NFL Week 1 open thread

posted at 11:01 am on September 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Are you ready for some football?  Welcome back to my favorite time of year, when I have an easy post every Sunday morning that focuses on anything but politics, and when people across the political spectrum can agree on one thing: I’m gonna pick the Pittsburgh Steelers every single frickin’ week.  Get used to it, newbies.  And don’t forget the occasional crying/gloating over Notre Dame football, which is off to a 2-0 start for the first time in what seems like decades after yesterday’s come-from-behind win over Purdue.

But we’re here to talk about NFL football and my weekly argument (rationalization) for a Steelers win.  Today they’re on the road in Denver, where Peyton Manning now plays after what should have been a career-ending neck injury two seasons ago.  Pittsburgh lost their last game of the season in Denver in OT despite a gutsy performance by a hobbled Ben Roethlisberger, thanks to the heroics of Tim Tebow, who got rewarded by being sent to the New York Jets to sit on the bench.  The Steelers come into Denver dinged up again, with James Harrison and Rashard Mendenhall both sitting out the game, and of course Ryan Clark unable to play in Denver ever.  Still, the Steelers O-line improved in the off-season, and the defense looked sharp in pre-season as well.  Manning has a new team and a new system, and I’m not sure that Denver improved much of anything in the off-season.  I’m picking the Steelers to win by four, 21-17.

Last season, my record was 70-24, so it’s not like I don’t get some picks correct.  I also got the Super Bowl pick right after going about .500 in playoff picks.  Let’s highlight five more games for this week and see how I start off the season:

  • 49ers at Packers — Both teams were strong last year, but I’m not going against the Pack at home, not even in relatively warm weather.  Green Bay 31-21 over San Francisco.
  • Jaguars at Vikings — Both teams were relentlessly mediocre last year, but the Vikings’ big problem was a QB deficiency and an inability to hold a lead.  I’m assuming they’ve worked on both in the off-season.  I’ll pick the Vikings to be up by three TDs at the half and win 27-24 in the end.
  • Colts at Bears — Andrew Luck, welcome to the NFL. Don’t expect to beat the Monsters of Midway, who may not be able to win this division but are still a better team on paper than last year’s Luck-less Colts.  The line has the Bears up by 10, and that sounds about right.  Chicago wins 31-21.
  • Patriots at Titans — Tom Brady will be looking for some redemption after losing a second time to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl, and the Titans aren’t a good enough team to stand in his way.  New England 35-17 over the Titans.
  • Bengals at Ravens — As a Steelers fan, I’m hoping they both lose.  I’d prefer that Baltimore gets off to the slower start … but I don’t think I’ll get my wish.  Ravens win 24-14 over Cincinnati.

Steelers—-maybe, but the Niners will beat the Packers. Rodgers will throw four INT’s. 49ers 27, Pack 17.

no way … the packers will win at home ….

Congrats to the Sacramento State Hornets, who beat Colorado yesterday…what COLLEGE FOOTBALL is all about!

Rovin on September 9, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Amen and Huzzah Rovin! My Alma Mater!! A huge win for the CSUS program because they have never ever ever and i mean never ever been any kind of a football power. Theyve put a handful of dudes into the NFL and sometimes it looks like half the Canadian league are ex-Hornet standouts. But thats it. Most years, Sac State football cant beat its way out of a wet paper bag with a claw hammer and brass knuckles.

But this was almost as big a win as the season opener at Oregon State last year, known hereabouts as the Big Beaver Beatdown, which is also the nickname for the trendy hipster nightlcub circuit in town. Or is it?

Sacramento on September 9, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Yeah, but can he find the field, on a Sunday morning, hung-over or maybe still blind drunk, and win?

Yoop on September 9, 2012 at 12:39 PM

Bobby Lane or Matt Stafford?

Perhaps you’ve seen something I haven’t, but Stafford seems to me to be a great leader in the making. In the interviews I’ve heard, he always says the right things. I’d say he’s certainly one of the young NFL players with his head on straight.

Actually I was one of the first posters on this thread. Had to leave to get some work done.

So, when are the NFL owners going to fire Roger Goodell, and replace him with Condi Rice? The man has become a laughingstock, especially after Friday’s ruling re. the Saints player suspensions.

FYI the Saints’ Will Smith is in uniform today.

