 2012 at 5:36 PM

I’m currently in an argument with liberals on the subject of voter ID laws. My opponents would argue that voter ID laws would not prevent fraud of this type. Is that true? For example, would she have both Maryland and Florida driver licenses?

Acceptable forms of ID to vote in Florida

Florida driver’s license

Florida ID card issued by the Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

U.S. passport

Military identification

Student identification

Retirement center identification

Neighborhood association ID

Public assistance identification

voter id is just the tip of the iceberg.

the entire system of absentee ballots, multiple days to vote, i would think that it would be possible to vote several times, in different states as needed.

add to that felons and illegals and you are getting closer

but then, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. the deeper problem is who counts the votes and how are they counted..think MN…and WA car trunks

any machine pol (including Stalin) knows that who counts the votes is the most important

CycloneCDB on September 10, 2012 at 5:57 PM

Yes Virginia (and Maryland), there is a thing called vote fraud. This needs to go into the fact box along with all the other documented cases (including Thad McCotter’s embarrassment). It’s real, it’s a violation of real American’s rights and it will not be tolerated.

If it’s good enough for the DNC convention, ID is good enough for the voting booth.

Every single time I’ve moved from one state to another, I have been required to turn in my former state’s drivers license in order to obtain one for my new state. I have never been able to keep the old one. And (although each state differs) you are usually required to obtain your new drivers license within a certain number of days (60 or 90) after moving.

Unless, of course, you cheat.

red_herring on September 10, 2012 at 5:51 PM

So, according to your reasoning, voter ID isn’t needed? I swear all of these, “don’t worry about catching the majority of voter fraud cases, because it wouldn’t work with one bizarre case” arguments are getting tiring.

Count the Minnesota felons? Yes – wouldn’t want to disenfranchise one or two people caught up in the fray. Doesn’t matter that you essentially cancel 400 Republican votes. That a US Senate seat turned on this is not relevant.

Count the Colorado Illegal alien votes? Yes, wouldn’t want to disenfranchise one or two people caught in the fray. That you cancel out a few thousand Republican votes and a US Senate seat turned because of this is not relevant.

The point is that all voter fraud is criminal, and that she will get away with it because she is a Dem.

When wholesale fraud is allowed, it cancels opposition votes in a wholesale way. Are hundred and thousands of cancelled votes important, or are the two legitimate instances of voter inconvenience – yet not disenfranchisement – from the last few years more important.

You have to show friggin’ ID to get into the Dem convention and nearly any Government building for crying out loud.

Honestly – that isn’t even a straw man – it’s a strand of a thread of a straw man argument.

Bob's Kid on September 10, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Just a quick question, would voter ID work in this case? I just spoke to both my city and state elections offices and both told me there is no national data base they are able to check to confirm that a person is registered in another state. It is basically an honor system….when you sign you application to register to vote you are signing an affidavit swearing that you are registered in only one state. If no one turns you in (or the government doesn’t find out by some other manner) you are pretty much scott free. In this case she was on the voting rolls in both states (I’d like to say because of their lack of due diligence, but there doesn’t seem to be any way for them to check at all) and could have provided valid ID in both states to vote. I do understand that she committed voter fraud and I am absolutely for voter ID laws, but I’m not sure they would work in this case. My apologies for rambling.

Republicans have been accured of voter fraud for as long as I can remember, but every time real voter fraud is found, it’s a democrat.