Del Dolemonte on September 9, 2012 at 12:53 PM

From ESPiN:

The Steelers have watched a draft pick go down with a knee injury in three of their four preseason games. The latest is the most severe.

Rookie third-round pick Sean Spence has multiple torn ligaments in his left knee and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, a source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

This has been a bad run of injuries for the Steelers’ 2012 draft class. Pittsburgh’s first three selections have all injured their knees and the regular season hasn’t started yet.

First-round pick David DeCastro injured his knee in the third preseason game five days ago and he could be placed on injured reserve next Tuesday. Under the new IR rule, the Steelers can bring back the right guard after eight weeks.

The first draft pick to suffer a knee injury was offensive tackle Mike Adams, a second-round pick. Adams sprained his MCL in the preseason opener but he returned five days later.

Now, the loss of Spence puts a dent in the Steelers’ special teams and depth at inside linebacker. Former Bengals linebacker Brandon Johnson is expected to replace him.

The therapist will be running for his life all season long. Maybe he will even be pretzelized again.

IDK Del, do you actually think the owners will? I have my doubts. The league is doing very well revenue wise and the fans seem happy with the game. The only thing most fans are upset with overall is the situation with the Ref’s, which should be settled after this weekend’s games when I predict more than 1 game, will be decided by the clowns in stripes. I don’t know if the owners are willing to upset the apple cart due to the Saints fiasco. Time will tell though.

Anyway go Patriots!

A plethora of choices here in New England this afternoon-usually the Boston Fox station doesn’t go head-to-head with C-BS when the Patriots play, but they are today, and they are showing the Saints game right now. We get the 49ers-GB game at 4:30.

Del Dolemonte on September 9, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Eagles-Browns. Eagles’ first play from scrimmage, one of Reid’s genius screen passes, loss of 5. After big gain called back by poorly designed pass based on an illegal pick, series only survives on a Michael “Would you have preferred if I ate my dogs” Vick scramble. Ends in a lost fumble. Well, at least they’re playing the Browns. It’s gonna be a loooong season, Eagle fans.

Eagles’ second drive ends with Michael “Woof” Vick interception. Two holding calls in first quarter. Their only hope is the Browns and their rookie QB. Offseason Eagles cut headline writer’s dream Mike Kafka because of one bad game and now their backup QB is someone named Trent Edwards, who wasn’t even in the league last year. I guess Trent Dilfer wasn’t available. If Reid is still employed at start of second half I may start watching Glee reruns on Sundays. Saw an ad for that show at the break. My gosh it looks awful.

msupertas on September 9, 2012 at 3:02 PM

Oy. Eagles lead at the half and after playing tough for 29:31 looked like the Browns laid down for that TD. We’ll take it. But this color guy seems to go out of his way to say positive things about the Iggs. A guy makes a tackle after a gain of 35 and it’s a “championship play”. Browns doomed rookie QB — the next member of the long list of failed Browns QBs — makes a chicken-arm throw and misses an open guy by 30 feet and the Eagles did it. It’s almost like listening to a game on the radio radio and play-by-play homer Merrill “the homer’s homer” Reese gush over a four-yard gain. Why must the Eagles be made to appear to succeed even when they don’t? Is this held over from the Donovan McNabb era? I’m disturbed by it even more because I’m a bleed-Eagles-green fan. It’s like the liberal media bubble. It’s probably why Andy Reid, loser of 4 NFC championships and the Puke Bowl, still has a job. And this is part of the problem with the NFL, the game commentary. They just talk and talk and talk when there’s very little to say.

You have got to be freaking kidding me.

#()%&#(_%&(_%&#@( Vikings defense.

gophergirl on September 9, 2012 at 3:53 PM

Upside, it’s still pre-season until wk 3-4. Downside, they still count in the regular season W-L column. Deep breaths.

Well our rookie kicker just kicked a 55 yarder to send it into overtime so we could still pull this out.

But still our defense sucks.

You guys have Peterson. Watched him run roughshod over many defenses down here in OK. Just give him the ball and watch him go.

Saints w/ a 4th and 10 TD PLUS a 2 point conversion.

Now within 8 with 6 min’s on the clock.

This could get good in a hurry.

Tim_CA on September 9, 2012 at 4:13 PM

Oh my they actually won.

Gophers 2-0 / Vikings 1-0

I feel light headed.

Lived on gulf coast back when the fans put paper bags over their faces. Wish they would have had this team back then.
